Find out what kind of critter Mr. Monitor really is.
So first off, I need to acknowledge that Asia Miles is a former student/current friend. Knowing her just gives me perks of knowing some of her obvious inspiration for this story. Monitor lizards get kind of a bad rap here in Thailand, and Asia had fun flipping that concept on its head and portraying a mild-mannered, stand up family lizard, and how he spends his average, very relatable day. Our students will be thrilled to read a book by someone they know, and the nods to places, people, and things they recognize from everyday life here in Thailand. Asia's illustration style is adorable. I don't really care for monitor lizards, but she's managed to make them seem cute and friendly - that's no mean feat!
I know Asia Miles personally, and she has grown up and lived in Thailand where water monitors (which is the kind of reptile that Mr. Monitor is) are abundant and a daily sight. Mr. Monitor is super cute and gives me a sense of calm reading this book. I especially appreciated his daily breakfast runs to 7-Eleven and the foods he buys, IYKYK. Asia's illustration of Mr. Monitor going back home to his nest just made me chuckle because it is so true! That is where they often live here in the city!
Our students and any child in Thailand will appreciate this book for sure.
