The Houses of Yorkshire #3

The Cloverton Charade

Rate this book
In this sweet, low-spice Regency romance, longtime rivals join forces at a country estate as they investigate the curious goings-on with a large collection of antiques. A perfect read for fans of Poldark, Julie Klassen, and Sarah Eden.

Olivia Brannon knows her goals are unconventional. As a young woman in Regency England, her best bet--according to society--is to marry well and secure a steady future for herself. But Olivia has never been interested in convention. She'd prefer to follow in her deceased father's footsteps and journey to foreign lands in search of rare and valuable antiquities.

Eager to make a name for herself in the antiquities world, Olivia jumps at an invitation to join a wealthy widow at the famed Cloverton Hall to evaluate her private antiquities collection. Secrecy of the task is vital, and to conceal her efforts Olivia must pretend to be a house party guest to avoid suspicion and explain her presence.

Lucas Avery, whose father was a rival of Olivia's father, has also arrived at the Cloverton Hall house party, hired by the new master of Cloverton Hall--the widow's nephew--to appraise the renowned Cloverton Hall collection. When Lucas discovers Olivia masquerading as a party guest while covertly conducting her own assessment, he's keen to renew the family rivalry. But as their paths frequently cross, he's unprepared for the effect the refreshingly honest--and beautiful--Olivia has on him.

Yet all is not as it seems. Both Olivia and Lucas are shocked by the astonishing discovery of counterfeit pieces, and when the unexpected occurs, everyone is a suspect . . . and Olivia and Lucas both must choose whom they will trust.

Get ready to fall in love with the charming characters and delightful story you'll find in The Cloverton Charade. You'll want to clear your schedule so you can escape to the English countryside of the Regency time period in this "pitch-perfect blend of suspense and sweetness" (Publishers Weekly). The Cloverton Charade is the third book in the Houses of Yorkshire series but can be read on its own.

When you read so many romances, especially Regency or Victorian romances of the aristocracy - they can become tedious. Mo' money, mo' problems, and all that jazz, right? What was so great about Ladd's novel is that you have working-class people who are still nuanced characters looking to do right in the world!

I also get tired of reading smut, and as this is a new adult-style read, I feel that we have gotten to know young Alicia's character well! Her motivations to be an honest and true woman, her passion for her profession, etc - are the characteristics we want all our heroines to have. As for her hero counterpart, Lucas was also one to be admired.

An easy couple to root for, a decent little mystery, and you have the perfect brain candy read!

While not one interested in expensive art, I do appreciate antiquities and enjoyed reading the unique storyline of this clean historical romance (releases on September 3rd, 2024).

I like how the story began with our two main characters as children. Then what bad decisions and hard circumstances of life can do to change friends into enemies - especially when the people are in the same type of business.

It was a nice, clean, historical fiction tale that was light on the romantic actions, but romance was thought about and spoken of as much as the collectible art because of the high society house party full of eligible young people.

I found myself a wee bit bored mid-way til the end. I really had looked forward to it after enjoying book 1 and 2 in this series very much. This one was good. It was ok.

side note * The mention of "port" seemed realistic at a house party, but I became weary of hearing about port, wine, brandy, etc over and over. I normally don't notice, but it seemed excessive?

I truly enjoy the writing of Sarah E Ladd a lot. But enjoyed the first two more.

I received a complimentary copy of this title and this is my honest opinion. :)

I love a good art theft story and Sarah E. Ladd delivers one wrapped in a beautiful historical fiction wrapper. This was a book I was reluctant to put down until the very end - of course, you know the happily ever after is coming, but the art theft made this exciting and unpredictable. I thought I figured out the scheme, but I was delighted to be wrong!

This is a rivals to lovers story with families that used to be united. Olivia Brannon (other reviews refer to her aa Alicia, but she’s Olivia in my ARC) and Lucas Avery were children when their fathers broke their partnership to have separate films dealing in antiquities trading. Both fathers are dead when the story begins and their children have followed in their footsteps, though Olivia is reduced to a clerk in the firm her father created due to her sex.

A former client of the fathers’ has died and his heir hires Lucas to assess the family collection. His widow hires Olivia to assess her personal items. Olivia and Lucia are reunited at the country estate where they are appraising items discreetly while acting as guests at a house party. At one point, Lucas asks Olivia to consult on an item and they find themselves in a midst of a forgery scheme.

Yes, the romance is predictable, but it’s so lovely to watch it unfold. The forgery part of the story was fascinating and pulled in some secondary characters. The culminating action scene is satisfying, though the men involved try to leave Olivia out of it.

