Omega's Choice

Rate this book
There's a reason I'm known in the pack as the untouchable omega—the longest-standing unmated omega, the only one in our pack's history to be in their fourth year of the annual chase. The only omega who hasn't been caught during the hunt.

Nobody knows I have an ace up my sleeve, a secret place I go to during each year's mating ritual. However, this place is forbidden; it's on enemy land. Despite my father's warning to never step on Blackclaw territory, I don't heed his words.

Little did I know that someone knew about my hideout; a big, bad wolf who had been watching me, hiding behind the bushes, observing my every move.

A dangerous wolf who wants to claim me and make me his mate, and for some reason, he makes my wolf react so… shamelessly.

This novella is a steamy MM Shifter Omegaverse story. Expect a rebellious omega and a powerful alpha who is unable to resist his charm.

Short and smutty, shifter omegaverse novella.

Wouldn’t mind reading a full-length novel of Rafe and Cody — as is, it was fun but nothing special.
Bonus points for the cover.

Question, is it primal play if they’re shifters? 🤔

Tropes and NSFW info (spoilers):
- Alpha x omega
- Strict top/bottom (one scene)
- Only Cody’s POV
- Pack enemies
- Fated mates

This book was incredibly rapey. Cody thought: "I was certain, in that moment, that I was going to die." He even told Rafe: "Obvious?! I thought I was about to die today! I thought we were about to start another Pack war!" These were obviously the best circumstances for sex, so sex was had. Cody told Rafe "no" and shook his head when Rafe wanted to suck his dick. I don't know how much clearer Cody could have been that he did not consent to this action. Rafe proceeded anyway.

When Rafe and Cody came back to Cody's home, Cody's father asked: "Did he rape you?" This is pretty rich, coming from a guy who forces all omegas in his pack to participate in a hunt where omegas are forced to submit to the first alpha who catches them. Obviously, it was only okay for Cody to be raped by members of his own pack, not by enemies.

Rafe had been watching Cody for four years, and had been waiting for the right moment to mate him the whole time. Four years ago, Cody was only sixteen years old. There is no reason at all to add that extra layer of underage people being forced to participate in the hunt if the hunt wasn't going to be condemned anyway. It just made Rafe seem more creepy and gross.

Then there are the little things, like slut-shaming (because only 'cheap whores' can have the desire to be taken), the division between the 'good' and the 'bad' pack (where the 'good' pack was the one with the annual rape hunt and the 'bad' pack was the one whose territory had been taken by other packs), and the generally confusing worldbuilding.

Really, the only thing the book had going for it was that Rafe said Cody got to decide how many babies they would have.

I just can't recommend this book.

Hello everyone, I'm Mr. C Reviewer, and tonight we're discussing (She/Her) Gen Blackwell's book, Omega's Choice. Which is my first experience with her work and after reading this one I'm be eager to explore more of her books.

I'd like to extend a huge thank you to booksirens for providing a copy of 'Omega's Choice' as an E-ARC in exchange for an optional honest review.

The book is set to be Published December 1st, 2023. The narrative, told using first person perspective following Cody which spans 8 chapters and epilogue having 78 pages.

Summary: In the pack, I am known as the untouchable omega—the longest-standing unmated omega in our pack’s history, the only one to have evaded capture during the annual chase for four consecutive years. Little do they know, I have a secret hideout, a forbidden place on enemy territory where I seek refuge during the mating ritual. Despite my father’s warnings, I venture into Blackclaw territory, unaware that someone has been watching me from the shadows. A dangerous wolf, determined to claim me as his mate, lurks in the darkness, igniting an unexpected reaction within my wolf.

Review:
-In my opinion, the writing in this book was exceptional, and the plot shows great potential. However, I believe it could have been even better if it were developed into a full-length novel. The story was easy to follow, and the world-building was well done. I particularly enjoyed the exploration of the characters in their human and shifter wolf forms, as well as the depiction of the territories. I thoroughly enjoyed the unique twist of this being a shifter wolf story rather than a non-shifter one. Having read several wolf stories in the past, I found myself drawn to the allure of the shifter wolf narrative. The transformation process and the way it is depicted, often set in the great outdoors amidst nature, added an extra layer of fascination to the story for me.

