*More like 3.5 stars than 3.*

Most of the reason why this volume wasn't a complete success was because of the protagonist, Sumire. Her boldness was both a help and a hinderance. At times it allowed her to admirably stand up for the love interest, but at others it made her stupidly put herself at risk or make rash decisions with complete disregard for her own wellbeing and without a single logical thought. However, as if to combat the obviousness of that problem, this was a manga that was quite self-aware. Other characters called her out on this boldly wilful behaviour and whilst that was to be appreciated, it didn't change her attitude in the slightest. She bulldozed through any reasonable piece of advice with the stubbornness of an ox.

The other issue with this vol was its lack of commitment to being anything other than a completely lovey-dovey romance. The mystery and intrigue built up from the previous vol was swept away with barely any exploration as if it wasn't the most promising aspect of this manga to begin with. When there was a blaring opportunity for conflict or genuinely interesting character interactions, it dipped its toe into that lake, realised it would be a cold plunge, and chickened out at the last second. Then it rolled in the dandelion fields of repeated love declarations like everything was suddenly hunky-dory and sailed off into a very sudden and cheap-feeling happily-ever-after style ending.

Ninomiya keeps trying to push Sumire away, but he’s really bad at it. Adorable kids enter the picture, family bonds are tough on all sides, and somebody won’t take no for an answer. Probably not who you’re expecting. And this book fails the Bechdel test hard.

Despite the fact that that whole “struck by Lightning” line might be, literally, the most cringeworthy line of manga ever written, the first volume of this series was strangely compelling and that happily continues on with this volume.

Make no mistake, this is the wishiest wish fulfillment that ever fulfillingly wished to have a wish fulfilled with fulfilling wishing. Not only does our dear teenage girl get a hot older guy, he is somehow on site in class and there’s a lot of surprisingly zen acceptance of this fact.

But it’s a fun story and that is literally down to one thing - Sumire. Sumire explodes the bonds of what is inherently a ridiculous story by being an absolute force of romantic nature in her own right. The word incorrigible has rarely been so apt or so accurate.

Ninomiya showed the cracks in his facade and that was the end for him. Sumire is smitten and there’s no chance for the guy. Even his hopeless ‘I’ll show you why you need to protect yourself against guys’ moment turns out to be less scary and more Sumire’s dream coming true.

When they meet at a fancy party (there’s an entire other review to be written about this manga’s fashion choices in general and specifically about what the heck Sumire is wearing to this occasion) and Ninomiya gets a little tipsy, best believe our innocent young waif is about to pump him for information. She’s ruthless!

Said party also brings Ninomiya’s grandfather into the equation, who is clearly one of those charmless charming people who grate on the nerves. He’s a man who obviously gets his way constantly, and given Sumire’s actions I can see him being a proper obstacle moving forward.

In fact, this series wisely dispenses quickly with the confessing (Sumire is so very expressive sometimes) in favour of changing the ‘does he like me’ to the less used ‘I can’t be with you’. There’s a bunch not being said, especially with the introduction of Ninomiya’s precocious sister at the start of the book, that is way more interesting than yet another turn down the same path.

A couple of other amusing swerves make this fun - there’s clearly a ‘stumble upon somebody in undress’ segment that has its cake and eats it after one person takes a door to the face. Likewise, Sumire’s model bestie is hilariously pragmatic AND against type for what friends usually suggest in stories like this.

Mixed in with this, one character from volume one gets pulled back in, named, terrorized, and then turned into a side character (he even realizes this) in a really swift nip in the bud for the old potential rival/obvious jerk. And there’s even a date I didn’t get into!

There’s just a ton in here, anchored by Sumire herself. Ninomiya’s actions are a little clearer and I like the direction with his implausible self. He just needs a smidgen more personality than he currently has. It’s not flying just yet, but this taxi down the runway has been darn good.

3.5 stars - this series is going to wrench a full 4 stars out of me at some point, I can just feel it, but not quite yet (update - I did it this time because, upon reflection, I had so much fun reading this). Still, this is great stuff because Sumire’s so freaking determined. She might not exactly be thinking this through, but you can’t fault her tenacity.

