Marcy O’Brien writes with an eye for detail and a gift for putting you right there in the scene with her. Her deeply personal voice speaks with both wisdom and irreverent wit – the blessings of a well-lived life – evoking frequent smiles and even an occasional tear.In Rounding Third, her collection of columns and stories takes flight in the golden era of aviation, when flying was fun and the passenger was king. She brings you along on her lifetime of adventures, takes you into the heart of her family, and introduces you to some genuine characters along the way. Her love for people and insatiable curiosity lead to many unexpected from kosher dill pickles to peonies in a French bar; from ZsaZsa Gabor’s breakfast mink to geriatric romance. She is more than just funny. She’s fun. Spending time with Marcy always leaves you with the lasting warmth of a visit from an old friend.

This book was published by a vanity press, and the person who recommended it to me is a friend of the author's, so I didn't expect much. But, what a pleasant surprise: these essays are delightful!

Ms. O'Brien has a real talent for recognizing important moments and recording them with just enough detail, Some of her stories are funny; some are poignant; many are both. She is self-disciplined enough as a writer that her essays (most of which originally appeared in her regular column in a local newspaper) are short, well-constructed and pack a punch. She often manages to find a lesson to impart; other times, she's just sharing a beautiful moment with her reader.

I especially enjoyed her stories about her hard-working, fun-loving mother. Another favorite was her story about her grandson feeding his corn muffin to the birds.

I was sorry to finish the collection and have to part from O'Brien. I feel like she would be a fun person to know.

I always enjoy this author’s weekly columns in our local newspaper, so was happy to purchase this collection of humorous stories. Read at once or over a period of time these heart-warming stories from the decades of the author’s life (I left the book with my dad in the midst of my reading it, and he thoroughly enjoyed it, too, especially the stories from Ms. O’Brien’s stewardess days).
