Trusting him is the only way to save the kingdom.
Betraying her is the only way to keep them both alive.

Stripped of her memories and her magic, Raven has been left for dead.

As a prisoner in the enemy’s mineral mines, her only clue to who she is and where she came from is the mysterious map tattooed on her hand—a map containing hidden secrets that some people would kill for.

Jeddak is one of those people.

A warrior from the Kovak tribe, he’s hunting for the powerful Zavien stone to pay the corrupt king’s ransom. If he doesn’t return home with it by the new moon, his betrothed will be executed.

When Jeddak discovers that a prisoner named Raven has the only map that leads to the artifact, he allies with her as they navigate treacherous lands and battle against ancient magical forces to unravel the map’s secrets. But can Raven trust this stranger who’s helping her? If the map gets into the wrong hands, thousands of people will die.

As their feelings for each other grow, their tenuous alliance begins to fray. Until Jeddak is forced to make a decision—betray Raven or forsake his kingdom.

Laurel Black is an author and photographer. She loves creating visually-striking fantasy worlds with breathtaking magic and thrilling adventure. Growing up, she was more inclined to play outdoors than stay inside and read until she was given The Hobbit. This was when she discovered the true power of books to transport you to another world and where her love of fantasy novels began.

When not writing or behind a camera, you can find Laurel on a walk in the woods, searching town for the best vegan desserts, or reading novels that have happy endings.

She lives in Nashville with her husband and their rescue dogs, Parker and Sable, who also both like a good adventure and would probably like hobbits too if they met them. Lost Kingdom is Laurel’s debut novel.

Thank you to the author for a gifted copy.

WOW.

This was an incredible debut. I am so happy that I got a chance to read it early! It had a lot of those classic YA fantasy moments, but still felt new and intriguing and I will absolutely need the second book as soon as possible.

I loved the slow burn romance. It is slowwww and that’s my favorite kind of burn. I like that it’s not a linear path either. Some ups and downs, reveals and jaw drops that I can’t wait to see continue. I spotted possible other angles and now I’m theorizing all the things for this book.

Dual POV is my jam and I’m grateful we had it here. Seeing the hidden identities and lost memory tropes play out so well as they progression of the story moved back and forth between Jeddak and Raven. I loved Jeddak’s animal sidekick (Kah!!) and was the perfect addition to this traveling adventure. I thought that the world building was laid out well and I liked that I got see almost the whole world in this one book.

A wonderful debut and one I’ll happily be hyping to others. Definitely one to take a chance on!

Overall audience notes:
- YA Fantasy
- Language: very little and light
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: moderate
- Trigger/Content Warnings: sexual assault (brief, non-consensual kissing), non-consensual drugging, murder, loss of loved ones, blood depiction

***4.5/5 Stars***

Lost Kingdom was a young adult fantasy that swept me away.  With secrets, lies, adventures, friendship, and betrayal, this book was a magical journey that was impossible to put down!  I loved learning about this new world.  The tribes, magic system, and politics were fascinating!  The characters felt so real.  And the story-line was so easy to devour.  With an extremely slow burn romance, this book will have you begging for more.
Suddenly, I didn’t feel so alone.

Raven was a prisoner in the mineral mines.  With no memory of her past, or even what tribe she belonged to, she was struggling just to survive another day.  The conditions she lived in were atrocious.  Then there was Jeddak, who was from the Kovak Tribe, and was in search of a stone to give to his king.  If he didn’t do that, his betrothed would be murdered.  And Raven had the only map that would lead them to the stone.  The story alternated between Raven and Jeddak, and I truly had no idea how it would all unfold.
No one would be punished except me if they found him dead now. At this point, I would gladly accept the consequences just to see him choke on his last breath.

Raven was so effortless to like.  She persevered in the face of atrocity.  Where she was used as nothing more than just another body to accomplish someone else’s goal, she was still brave and fearless.  She fought to stay alive.  But at the same time, she was so unsure of who to trust.  Her past was a blank slate.  So many that surrounded her kept her hidden from their true intent.  Yet through it all, she had this fire that burned deep inside her that pushed her along!
My breath caught. With his dark, wavy hair and long lashes, he was already strikingly handsome. But now the subtle dimples on his cheeks and the playful sparks in his gold-flecked eyes made me temporarily forget it was cold outside. He could rule a kingdom with that smile.

Jeddak, oh my goddess my feelings towards him kept twisting and turning.  I loved how he tried his best to protect Raven.  He was brave, smart, and I loved his relationship with his bear, Kah.  Btw Kah was not only the voice of reason, but I adored his sarcasm.  He cracked me up again and again!  So I kept wondering, who was going to protect Raven from Jeddak?  He was keeping secrets from her.  That entailed not only why he was helping her. But that he was betrothed.  Yet…..just wait....because once we get the full picture at the end of this story, my kaleidoscope of emotions towards Jeddak turned solid and became true and heartfelt.  I can’t say more without spoilers, other than it was a path to get there!
I felt the weight of one of his throwing knives in my hand. Like the sword from last night, it felt oddly familiar. Using a nearby tree as a target, I took aim at a small knot in the wood and let the knife fly.
The knifepoint hit the center of the knot.
My eyes went wide. Who am I?

Jeddak and Lila together will run you through the gamut of emotions.  They connected on such a deep level, but at the same point they kept each other at arm's distance.  They kept secrets from one another.  But they also needed each other to survive and accomplish their goals.  It was a perilous journey every step of the way!  And there were unthinkable obstacles.  It’ll keep you on your toes wondering what’s going to happen next!  So watching even the tiniest bit of their friendship form had me smiling so huge!  Just try not to smile during the runes scene.
I studied his face, lit by the golden flames. Just a few days ago, he was a stranger. A liability I wanted to leave behind in the stables of Malengard. Now, he felt familiar. Safe. Even though I was in a foreign land, I felt like I’d found a small piece of home in him.

