I was looking for a picture-less novel to read to my kids (both under 10) for a bedtime story and I found this one in a local book store. The issue I’ve been having is that while my kids enjoyed most of the picture novels I’ve read to them, picture-less novels wound up being a bit too boring. I felt that I’d give this one a go, as most Spider-Man stories are a little more thrilling and straightforward than the average kid’s book, with a popular character to boot.
While obviously the Spider-Man origin story has some more mature elements (Uncle Ben’s death, mostly), they didn’t seem to mind, and the rest of the book was a smashing success. The descriptions of his powers and deeds got them extremely pumped up, and (like I hoped when I opted to buy a non-picture novel) it has activated their imaginations. “It’s kind of like a TV show in my mind!” Was a remark they shared with me, & that’s exactly the type of thing that makes reading a proper book so rewarding.
If you have a kid around the age of 10 who likes super heroes, I recommend this book. Short chapters, easy to read prose and a good adaptation of the Spider-Man origin story.