The book was a captivating read, with richly detailed settings and characters that come to life on the pages. I particularly appreciated how the story immediately delves into the rules of the hunt, setting the stage for an enthralling adventure from the very beginning. The narrative unfolds over the course of a few hours, maintaining a sense of urgency and tension throughout, with no superfluous or unnecessary moments. This focused approach keeps the story engaging and ensures that every scene serves a purpose, propelling the plot forward and keeping readers thoroughly engrossed.

-I liked that Cody’s journey is one of defiance against societal norms and expectations, as he breaks the rules to carve out his own path towards happiness, fate, and love. The message conveyed is powerful and thought-provoking, as it delves into the complexities of choice and destiny.

-When I first encounter Rafe, there is a sense of apprehension, but as the story unfolds, he evolved into a likable and genuine individual. His portrayal as a good-natured person adds an endearing quality to the narrative. The dynamic between Rafe and Cody was compelling, and their journey towards unity as fated mates I found was engaging and heart-warming.

The storyline involving Rafe and Cody is particularly captivating, drawing me into their world and the challenges they face. The concept of fated mates adds an intriguing layer to their relationship, making it a delightful theme to explore within the story. The seamless manner in which their stories intertwine created a sense of anticipation and satisfaction for me as a reader.

-As the story nears its conclusion, I found myself grappling with a palpable reluctance to bid farewell to the characters and their world. The yearning to delve deeper into the intricacies of the packs and to uncover more about the characters is a testament to the author’s adeptness in crafting an immersive setting. My enthusiasm to further explore this world through additional books speaks volumes about the captivating nature of the story. However, I couldn’t help but feel that Cody’s family gave in way too easily at the end, in my opinion. More tension would have made this more “believable”; it did feel forced as well as rushed. Considering the increasing popularity and accessibility of audiobooks, I do think that it is appropriate for this book to have an audio edition. I rate each story I read out of 10, and for this one, I give it a 6.5 Remember this was what I thought about the book personally and I suggest that you give it a go for yourself.

this was much less sexy and fun than i thought it was gonna be when i read the summary…..honestly a bit of a borefest….the writing and dialogue was a sorta underwhelming and in some cases cringe….i mean it’s a short novella so i wasn’t expecting there to be much buildup between the mmcs, but there was even less than expected and not very convincing……nothing that really excited me…..could’ve been executed much better imo

3,5/5 🌟

This was a short, easy read. I think the writing is well and the plot has a lot of potential. It could’ve been better as a long length novel. I did still like the book but I think plot could’ve worked better if it was longer. The potential of dynamic between Cody and Rafe was really good and even though it does feel too fast it didn’t bother me much.
Cody’s pack still has backwards mating rituals and I think not exactly obeying its rules and Cody making his own destiny was a good spin in an omegaverse story. Strict gender rules and weird modern sexism kind of romance in omegaverse stories always puts me off so it not being exactly that made it a fun read.
If you are into omegaverse and looking for an easy, quick read go for it, you won’t regret.
Thanks to Booksirens for a copy of this book!

I was in the mood for a super quick, sexy, fun read. Saw this book was on a freebie so picked it up and it was great for my mood! I got into the story right away. It all takes place in one day besides a short epilogue but I was into it right from the beginning.

It is a single POV told from omega Cody’s POV. I would have loved to see Alpha Rafe’s POV as well but understand since it’s a short story. I really liked how they were both drawn to each other and how Rafe always let Cody give his consent. There wasn’t a thing he did between claiming, marking whatever that he didn’t wait for Cody to say yes to!

If you’re looking for a short story to cleanse your palette with some spice I would recommend!

Short & sweet . . . and a little dirty.

Cody doesn’t want to take part in his pack’s yearly “mating ritual” where Alphas catch and mate with omegas. He wants a say in his destiny. He’s found a hiding place but it’s in a rival pack’s land.

Rafe is the Alpha of the rival pack and has his eye in Cody.

It’s a short read so I don’t want to give too much away. A good read for those who like sweet shifter stories.

It was surprisingly a very sweet story, with its share of heat, of course. I hadn't read an omegaverse story in forever, so it was a perfect one to get back to the genre.
I loved how respectful Rafe, the alpha, was. Consent is sexy, and it's not so often we get it fully in werewolf series. Having a feisty omega was fun. Cody wanted to be the master of his destiny, and he reached his goal. Overall, it was a nicely wrapped light omegaverse story I'd definitely recommend.