This story had so many twists and turns.  And while it felt fast paced, there were also so many deeper moments laced throughout the pages.  With foreshadowing, a possible deadly fate, and battles in the future, this book had so much story within these pages.  I am nervous for what’s to come and looking forward to that next book!  Especially because of Skyler.  I don’t know what that says about me, especially the feelings I have towards that character, and nope I’m not explaining anything more other than I am beyond obsessed!

Wow! What a wild ride! With immersive world-building that includes different tribes, all with their own histories, cultures, and connections to the world around them, dynamic and interesting characters who go on dangerous journeys, and an intriguing and layered plot that sucked me in from the very first page, Lost Kingdom is a gripping YA fantasy!

The story switches between Raven and Jeddak’s perspectives, so you really get to understand the motivations of both characters. Raven has no memory of her life before her enslavement in the mines, and she’s determined to escape and get her memory back. Jeddak, with the help of his amazing bear familiar, must find a powerful stone to rescue his betrothed from the king. I was so invested in both of their stories and couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. Would Raven regain her abilities before the big bad caught up to her? Her memories? Would she reunite with her brother? Would Jeddak find the stone in time to pay the king’s ransom? Would the tribes end up at war again? Whew! Raven and Jeddak go through so much on this perilous journey, and I loved every nail-biting moment of it.

The secondary characters are fabulous too, and I’m pretty convinced that I need a funny and fierce bear companion that I’m inextricably connected to and can communicate with because the relationship between Jeddak and Kah is the best! I also really liked some of Raven’s allies and am curious to learn more about them. It’ll be interesting to see how each of their stories develops as the series progresses, and I have some hopes for several of them. And I hated the big bads as much as I loved Jeddak, Raven, and their allies. It’s the kind of story where you’re never completely sure who is good and who is bad because everyone seems to have ulterior motives.

And, of course, I have to talk about the love story because it twisted up my romance-loving heart. lol There is a bit of a love triangle, and though I don’t generally enjoy this trope, it totally worked in this story! The angst is real in this story, and the chemistry is off the charts! The characters are so confused and conflicted, and as they journey together, their feelings only become more complicated. I was so eager to see where these characters would end up romantically, and I was not disappointed.

This is a fantastic debut novel and one that I highly recommend to YA or NA fantasy and romantasy lovers. With a well-crafted plot, compelling characters, tons of suspense and intrigue, amazing banter, and more, there’s a lot to love, and that ending! Ahhh! I can’t WAIT to read the next book!

Special thanks to Laurel Black for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

Oh, ya know… just sitting here crying into my peppermint tea at 2am.
I NEED MORE!
More adventures through this amazing world given life by the author’s beautifully explained imagery. More betrayals and unexpected twists. More of this romance that has continually carved wounds into my chest and then packed them with basamweed only to slice them back open again and again just when I think I am about to heal.
What. A. Book.

UPDATE! FULL REVIEW BELOW! 💛
------------------------------------------------
First of all, I want to give a HUGE thank you to Laurel Black for providing me with a copy of her debut novel to read and review! Not only did she give me the chance to read her book but she also spoke with me herself via email and is the absolute coolest author I’ve ever had the pleasure of speaking with.

On to the review!

This book was everything I love about a good YA fantasy novel. The amount of action and adventure and the plethora of intriguing characters… Black did not skimp. I knew from the beginning that this wasn’t going to be one of those books that always gave a happy ending for the characters we came to enjoy. The mines of Malengard with a race of relentless brutes who lack any empathy or compassion is no place for happy endings and triumphs.

The entire first part of the book keeps you on the edge of your seat as Raven lives in murderous conditions and navigates who she can and can’t trust. A wild series of events starts to unfold before your eyes leaving you to wonder, not only who Raven truly is and where she comes from, but who all these other characters are and whether they will play a positive or negative role in the grand scheme of things.

The world Black has constructed is absolutely amazing. When I saw the map at the beginning of the book, my heart soared. Not only did she give us a grand and fascinating world full of different cultures and landscapes but she also gave us all these different tribes with different peoples. I loved meeting and learning about different people from different tribes.

I felt like I was going through the same uncertainties Raven was. I was weary of newcomers but hopeful because they were truly likable characters. I found myself getting emotional at parts where tribes seemingly at odds with each other would work together for the greater good against a common enemy. Some of the dialogue written between these people had me crying happy tears. (I actually cried a lot reading this book…) I was just FEELING so much during this entire book!

Not only were the landscapes beautifully written but so was the dialogue. I had no trouble envisioning the world Black was constructing through the absolutely stunning imagery she paints with her writing. I felt those cold caverns and sleeping quarters in the mines. I saw the menacing bramble and felt it close in around me the way it closed in around our main characters. I marveled at the beauty and complexity of the castle in Askeland. Everything that was described left me with no question. I knew exactly what the world around me looked like going through this book and I FELT IT.

The dialogue was no exception. Of course, I have a soft spot for the bits of the story that dealt with the little bit of romance in this book. Specifically the relationship between Raven and Jeddak. Some of the things that were said cut me right to the core. I had literal pangs in my chest through damn near the entire second half of this book. I found myself feeling raw and split open just as the main characters were feeling in those moments and I loved every second of it. I love it when an author can construct a tone for their story that doesn’t feel forced or stretched. It feels natural and it carries so much weight to it. That’s exactly what Black did with this book. She made you feel that you were in that world. Almost as if I was standing in the shoes of the main character. I absolutely love when a book does that and this one absolutely did that for me.

Raven was a strong and intriguing female main character. Despite her lack of memory about her past and where she came from, she stood her ground and was brave. In doing that, she was able to find that her memory wasn’t completely lost to her. As she did things such as picking up a sword or attempting to make a fire, she found that she had these skills though she had forgotten how to use them. The little things that would happen to make her feel familiar kept me guessing and dying to know who she really was. I was eager to learn more right along with her.

Jeddak… He was just everything I love about a male main character. I absolutely loved him and couldn’t wait to get to the chapters giving us his point of view. He knows what he HAS to do but wars internally with what his heart is telling him to do. There’s so much at stake in Jeddak’s world, and yet he is constantly giving pause and acknowledging his faults and the hard truths of his mission. I just thoroughly enjoyed his character so much.