It’s a read, but nothing gripping so far.

RECAP: she goes to his place after running into his sister, she sees him shirtless, accompanies her dad to a publishing event and runs into him. He is drunk, she saves him from his granddad’s orders, he confesses and forgets. Then a classmate starts flirting with her. After he hears that guy is playing her, he confronts him. Then they ditch school for a date where she asks him to kiss her and he does but with his hand between them.

All right, series, you got me. Between Sumire's endearing chutzpah (I love when she confronts Reo's grandfather), Ino who very happily goes from romantic rival to super wing man, and getting some answers about Reo's past (though not too many!), this absolutely surpassed its first volume. I've enjoyed each of Mikimoto's series just a little more than the previous, and I think she may have finally truly hooked me with this one.

The age gap kinda bothers me, I wish they were closer in age. Like in the beginning, it was mentioned that he's 20 and I was like okaaaaay 3 years gap is fineee I guess (despite her being a minor) but then in the summary he's 20 SOMETHING???? Bruhhhhh 😭

But besides that, their interactions are cute as well as the art style. The author always draws them in cute and trendy clothes, and I love it.

This review covers the first five books in the ”Lightning and Romance” series by Mikimoto, Rin

I am not really a big fan of the age-gap trope. Mainly it's because either the story is written well or giving me the ick.
I tell you this because it means I expect a lot from this trope before I want to spend my time buying and reading multiple volumes over several years.

I binge-read the first five volumes within one day.

I wish this story didn't try to sell itself as an age-gap story because the age gap is not the big taboo.
I won't spoil it for you, but Reo (the male MC) and Sumire (the female MC) met when they were younger. Their meeting was caused by a horrible background story, and their meeting again and romance will cause grief and worries from their families.

Sumire is new at romance and questions her sanity in falling for the bad guy who has a past as a Yakuza, but she sees a different side to Reo – he's a caring big brother, he's kind and a cat lover – so she makes advances.
Now, Reo is very adamant about not loving, nor wanting to date Sumire, but in reality, he's a cinnamon bun who blushes at her advances, and he's in danger of giving in when she's near.
I love Sumire's guts. Many female MCs in shojo are either subdued or positive in an airheaded way. She's neither. Sumire is very intelligent and acts based on her morals, giving her this older-than-her-age vibe and she seems like a person who thinks before she acts. So her dreams of love with Reo are the big thing.

There's a seven years age-gap between the MCs. Like I said, the age gap has (so far) nothing to say in the story. It progresses the sex talk (Sumire is very open and invites to this sort of conversation) so if you like a bit more steam in your shojo stories, I think this will meet your needs.

It's the cinnamon bun hero, the gutsy heroine, and the mystery of this horrible past that might split them apart, that makes me want to read this series.

Gosh, I loveeee how straightforward and bold Sumire is!! Sure, it can lead to some awkward situations and possible issues, but for the most part, she's just the right amount of unpredictability to enjoy.

We learned a bit about Reo's background and mysterious history with Sumire, although you can tell there's much more to be said. What's the deal with his "grandpa" for one thing!? I'm also super curious to see when the author explains how Reo and Sumire connected in the past — how she somehow "saved" him.

All in all, this volume was absolutely adorable, and I appreciated the peeks we got into Reo's soft interior. I can't wait to read the next installment and see what else we learn!

So viele Geheimnisse, man man.

While I liked this manga, I’m going to choose to not read any more volumes.
While I still admire Sumire’s boldness, in certain situations it seems more like recklessness and I’m worried about the potential conflict that can bring to the story further on in the series. Meanwhile with Reo, I don’t like how wishy-washy he is with his actions and feelings; I understand he’s putting on a tough persona to hide how bashful he is but if he really wanted to protect Sumire, he could’ve tried a bit more.

It is bad I’m simping for the FL more than ML??!

Sumire is so outspoken, bold and straightforward! She has that potential bad bitch energy but then turned to turtle instead. So rare I came across female lead like this in shojo comics! The main characters seem to represent an awkward lady killer and a shy man-eater. The wall slammed scene literally took my breath away.
