Balancing Act by Emily March
Lake in the Clouds series #2. Contemporary chick lit, romance. Family oriented. Can be read as a stand-alone. Best read in order since this book continues the timeline after the first.
Multiple POV Genevieve, Noah and Willow, all 3rd person. A wedding in the early part of this book is the couple from the first book.
Genevieve Prentice is settled in Lake in the Clouds, Colorado forging new relationships with her adult children. Willow Eldridge has moved to Lake in the Clouds to rebuild a relationship with her mother. Her focus is also on her troubled young son who has some emotional trauma to work through. Drew befriends a quiet, reclusive man that builds doll house models for training fire fighters. Noah has his own demons and PTSD to deal with, but puppies and a talkative young boy helps to ease his heart just a bit.

Genevieve is struggling to keep something of her own. Not her kids or sister.
Willow is rebuilding her life now in Lake in the Clouds but there is pressure to move back to TN from her in laws. There are more complications that her late husband has left behind.
Noah feels guilty that he survived the fire when his brother did not.
Healing. Living. Connections and family. Healing hearts. Life and complications thrown in. Survive. Adjust and conquer. And love.

Lots going on here. It comes down to family and love. Relationships. Healing.
It feels epic. I know these people. It’s heartwarming and deep. And I hope to revisit Lake in the Clouds again soon.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to keep.

If there is a firefighter in the story, I am all in. This one did not disappoint at all. I loved the romance, and the kids were a plus. This is a must read.

Thak you Net Galley for the ARC.

As a continuation of The Getaway, we now focus on one of the "children". Secrets rule here and influence decisions. Mom (grandma) is sucked in and realizes this as she misses out on travel and adventure. The daughter has been holding onto a secret that will influence her next steps. Once all comes to light, the story resolves and the daughter grows. As always with the author, the interaction of the characters is engaging. Again, while there is no cliffhanger, you are left with the hope that there will be additional books for the other siblings.

Very enjoyable women’s fiction. I jumped into the story and reading as a stand alone before I realized I’ve read the previous (first book) in this series, The Getaway (Sept 2022). Willow Eldridge moves with her two children to Lake in the Clouds, Colorado. Her mother and aunt own and run a guest lodge there. Willow was widowed a couple of years earlier and feels now is the time to reconnect with her mother. While there she meets reclusive neighbor Noah Tannehill. He is recovering from injuries sustained as a firefighter. And some of the injuries are psychological.

The story is an easy to read, low angst and closed door romance. The characters are likable and behave and communicate like adults. Beyond the budding romance of Willow and Noah the story is about mother Genevieve finding balance and passion in her life. Her family is what has defined her and she is looking for what fulfills her beyond being a mother and grandmother. And I love the easy reconnection between mom and daughter and the supportiveness they give each other.

I liked the first book but thought a lot of the time was setting up the series and the adult children of Genevieve as future main characters for their own stories. I found this one more focused and flowed better. I’ll look forward to the next story and a return to Lake in the Clouds. Thank you to Netgalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the ARC and I am leaving an honest review.

I liked the continuing development of the story of Genevieve and her kids.
The focus is in Willow and does she have a lot to unload about her past and marriage. Nosh the recluse is a perfect character to act as a counterweight to Willow’s business.
Genevieve has to figure out where she fits and what she really wants out of life. Helen is her usual ram through the wall at 1000 miles per hour.
It’s a gentle solid story with some surprises but I liked how many of the issues were resolved.
Float on this read for another visit to Lake in the Clouds Colorado.
Thanks to Forever and NetGalley for the early read.

How great to return to Lake in the Clouds. I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book from Net Galley. While I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, I really thought this second book was top notch. I read it nonstop. This is a story about Genevieve's daughter, Willow. I appreciated the mother and daughter struggle and outcome. Also liked the romance between Willow and her neighbor.
I do believe you can do no wrong in reading a book by Emily March. I'm looking forward to the upcoming books in this series.