I can’t leave here without mentioning Kah, Jeddak’s bear. I feel like we all need a Kah. Blunt, unrelenting, logical, fiercely loyal… hilariously sarcastic. I enjoyed him so much and loved getting to read the banter that went on between him and Jeddak.

There are so many other characters I’d love to mention and praise but I loved the way I read it blind and met these characters without knowing they were coming or how they would contribute to the story. So I’m not going to get into any of the other characters… BUT there’s another character in this book I’m dying to know more about and I can’t wait for the next book. (Because there’s for sure going to be one… right???!!) I need MORE. I still have so many questions and there’s absolutely no way this is where the story ends. Not with a key character not even entering the picture yet and Raven’s journey just beginning.

If you’re a fan of YA fantasy novels with incredible world-building, relatable characters, an intriguing plot with mysterious side (and main) characters, and a writing style that keeps you flipping pages until you’ve reached the end, this one is for you. Get your copy and suffer with me as we wait for book two! You know you want to.

This was a fabulous indie debut, I enjoyed it from start to finish. This is exactly what I'd want in a YA Fantasy, excellent world building, political intrigue, immersive story telling, a trying quest, relatable characters and a fast paced adventure with slowest of slow burns, just the way I like it. Oh before I forget, there are cool albeit sarcastic animal companions that I loved so much that made me snort laugh more than once. What piqued my interest is definitely laurel's imaginative world full of warring tribes that has magical capabilities based on what tribe they belong to, I thought that is a pretty cool magic system that creates endless potential for future books

Honestly , I am pleasantly surprised how well the author had managed to get a lot of things going on in the book yet never made it overwhelming even with the sizable world building . The plot just flows super smoothly, both Jeddak and Raven are easy to like characters and they get to have their own POV's, I felt like dual narration made the story even better. There are some unexpected turns and twists, while I saw a few coming it never took away my enjoyment when the grand reveal happens, everything comes together cohesively towards the end with a neatly tied bow on the top. I cannot wait for the next book because I feel like an equally promising adventure is coming our way.

If you want a ya fantasy with treacherous journey, strong friendships, betrayals, slow burn romance with a bit of memory loss trope(which is handled flawlessly) then this one is for you!

Thank you so much to Laurel Black for sending me an early copy.

3.5/5.0

Gosh, I can’t decide whether to round up or round down. If it were strictly a personal opinion, I would have to round down because I wasn’t comfortable with - or liked the fact that - Jarrak is engaged and “in love” with one woman while at the same time falling “in love” with another woman. YUCK, that is just NOT okay. The lead up and final conflict also gave me pause because of the completely TSTL actions for both main characters. Jarrak AND Raven suddenly started making the dumbest, most eye-rolling choices!

On the other hand, I am pulled to round up because the story is a surprisingly great one for a debut novel. It carries nuance and emotion that keeps a reader anxiously turning the pages. The action is believable and gripping and the world is an interesting one.

SO… which? Awwww, what the heck, I’ll give in and round up… with reservations.

Oh my this book deserves alllll the stars- do yourself a favor and pick this up asap!!

Why? Let me tell you what there is to love about this gem:

-The two main characters, Jeddak and Raven are both relatable, lovable and conflicted. Jeddak makes Taylor Lautner seem downright homely with his hotness, ability to fight, and his softie heart- everything you could ask for in a book boyfriend ;) Plus his soul is connected to a sarcastic bear- so that’s the coolest thing ever.
Raven is strong, but compassionate, fiery but down-to-earth and selfless. Her character is fascinating because she wakes up as a slave with no memories of who she is- so we are automatically invested in her story.
-Raven and Jeddak’s romance! These two are sizzling, and their romance is the cutest- they laugh together, fight together, save each other’s lives, and heal each other. I may or may not be completely obsessed with them and will be unwell until I find out what happens with them in book two.

-A creative setting made of different tribes whose souls connect to different things in nature. The tribes have unique traditions, cultures, and histories make for an enchanting world and magic system.
-Mind boggling plot twists and a story that twists and turns so fast I couldn’t get my fingers to turn pages fast enough.
-A fascinating mystery- who is Raven and why did she wake up with no memories? And that mysterious map on her hand that only she can read? What the? The mystery propels the story forward and is riveting!
-A fabulous cast of secondary characters who I am so here for and want to be my friends. I can’t wait for more of them in book two.
-TWO love triangles! Now hear me out- I normally have a NO love triangle rule. At all. They stress me out. But these love triangles WORK! They are the best I’ve ever read. They added so much tension and heart twisting to the story, but in the best way!
-The ENDING! I almost perished. In the best way. That's all.

Have I convinced you yet? I’m telling you, this is one of my favorite fantasies I’ve read. It has some Dance of Thieves vibes, which is one of my faves, and I am so here for it! I was sick when I read this book and it was the perfect balm I needed. When I finished it I couldn't sleep cause I was so AMPED about it and couldn't stop fangirling over it. I almost started rereading it right then and there because I already missed the characters. I promise you will NOT be disappointed with this one. Just warning you that you may have a major book hangover like I currently do :)

Content: Kissing, girls are threatened to be sexually assaulted, fantasy violence

A huge THANK YOU to the author for the ARC!! <3

Blazenhell, it’s a new fantasy full of talking bears, feuding tribes, quests, and lost memories. Let’s dive right in. Overall, this is a great new YA fantasy series with so much going for it. What I liked: the first few chapters really throw you into a dark, unforgiving world deep in the mountains. The descriptions are excellent, setting up a feeling of confusion, claustrophobia, and exhaustion. You definitely feel like Raven, having no clue what is going on and clinging to the one character who knows just a tiny bit more than you do, barely holding on for dear life. Great set up for world building, which is really needed in a story full of history, cultures, and previous plot points needing to be explained. What I didn’t like: Jeddak. My guy is such an unreliable narrator and just an annoyingly frustrating teenage…guy. The romance subplot also just isn’t my cup of tea. It very much felt like instalove and I get that they are teenagers with hormones raging so things move rather quickly, but it’s just not for me. Also, YOU ARE ENGAGED. Ugh, anyway. What I loved: the journey was excellent and so incredibly fun. This world is fascinating with magical markets, forests hellbent on killing you, hidden kingdoms, a brewing war, and just so much more. I had such a blast with the pacing of the plot, different places along the journey, and the many twists and turns. Oh and, Kah, our talking bear and only reasonable character in the entire book. Level-headed, logical, focused. We all need a Kah to keep us together. And I didn’t forget the mysterious white-haired, confident warrior who just gets Raven and I am hoping will be a lot more prominant in the next installment. I.AM.INTRIGUED.

