The Ones #2

The Ones We Hate

Rate this book
Piper Hartrick has only ever openly despised one person. For every smile she conjures up, he balances the energy with a frown. With every careful step she makes into ownership of her family’s design business, he makes his own moves by bulldozing his way into a room. When an unexpected turn of events has him practically begging for her help, she finds that she might enjoy the way he looks on his knees a little too much to not consider his offer.

Leo Diaz is confident. He doesn’t bother with wasted niceties when his dreams of becoming a movie director have never called for a meek and docile type. His studies have given him the unique ability to judge someone’s acting, so he can’t help but notice the biggest faker of them all. She smiles at the drop of a hat and expects the world to shine a spotlight on her. Unfortunately, when his shot at directing Fletcher University’s musical hinges on finding the perfect good girl character, he knows exactly who fits the part.

Katie grew up in Southern Oregon surrounded by never-ending trees, trails, and water sources. In addition to getting serotonin from the outdoors and well-organized spreadsheets, she has always been drawn to the art of storytelling. Her family knows her as someone who can successfully make people cry with a well-written birthday card. Reading captivated and sucked her in from a young age and eventually, the endless stories she fabricated in her head became too much of a hyper fixation to not write down on paper. Although her romance novels are often sexy and comedic, they also focus heavily on mental health and self-worth. Ultimately, her goal is to use the human condition to connect to the heart of readers and she makes no exception with her debut novel, The Ones We Fight For.

I'm the author, so take this with a grain of salt, but I'm obsessed with them. I did write my own issues and personality into the characters again though, so if you didn't like the last one, it's safe to say you won't enjoy this novel (or me) either. I also still write in 3rd person *gasp* the HORROR. But if you were like DEAR GOD JUST DO IT ALREADY about the slow burn in book 1, you’re in luck because Piper and Leo, quite frankly, have no self-control.

Anyway, I hope you all love my smiling sunshine, people-pleaser girl with underlying female rage, and my grumpy, commanding boy with a submissive streak.

4.5 stars.

This was a beautiful book and dealt with grief so well. I thought the mental health representation was FIRE.

Piper dealt with her parent's death by hiding her pain and "negative" emotions behind smiles and kindness and not asking for too much. Leo sees her and hates that she hides. This sets up some real antagonism.

Now, the author could have taken the pretty good way out and helped Piper stop hiding and pretending to be happy, but she doesn't. She let's Piper own her coping mechanism and Leo to be humbled. Sometimes he's right, but that doesn't make it right for him to force his way on others.

I applaud you, author! Bravo for making this complex and beautiful.

I love my enemies to lovers and enemies with benefits and this book was GREAT. The two main characters spark against each other so well and you really feel it when they cannot keep away from each other and when they fall in love.

The book is VERY sex-forward and seemed to use physical intimacy to show the growth in their relationship and stand in as every part of their development, which is why I marked it down a little. The amount of sex talk with EVERYONE in their lives was bizarre. Maybe there are families like theirs, but I could not understand having open conversations about their (and their families') sex lives so openly... but, like I said, it's almost like sex is a short cut for talking about feelings and emotions.

I loved this book a lot and this author is currently a safe one for me. I love how she deals with consent, mental health, grief, growth... and the spicy is spicing.

The other thing that just didn't feel right is how young they are. Maybe I'm just jealous, but I was no where near having the kind of emotional growth these two had at their age.

Safety deets
- GREAT consent.
- Both have slept around with other people quite a bit and dated while they knew the other. The main characters have known each other since high school and been antagonistic towards each other.
- condom used the first time and then discussed shortly and not used later.
- We get to see them start their HEA in the epilogue... and it's all happy and tidy. Maybe a little too tied up for the timeframe and them being so young, but it was still fun and sweet.

Wow, I loved this book so much! It was funny and spicy, but also had emotional depth and major character growth. I am obsessed with Leo and how he tries, even when he claims to hate her, to help Piper gain confidence and be unapologetic in all her feelings, not just the positive ones. He also helps her cope through dealing with anxiety. Also, princesa is one of my favorite new book boyfriend nicknames!