Genevieve Prentice is trying to find balance with being a Nana/Mama, Sister and just herself. her daughter Willow and two grandkids have moved to Colorado to be closer to her. She's dealing with the death of her husband and his secrets he left behind.
Noah Tannehill is recovering from an accident that happened while firefighting. He's barely living. He meets Drew, Willow's son by chance and it opens something in his heart.
I really enjoyed this book. A little family drama with some closed door romance. This book evoked a lot of emotions. Laughter, happy tears and some sad tears.

Balancing Act was my first time reading anything by this author and it did not disappoint. In this book we follow Willow who has moved to Colorado to be near her mother after her husband died seems like the perfect move. This book had great characters and an amazing plot. If you love reading about small towns or romances then this book is one you need to read. I highly enjoyed reading this and look forward to reading more by this author. Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for this ARC read in exchange of my honest review.

This book hits differently when you are also staring down a milestone birthday. Though mine is a few years lower than Genevieve’s, her feelings of “what’s next” we oh, so relatable. Though I have no desire to run away to New Mexico to draw naked men, in a Maserati no less, I very much enjoyed doing it vicariously. A must read for anyone trying to figure out the next step.

We get Willow's back story and how she moves on. Noah was a great character and her son Drew is a hoot. While being a caring and loving parent, I thought Genevieve was petty and selfish.

Terrific story about family, finding yourself, and overcoming tragedy. This is the second book in the series. I haven't read the first one, but enough backstory was explained to keep me from feeling lost. There are three main characters: Genevieve Prentice, her daughter Willow Eldridge, and their neighbor, Noah Tannehill. Genevieve and her sister, Helen, own a lodge in Lake in the Clouds, Colorado. Willow, widowed two years earlier, moves there with her two children, looking for a fresh start and to reconnect with her mother. She meets the reclusive Noah, a firefighter recovering from injuries received during a tragic incident.

Genevieve has enjoyed her new life in Colorado. After many years as a mom, she has enjoyed traveling, exploring nature, and getting involved in her new community. With her latest project ending and facing a milestone birthday, she feels a bit lost about where her life is heading. When Willow moves to town, Genevieve suddenly finds herself slipping back into family mode, being a mom and Nana on call. She feels she is losing all her progress after her move. I could feel her frustration and fear as she wondered about her future. She received helpful advice from two men, and I enjoyed watching her take that advice. I liked seeing her reconnect with Willow, though there were a few bumps in their road along the way. Her support of Willow is crucial during an unexpected crisis. Her last scene in the book is hilarious and satisfying.

Willow left Nashville hoping to make a better life for her children and reconnect with her mother. During Willow's marriage, they became estranged, and she feels it was mostly her fault. She's ready to come clean about her marriage, her husband, and their life, but talking about it is more challenging than she expects. In the meantime, she steps in as the planner for her brother's upcoming wedding and discovers a possible career path. She also has eight-year-old Drew and four-year-old Emma to take care of. Drew is a pistol with some issues stemming from his father's death, and he keeps Willow on her toes. Drew brings Willow together with Noah in a scene that could have been any parent's nightmare but was the start of a meaningful friendship. I liked seeing the changes and healing that Willow experienced during the book.

Noah moved into his grandfather's house in Lake in the Clouds after experiencing a tragic fire call that left him badly injured. He spends most of his time in his workshop, avoiding people whenever possible. Thanks to Drew, Noah, and Willow are frequently thrown together and soon form a friendship. Noah is surprised to find himself emerging from his shell. I ached for Noah and the trauma he suffered and rooted for him to overcome the demons that haunted him.

I enjoyed watching the relationship between Noah and Willow develop. It started rocky, thanks to Drew's antics, but they soon discovered that their traumatic pasts made it easier to relate to each other. The more time they spent together, the closer they grew, and the more they could share the details of their pasts. I liked how they were able to help each other look at events from a different perspective, enabling them to heal and move forward. There are also some beautiful scenes involving them and the children and the effect on their developing relationship. They each experience an unexpected curveball that must be dealt with before they can look to a future together, but they make it happen with love and support from each other and their friends and families.