If you are looking for a fresh new YA fantasy with a lot to offer to kick off 2024, I highly recommend this book. Thank you to the author, Laurel Black, for reaching out and sending me a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What I liked:
Lost Kingdom is a debut fantasy novel by Laurel Black, due out in January 2024. Lost Kingdom is told from two separate points of view. We have Raven, who is from a lost tribe taken prisoner to work in the rahthlan mines. She has no memories of where she is from; her only clue is the map on her hand. Jeddak is a kovak with a bear familair who is desperate to save his love by finding a lost stone. Both characters have a lost lover or family member they are desperate to save; both will be tricked and tested as they journey together to restore Raven's magic and her memories.
Final Verdict:
Lost Kingdom is a creative, thought-out fantasy novel; it contains exciting characters, betrayal, and a plot that keeps you guessing as you travel along with Jeddak and Raven. The romance is there but not overwhelming for the story; it relies more on the decisions of the two main characters and the path they take. I found the places they travel through quite creative, especially the Forbidden Forest and the Bramble Thorn territories. The ending is open for more books in the series, and I hope we get them.

I'm a clown for not realizing this was the start to a series and now going to have to wait for the sequel because omg that ending??

This was a really strong opening to a new fantasy series and world. I really liked the way that everything was introduced - slowly but giving us enough details that we didn't have to fill in too many gaps on our own. The worldbuilding seemed to be of real importance to the author and it really showed in the way that she wrote it out. I appreciate a good worldbuilding, especially since that can be pretty rare in YA fantasy novels as it's usually just assumed you know the world because it's a vague fantasy realm but this had amazing details!

I loved Raven and how she learned to be herself even without any knowledge of who she was or her family. I thought there could have been a bit more time spent on her state of mind and grief throughout since it seemed to be "done" within the first quarter of the book and brought up only sporadically or when it needed to further the plot. I thought the idea of her having lost her magic was really neat and done in a good way combined with the amnesia.

I really liked Jeddak and Kah though! Their relationship was my favourite in the story and the trust and openess between them was so nice. I thought it was a really good display of friendship (even though Kah is a bear). The magic system for each of the tribes was really well done and explained so it was nice to see how it actually played out when they encountered others.

My only real complaint with this one is that it felt like we were going from one place to another too often and too quickly. We would have big action sequences, which were really well done!, but then we would find out that the way the characters wanted to travel was blocked so now we had to detour. And that was done very often which took away from the suspense of what was going to happen next or if they would escape this encounter. It's a 500 page book and while most times it didn't feel that way because the pacing was really well done, there were times when I felt like everything was just a little too close together.

I liked the inclusion of the other characters to bring some of the history of Raven into the story. I thought the breadcrumb approach was really well thought out to further the story without providing everything to the reader at once. The ending left so many questions for what will happen next and what threads of the story there still are to encounter!

This was a great debut fantasy novel and I HIGHLY recommend you pick it up when it releases in January! I already preordered a Kindle copy because it's just THAT good that I want to own a finished version as well!

Holy Smokes!!!

Wow was this good. The last 1/4 of this was crazy good. This is a wonderful story full of magic, betrayal, warring kingdoms, friendship and maybe love. The connection with the bears was amazing, cool idea. I loved all the tribes and the journey that our characters embark on and all the crazy stuff within the journey. The creature in the lake was both terrifying and awesome and the forest was scary. I'm doing a terrible job of reviewing this but I promise, take a chance and read this. It's one of those stories you find yourself transported to faraway lands and all the troubles and wonders that come with it. Great fantasy, wonderful characters and I'll be pre-ordeting the next book as soon as it's possibly. This is so creative and fun. There were so many secrets and reveals and I didnt see most coming. Go read it, hurry!!!

I've heard nothing but amazing things about this debut YA fantasy, and I'm ecstatic to say that I loved it too! It has everything that makes it a solid fantasy: an impressive world with detailed magic and people from all sorts of cultures and backgrounds, political intrigue and a land at the brink of war, and characters with hidden identities and secrets. This book has it all and balances all of the elements perfectly.

From the very beginning, there is a huge amount of tension, and it only builds throughout. It never really slowed down, even with having a travel plot, because there were so many secrets to unravel and battles to fight (both physically and emotionally). I love the direction the plot is going, and I can't wait for the next book.

I love the characters too. Raven is that fierce female MC we all love, but she has her own issues with trying to get her memories and magic back. Jeddak is complicated in his motives, but it's clear he has a good heart, and I loved the element of him having a bear companion, Kah. The dynamics between Raven and Jeddak were well executed, even if the romance is on the back burner for now.

Overall, this is a solid YA fantasy that I truly enjoyed, and I think a lot of other readers will too. It has similar vibes to An Ember in the Ashes, and I love Laurel Black's engaging writing style. I definitely recommend this one!

