Facing up to school bullies on a troubled Brighton estate, a 13-year-old boy arranges a deadly-serious "duel" with airguns - using 18th century style and authenticity. The research he must do in order to set up the fight, then the duel itself and its hideous outcome shed an ultimately brilliant light on the boy's life, friendships, family and future. This is a rites-of-passage story, vividly describing the thrills and fears that thread the dangerous process of growing up in hard times.