Omega’s Choice by Gen Blackwell was a quick and quite enjoyable read. Cody, an omega prince, has been cheating during the annual mating run to avoid mating an alpha that he has not chosen. He has been hiding on a rival pack’s land even though it is quite clearly against the rules and treaty. Rafe, the new Blackclaw alpha, has known about Cody’s hiding place for four years and plans to claim him this year.

For being so short, Gen was able to really give me a relationship that felt developed. Cody and Rafe were a hot couple and Rafe’s reasons for waiting to claim Cody were quite clear. I loved how he and his men let Cody think he had the advantage when it was clearly Rafe who was in charge. I also love how he let Cody chose his own destiny/fate because he realized how important it was to Cody to be in control of his own future. I really hope that we will see more of this pack and couple.

"How long could I keep this up before my father reached his breaking point"

This was a great book by a new to me author, Gen Blackwell. When I saw this ARC available on BookSirens, the book blurb was enticing enough to get me to pick it to read/review. The book was short and could definitely have been twice as long or even longer. I loved the storyline and I would enjoy seeing more books set in this world.

This would make the perfect prequel to a new series, hint hint!

Very sweet & quick read. Cody’s pack has some outdated ideas about how omegas should be chosen to mate with alphas/betas and chooses to hide on an enemy pack land for 4 years during their annual hunt. He returns to this spot every few days over these years as the spot and scents soothe him. This year, however everything is going to change for Cody.

The pacing for this story was great, not too slow or fast which sometimes happens with novellas. I really liked all the secret reveals after Cody and Rafe meet, it made everything special. If this was a full length novel I would absolutely read this!.

Ended too soon.

Omega's Choice had a good premise. It started off promising. Gave background info as to why Cody was still an unmated omega, and why he was once again going to be in the woods trespassing on enemy pack land. Maybe a little too much background for a story so short. Especially since there was only one POV.
However, just as it got to the point, the book ended. I would have liked more background into the alpha, Rafe.

To put it simply: it was a short story and very cute.

Cody's pack celebrates each year's mating hunt for all members to find their mates. The race consists of the omegas running into the forest and an hour later the veins and alphas come out behind them, the omega who is "caught" must surrender and accept to be the mate of the one who has caught him.

This concept is not something Cody is going to accept, since according to his pack's traditions the omegas do not have right to choose for themselves or refuse to accept as a mate whoever catches them, which is why for the last four years he has avoided being caught.

How? Hiding in the territory of the neighboring pack. The problem is that this pack has been at war with Cody's pack and if the omega is caught trespassing...Bad things will happen, maybe...

I really liked the story. And the fact that Cody stood firm in his convictions, but best of all, was that Rafe respected Cody's opinions and waited patiently for Cody to choose him and not the other way around.

Something I didn't like very much was that it's very short! I wanted a little more development in their relationship and how the packs learn to live together in peace after years of conflict.

That aside, I enjoyed the book.

DNF @ 40%.

And I’m just realizing that 40% in, almost nothing has happened. Anyway…

Cody has his brilliant evasive maneuver he executes every year to evade an unwanted mating… by sneaking into enemy territory which could spark a war of caught. No big deal, right? And of course, while hiding in enemy territory, he dozes off. And after he is caught, Cody is all I had been so careful. I’m sorry, were we experiencing the same story, Cody? In what world was anything you did careful?

Then there is Cody’s illogical distaste when Joe of the enemy wolves refers to the Oak Crest pack as “Crestians”.

Crestians. It was honestly kind of an ugly word. I resented it almost immediately.

Wut? Though, TBF, he is TSTL, so I guess that pans out.

Then you have Caleb. Because one ‘C’ name wasn’t enough for this 70 page book.

But honestly, for 70 pages, the ball needed to get rolling a little bit faster for me to think the story and ending could in any way be satisfying. That, paired with the “I’m not like another omegas” vibes (yeah, cause the other omegas are ready to start a war over mating… are there not non-enemy territories you could hide in, ffs?), really just isn’t leaving me wanting more.

In this omegaverse, omegas have little choice in mating and their only worth is their ability to bear children/pups. Cody, the son of the Oak Crest pack Alpha doesn't except this. And has come up with a foolproof way to avoid being claimed at the pack's yearly mating run. Rafe, the Blackclaw pack Alpha, puts a wrench in Cody's plan.