"I wasn’t going to sit still and be the quiet shore that his raging storm broke upon." I can hardly believe this was a debut—it was spectacular! There’s a little bit of world-building to tackle at the story’s start, but the characters will quickly steal your heart and tug it along with them on their grand adventure. Jeddack and Kah, his animal (bear) companion, are my favorite characters; their bond is TOP TIER! And speaking of characters: the different settings are characters themselves. Laurel Black breathes new life into that old saying “paint a picture with words.” I felt like I was there in this world—it was all so vivid! And the way that every loose thread wove together to reveal the ending? AND THAT TWIST?! (P.S. There's a love triangle... sorta... in an awesome way... just trust me!) 🪶⛏️🪨🌲🐻📜🤚

I love taking a chance on debuts and The Lost Kingdom was a really fun hit!

If you love books with big quests, hidden maps, lost secrets, mysterious identities and animal companions this is for you! It’s fast paced action packed and will keep you engaged throughout.

I really was impressed with the world building and political intrigue! In a land with warring tribes and enemies on their heels on all sides… this book never seemed overly complicated but gave you just enough to bring things together in a wonderfully cohesive way.

This is a TRUE YA story, romance is very sweet and builds slowly. These characters are very much age appropriate. They have big feelings, impulsive natures but are tender and love hard. It made for some fun dynamics on the adventure.

I had a great time and with that ending, I have to read book 2 to find out what happens next!

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a PR box of Lost Kingdom! My review is entirely my own and based on the ARC copy I received in the PR Box!

Lost Kingdom is a phenomenal YA Fantasy of two people—Raven, a young woman who has lost the entirety of her memories and trapped in slavery to the enemy; and Jeddak, a young man on a mission from his King in order to save his fiance's life. He is looking for the Zavien stone and she has the map to it tattooed to her hand. Trust is a rare thing and Raven must decide if she can trust this stranger and Jeddak must decide where his allegiances lie.

STORY:
I loved this story!! It's such a cozy yet high stakes vibe that really kept me reading. I know that seems weird, but when I'm used to high stakes, high tension Epic Fantasies, this read was so relaxing and just enjoyable, despite the stakes at play. Most of the plot twists and turns were easy to see coming, except for the ending. I did not see the ending coming. 🤣
It was honestly just... an enjoyable vibe read. If you're new to fantasy and want something easy to dip your toes in, this would be a fantastic read for you. The worldbuilding is not long and complicated. It's still wonderfully unique and fantastical enough to sweep you away for hours as you venture with Raven and Jeddak.
The story progresses at a natural pace, the romance didn't feel rushed, Raven's trust didn't feel out of place once it was given, the trials of our heroes made sense and really delved deeper into who they are at their core. The action scenes were a LOT of fun to read! Seriously, just SO So good. I cannot wait for the next book!

*ੈ✩‧₊˚༺☆༻*ੈ✩‧₊˚

WRITING:
I cannot believe this is Laurel's debut novel. Her writing is so good! This book always stuck with me whenever I had to put it down. It STILL sticks with me, despite me having moved on to other tales since finishing it. Hallmark of a great read to me. She's got a wonderful storytelling voice that kept me turning the pages and never feeling lost. The plot and world building was clearly well organized. Laurel has me as a dedicated reader now.

*ੈ✩‧₊˚༺☆༻*ੈ✩‧₊˚

CHARACTERS:

Raven is a JOY and she's incredibly well written. I feel is rough to write characters who have completely lost their memories because that also erases part of their identity. How do you keep them true to their character while also keeping true to the consequences of losing one's entire past? Its a balance that I feel Laurel has done a wonderful job at portraying. Raven is a spit-fire. She's the kind of charge ahead, damn what everyone else says, person and I thoroughly enjoyed watching her frustrate the hell out of Jeddak with her inability to do what he says. 🤣

Jeddak was also great. I enjoyed his "plan is 25% fool-proof so... I'll swing it don't worry" kind of attitude. It led to a lot of great moments between him and his animal companion, Kah. Jeddak's character arc was also a joy to witness, as he struggled with the desire to do right by Raven, but also to save his fiance. He was a man torn in two and watching him grow and develop was great.

Kah. I loved Kah. He is 100% my favorite character. I am petitioning for Kah stuffed animals because I need one.

*ੈ✩‧₊˚༺☆༻*ੈ✩‧₊˚

ENJOYMENT:

I LOVED this! I feel so honored that Laurel chose me to receive a PR box of Lost Kingdom, otherwise I might have missed this fantastic YA Fantasy! I highly highly recommend this book! It's a great start to a series that promises to be one hell of a wild ride. I cannot wait to see where Jeddak and Raven's adventures take them next!

Laurel Black has created a fantasy tale with a nail-bitingly difficult and twisty quest, multi-faceted dual protagonists, and an impressive array of secondary characters. And, she believes in what she’s created and is willing to do the work needed to get the word out there.

When Laurel first approached me to read and review Lost Kingdom, she was charmingly relentless. When I didn’t respond right away to her email request, she followed up with a link to a teaser video that she’d created just for me, addressing me by name in it. I’ve got to admit, that sort of attention is hard to resist, so I said yes. She immediately mailed me a mysterious postcard, assuring me that my book would be on the way soon.

The package was well worth the wait. Inside, I found an impressively large, heavy paperback novel, a glossy bookmark, a black envelope with gold lettering and sealing wax containing a personal note, and a mysterious drawstring pouch containing a small rune stone and a key. She’d drawn me into her world before I’d even opened the book. But once I started reading, it was hard to stop. The paperback version is over 450 pages long, but I was turning those pages so fast I think I created a breeze in my room.

The world of Eastlandra is filled with a variety of kingdoms, each of which is home to a tribe gifted with their own unique manifestation of magic. From soul bonded bear familiars to bird folk who can soar the skies, there’s diversity at every turn.

Raven is a prisoner, forced to work under appalling conditions in a dismal mineral mine. Her only clue to who she might be is a map that’s embedded in the palm of her hand—which she can’t read. In a world filled with magic, she’s somehow been rendered tribeless, with no memories and no magic.

