One chance meeting. A night that changes everything.
The Kennedy sisters, Molly, Alex and Sam, have a Christmas tradition – a night out, just the three of them, sisters together.
Lewis Stone can’t face the work Christmas party, but as he’s one of the bosses, he has to put in an appearance. He leaves as soon as he can politely get away, ready for the holidays to begin.
When Lewis Stone meets the Kennedy sisters, a train of events begins that engulfs them all.
One sister is left fighting for her life.
One sister is left fighting for her marriage.
And one sister is hellbent on revenge…
The brilliant new psychological thriller from bestseller Owen Mullen.
The plot of this one keeps up with its flashy catch phrase: THREE SISTERS – ONE LYING, ONE DYING, ONE HELLBENT ON REVENGE! Dun dun dunn. I loved this, just a tiny bit predictable, still the killer twist lives up to its name, very satisfying.
The Kennedy sisters had a night out before Christmas. On the way back an accident happens and Molly falls under the Lewis Stone's car and is in a comma. Four weeks later her twin sister Sam and older sister Alex have to decide to disconnect Molly from medical devices and let her die.
The accident triggers a series of major life changes in the lives of its participants. Sam is divorcing her husband, Colin, and Lewis is stepping aside from his company at a critical moment that requires an urgent decision, Alex wants revenge on Lewis who wasn't charged with the accident.
Every character in this book has a lot of dark moments, but the book is a bit slow. For pages and pages nothing different happens, only rage and depression. The end was filled with some events, but it was predictable enough and the readers can feel that something was not told but could be guessed.
The book contains too much negativity and wreck for my liking. Some events look unreal. For example, Lewis's best friend and co-owner of their company Damian doesn't know where Lewis is hiding and has to threaten his lawyer to get the address of an isolated place in Scotland that Lewis hasn't visited in 10 years. Still, Alex doesn't have any problems finding this information from company gossip without Damian discussing this with anybody. Just a few minutes after the accident when her sister lies in the street dying, Alex manages to remember Lewis's name and city address from his discussion with the police. Lewis is released from the accident place without any police investigation at all except for checking his breath alcohol level.
I don't believe I am going to read more books by this author.
The tagline grabbed me but the book failed to deliver. I thought the narrative read more like a gangland thriller, which is not a genre that I particularly enjoy. Although the ending was very clever and unexpected, I disliked most of the characters and found the plot to be quite mundane.
It took me a bit of time to get my head around the different characters. Luckily, when one is left fighting for her life, it kind of ruled her out of the character list! For the rest, I struggled to focus on their identities, even when it came to discerning between the male characters. I don’t think it helped that I didn’t like any of them, finding the cast of people to be incredibly selfish and self-centred. They all seem to be looking out for themselves rather than focussing on their support network around them.
There is a lot going on in this story and I would argue there is too much. Alongside the revenge theme, there’s a marriage needing saving, workplace affairs, deception and a business take-over. Even the minor characters are pulled into the bigger stories and I think this led to a rather cluttered narrative. I thought my head was all over the place and this wasn’t helped by the multiple perspectives that the story is told from. From reading the blurb, I was expecting this to be about the revenge act, but instead, there are a lot of other things that feed into this narrative and I consequently felt bored by how long the main plot development was happening.
Furthermore, it felt like some elements of the story almost had to be included, like the writer had a checklist of scenes that were intended to be a part of the novel. For example, the sub-plot with Sam made me feel incredibly uncomfortable and I don’t think certain elements actually added anything to the main story. In addition, some of the scenes with Damian and the business take-over were prolonged and whilst it showed a different side to the struggling Lewis, I switched off a fair amount because it was detracting from the three sisters… kind of what I was expecting this book to just be about.
Overall, this book did not deliver in the way that I was hoping to. The ending was a killer surprise that made me sit up straight. For the most of it, I found I was slumped over my kindle, looking forward to reaching the conclusion. The writer style, the lack of likeable characters and the slow story did not create the greatest of combinations so I was rather pleased to see the back of the sisters by the end.
With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The book is a whole lot of nothing. The characters are not likeable. The scenarios are far-fetched. The ending was predictable. The book includes themes of rape, death, divorce, and sexual harassment allegations however the execution is poor on all fronts.
The author’s depiction of women is sad, bordering misogynistic.