I related to Piper in many ways, which made me even more invested in her journey. The author writes a rich cast of side characters who add so much to the story. I ran to order a copy of the author’s first book after finishing this, and I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

Read this is you love: enemies to lovers, he falls first, grumpy & sunshine, college romance, mental health rep, poverty rep, spicy scenes, witty banter, theater & music

I loved this book so much! Piper and Leo were so fiery, I loved their push and pull dynamic. I love katie's portrayal of grief because it feels so real and relatable. The talia & walker crumbs made me so happy too. This was such an amazing love story about taking chances and opening up to love all while being so funny and sexy too. I cant wait for colin & scarletts book because second chance romance is my weakness.

✨ The Ones We Hate by Katie Golightly ✨

🩰 Enemies to Lovers
🎥 Spanish dialogue & thoughts — 😍
🩰 Music, movies, arts, oh my!
🎥 Spicy High School Musical Vibes
🩰 Piper (period. she’s a badass)

If 10 Things I Hate About You was crossed with High School Musical and a few chili peppers thrown in for good measure, you would have Katie’s second book.

I really, really liked The Ones We Fight For. It was intense, relatable, and hard. I absolutely fuc*ing love The Ones We Hate. The idea of loss and grief constantly resurfacing, finding love in unexpected places, and following dreams to be close to those you love — god. It’s beautiful.

I’m not a crier in texts, like at all, but I came close to tearing up at various points. There’s some heart wrenching, sad, wonderful moments throughout the novel. And for anyone who says anything about the length of the read, it’s exactly how long it needs to be for it not to be rushed. You can’t rush love. You can’t rush acceptance. YOU CAN’T RUSH GRIEF. Period.

I love how much complexity and development we see in both Piper and Leo (and honestly, Thea and crew as well.) Thea is hardcore the friend I hope to be in all friendships — and I get Katie’s opening commentary on friends because of Thea.

Piper: Badass.
Leo: Hardass.
Harden: Dumbass.
These seem fitting enough to not warrant further explanation. 😅

What I love most about this book?
Feel your feelings. Always. 💕

Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5

CW: YES. Read with care. Katie doesn’t shy away from reality. It’s what I love about her writing.

The way Katie writes her stories makes them so hard to put down. The Ones We Hate is full love laughter, love, HEARTBREAK, and everything that makes the perfect, heart-wrenching romance novel. She shatters you and picks up the pieces by the end.

This book had me laughing, it had me stressed and it made me FEEL and it was all perfect. I can’t wait for the next story in this series and see what heartbreak Katie has in store for us next.

Also, the shower scene will forever be in my mind. It’s not leaving any time soon. 🔥

Crying at the author’s note is a new record for me, and right from that moment, I knew I was in for a ride. After diving into Katie’s first book a couple of weeks back and having my emotions all over the place, I wasn’t surprised she had me feeling all sorts of ways again.

The dynamic between Piper and Leo is spot on. They start off hating each other, but as the story unfolds, they grow and evolve, understanding each other’s backgrounds and what shapes them into who they are today. It’s mutual journey of growth and learning from one another. This story had me laughing out loud just as much as it had me in tears. Piper, my girl, is so relatable! The people pleaser and klutz in me felt so seen, but also her experience with grief really hit me in the heart. The details depicted in the small moments were so touching.

And let’s talk about the friendships and family dynamics portrayed in this book, pure perfection. The way these characters show up for each other without hesitation was just what my soul needed, and the family dynamics, which were already great in the first book, are even better here. I loved the introduction of Leo’s family and the way they spoke in Spanish is small bits throughout the story. Also, seeing familiar faces from the previous book was such a treat, I’m excited to see these characters more as the series progresses.

I really appreciate Katie’s writing style and how she balances emotional depth with spicy scenes. And let me tell you, there’s a heavy part in this book that had me in tears for a good chunk, and after that I was a complete mess.