Yet another wonderful installment in the Houses of Yorkshire series! The books are not connected or dependent on each other, so no background info is needed to dive into this.

Cute story with a fun antique acquisition family “rivalry” twist.

I loved how Lucas & Olivia renewed their acquaintance and then it became a loose bond that turned into more. And that they trusted each other and never doubted each other’s abilities in the face of counterfeits.

Antiquities and romance in Regency times!

Olivia Brannon is a valuer for an antiquities house, Brannon Antiquities & Company.
She’s grown up living and breathing the past. Her father trained her. Olivia is knowledgeable and skilled.
When her father died her uncle took over the company. Olivia is relegated to the background.
Now Mrs. Agnes Milton, a serious chinoiserie collector wants Olivia to go to Cloverton Hall in Yorkshire to assess her personal collection with a view to selling.
Olivia is to go as Mrs Milton’s guest to a house party. No one is to know her real reason for attending. Olivia is giddy with anticipation and excited to leave the back room assessments she’s been forced to do since her uncle inherited the business.
Lucas Avery meanwhile has been asked by the new heir, George Wainbridge to value his uncle’s collection quietly.
Olivia and Lucas know each other. The firm, Flanner Auction House used to be owned jointly by their fathers until an argument between the two resulted in a split.
Having to dodge the inquisitiveness of the other house guests is exhausting. Olivia finds it tiring trying to fit in.
Meanwhile Avery has discovered fakes amongst the famed Milton collection. Somethings not right! Avery quietly calls on Olivia to verify his findings. Some of the items Avery and Olivia knew were the real deal when they were sold to Milton.
Someone has been stealing from the collection! The finding will prove to be both shocking and dangerous
An unusual regency novel that delves into an area that was so prevalent during regency times, the collecting of antiquities. The British acquisitiveness is still being negotiated around the world.
A winning combination, mystery and the flutter of Olivia’s heartstrings when thinking about Avery, give an excellent read!

I’m a bit torn on how to rate this book. I liked it very much. The antiquities storyline was interesting, and I always appreciate that Ladd writes about characters who work, instead of focusing exclusively on the aristocracy. I enjoy learning more about what life was like for “normal” people. Olivia was a wonderful heroine—smart, ambitious, and brave. I appreciated her forthrightness and determination. She was the type of character I really root for.

What kept this from being a five star read for me is that this felt more like historical fiction or mystery, as opposed to historical romance. Ladd’s books typically offer a blend of mystery/suspense and romance, but I felt like this book tipped more to mystery than romance. At times, the romance felt like a little bit of an afterthought, and they moved very quickly to marriage. I know the characters had known each other since childhood, but they did not speak for years. The marriage felt very rushed; I would have liked to see the relationship build more.

Having said that, the book was still highly enjoyable, and I recommend it. Just know that the romance isn’t necessarily the focal point of this book. Thanks to the publisher for providing an eARC via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Olivia and Lucas attend a house party. They are both there for secret reasons. But they know each other so they know they are there basically for the same reason, to check out the vase and other antiquities. I loved watching Olivia and Lucas come together. They worked together and then found romance together. I loved the mystery element of why there were so many counterfeits and the little bit of danger thrown in. I also enjoyed some of the other party guests that made this story a little more light hearted and fun. Overall, a good story and I recommend!

I really enjoyed this book! I love a good historical house party and this one had a bit of a mystery element added in as well! I thought the plot was interesting and the characters were easy to like! I really enjoyed how these characters overcame their family quarrel and appreciated each other’s skills and became friends. It was refreshing to see their friendship blossom into romance as they spent time together! So many books become super tedious when the characters spend the whole book hating the other person based on family fighting, but this book was the exact opposite!

I listened to The Cloverton Charade by Sarah E. Ladd and it was narrated by Jude Mason. I gave it a high 4⭐️. The narration was delightful and I highly recommend listening to it. It was a clean romance that had all the charm of a good historical regency. It felt more like a mystery than it did a romance to me and I found the house party the highlight of the novel. Sarah E. Ladd wrote an intriguing well planned out novel with a HEA.

Lovely addition to Sarah Ladd's The Houses of Yorkshire series. Each book in the series can be read as a standalone.

Readers will love this story of two antiquities dealers who have a hidden agenda at a house party in Yorkshire. I have long been entranced by stories of house parties. Not only does it include a houseful of guests that are thrown together for an extended period of time, they usually have some sort of drama unfolding. Maybe a murder or in this case.....an art thief or two.