Secondary characters such as Gabe Throckmorton and Genevieve's sister Helen add extra interest to the book. I liked Gabe, who is still grieving the loss of his wife but has a growing and changing friendship with Genevieve. I look forward to later books and seeing if that relationship progresses. I loved Helen. She is fun-loving and outspoken, and she loves her family. She and Genevieve have had a great time together over the past two years, and she is understandably hurt when Genevieve appears to no longer have time for her. They must deal with a few growing pains, but in the end, their relationship is stronger than ever. I laughed out loud at Helen's method of getting stop signs for the town.

I loved Balancing Act by Emily March, book two in her Lake in the Clouds series; a story that was heartwarming, emotional, and beautifully weaves the story of Genevieve Prentice and her daughter Willow Eldridge. Set in the picturesque Lake in the Clouds, the story explores the complications and difficulties within family relationships and the challenges of rediscovering love after loss.

Willow, a newly widowed mom with two young children, has followed her Mom to Colorado, ready to swallow her pride and come clean about her life in Nashville. The guilt she feels about her broken relationship with Genevieve is only one layer of the trauma she's struggling with. While there she meets a reclusive neighbor, Noah Tannehill, an irresistible man fighting demons of his own. He is recovering from injuries sustained as a firefighter; some are psychological and/or PTSD. Maybe this sweet town can provide the answers and healing she, her family, and Noah needs; and maybe throw in hope and harmony along the way.

Genevieve and Helen continue navigating the second half of their lives, exploring who they are and what makes them tick. Genevieve struggles with trying to do it all, and not doing it well at all; something many can relate to. She tries to hold on to her new and improved independence while balancing her need to be the mom and grandmother that Willow and her children need, while also being independent as she explores her own life; finding a passion that will fill her well.

Ms. March wrote an amazing story with interesting characters and a sweet romance. It's easy to identify with the topic of PTSD and grief in this story, provoking thoughtfulness and soothing readers who might need comfort in their lives. I highly recommend Balancing Act to other readers and look forward to the next book in this series.

I've been reading this author for almost thirty years, first as historical romance author Geralyn Dawson and more recently as Emily March. Never has she failed to give me a story I could happily immerse myself into. Her current series, as the Eternity Springs books that preceded it, brings all the feelings and I am here for them.

March excels at creating family connections. In this book especially, I love how we see the stories unfold from the perspective of multiple generations. It was easy for me to connect with Genevieve, a widow of a certain age struggling to find her identity now that her children are adults and on their own. But March makes it equally easy to relate to Willow, a young single mother dealing with heavy emotional baggage as well as her young son, an inquisitive chatterbox with more worry than a child should have to shoulder. Add in a reclusive - but very hot - neighbor with plenty of emotional baggage of his own, an undeniable chemistry with Willow, and an endearing soft spot for little kids and puppies, and you have the heart-tugging recipe for romance, family, finding one's place, and happily-ever-afters. Not, however, until all of these characters navigate the unexpected obstacles life has chosen to place in their way.

Those obstacles are one of the things I enjoy about March's writing. Her characters' journeys have real, relatable layers as do the characters themselves. We're only two books into this new series but I'm already wholly invested in them and their well being. I'm eager to watch Genevieve find her footing...and her joy. I'm curious to discover what life has in store for her two remaining single children. And I'm wondering just what role neighboring rancher, Gage will play in it all.

For maximum enjoyment, I strongly recommend reading book one in this series, The Getaway, followed by Balancing Act.

Once again, Emily March produced a book that could tug on my heartstrings and also have me ponder bits and pieces of my own life at the same time.

Set in Lake in the Clouds, Colorado, we join Genevieve's family once again, this time focused on Willow. A return of favorite characters as well from the first in the series, The Getaway, Emily's Lake in the Clouds produces a background of little town life to give a healing time to Willow as well as the potential for unlooked for romance.

When I read this book, I found the balance between the desire Genevieve had to be grandmother and her own self the most interesting part of the story. The romance between Willow and Noah was exactly what I would expect from any book Emily March has written, because it is similar to others in Eternity Springs as well as the Bad Luck series.