The pace is quite slow bit it's well worth sticking with the book. The story is told from multiple points of view. It was a bit confusing on whose perspective the story was being told from. Maybe a header of who it was might have helped. The author did a good job describing the thoughts and emotions the characters went through after tragedy struck. The last couple of chapters were the best and the ending was a shocker.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #BoldwoodBooks and the author #OJMullen for my ARC of #ThreeSisters in exchange for an honest review.
I really wanted to like this one more than I did. The premise sounded so promising and I love Scotland, so I was excited for the story to be set there. I just did not gel with the writing style, so I struggled with it a bit.
For me, it just felt like there was a lot going on. Normally, I don't mind multiple POV's, but this story had 5 (I think, possibly 6) and it wasn't always clear which POV we were in. I prefer when each full chapter is dedicated to one character, which wasn't the case in this book. And with such short chapters anyway, I don't get why it wasn't one POV per chapter. I also didn't love that Alex's POV was in first person, while the rest were in third.
In that train of thought, I felt like we could have done with one less perspective and storyline. There was so much going on and it was a little confusing at times to keep it all straight. The whole Damian and Tina storyline was unnecessary in my opinion and felt unfinished. The whole Oliver/Lewis/Damian storyline also could have been left out for me. I also just didn't connect with any of the characters, so I wasn't invested in any of the storylines.
I will admit that I guessed the big twist at the end pretty early on, which I think took away some of my enjoyment. This is a pretty slow burn, with a big payoff at the end. Because I guessed the ending, I didn't get that jaw dropping payoff. But based on other reviews, a lot of people didn't see the twist coming and really loved it because of the ending.
Overall, I think this was a well written book, just not in a writing style that I personally enjoyed. I think it would be well suited for people who are newer to the thriller genre.
Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.
The ending is what saved this book. It’s predictable but makes the book good.
The beginning is slow to pick up, there’s lots of side stories going on, and a lot of geography. It was a decent read. The ending is predictable but saves the book. I’m glad I kept reading for the ending
Synopsis (from Netgalley, the provider of the book for me to review.) ********************************************************* One chance meeting. A night that changes everything.
The Kennedy sisters, Molly, Alex, and Sam, have a Christmas tradition – a night out, just the three of them, sisters together.
I like books in this genre as my bookclub is currently on a literature-snob bent and sometimes you just want to read a book and try to enjoy it, right?? (more on that later….) I have a sister…no, my parents have another daughter…so I don’t know how it feels to give a crap about a sibling, so this book was kind of delicious as they go through a night from hell. You might find yourself rooting for one sister over another, but that is okay … I certainly did without guilt!
Decidedly a beach book, this is a so-so book to read (you might like it more than I did) … take it to the beach. Take it to the park. Take it to your bedroom and sit in front of a very noisy a/c. It was MOTR for me but you might like it more than I did. There was nothing “wrong” with it… it just wasn’t my cuppa.
I wanted to like this but I just couldn’t really get on board with it. There were too many storylines or main characters that didn’t properly tie in together, and I guessed the twist quite early on.
Dreadful. There was no suspense, the characters had no depth, the switch in narrative was annoying. It felt like the author had a word count to reach with the incredibly unnecessary inclusion of locations all through the book. Did I really need to know what junction the character left the M8 at? Or which road they turned off or onto? Every. Single. Time. I kept reading purely for the ‘twist’ other readers mentioned. It really wasn’t a twist. The plot revolved around twin sisters, one who discovered an affair through reading her husband’s messages but no details were ever given of the affair partner until the last chapter…. Oh I wonder who it could have been?!

I really enjoyed this one! My first by this author. It was a good compelling read. I did think it was more of a drama than thriller for a time. I also thought it was going to be predictable but boy, was I wrong! The narration was excellent. And that ending! Bam! It sure got me! I will look for more by this author.
Kind of had a feeling what was going to happen. Didn't really grip me but had to finish it to know if my theory was correct which it was. Few spelling mistakes along the way. It also seemed like I had read parts of the story in other books before?
I don't know what it was about this book but it got me weirdly hooked even though the whole thing was just average. The very last page explaining the twist was really good but overall was such a dragged out story.
I would have never picked this book for myself but it’s fun to go into a book completely blind! For literally 95% of the book it felt like nothing relevant was happening, until the last few chapters which did catch my attention. The plot twist was good and I did not see it coming, which is basically the only redeeming quality. The characters were bland and I didn’t enjoy the business conflict. Probably a 1.75⭐️
The way I was close to DNFin this shit. It was so repetitive in the first & second part of the book, it felt like filler.