Oh the other hand, Jeddak knows exactly who he is. He’s a Kovak, soul bound to Kah, the bear familiar that’s always with him. Kah’s not just a novelty, he’s a useful, interesting character in his own right. And he’s sarcastic. A big furry snarky bear familiar? Yes please! Jeddak and Kah are on a quest to find a stone that must be brought back to the Kovak king in order to free his betrothed, who’s being held prisoner as collateral to ensure he completes his quest.

With these two protagonists taking turns telling their story in every other chapter, the reader gets two points of view from equally important protagonists. The author has done a fine job of creating their characters to be distinctly different from each other, as is apparent each time the point of view changes. They stay true to their perceptions of what’s important as each tries to complete their personal quest while coping with their traveling companion’s quirks.

For me, the plot is one very long road trip, the path of which is determined by the decisions the two main characters make. This path is complicated by hidden agendas they are keeping secret from each other. There’s also a slow-burn romance threaded throughout the adventure, but it doesn’t overwhelm the story. Both Raven and Jeddak are determined to reach their goals, and are honestly caught off-guard by their growing feelings for each other. Being young, they make plenty of mistakes, misinterpreting each others actions at every turn. You’ll cheer them on, while wishing you could slap some sense into them, too.

The ending is satisfying, while leaving enough loose threads dangling to let us know a sequel is coming. I’m looking forward to it! Perhaps I’ll need to start sending the author encouraging postcards to make sure she stays on task.

I had the opportunity to ask Laurel Black that classic question readers always wonder about: Where did her story idea come from? And she said…

“The idea for Lost Kingdom came to me when I woke up one morning. There’s a girl, her name is Raven, and she can turn into a bird. That was it. Nothing more. It would have been easy to ignore the idea. I was already in the middle of writing another novel at the time and told myself I needed to focus if I ever wanted to get my first book published. But the image of Raven wouldn’t leave me. Every time I went for a walk or had a moment of free time, Raven’s story kept building in my mind.

“At first, it was just bits and pieces–the different tribes, the bear companion, the LOTR-like world. But when I finally decided to sit down and write an outline, the story began pouring out of me. I ended up loving this story so much that I paused writing my other book and began this one. It took me 5 months to write the first draft and then 3 (long) years after that to get it ready to publish. In that time, my initial idea has come a long way and become what I hope others will feel is a fun, fast-paced adventure that they don’t want to put down.”

Mission accomplished, Laurel. Lost Kingdom is a creative, thoroughly thought-out fantasy, with a plot that keeps you guessing as you travel through Eastlandra alongside Jeddak and Raven. I found their path to be filled with fascinating people and creatively imagined locations. An enjoyable trip, indeed.

Lost Kingdom releases January 17, 2024, but you can, and should, pre-order it now at Amazon.

If you’re in the mood for a fast paced and intricate fantasy, filled with forbidden romance, animal sidekicks and sooo many twists and turns, then boy do I have a book for you. Though I did feel the writing fell on the younger side of the YA age range, I found myself so invested in this story and characters and the ending left me desperate for more.

Raven can’t remember anything. Since she was taken into the mines and forced to work as a slave for the enemy she has no idea who she was, where she came from, if anyone is even looking for her. Her only clue, a mysterious map that’s tattooed on her hand supposed to lead to a stone lots of people are searching for, including Jeddak. When Jeddak learns that Raven is his only hope to find the stone the pair are quickly forced together, though secrets and deceit follow them at every turn. Raven isn’t sure she can trust Jeddak and is only following him to reclaim her memories, Jeddak would rather he could just take the map and go, but Raven is the only one who can read it, so a tentative alliance is formed. An alliance that swiftly turns from a hindrance to something more. Once their feelings start coming to light, both Raven and Jeddak will be forced to make some hard decisions, decisions that could save both their kingdoms, or bring them burning down to the ground.

One thing I loved about this story was the world building. Black does a brilliant job of weaving it all throughout the story, giving it to us piece by piece so we never feel overwhelmed and avoid the dreaded info dumps. I loved the idea of all the different magical kingdoms and thoroughly enjoyed learning about all their powers and even seeing some getting put to use. Jeddak is from the Kovak tribe, a people that are bound to bears, and there were others who had power over the land etc. But the tribe we learn the most about is the Zavian, the tribe Raven is from, even though she has no memory. This is a tribe shrouded in secrets, hidden away from the rest for good reason, but now in the spotlight thanks to the different people wanting to find and steal a stone that is incredibly precious to them.

The story is told from the alternating POV’s of Raven and Zeddak. Both of these are unique in that Raven has no idea who she is, why she has this map on her hands etc whereas Zeddak knows a lot more than he lets on to Raven and so their is a definite power imbalance between the two. Raven is incredibly strong, even without her memory, she may not know who she is or where she belongs but she believes deep down that there are people out there looking for her and she will do whatever it takes to escape the mines, even if that means allying with Zeddak, a boy she hardly knows. Zeddak needs Raven for one reason and one reason alone and he isn’t afraid to hide the truth and pretend to know less than he does to achieve it. Though different in a lot of ways, they are also two people simply trying to protect their kingdom and their people.

The romance was fun and a kind of slow burn enemies to lovers/forbidden romance. Raven has no idea whether she has or had someone special and until her memory returns she has no way of knowing. Zeddak however, is betrothed to someone back home and he spends a lot of the book torn between his growing love for Raven, and his feelings for the girl he left behind. I did see the inklings of a love triangle beginning to form, something I’m hoping is cleared up in the next book because it’s not a favourite trope of mine at all, but for this book the romance was sweet and I especially enjoyed hearing Zeddak’s bear ridicule him over his growing feelings.

It’s a story filled with plot twists. You think you know where the story is going and then bam! one twist after another that lead to an extremely action packed ending. Black’s writing make for a fast paced story anyway, but the closer I got to the end, the harder I found it to put the story down, desperate to know what happens next. If you like your stories filled with banter, conflicted and easy to empathise with characters, plenty of intrigue and danger I can’t recommend this enough.

Oh I loved it! Outstanding debut!

Completely unique magic system and world full of tribal kingdoms, each with their own histories… but the world building was done gradually and didn’t bog down the plot or character development.

