"My mother said that people who protect others even when it means getting hurt are really kind. She said being kind means you're very strong."

I'm so thankful this got published in English! 😭😭😭

I LOVED being back in this story world and getting to know Richard! He is SO earnest and deeply reminds me of Sariphi! Though there were a few moments that almost reminded me of Leo, and it made me happy on both accounts! However, Richard really is his own unique self, and deeply enjoyed following him on his new adventure. I was sad to know what led him to start it, but I'm enjoying his new "masters" a lot!

Speaking of, Subaru and Ravi really are the perfect duo! They are very different but liked them equally as Ravi is pretty grumpy, but is also caring. Subaru on the other hand is very kind, but also can be sneaky (if that's the right word). You can tell quickly though that they like Richard and want to help this young little beast.

One thing I don't think I anticipated was how action-packed this first volume would be! I should have prepared myself because the original series is, but for a new journey beginning, Richard really is experiencing a lot and almost felt a little bad for him! He's got a big heart though and really willing to give his all, and think that really shined through at the end!

Lastly, if you are a fan of the original series, you'll be pleasantly surprised to find TWO bonus stories centering around Sariphi!! EEEEPPP! I was SO excited!! However, I didn't appreciate how sad the second one made me. LOL!

Very very excited for the next volume as this is such a wonderful start to a new series!

This is a spin-off series of Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts. I hadn't read it, but it wasn't necessary. It's set in a kingdom of beasts that's hidden in miasma from humans, and the two realms have fought for centuries. Humans are required to send a maiden regularly to the king as a sacrifice, only for the two to fall in love. It has lead to a era of peace.

This series is about the son of the original pair. Richard is nine, almost ten, and an adorable little fluffy beast of indetermined breed. He learns that in order for there to be a lasting peace with humans, he has to summon a powerful beast spirit when he turns ten. But he can't do any magic yet. He's a lot loved and a little spoiled, and it worries him that he'll ruin the peace.

On a whim, he runs away from home to train to become a powerful summoner. He runs into trouble immediately, and is rescued by two bounty-hunters, a rabbit beast named Ravi and human woman who once was a sacrifice herself named Subaru. For those worrying, king's guards have already found Richard and are keeping an eye on him from the distance.

Richard lies about his identity (he calls himself Leon) and begs them to teach him. With some initial grumbling they agree. Their methods of teaching him are odd but very educational. Subaru teaches him the value of earning his own money, and Ravi teaches him tenacity. Richard is very juvenile and still a mom's little cub, but with every task he grows a little. And he has a good heart that helps him.

This was the first volume so the story of Richard's quest is only beginning. I liked all the characters, the cute little Richard, grumpy Ravi and the energetic Subaru who reminds Richard of his mom. The end is a cliffhanger with an old enemy of Ravi's showing up.

This was very cute and sweet story, educational but without preaching, with fun action. There were snippets from the original at the end, the first and almost last chapters, and I think I like this one better. It's not a romance, so if you're looking for a continuation of the original story, this isn't it. There seems to be several volumes of this already and I'd be happy to read more.

I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

How did I not know there was a spinoff?!

Thank you to Edelweiss and Yen Press for the DRC and for alerting me of this beauty.

The story picks up years after Richard is born, right before he's supposed to become an "adult" in the beast world. He's afraid and feeling inadequate so he starts out on a journey and thankfully meets some less than shady individuals who turn out to be bounty hunters. And bam, he's off on his journey.

Here I hear this a lot as a saying: only adults have to choose. The implication is that when you are a child, you don't have to make decisions. You do as you're told. And when you do have to choose, you can choose to have it all without repercussion. Our young protagonist though shows a different side. Children have to choose as well. But the repercussion remains the same--lost innocence and growing pains. Like the only human in the story, I hope it doesn't happen though. I hope it's possible for our young protagonist to remain as he is. Bright and hopeful. To always believe that there is goodness in everyone. I know all the stories say otherwise. But still. I can hope.

The Sequel to Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts and it is about Saraphi and Leon’s son, Richard. Richard is nine and a bit of a free-spirit but he learns he is to summon a beast spirit when he is 10 to continue the peace. The only problem is... he can’t use any magic yet

This is a sweet and fun story about Richard and his growth into the king he will be. There are several nods to the original series. I can’t wait to continue reading!

Many thanks to Edelweiss and Yen Press for an advanced copy in exchange for a review.