There's also some unnecessary events in the book. One of the sisters is raped on a night out after discovering her marriage is over; and the book just carries on???

This is the first book I have read by this very talented author but it most certainly won't be my last!!!
This novel consists of a prologue, 71 chapters and an epilogue and is set over 3 parts. The chapters are short in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
WHAT did I just read!!!! WOW!!! I mean seriously Wow!! I was NOT expecting that lot fair play!!! This has GOT to start with a MASSIVE WELL DONE OWEN MULLEN!!!! Ooopps sorry, yes, needed a minute to get over that but I've just left you hanging there... Sorry.... Let me tell you more...
Firstly let's start off with the writing style, etc!! This book is an extremely well written book by this amazing author which had me hook line and sinker!!! It is so smoothly and fantastically written with vivid descriptions I completely forgot I was even reading a book a few times. The synopsis, title and cover really fit the storyline.
As you can tell I LOVED the storyline!!! I found it to be realistic, very fast paced and I read it in a day. I loved the setting and beautiful atmospheres and just well... Everything!!! This is one of those epic storylines that really does show how one moment in time can change so many lives!!! I absolutely loved this twisty and gripping thriller!!! Owen uses multiple perspectives in his storyline and managed to weave them altogether perfectly. We get to see what is happening from the view points of the sisters Sam and Alex as well as business partners Lewis and Damian, Sam's husband Colin, Damian's lover Tina and Lewis and Damian's lawyer Oliver. As you delve deeper and deeper into the storyline secrets are revealed, mistakes are made and the pace gets faster and faster!!! During the book there are so many butterfly affects which goes to show how one small action can have such a large ripple affect which could continue for years. This book was extremely fast paced with something constantly happening to keep you addicted. Every time I kept telling myself one more chapter the one I was in ended at a point where there was no way I could stop reading so I absolutely devoured it in one sitting!! It was absolutely ram packed with mystery, secrets, jealousy, death , revenge, heartbreak, tension, suspense and absolutely everything you could ask for in a gripping and moody thriller. I was constantly guessing and questioning myself about who was behind what and when everything was revealed I was absolutely shocked and had been completely wrong about everything!! This is not an easy feat considering how many books I read a year so a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS Owen!! There was one thing in regards to what Colin had done that I must didn't surprise me but when the rest was revealed I was absolutely shocked and my heart went out to two of the characters, one for what they did and one who didn't deserve any of what happened to them. Arggghhh... Its so hard to NOT say anything about them as it will give too much away and spoil it for future readers but it definitely left me speechless over and over!!! I have read hundreds of psychological books and it gets harder and harder to keep my interest and to shock me but Owen managed it hook, line and sinker Just brilliant fair play and everything linked in and wraps up perfectly!!! I cannot remember the last time I flew through a book so quickly. Each and every time I went to put it down to do something my fingers were itching to pick it back up as I just HAD to know what happened next!! Owen's evocative writing skills ensures you are dragged deep into the storyline seeing everything that is happening and feeling the tension and suspense throughout. I was on the edge of my seat and biting my nails wondering what was going to happen next. I can't say more than that as I don't want to spoil it for future readers so if you want to know you'll have to grab yourself a copy!! You won't regret it!! Just like with the storyline the characters come to life with Owen's fantastic writing skills. They are well rounded, complex, realistic and strong making them all the more believable. I won't go into more details as I don't want to risk giving anything away but Owen really has done an amazing job constructing an addictive and explosive psychological thriller with fantastic and varied characters that you just won't be able to put down!! I would absolutely LOVE to see this turned into a movie and would wait up all night to get tickets to watch it!! An absolute must read!!
Congratulations Owen on an explosive success!!! I would like to welcome you to my favourite author club!! Here's to your next success 🥂!!!
Clear your schedules before picking this up as you will not be able to put it down!!! "
Overall an absolutely page turning, addictive, gripping and explosive must read that will keep you addicted from the very start to the mind blowing ending!!!

I do adore this author's books and this one is an absolutely cracking read. A night out leaves one sister dead and the aftermath of this becomes the story. The story is told from the perspective of the characters so I was able to get a viewpoint from the remaining two sisters, the driver of the car and what he was dealing with and also some other characters. This book was engaging from start to finish and it did not end anywhere near where I thought it would!
