Rate this book
Sometimes it's unclear who deserves a favor...Despite her life-changing injury, Dee Rommel is as determined and scrappy as ever. Still adjusting to her new life working for her godfather, private investigator Gordy Greer, Dee is ready to try out her hi-tech running blade, returning to the annual 10K competition.

A mysterious car crashes and burns in the middle of Portland, Maine’s Casco Bay Bridge. A young, once-sex-trafficked woman is killed and Dee finds herself protecting orphaned Yuusuf, a high school valedictorian who may be able to point to the murderer.

When a toxic web of crime is revealed, both traditional and extended family dynamics are in play, as well as greed and ambition. Old relationships haunt Dee when nothing or no one is as they seem. She has only 8 days to keep her pursuit of justice in play, fighting for her allies and her own life.

Jule Selbo does it again in "8 Days," her third book in her Dee Rommel detective series. With Ms. Selbo's smart prose, you fall in love w/ Dee Rommel all over again as she uncovers a dark teen exploitation racket while investigating the murder of a young woman. Fast-paced and gritty, I couldn't put it down. *****

Jule Selbo, the author of 8 Days, has created an intricate mystery with multiple, complex characters, and a mosaic of plots that have to be tied together “in eight days.” A herculean task at best. Selbo passes the test with flying colors.
Her stalwart protagonist, Dee Rommel, was in her first year on the police force when a horrific, on the job accident took her leg, but not her drive or resolve. She left the force and has been working as a private investigator at her godfather’s company in Portland, Maine.
Dee has just finished her first 10k run with a new prosthetic when she’s brought onto a case involving the brutal murder of a young woman. As her investigation develops, she finds herself pulled into the dark world of sex trafficking. Selbo’s characters are nuanced, and her story unfolds seamlessly, making it hard to put the book down.
Dee’s life, already filled with major stress, gets more complicated when an old boyfriend shows up on his Harley. At the same time, a detective Dee worked with on the force lets her know, in not-too-subtle ways, that he also has feelings for her and is ready to rekindle their brief relationship.
I found myself shouting out loud at Dee Rommel midway through the book when I thought she was about to do something foolish. Well, she didn’t. And that was one of many great plot twists, and showed how engaged I was with the character and the story.
Jule Selbo’s 8 Days is the third book in the Dee Rommel Mysteries, and this is a protagonist I will happily revisit as the series continues.

This is an excellent PI mystery/police procedural with wonderful, relatable characters, plenty of action, and unexpected twists and turns. I especially liked the character of Dee, our intrepid investigator. She doesn't allow her disability to slow her down, nor does she look for special treatment because of it. She seems to be coming to terms with it and expects others to do the same.

Ms. Selbo's writing style was engaging and held my interest for the entire story. Even more, she surprised me with the identity of one particular "bad guy". That always impresses me, because as much as I read mysteries and thrillers I can sometimes figure them out ahead of time. An author who keeps me in the dark is a good thing. This is the first book by Ms. Selbo I have read but it won't be the last. I highly recommend her writing.

I received a review copy from the author via BookSirens and this is my honest opinion.

Dee Rommel faces her most challenging and disturbing case yet as she becomes enmeshed in a world of child sex trafficking that challenges her mental and physical toughness. The baddies are the worst of the worst and Dee and her colorful cast of supporting characters are tested at every turn. The plot twists through the gritty streets of the greater Portland area and showcase an underbelly of sinister proportions. This mystery will grab you firmly in its embrace and not let go until you reach the final page. Highly recommended.