Speaking of plot, it was fast paced and action filled from start to finish- especially the last 25%- I couldn’t put it down!

The main characters Raven, Jeddak & Kah were everything. I was very quickly invested and rooting for them. There were some interesting side characters, too- some I hope we see more of in future books, and some I hope we see vanquished in future books!

The romance & tension is perfect. It’s YA, but it read a bit more NA closed door - and I loved it. Excited to see where it goes in future as there were all kinds of hurdles and twists for everyone involved.

The ending has me excited for book 2! (It’s not a cliffhanger… enough is resolved for a satisfying ending, but enough is left open and exciting that I need it!)

Thank you to the author for the chance to read an advanced copy!

Wow, this book was truly amazing and mind blowing, I can’t believe that this is the author’s debut novel. She’s incredibly talented and I already cannot wait what she’ll write in the future.

Lost Kingdom was everything and more that I could have ever imagined in a YA fantasy novel. It was adventurous, exciting, and the most irresistible page turner. The characters were so lovable and strong. I feel like I’ve known them my whole life!
The world was fantastic, I loved the tribes the magical elements and the storyline.

Thank you so much Laurel Black for reaching out to me and sending an ARC of your wonderful debut novel in exchange for my honest review!

We'd like to start this review off by thanking Laurel Black for reaching out. We were lucky enough to receive an ARC.

This book is a fresh take on YA fantasy. The world building and lore were written in a way that was understandable and easily followed without overwhelming the reader.

From the get go we were enthralled by Raven, her lost memories and her road to freedom.
Jeddaks story was one of potential heartbreak and misery and we couldn't help but root for him even when he was being an idiot. Kah was a breath of fresh air always keeping Jeddak in check and oftentime being the voice of reason!

The slow burn, enemies to lovers plot was expertly intertwined into the journey the protagonists found themselves on.

Highly recommend this to anyone wanting to dip their toes into fantasy before diving into bigger, more complex worlds.

Five glowing stars!!

I think Laurel Black’s debut Lost Kingdom might just be the fantasy novel to reignite my love of the genre. Enigmatic characters, a layered and intricate world, and an epic journey story that I couldn’t put down—but didn’t want to end.

When the author reached out via my blog and invited me to read her debut novel, kindly including the first few chapters, I was hooked from the first page. Then my copy arrived with so many fun and personalized extras, which only made me more excited to continue the tale. (Visit my blog to see the unboxing!)

In Lost Kingdom we meet Raven who has been taken prisoner and forced to work in the mineral mines. She has lost her memory and her ability to use magic. All she knows is that she has a mysterious map tattooed on her palm, a map that many people are after.

Including Jeddak, a handsome Kovak warrior who needs the map to locate a powerful stone that will secure the release of his betrothed. Raven and Jeddak (and Jeddak’s faithful companion bear, Kah) will become tenuous allies, but have important secrets they are keeping from each other.

Lost Kingdom is told from Raven and Jeddak’s alternating points of view, but I was never confused about whose voice was being used. The author succeeds in giving them each a distinct presence, and even more helpful, the physical copy had the name of the speaker at the top of the chapter pages. This may be something that’s common, but it’s not anything I’ve ever come across. It was a little detail that was helpful and fun and pure genius.

As I was reading this young adult fantasy, I couldn’t help but make connections with other fantasy stories—from Star Wars to Lord of the Rings to Game of Thrones—but it was always just more of a feeling of inspiration, reminders of some of my favorite aspects of those past fantasies that gave me a thrill while reading.

I read this one slowly, not necessarily by choice, life just got in the way. However, I read the last third of the novel almost in one sitting, unable to finally set it down. I’m actually glad I read it more slowly now because it allowed me to ruminate on what I was reading instead of just flying through it. I could appreciate the author’s attention to detail, the phenomenal dialogue, and the layers to the story.

I haven’t even mentioned the romance, but oh what a build-up! Such delicious angst. And while there is not only one, but two love triangles, all you love-triangle-haters can take heart! They’re handled well, important to the plot, and not the focus of the book.

I cannot say enough positive things about this debut. I am thoroughly impressed and I will be impatiently waiting for the next book. I have a feeling Lost Kingdom will end up on my list of top books for the year, and I can only hope it gets all the attention it deserves!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you to Laurel Black for providing me with a copy.

What a fantastic debut!
I started reading I'm like "okay okay this is cool.." and then I keep reading and I'm like
"ooooo okay yes!" and then it turns into
"Wow alright LETS GO!" 😂And it just continued to snowball in the best way until I was so hooked and I had to know what would happen to the characters!!

Such a fun story of magic, adventure, villians, various tribes, impending war, slow-burn romance, and awesome animal sidekicks!

This is a classic feeling, TRUE-to-the-name-of-the-genre, YOUNG ADULT fantasy romance, and I loved that about it!

Totally enjoyed this story and I can't wait to see where things go in book 2!!

*If you enjoyed The Tiger's Curse series, or similar type series, definitely give this one a try!!

*This is a sweet romance and no language!

Extraordinary debut novel
Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2024
Lost Kingdom does not read as a debut novel and it is easy to see the care and attention that Laurel gave to her story, character development and keeping the reader engaged from the beginning of the book to the very end. I had the opportunity to "proofread" Lost Kingdom prior to its official release date but unfortunately for Laurel I enjoyed reading Lost Kingdom so much that I found it difficult to focus on the proofreading process. I am an avid reader and typically read well over 100 books a year and this has been one of my favorite new series. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I thought there was great world building in this book with the different tribes and their abilities. I was a little annoyed at Jeddak for basically cheating on his fiance, but when I got to the plot twist at the end it all came together. I wish they explained where the Rathalans came from. Also what is the significance of the key that is on the cover, they described it once in the book but didn’t really give a backstory.

I wanna give a big thankyou to Laurel Black for giving me the oppoturnity to be one of the ARC readers!

This is the definition of perfection.