Roughly a quarter of this short story is the actual mating between Cody and Rafe. Their chemistry is primal and intense. Enemies to lovers, virgin mate, and fated mates are the tropes used. But as the title states, this story is about choice. It features a brave Omega and an Alpha who is strong enough to give him the choice in accepting or refusing a mating.

At 78 pages, it's a quick read. Rebellious Cody is a strongminded and extremely likable character. Rafe is less well written, but is kind and definitely has a sense of humor when his mate pulls a knife on him.

I wish this story was longer. Not enough time in the book to do more than a bit of worldbuilding. I could see this easily expanded to be a dual POV book. Or a series, with Beta Caleb finding his mate.

A new author for me with an enjoyable writing style. I would like to see more.

This is a short story. Cody is an omega who has not been caught, claimed and mated in the last 4 years of the mating ritual. He doesn’t want to be claimed. He wants to choose his own mate. He is the son of the alpha of their pack. He found a secret place to hide. Unfortunately, it is off-limits and forbidden because it is Blackclaw territory, their rival pack. This year doesn’t go quite as well for Cody…or does it??? He runs into trouble, being found by the rival pack including mesmerizing alpha Rafe. It was a nice story filled with tension as the rivals meet and have to “figure things out”. I liked the story but it was quite short. A longer novel would allow me to enjoy the back and forth between Cody and Rafe more. I received an ARC copy from the author and this is my honest review.

This was my safe place. My little piece of heaven tucked away from reality. Time to wait out yet another annual hunt.

This was a short but sweet shifter read, that gave a surprising depth by the end of it. For the most part, it felt basic - enemy packs, fated mates, classic shifter spice. But I did like some nuances, like how and how they solved the 'enemy' part of their enemies-to-lovers trope.

As an omega, I had come to realize that we were born with an inherent disadvantage, burdened by our nature. We were labeled as mere breeders, leaving us with limited choices and little control. If we desired any semblance of autonomy, we had to seize what we could.

In the end, this was a nice little push for omega independence too. Say it again for the omegas in the back, Cody! ;)

*Arc review* 3.5 stars!!

This was my first omegaverse book and first time reading anything by this author! It was very short and fast paced, everything straight to the point but I would’ve liked more story development and less “insta-love”. The writing itself was great!! It had me hooked from the very beginning and if there’s a follow up story I would definitely be interested. I could relate to Cody a bit with him not exactly wanting to be submissive for just anyone, but then enjoying the feeling once he met Rafe. But for someone who is considered an Alpha I thought Rafe was a bit too soft, albeit their dynamic was great it just didn’t seem very alpha of him.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Omega’s Choice is a short and spicy novella that was a joy to read. It is a single POV story about an intrepid, proud omega named Cody who finds his perfect mate. Though short, the story was compelling and complete. Cody’s arc, which primarily takes place during a single evening, had no spare or unnecessary moments. From the mating ritual hunt, to the discovery and beyond, each event led to the culminating moment where he recognized and accepted his mate. Cody and Rafe are perfectly matched, and though I would love to read about their future together, I am satisfied with the conclusion of their story. I will definitely read this author’s work again.

To avoid being caught in the yearly mate finding hunt, Cody has been hiding behind enemy lines at a place where he feels more at home than his own actual home. Cody doesn't know that he has been watched by Rafe who is the alpha of the enemy pack. I enjoyed the book and seeing how Rafe and Cody find their happy ever after. However, when Rafe's second in command catches Cody at the "secret place", there is a bit of flirtation going on which for me doesn't make sense seeing as Rafe's second in command probably knows how Rafe feels about about Cody, and so I would think he wouldn't start flirting with him. Other than that, I really enjoyed the characters. Rafe is kind of alpha I enjoy reading about. Dominant but still gives space for others to make a choice. No wonder Cody fell hard ;).

Short & sweet. Cody is the Omega son of the pack Alpha. Every year the pack has an annual Omega Chase. This is where Alphas can chase Omegas & once caught mate them. Every year Cody will run & hide till the chase is over because he wants an Alpha by choice, not by claiming. Cody is in his hiding spot & is confronted by a rival pack. He comes face to face with Rafe the Alpha of the rival pack. His body goes haywire & his inner wolf is screaming "mate". What choice? It was made clear several times, that no matter the circumstance, the omega had no agency and was at the mercy of all the alphas. Thought this would be exciting but it wasn't. Completely predictable.