This is a sweet rivals to more story in which Alice and Lucas's families partnership fell apart upon a misunderstanding between their fathers. Now both Alice and Lucas are trying to preserve their deceased parents legacy, each invited to the house party by a different family member to value the private collection. After discovering a fake antique, they join forces, determined to determine who is behind the forgery. While the romance was predictable, there were a couple of plot twists to keep me intrigued. A fun whodunit.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher through Netgalley and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

The third and finale book in the Houses of Yorkshire. Here I go! This could be read as a standalone since none of the previous characters are mentioned in this book. This is a story of second chance love with a usual Sarah E Ladd mystery woven inside. Olivia and her family deal with antiques. Something I have never read about before. It was interesting! I was unsure about Lucas. He was kinda strange at the beginning, but he did get better! Olivia was a fun character to get to know! The descriptions were quite lovely to read about. I wasn’t a fan of Tate. He was just annoying to me. I didn’t care for Mrs. Milton. She was just plain mean. I liked getting to see Olivia and Lucas get a second chance or a chance to really get to know each other and fall in love. Together, they come across counterfeits and must work as a team to solve who is behind this. I did suspected the one counterfeiter, but not the other. Go, Olivia, at the end! I’ll be honest, this book did struggle to keep my attention at times, but overall, it was a sweet and enjoyable read!

I enjoyed this story. I really liked both Olivia and Lucas, and was glad that they were able to see beyond the familial prejudices and professional potential for rivalry to work together to figure out what had happened with the 'Cloverton Collection'. I also liked that there was a basis for their relationship . . . it did not feel like an 'insta-love' kind of situation, but rather a rediscovering of a friendship that had potential to be more.
As far as 'whodunnit', I did guess one of the players correctly, and also was correct about their motivations, but definitely did not guess how all of the pieces fit together.
All in all, a good end to this series!

TITLE: THE CLOVERTON CHARADE
AUTHOR: Sarah E Ladd
PUB DATE: 09.03.2024

THE CLOVERTON CHARADE by Sarah E Ladd is a Regency historical mystery and romance, that is a book three of the Houses of Yorkshire series. Though I haven’t read the first two books, each book is a stand alone. This compelling story is about Olivia and Lucas, antiquity dealers from competitive houses hired separately to assess the family collection. There is mystery and romance, which I found engaging and compelling.

An excellent Regency era tale set between London and an estate in Yorkshire. A house party brings together people from different levels of society under some pretense. A mystery is uncovered, and a romance begins amidst the tension.

Well-written with a steady pace, this story kept my interest from the first to last pages. All of the tension builds to an exciting climax and some 'aha' moments that I didn't see coming. There is a bit of action, but nothing too violent.

I enjoyed the characters of Olivia and Lucas, and hoped they would be given a happy resolution to their conundrum. They had a backstory that added a theme of forgiveness, family loyalty, and finding their own way forward.
Olivia was a young woman with a strong moral compass, who didn't shrink from a challenge. I applauded her bravery and felt for her vulnerablility among the societal elites. She was courageous and true. Loved the ending!

A good, clean read, perfect for any reader from teens and up. 4.5 stars

Both Lucas & Alicia are out of their element trying to blend into society at Cloverton Hall so they can at the same time secretly appraise/sell the Cloverton estates antiques. That's a simple enough idea, except their families are enemies and now they have to work together. While secretly appraising and researching the antiques found at the Cloverton, they uncover a major scandal. At the same time they are trying to solve this crime they are also having to mingle with society and fend off interested suitors. They have to work hard to not uncover their true place in society to those around them. And most of all try not to uncover their true feelings they are starting to feel , for each other.

Forced proximity
Forbidden romance
Suspense
Mystery and Enemies to lovers all taking place in a historical backdrop!

I love it!!!!

I removed one star because it at times was a bit wordy, making me struggle to stay engaged... and it was a slow burn romance wise. That said it started to pick up eventually and then I was all in and couldn't put it down! So much so, I think I need to buy more Sarah's books!

I always love the author's book and this one was no surprise in that department.

House parties are a common setting in Regency novels, but this one's different: the party provides the perfect excuse for Alicia and Lucas to perform their work. They have both been hired separately to evaluate collections of antiques that could prove pivotal for each own's businesses. Of course, they recognize each other and know what they're really there for, even if the other guests are ignorant of the true reasons.

I liked how this premise set up the perfect setting for Alicia and Lucas to spend time together, appreciate the other's talents, and develop a friendship that only grows. The antiquities and forgery aspects were truly interesting, as it was the way Alicia and Lucas discovered what was going on.

Highly recommend this one. You don't have to read the series in order but it adds to the enjoyment.