I highly recommend checking out this series, but make sure to read the trigger warnings and take care of yourself.

Thank you, Katie, for letting me read this in advance. Your writing is absolutely wonderful, and while it broke my heart, it also healed me in so many ways. And for the record, your first book was definitely not a fluke. No pressure at all, I will patiently wait for the next one. 💙

“To the good girls who hide behind a smile and the people who see right through them.”

I knew going into this book, Katie was going to break me. And she definitely delivered. Following THE ONES WE FIGHT FOR, I knew that Piper’s story would be so emotional, and this was a wonderfully written story about grief, growth, and love.

Piper is now in her senior year of college, looking forward to graduating and taking over her family’s design business. But she is still struggling with the loss of her parents. Her coping strategy is to make herself as agreeable as possible, no matter the cost.

Leo has known Piper since high school and they’ve never gotten along. Leo is frustrated with Piper’s agreeable disposition and thinks it’s all an act. They disagree and fight constantly, but Leo needs Piper’s help in the musical he is producing, and they find themselves stuck together again and again.

Piper and Leo push each other a lot throughout the book. Leo helps Piper learn that it’s okay to feel and take up space. Piper teaches Leo that the world isn’t quite so black and white. They force honest conversations with each other, and support each other in so many important ways. Watching them break down each other’s walls and form a strong, loyal relationship.

Katie writes their love story so beautifully. She writes our perfectly imperfect cast so well. Her stories are always romance-centric, but there are a lot of other wonderful elements to her writing that make you feel loved and healed.

The spice was spicin’ in the most delicious way throughout the book. The tension between Piper and Leo is palpable - and when it finally breaks 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

Do yourself a favor and pick up this book!

I loved this book so much. I loved the first chapter, with the glimpse into Piper's past and that memory with her parents. That scene was sweet but sad since we know that Cole and Paisley die in the future. It was entertaining how much Leo and Piper fought and acted like they hated each other. The hotel scene was definitely hot and to me it was the turning point for them to stop their fighting. I did not expect that scene to play out the way it did and it was great. I loved how Leo encouraged Piper to "take up space" and to not be afraid to ask for what she wanted. This book was amazing and I loved it. I can't wait for the rest of the series to be written too, and I look forward to reading all their stories. Thank you to Katie Golightly for the advanced copy.

“I’m in love with you, princesa. Te amo. I’ve been in love with you for a long time. Before you told me you didn’t want love. And I lied. I’m sorry. I didn’t want to fall for you, I really didn’t. Then I tried to fall out of love with you, but I couldn’t. When you smile, and I mean really smile, I understand every love song in Guys and Dolls. Every book that Sam reads. Why my parents dance and your parents danced, too. Every romance movie I watched as a kid could never adequately explain the way I feel about you. When I’m with you, I have this overwhelming urge to create something—a movie, a play, anything—that will explain it. It’s not just romance movies, it’s that plot twist that makes a viewer gasp or the way everyone reacted when the fight scene happened on stage last night. I feel harder and deeper when I’m with you. Sometimes it fucking hurts, like in the orchestra pit. Sometimes it feels like joy, the way last night felt after the performance, when I couldn’t stop touching you. You’re… you’re my plot twist, Piper.”

“I know this isn’t what you wanted, but I can’t separate sex and emotions. Not with you. I never could with you. I tried, Piper, I did, but I’ve been falling for you since you tipped that glass of ice over my head. Maybe even before then. I lived to argue with you. I craved the way you told me exactly what you thought of me and how right you were about my flaws. I’m always desperate to know what you’re thinking. And then when I kissed you in the library, I couldn’t handle that I didn’t have more of you. I couldn’t handle you smiling for everyone else but me, so I took what I could have. And now that’s not enough of you, either. I don’t just want pieces of you, princesa. I want to be the one you can’t stop thinking about, too. And yes, there are better guys out there for you than me—like Elliot, maybe—but I want it to be me. I know you think I’m an asshole, but I’m an asshole who can’t stop imagining what it would be like to love you forever, and it’s torturing me to not have your heart when you’ve had mine for months. I don’t think I can keep holding you at night if I’m not allowed to love you all day.”