The sisters, Molly, Alex and Sam. The driver of the car that hit and killed one of the sisters is Lewis Stone. This story is one that was woven in and out of the lives of these characters and also a husband, business partner and solicitor. As with this author's previous books, nothing is straightforward forward and to try to explain the story... well I would make it confusing, which it definitely was not as I read it.
The story has highs and lows, of grieving and also of revenge. Lives have changed as you would expect and the strain of events shows on certain people. For some, it is a case of not being able to move forward for another feeling guilty, for some a way to change and try to come to terms with things and all in all how one incident altered people's futures.
Accidents are not nice and while the author does mention the accident it is the aftermath that he focuses on. Getting to know the characters and understanding their lives and what drives them to do the things they do becomes a story. Understanding the dynamics between people is another part of the story. Then there is the psychological side of the story and that is where the author for me really worked his magic. Not necessarily obvious but there are mentions of how people react to heartbreaking changes.
The story took a route I really did not expect, there were hints along the way but the finale! Well! That was something else. The shocks, twists and surprises fell one after another and they fitted so well within the story. It is not until you got to these revelations that you suddenly changed your view about a person or remembered something mentioned earlier in the book. It makes for fabulous reading!
In case you had not worked it out, I adored this book a huge amount. If you are a fan of thrillers that are mysterious have a domestic noir to them, are compelling and full of suspense then this is one you should pick up. Yeah, I would definitely recommend it.
Well call me biased, I wont mind, because I am. Owen just gets better with every book. He writes great series and great standalones. His books are gritty and will grip the reader and keep them turning the pages furiously. He has a great back catalogue to enjoy. But enough of that we are here to talk about THREE SISTERS.
This is book about, as the title suggests, three sisters and the man who comes crashing into their lives.
This a book primarily about grief and how it affects people. One thing most people who are grieving will tell you is, that is grief is personal to them. But what they will not tell you is it will make you self centred and indeed can make you very uncaring about others.
It sets the sisters against each other. One accusing the other of not grieving in the proper way.
This is a book about grief, victims, lies and secrets that move around on the shifting sands of fate. A story on a large scale that the author handles with aplomb and you will enjoy this book immensely from the scope of the tale and the quality of the writing.
Highly recommended and if it crosses your radar do yourself a favour and pick up a copy.
Crazy! A thriller and a mystery right up to the end! And what an ending! You could guess at it sure, but as all of the loose ends were being tied back up so nicely, it seemed less and less possible. What an interesting read. Alex was an incredible character, and really as the M.C., she should have been. The other characters were also equally compelling. Incredible, absolutely fantastic!
Plenty of bits in it can be triggering though, so be aware for those before jumping into it, if you have certain topics that aren't for you.
4.5 stars because, while I enjoyed reading each character's P.O.V., it seemed off to me that only the "main" character was written in first person, and the rest in 3rd. Still really well done, just different.
I hated all the characters equally and didn't root for any of them. It was a lot of the characters' talking to themselves and nothing happening. The 'twist' that was explained in the last page of the book (page 335!) was soooo obvious that I figured it out within 10 minutes of reading. Towards the end of the book (where something finally happened after 250 pages of characters talking and planning and doing nothing) I skipped pages and didn't find myself losing much. It's a book where everyone is unhinged but not in a good way. I would say it's an easy read, but it isn't because the pacing is one of the worst I've ever seen. The book didn't need to be 335 pages long and it was difficult to finish because every new page came and gave nothing.
Haven’t read a book by this Author before But I couldn’t put it down Finished in 1 day was that good. I was shocked by the Ending I didn’t expect it Would of given more than 5 stars if could of Was a really good thriller would make a good film
The story was a good one but I found it very repetitive. I’m not sure that the ending was good. It seems the author was trying to just end quickly. Morally this is not a good story.
It started off really good, set in Glasgow and the glens. I had high hopes for it but my god it just dragged for the most part then the last chapter I’ll admit was a good twist.
This book was not only a slow start, but didn’t pick up until 70% of the way through and even that is being generous. Reviews were mixed on this book, I found it to be quite predictable throughout but an easy enough read
I don’t know what happened with this book, I couldn’t finish it. It was a drawn out plot where the characters were written to punish the reader. I felt like I was trapped, hated every character.