I thought this was such a fun mystery romance novel! The ensemble of characters were all so interesting and varied and I really enjoyed seeing Olivia grow in her own estimation of herself throughout the story. I also loved that there was only openness and honesty between Olivia and Lucas and that the betrayals happened with other characters. The antiquities storyline really drew me in and I had a great time reading it!

Olivia Brannon has a secret and she is not the only one. Olivia is hired by a widow to evaluate an extensive private collection of antiquities at Cloverton Hall. Under the guise of a house party, Lucas Avery is also invited to Cloverton Hall by the new heir to catalog and broker his uncle’s vast quantity of artifacts.
But there is much more going on behind the scenes. Olivia and Lucas, though their families are currently at odds, vow to find out the secrets and set things right.
Lots of subterfuge, clandestine meetings and mystery, surround Cloverton Hall, and its inhabitants. This regency tale is rich in atmosphere and has a clever plot that is intriguing, where anybody could be the force behind hiding the truth for their own gain. The romance of Olivia and Lucas was believable and sweet.
Put this on your list for an interesting, historical, clean read.

Lovely conclusion to the series. Both Olivia and Lucas grew up knowing about antiquities. After their father's had a disagreement, the two families separated. Years later Olivia and Lucas reconnect at Yorkshire house party. Although they are both attending the house party to secretly assess the Cloverton Hall collection, their service is for two different members of the Milton family.

A house party, an art forgery mystery, and rivals finding friendship.
I loved this story! The details of the house party, the art descriptions, and the romance were perfectly balanced. I thoroughly enjoyed Lucas and Olivia’s story. Their meeting after so many years and finding that neither was what they had thought was sweet. Their relationship grew to friendship and love quickly but was very believable. I enjoyed many of the secondary characters and was shocked at the solving of the forgery mystery.

Another fabulous book from Sarah E. Ladd! I loved the settings in London and Yorkshire and the cast of characters was delightful. Especially our main leads, Alicia and Lucas. A story of mystery, antiques, family history, family rivals and growing attraction, this one is sure to have you turning the pages and be transported to a different time.

I loved the history between Lucas and Alicia and watching that play out the more we come to know these characters. Their meeting at the very beginning of the book, as well as at the house party, were very fun. I was holding my breath at the house party meeting waiting for the shoe to drop, so to speak. Ohhhh, you'll be waiting as well to see if their secret will remain intact or be outed.

There are several secrets floating around during this one, can you spot them all? I have to say that I didn't. And once things started to be revealed I did a figurative face palm to myself, thinking well why didn't I catch that. But you're not supposed to until later on. But maybe you'll figure it out early if you're watching closely.

The antiquities were a really fun aspect of the book and very interesting. My heart sank a few times in regards to them. Which you'll discover along the way with Alicia and Lucas. They'll have to work quickly though or real trouble will abound.

Sweet love story mixed with mystery and whodunnit vibes, makes for a delightful read! I read and listened to the audiobook of this one and loved them both. I loved Jude Mason as the narrator. I was pulled into the story completely and loved how she breathed life into. Definitely one I recommend for fans of this author's work or if you've never read her books before, if you're a fan of mystery and Regency, you'll definitely enjoy this one. It is part of a series but they can be read as standalones or together. They're all wonderful.

Content: Clean and wholesome. Some moments of very mild peril.

Wow! What a fantastic book! It has romance, intrigue, and a mystery! I was completely surprised by the perpetrators! The romance is sweet and a reminder that love can happen when you least expect it!

The cast of characters is brilliant! Tied for my favorite is Olivia and Lucas! I love them both! They're extremely talented and smart! I like how they work as a team to solve the mystery. Mrs. Milton touched my heart. Her circumstances are not ideal, but she perseveres!

I really enjoy reading books by Sarah Ladd. Her books are filled with characters that are easy to like and relatable. The surprises that appear throughout the story are splendid!

“The Cloverton Charade” is a regency historical fiction. I felt that it was a bit slow and dry for the first portion of the book. It did seem to pick up towards the end with the mystery plot. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy regency mysteries. It was Overall a good book.

Hook: Two antique brookers, two collections, a house party, and a mystery.