Genevieve's struggle of trying to do it all, and not doing it well at all is something that I believe everyone can relate in some way. There are give and take moments in all family situations and the desire to be the mom and grandmother that Willow and her children needed and yet also be the independent, explore her own life woman that moved to Lake in the Clouds originally.

I love the character development of the characters that had a part in this plot, especially as sometimes characters don't progress when they aren't the main focus. I love how Emily wove many of the hints from The Getaway into this one so clearly and yet, allowed the reader to pull on those threads one at a time. I enjoyed Helena's backseat subplot that also was important to the main theme of the book.

Overall, I consider this book one of Emily March's big wins.

Thank you Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for giving me the chance to review the ARC of this book.

Genevieve Prentice is loving her life in Lake in the Clouds. She has made new friends, is close to her sister and is almost finished renovating her cabins. Her project in town, restoring an old theatre, is almost complete as well. She is a little unsure about a big milestone birthday approaching, but everything is still pretty quiet in her life. That is until her daughter Willow shows up and turns Genevieve's life upside down. Not only will Genevieve start to question her own life, she must also work to find a new balance.

Willow is a widowed mother of two and is back home in Lake in the Clouds carrying a huge secret. She knows it time to tell her mom the truth about her marriage, but can she work up the courage? She finds a new friend unexpectedly in a reclusive neighbour whom she has a run in with, and maybe he is just the thing she needs in her life to move on.

As a family wedding approaches, and new secrets are uncovered can Willow and Genevieve find a way to rekindle their close relationship they once had?

Emily March has been a favourite author of mine for a long time. Her series Eternity Springs is what encouraged my love of small town series a long time ago. Balancing Act is the second book in the Lake in the Clouds series, which so happens to be in a town close to Eternity Springs. I loved how the romance in the book was a slow burn, taking a friendship and turning it into a romance, slowly and thoughtfully. I appreciate that in novels which makes it more true to life. The characters were brilliant, and I loved the antics of the children. My thanks to Forever, Grand Central Publishing for my advanced copy which I read and reviewed voluntarily. A beautiful new series by a fabulous author.

So. I’m reading, and the longer I read the more familiar this book seemed. I remember Helen and Genevieve. And Gage the rancher. But not Noah. And kinda-sorta Willow. Then it clicks! I read The Getaway (and liked it a lot!). There’s a certain satisfaction to reconnecting with memories from the characters’ past and feeling that I already know them. That being said, Balancing Act can be satisfying as a stand alone read. I would consider moving to a town like Lake in the Clouds, and I would be happy to have friends like Helen and Genevieve.

The multigenerational concept here works well for me. Mature characters are still trying to find themselves even though they have had successes in relationships and accomplishments. Younger characters are dealing with major issues, too and the two generations are still working out their relationships with each other. Emily March explores how our relationships with family change over time with Genevieve and her children, how overcoming past traumas affects new relationships, how to deal with a short term but complex problem while working out a better long term solution, and how important friends, families, and lovers are to everyone.

Plot highlights. WIlow Eldridge bravely plows forward amid the debris of a marital tornado. Newly widowed, she and her children relocate to be near her mother and aunt. She keeps the pain of the last weeks of her marriage to herself, but is wary of men. Noah Tannehill has moved to his family’s cabin as he rehabilitate injuries acquired fighting the fire in which his brother and friends died. He has survivor’s guilt and no plans to become involved with another person until he figures out his own path forward. Willow has two adorable kids.

“Balancing Act” by Emily March, the second installment in the Lake in the Cloud series, beautifully weaves the story of Genevieve Prentice and her daughter Willow. Set in the picturesque Lake in the Clouds, the novel explores the complexities of family relationships and the challenges of rediscovering love after loss. The author skillfully reintroduces characters from the first book in the series and vividly portrays the tranquil beauty of the area. The book can also be read as a standalone.

Personally, I found the multigenerational aspect engaging, particularly the deeper exploration of Willow’s life and her family’s dynamics. The novel resonates with relatable themes of personal growth and overcoming doubts, as Genevieve and Willow navigate their evolving connection against the backdrop of the scenic surroundings.

