Shepherd Security #14

Operation: Reluctant Angel

Rate this book
From Amazon #1 Best-Selling Author Margaret Kay.

Book #14 in the Shepherd Security Series.

Shepherd Security field engineer Laura Lee ‘Lah-lee’ Saxton declined Operator training. She also voiced her opposition to working in the Operations Center as an analyst. She failed to complete and submit her required coursework to earn her FBI Credentials. Although she is a top-notch electrical engineer, she was the first person at Shepherd Security to ever be placed on disciplinary probation.

But there are reasons for her reluctance to assume these duties that no one at the agency knows, secrets she had kept since she was four years old and also secrets related to a crime that occurred ten years earlier while she was in college. These incidents were major moments that shaped her adult life.

A self-described introvert, she has never felt part of any team, including her Shepherd Security Team designated Echo. Until her appendix ruptures and the outpouring of support she receives from all the members of the team, including many of the wives, makes her realize she is not only part of the team, but she is also a part of the family.

It is while she is sedated on pain killers that a realization comes to her that is fueled by twisted dreams from an operation the team conducted recently in New Orleans—Abusers don’t stop abusing. If they’re not stopped, they leave more victims in their wake.

During a solo cursory investigation as she recovers from her surgery reveals an alarming pattern. She easily identifies at least ten other women who may have been similar victims at her alma mater. That’s when she realizes she needs help if she’s going to take the investigation further.

When you have kept secrets your whole life, it’s hard to trust.

Shepherd Security recruits only the best. They can protect someone in trouble like no other because they work in the shadows, invisible, and outside the system where the rules don’t apply–just the oath they took. They don’t exist. That’s also why they can break any suspect and can get answers out of anyone accused. That’s when they’re called in, when someone must be protected at all costs, or when answers must be obtained, by any means necessary.

Warning, this story is realistic, with adult language and content on the way to the HEA. This is book 14 in the Shepherd Security Series. Even though the story does continue from book to book, each is a stand-alone story and can be read without reading the prior book(s), but they are best enjoyed in order.

Margaret has given us a bit of everything to make this a page turner. There is action, suspense, drama, danger, tension, angst, emotions, secrets, and a hell of a lot more. Twists and turns abound that you don’t see coming.

The action starts right from the beginning and keeps on coming. It is also a bit of a rollercoaster ride, but this is one series you will get addicted too. It did take me a while to get into the story and used to Margarets storytelling but once I did it is easy to enjoy the stories.

Make sure to start at the beginning as characters do cross over. The stories are told through multiple POV’s as you really get inside the characters heads and know what they are thinking and learn who they are better. These wonderful characters are well written, complex, and fully realised. These alpha men and women are saviours and will do anything to protect those who they love and those who need it to fight against evil and those who wrong others.

There is religious overtones which often had me wondering if I would continue, and the sexual references are left more to the imagination, but the stories soon outweighed all that.

A definite must read book and series!

This is one of my favorite series, and it just keeps getting better and better. The story starts at the same time as the ending of the previous book, which goes on to include a complex story that is shocking, horrific, and heartbreaking. However, the amazing group at Shepherd Security, doing what they do best, takes care of their fellow agent, as well as helps her to find the courage, strength, and determination to face a horrible time in her life, but to also do something about it. It's certainly a great story that you won't want to miss.
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.

Laura Lee Saxton didn’t like working in Ops but liked Caleb Smith and really liked Brad DuPont. She also had the honor of being the only person ever, that the team knew of that was in jeopardy of losing her job for not getting her creds. Laura Lee did the work but after seeing the approval on a teammate’s credentials triggered memories and nightmares of a decade old trauma. Confiding in Brad she’d been raped and blackmailed by her professor who controlled FBI credentials. Brad convinced Laura Lee into taking the issue to Shepherd.

Seconds after Laura Lee finished and showed her list of other potential victims of this scheme, Shepherd set the team to working on a plan. It was immediately clear to the team the pivotal careers and locations gave comfort to the enemy with a foothold with far-reaching ramifications. Meanwhile, Brad and Laura Lee cautiously move toward the romantic relationship they each wanted but was unsure the other did. Also, Laura Lee has a chance to work her way up the skill ladder.

Laura Lee was recruited by Madison (who is an member of the Shepherd Securities) to be an engineer at the organization. Sam Shepherd (owner and boss) decides (after hearing some of the men discussing this with him) to have everyone trained. This will enable for people to move from one team to another and be able to assist on any case they would receive. Laura Lee was suppose to get her FBI credentials by completing her course work. She did complete the work but found out that the person who signed off of the work, was a professor at her University. Him and her had a history which she never told anyone. While she is recuperating from surgery she decides to investigate if any women had the same thing happen to them. She prepares an presentation to give and everyone finds out what happened to her. The teams help figure out what is going on and in the mean time her and Brad form a relationship. The book was just as good as the prior ones. I will be sorry when it ends.

Brad and Laura Lee

I will admit I haven’t cared much for Laura Lee in the past books. She wasn’t a teammate, was snarky and refused to cooperate with the powers that be. This book changed my opinion. The things she has lived through and kept bottled out finally came out when her best friend Brad told her she needed to explain herself. Brad is a member of OPs. Now she’s determined to take down because her abuser never changes and he’s probably still doing it. The Digital follows up on her research after Shepherd approved it. Thus begins the convoluted mess they found as they gained more info. This one is action packed, suspenseful and steamy as Brad and Laura Lee begin a more intimate relationship. I loved how she was able to talk with Joe, the team shrink and finally begins.

Fun Read

This was a really fun story to read. The characters in this story are always so interesting. The stories are always suspenseful and really interesting. The stories always include the characters from precious books in the series. It is nice to be able to see how their characters develop and how relationships develop and/or how new characters are integrated. This has become one of my favorite series. I highly recommend it.

Another great story in the series

There's was obviously a mystery surrounding Laura Lee in the previous books and i wasnt sure I'd want to read it as I wasn't sure about her character. I was wrong, she's a beautifully written female lead and I !loved her journey from solitary army engineer to team member with a HEA in sight.
It's a great story. No spoilers

Operation: Reluctant Angel by Margaret Kay

This book continues the story of Shepherd Security. It is Laura Lee and Brad DuPont’s story. Laura has a hard time interacting with others. She was traumatized as a child and again when she was in college. It is the story of love that can make you brave enough to conquer you worse fears. I eagerly await the next book in the series.

Really good read

This was a really good read as were the rest of the Shepherd Security books. Only issue I found is that Mary Washington University is in Fredricksburg, Va. and not Richmond. Being a native Virgjnian, that discrepancy bothered me a bit. Dis not detract from the story, though. I would definitely recommend this book.

Always a fascinating story from this author

I enjoy the pace and adventure this series brings to life. Laura Lee has her secrets but everything is changing and she needs to open up. Lives depend on it. The strength that she shows is amazing as a female character in the role she has within this specialized group.

Well written. Couldn't put it down. The best one of the series, but then I always think that after I've read one. Just the right touch of romance wrapped through the story line. Love Margaret Kay!!! When does Yvette' story come out?

There's always something going on, constant danger, suspense and danger. Besides the rapes and allegations, you have threats of shooters, snipers and not our people either. The book could have finished with Brad's parents meeting her, but it didn't. HEA.