Overview:
Language/Profanity: One use of 'Egad'
Faith: None
Romance/Sex: One kiss on the lips before marriage and a few kisses after, a kiss on the hand, a few kisses on the cheek. A slow growing romance.
A mention of a lady being taken advantage of and a baby coming because of it.
Also at the party, everyone is looking for a husband or wife...lots of flirting involved but nothing else.
Action/Adventure: There is no danger... not really, but there is a bit of action towards the end of the book.
Other: Nothing

Synopsis: When Olivia is asked to evaluate Mrs. Milton's antique collection and to hide what she is doing by going to a house party that Mrs. Milton's nephew is hosting, she never thinks that she will come across an old friend turned rival. Nor that she will find mystery and romance during that time.
When Lucas agrees to go to the house party in order to evaluate an antique collection of Mr. Wainbridge, he is surprised to see Olivia, the daughter of his father’s old business partner.
Together they need to figure out the mystery and stop the disaster about to ruin Mr. Wainbridge.

Even though it was slightly hard for me to get into and to stay in, this was such a good book! I know nothing about antiques or that time period, but it was still very interesting. I really liked the bits about the party and seeing how the rich people of that time acted. Another thing I liked was how the romance seemed to be slow; it wasn't love at first sight.
There was one place where there was a sentence that was wrong; it was starting to say something but it never did. Other than that, I don't think there were any inconsistencies or anything like that.
The story itself did not drag... I just had a hard time staying in it. It was very interesting, and you get a chance to find the bad guy(s).
We see two POVs: Olivia and Lucas'.
I liked the characters; they each had quirks and personalities. And the way the author wrote this makes me think that there may be more about some of the characters... hopefully. There was one character, Mr. Romano, who I thought was slimy and oily, but I was actually presently surprised.

Favourites/Thoughts
My favourite part... I'm not entirely sure there was a part that I liked more than the other, other than when Mrs. Milton is saying how she forgives her husband.
    My favourite quote:
“W-we are in a similar business,”Olivia stammered. A knowing grin curved Isabella’s lips, and she tilted her head to the side. “Many people are in a similar business, but may I point something out? They do not look at each other the way Mr. Avery looks at you.”
I enjoyed this clean romance that also has a safe mystery. I hope to read other things from this author sometime. A four point five-star read that is perfect for older young adults and older who like a mystery, a story set in the eighteen hundreds, and romance.

This book was lovely from start to finish. The pace of the story was well written and the characters consistent throughout the story. I enjoyed it immensely!

Olivia Brannon love and knowledge for antiquities comes from her father. She longs for adventure traveling to different countries and finding treasures as her father and mother did when she was younger. When an opportunity to inspect, evaluate and catalogue a collection was offered by Mrs. Milton, she immediately took the chance and its risks.

Lucas Avery is the son of Olivia’s father former business partner. Their parents broke the partnership years ago and along it the relationship of their families. Lucas is offered to evaluate, and catalogue the collection of the deceased Mr. Milton with the outmost discretion, if possible. Olivia and Lucas will reconnect after years at the same house party secretly evaluating different collections while maintaining their facade as guests. Their journey, and several mysterious events forced them to be in closer proximity than they initially wished to have but they can never regret.

The book was full of interesting facts about antiquities and their period which is a bonus for me.
I loved most of the characters specially Olivia, Lucas Julia, Tate and Miss Wainbridge. Hopefully there is a sequel about Tate’s story and more adventures for Olivia, Lucas and Julia. I would love to read about it.

This novel was written in the Regency era, the year being 1818, London. Olivia Brannon grew up in her family's business called "Brannon Antiquities and Company. Her father taught her all she need to learn about being an antiquities purveyor. Although, when her father passed away he left the company to his brother, Thomas. And Uncle Thomas was the girls guardian as well. Olivia and her sister did not like Uncle Thomas. One day a lady named, Mrs. Milton came in to their shop. She hired Olivia to come and do an appraise her collection at Cloverton Hall in Yorkshire.

It was a long journey there by stagecoach. There was to be a house party at Cloverton Hall, being hosted by Mrs. Milton's nephew. It lasted several days. Her husband had passed away and left the home to her nephew. Neither gets along, so Mrs. Milton wanted to keep her guest's expertise a secret. Mrs. Milton learned that her nephew, wanted to sell all of her husband's collections. Mr. Wainbridge had hired Lucas Avery, a purveyor, to assess his Uncle's collection. While at the party, Olivia meets Lucas Avery. Their fathers were rivals in the antiquities business. But after a bit they renew the friendship they had in their childhood.

While there they discover counterfeit items in the Uncle's collection. So there becomes a mystery as to whom is responsible for this evil deed. I wanted to read this book because I love era of the 1800's. I was so pleased to read on to find a wonderful happy ending to this story. Thank you Sarah Ladd for letting me learn of this era called Regency. Also thank you to Net Galley and Thomas Nelson for allowing me this read prior to being published.