The inclusion of older characters adds a delightful layer, portraying their adventurous spirit and the quest for joy in their senior years—an aspect I found personally relatable. Genevieve’s journey mirrors universal struggles, enhancing the book’s appeal.

The well-developed characters, including Drew, a firefighter with a compelling backstory, contribute to the charm of the narrative. The friends-to-lovers romance between Willow and Drew, intertwined with Drew’s growing bond with Willow’s children, adds a heartwarming touch to the story.

In conclusion, “Balancing Act” is a delightful read with interesting characters and a sweet romance. The author’s skillful storytelling leaves me eagerly anticipating the third book in the series.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher but the thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.

Family at a crossroads…

Genevieve and her family are back! I was happy to jump back into Lake in the Clouds and catch up with the Prentice family goings on. Four grown siblings stumbling through life as we all do, supported by a loving mother and pistol of an aunt, there was always something percolating…
Willow and her young family are settling into the resort even as plans for the future are still uncertain. It’s been over a year since her husband died, and we’re finding out exactly what happened with Willow’s marriage and how it affected all her relationships. Complicated, complicated and the past was going to rear its head again…

Noah Tannehill was their neighbour but he kept to himself, filling his days in the workshop and living with his own regrets. Together they made an interesting pair as misgivings collided with good, old-fashioned chemistry…

This had the same pacing and tone as the first book which made for another easy-going, meandering read. It takes a while to get to the point at times but when you get there it was well worth the wait. The drama was not as explosive as the first instalment in this series (which I highly recommend you read first) but when there is family – people! – you know fireworks will follow. This will be added to the ‘picker-upper’ shelf, when I want something easy to read but with heart at the center and enough kick to make it oh so interesting… Can’t wait for more!

*I happily reviewed this story

In Balancing Act, Emily March takes us back to charming Lake in the Clouds, Colorado and its charming cast of characters. We revisit Genevieve and Helen as they continue to navigate the second half of their lives, exploring who they are and what makes them tick. Genevieve struggles to hold onto her new and improved independence while balancing her desire to rebuild her relationship with her daughter, Willow. She also holds onto her determination not to backslide into being at the beck and call of her adult children and their dramas. How can she juggle being a helpful parent and still find her true, sustaining passion in life?

Willow, newly widowed mom with two young children, has followed her Mom to Colorado, ready to swallow her pride and come clean about her life in Nashville. The guilt she feels about her broken relationship with Genevieve is only one layer of trauma she's struggling with. Wouldn't you know she had to meet an irresistible man fighting demons of his own?

Maybe this sweet little town can still provide the answers and healing her little family needs. And just maybe it will throw in hope and harmony along the way.

Emily March has deftly drawn in her readers with her interesting characters and thoughtful plotline again. It's easy to identify with the topic of PTSD and grief in this story, provoking thoughtfulness and soothing readers who might need comfort in their lives.

Balancing Act
Emily March
November 28, 2023

Genevieve Prentice has been in Colorado with her sister, Helen at Lake in the Woods for time enough to get cabins ready and rented. They have taken trips together, partied and worked hard as well. Genevieve’s daughter Willow has struggled throughout her marriage. Just as she had decided to divorce her husband, Andrew for cheating on her, he died in a car accident. Their son, Drew was in the car with him, He did survive but recovery was difficult. Since then he has a habit of losing his attention and creating an accident. Consequently he has an injury - some minor, some more severe. Willow decided it was time to sell the house, pack up and move to Colorado. In Texas she had very little support. With her mom and Auntie Helen perhaps her children will develop a secure and safe family relationship.
Balancing Act will be published by Forever of Hachette Publishing on November 28, 2023. I was able to read and review March’s latest Lake in the Clouds novel via NetGalley. I have enjoyed reading the Eternity Springs novels and now the continuation of many characters evolving into Lake in the Clouds. It is a fun and family oriented series that gives us a taste of the Prentice clan. Balancing Act is a spirited story of Willow and her children making a home and finding new roots in Lake of the Clouds. Very enjoyable!