“You make me want to be a better person. You’re thoughtful and hardworking and charming and annoying. And I love every part of you. I love you, too, Leo.”

“I want what my parents had. And I think, with you, I can have it.”
“You can have it with me.”

“I love you. I’m never going to stop loving you. When I think about the future, you’re always there, pissing me off or smiling at me. It is shocking how wrong I was about you. I used to think you made me weak, but you’re not my weakness at all, princesa. You’re my greatest strength. You call me on my shit and take it when I call you on yours. You are my person. The one I want to annoy with my movie commentary forever. The one I could listen to tell me the difference between eight shades of the same color green forever.”

I received an advanced copy to review from the author, and all thoughts are my own.

The Ones We Fight For drew me in with the big family, guardianship, grief, and slow burn, so I knew that I wanted to read The Ones We Hate, focusing on Piper, one of the “kids” (now 21) from the first story and her archnemesis, Leonardo Diaz. They’ve known each other since high school and have both hated each other – Leo thinks Piper is “too perfect,” and Piper thinks Leo is “too full of himself.” Leo is the student director for the theater department’s musical, and he needs a new Sarah Brown. After hearing Piper sing at karaoke, Leo’s friends are begging him to consider Piper despite their animosity. Piper agrees, reluctantly, and their proximity both ramps up their tension but also their feelings toward each other.

Once again, Katie has managed to write a contemporary romance that is overfilling with all the emotions, humor, friendship, self-reflection, family, and romance. The Ones We Hate is everything I love about self-published writing - Katie has no problem going there, taking spicy scenes to the next level (including lots of “location based spice” as Katie called it on our live chat). I don’t want to spoil it but there were definitely some scenes that I have not read before that were both very hot and also very emotional.

Katie also does a great job of informing readers about some sensitive topics in the story with content warnings. The care that is given to a side character as she deals with sexual harassment/assault and gaslighting, as well as the ongoing themes of grief and loss, is truly a masterclass within the romance sphere because while these topics are included, they are expertly interwoven with the main romance storyline.

The Ones We Hate is out now in ebook, paperback, and on Kindle Unlimited - it definitely helps to read The Ones We Fight For first to provide some background on the characters (and because it’s so good), but you can read this as a standalone as well.

Only Katie can have me crying in the prologue. I knew Katie wasn’t going to hold back on diving into big feelings after having my heart cracked open by The Ones We Fight For… and this was perfectly messy, tender, hilarious, and hopeful, and I loved it.

Raise your hand if you’re a people pleaser and feel guilty sending food back at a restaurant when your order is brought out wrong but you just sit there quietly and pretend you’re totally fine with it? Just me? I related so much with Piper in those moments when she would shove down her own desires for what she thought was everyone else’s benefit. But, Leo 🥹 Leo pushing just enough, encouraging, and giving Piper opportunities to advocate and unapologetically take up space for herself touched my heart so deeply.

The push and pull of Piper and Leo’s personalities was so well balanced and I loved how it continually brought them to a place of open and honest conversation, and eventual compromise where they decided they were worth fighting for instead of against. They were both fiercely protective, loyal, caring, passionate, and discerning, and I loved how Leo was always right there to catch Piper when she fell… or tripped… or ran into something. As someone who regularly falls going up the stairs and struggles with spatial awareness, I felt a kinship with Piper.

Katie’s writing truly shines when it comes to writing a found family. She melds together these imperfect, complex individuals with partners, friends, coworkers, and frenemies who become complement each other brilliantly and as a collective, shine so bright and bring so much joy, laughter, and warmth to their community. I adored the scenes when everyone was together - there was such comfort in the chaos.

Let’s talk spice. Holy tension, Batman. I was downright giddy over this delicious tension and I’ve never looked forward to a spicy scene more. The spice was fantastic AND Katie delivers a comprehensive ‘dick-tionary’ in case you want to revisit those scenes.