-

➶ My thoughts about the world-building

Lets talk about the world-building first! I am so amazed by how Laurel Black keeps the world-building perfect the whole story and made it easy to follow! I totally love the magic system. The way there are tribes that have their own uniqueness both in tradition and ability, the way there are enemies, and mysteries that need to be solved!

-

➶ My thoughts about the characters

I absolutely love all the character developments here!! The characters other than the main still got the attention and importance in the story which once again amazes me.

ᡣ𐭩 Raven
Waking up as a slave, no memories, with only a little clue, and those mysteries of her make this a page-turning story! Despite her lost memory, Raven comes up as a brave, strongheaded, but also a caring character!

ᡣ𐭩 Jeddak
I love this man so much, like, AAAAAAA!!
Jeddak is from the Kovak tribe. Like the other Kovakians, he has a bear that connected to his soul named Kah. He and Kah is hunting the Zavien stone according to the order of his father, the king. If he failed, his dear bethroded will be executed.
No lie, his words really are feet-kicking. He's like the type of men who will risk everything for the one he loves. Jeddak is now one of my favorite book bf!

-

➶ My thoughts about the chemistry

Extra love for the chemistry between Raven and Jeddak!! How their feelings grew more along their journey but also became complicated, how they exactly know what they really want, and more things about them that hang me over this story and craving for the next to know what will happen.

I adore the friendships too! They protect each other also unite and fight together.

-

➶ My thoughts about the writing

My most favorite part of this book is the way it is written with two POVs (Jeddak and Raven's) so we could know their motives. This story is very beautifully written. I fell inlove with each words. It can't get out of my mind like stucked in there.

I will recommend this book to people who love..

✅️ Romantasy (YA)

✅️ Forced proximitry

✅️ Dual povs

✅️ Unique magic system

✅️ An epic and amazing fantasy story

‼️ You can skip this part if it seems like a spoiler for you‼️

Raven was captured by the Rathalons and now works in the mines, and wants to escape, but she has no memory of who she was before she was captured. All she has is her name, and a dream with her brother in it. Meanwhile, Jeddak is trying to find the Zavien stone to save his betrothed from his king who is holding her hostage. He was told he would find a clue or map in Malengard where the mines, and he does, but the map is not quite what he expected.

This was a very enjoyable and adventurous read! I loved the world! The shifters, the different tribes, the different unique places we go to and then the magic!

I always wonder how an author will do with a character that has memory loss, and Laurel did a great job! Theresa whole time Raven is struggling with her identity, while also subconsciously remembering little things and forgetting others. She slowly learns about herself and you wonder the whole time when she will get her memory back. Raven is a fierce female character, a bit petty and annoying at times 😅, but I liked her development and look forward to seeing how she continues to grow in the next book!

Jeddak was a bit of a dark horse. Tall, dark, broody and handsome and he has a bear 😂 but he’s so sketchy and obviously has one goal in mind, to save his betrothed. I loved seeing him change as him and Raven travel together and learn about each other and get to know one another and his guilt starts to eat at him. And then you wonder, will he change his course or not? Both had very good developments!

And then the romance that slowly developed and yet didn’t quite get there. A great slow burn that leaves you hoping they’ll get together and then, well, you’ll see 😉

I wish the world development had a bit more detail to it, I mean it just felt like I was told things, but I wanted to see or experience them or have more detail about the world and its languages. And to me this was a very YA book too.

Overall, a great story with some side characters I really liked and look forward to seeing more of, plus more of this world in the next book!

I received a gifted copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I can't believe this is Laurel Black's debut novel! This story, filled with adventures, friendships, secrets, and lies, was so captivating that I couldn't put it down. I needed to know more and more, especially about Raven's identity. Who is she? Why is she a prisoner? Why can't she remember anything? So many things to discover!

Raven, our FMC, is an enslaved prisoner at Malengard, a death camp. She has no idea why she's there, who she is, what tribes she belongs to, anything! I absolutely loved reading Raven; I empathised with her struggles and memory loss. And despite having suffered so much, she's a strong, feisty and courageous woman. I loved how we discovered her identity along with her.

Jeddak is our determined, brave, confident, and, obviously, handsome MMC. I loved how decisive and strong-willed he was on his mission and about protecting Raven. My feelings about this man were all over the place! I can't say much without spoilers, so I won't elaborate. Sorry!

And don't even get me started on Kah, Jeddak's bonded bear. I love him SO much! And yes, he can speak, but mostly only to Jaddek. He was so fun to read!

Lost Kingdom is a wonderfully well-written fantasy with a marvellous and intriguing world and magic system. It gave me similar vibes to The Prison Healer and The Kiss of Betrayal. I'm so excited about this story, about what's coming, about Raven, Jeddak, and especially Skyler! I just need more. I literally can't wait for the sequel!

If you love YA fantasy, intriguing characters, magic, and more, you must give this book a chance.

Thank you so much to Laurel Black for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

REVIEW:

4/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

-This was a solid YA fantasy novel! Right from the beginning, it gripped me with the dark, gritty mine setting and FL Raven’s predicament. She’s trapped in an enemy mine/slave camp without her magic and can’t remember who she is! Created a lot of good tension right away!
-Then we have Jeddak, the ML, who is trying to find a mysterious stone in order to save his beloved. And adventure ensues!
-I thought the world-building and magic system were well thought out and interesting, with society divided into different tribes that are each known for different abilities.
-A large portion of the novel is devoted to travel. So if you like travel plots, this would be for you! There were moments where I felt things were maybe a tad slow for me, but then there would be more action happening soon after to balance things out and I enjoyed reading about the different locations they went to.
-I loved Jeddak’s companion animal bear Kah and the inner conversations that they shared! It often made me laugh how they teased each other 😂
-I also found the romance interesting, but I won’t say too much in order to avoid spoilers 😁
-There were a good number of twists and reveals to keep the reader engaged throughout the story. And the ENDING! Wow. Wow.
-Laurel Black is definitely an author to watch! If you’re looking for more indie YA books, give this one a try!
