The series continues. This time out with an added little flashback to possibly the world’s most boring arcade game and the only two people in the world who might have enjoyed it.

I don’t always love the long hand of destiny in my stories, but this one is pretty cute, with a starting feature about young Nishikata and Takagi both competing for the high score on an apple picking video game that nobody could apparently love, with two exceptions.

It’s fun because the two never cross paths physically, but are definitely matched up from even earlier than expected. This one also bleeds into the bonus manga, which shows events from a pretty unique perspective and was a really fun addition that I thought was a nice touch.

As for the rest of the chapters, well, it’s pretty much business as usual, although this one is basically all in service to the type of narrative that I much prefer out of the Takagi-san series.

See, we’ve known the outcome of this game for ages, thanks to the flash forwards (to say nothing of the spin-off), so it’s way less will they/won’t they and much more ‘when are they going to just get on with it’.

Thus, we get a lot of Takagi not having the gumption to just be straight with Nishikata and trying to lead him where she wants him with her games and his nonsense and Nishikata being very, very slow to figure out his feelings and even more slow to admit them.

There’s a paper airplane chapter in particular that changes up so much of the typical story structure that it’s a lot of fun, to say nothing of the way that Takagi’s usual demeanour is thrown off by Nishikata for a change.

Another one focuses on Nishikata being a genuinely nice guy and is a little unnecessary, but still appreciated, bit of business about just what Takagi sees in him besides the torment. It’s sweet.

There’s also a very funny wall slam and a playful mocking of who is performing what role in the traditional shojo mould that was a nice addition. There are really no bad stories here, but those stood out especially.

But it’s still the same thing this series has been doing over and over, so that’s a thing. While I would say this series is better, I still prefer the slightly more hormonal When Will Ayumu Make His Move? (although they’re getting closer by the volume) by this mangaka, just because it eschews this sort of pussyfooting around for an entirely different sort instead.

3.5 stars - I think last volume was stronger overall, but this is another good batch of very sweet stories that deserves the rounding up. If you like this series, you won’t be disappointed.

This has been a good volume, I'm kinda in the stage of just sitting back and reading this, there is no real development between Takagi and Nishikata but yet I'm still enjoying the series. I would like to see some development though!