If you love romance that will break your heart but then piece it back together, pick up Katie’s books!

Piper & Leo have hated each other since high school. Fast forward, now they are working together for the college musical that Leo is directing and could make or break his future career. In this SOLID enemies-to-lovers, Katie writes with wit, truth, and spice.
And the characters 👏Piper is strong, sarcastic, hella clumsy, and going through a lot while trying to pretend she isn't. Basically, she is relatable AF. Leo is strong, stubborn, and everything Piper needs; and therefore, hates. Abuelita is a true queen, and I will fight anyone who tries to argue that.
I 100% recommend reading this book. It is cathartic for all us people-pleasers out there, with some humor and spice thrown in to keep us interested 😉

Title: The Ones We Hate
Author: Katie Golightly
Hero/Heroine: Leo & Piper
Tropes: Enemies to Lovers, Forced Proximity, He Falls First, Grumpy x Sunshine, Opposites Attract,

tw/cw: off page death of family members (drunk driving, cancer), off page sexual assault/harassment, brief mention of an off page character’s pregnancy complications, on page panic attack, manipulation, discussions of alcohol abuse, grief, poverty,

✨the good ✨

I didn’t think I could love two characters more than I loved Walker and Talia, then Leo and Piper turned up all like ‘hold my beer’. I cannot even begin to describe how much I loved these characters for fear of doing them an injustice. Assuming right from the off that these two despised one another, what you actually realise is that they’re perfect together.

Piper, a people pleaser with a sunshine personality, has been through some pretty tough times over the last 6 years, having lost her parents when she was 16. Determined not to be a burden to anyone, she puts a smile and pretends everything is ok. Until Leo Diaz. Her high school nemesis and soon to be her director in their college’s performance of Guys and Dolls. Not afraid to call her out on anything, these two clashed at every opportunity. But you know what they say about love and hate… and the line between these two was microscopic.

This story packed one hell of an emotional punch. It was incredibly well written and I loved how the author didn’t shy away from the tough topics, such as grief, loss and poverty. Leo and Piper were complete opposites in most aspects of their lives, however when it came down to it, they were both extremely vulnerable and chose to find solace in one another. I loved how they weren’t afraid to challenge one another, even if it caused friction. Leo was perfect at helping Piper to take what she wanted, and I loved how Piper challenged Leo and his approach to certain situations. One key lesson I’m going to take from this story is exactly what Abuelita said - never be afraid to take up space.

Loved, loved, loved this book, I’m literally feral waiting to read more about these incredible characters.

✨ the bad ✨

Harden. Hornbill. Simultaneous dick punches for the win.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this to read. This is my honest review.

✨overall thoughts: not enough words to describe how incredible this book was

3.5-4 stars, but honestly I'm not sure I can be trusted because it has been a while since I finished this book. And I mean that in the sense that it was probably more 4 stars than anything else.

What I remember liking:
+frankly a delicious tension between the two main characters. It might not be enemies to lovers in the fantasy sense, but it is definitely two people that really dislike each other

+The spice was spicing but often led by emotional intensity or a way to connect. So it was definitely spicy but helped to understand the characters better.

+Mental health representation and conversations around trauma were done well.

The banter, the spice, the consent, the laughter, and the growth of the characters had me hooked. I was so excited to see Piper get her own book and see her years later.

Piper and Leo are perfect for each other - in the end. They knew each other in high school but you would have never imagined they would have a HEA in that scenario.

Read along and see how they both work through grief, trauma, and their past and grow individually and together.

Oofta… this hit me in a lot of emotional feels. Piper and Leo’s banter was so funny though and definitely helped to balance the heavy topic of grief. The tension. The banter. The spice. The emotion. If Katie isn’t an instant buy for you after this book, we aren’t friends 😂😂🙈

Not only will the main relationship have you falling on your knees, but it’s the family and friend relationships that will have you in tears. The way Katie writes real human emotion and mental health representation is perfection.
