‘I cry for the wonder of it all, the sheer bloody relief, and maybe a little for the lost years.’

SHANNON
At 29 years old, my professional life is on track, but my personal life, not so much. So I’ve broken up with my girlfriend and I’m backpacking around the world hoping to find myself.I’m not looking for another relationship, but what I do find is a cute dark-haired twink sleeping in my hostel bed one morning. How did that happen? And why do I feel it’s a good idea to spend more time with this seemingly shameless person?

When it turns out I actually like him, we start travelling together. Could he hold the answer to some of the questions I’ve been asking myself?

But when my past interrupts our passionate sojourn in Paris, things become complicated. Does this spell the end of my chance at love?

MAX
I can’t stop embarrassing myself in front of the gorgeous hunk I met on the overnight train, so I really can’t believe that he wants to spend more time with me. I know I shouldn’t, but I just want to flirt with him. After a few days travelling together, I have a sneaking feeling he might be the love of my life. But is this simply a holiday fling or is he serious about me?

This MM Holiday Romance includes travel fun exploring Norway and Europe with a side-trip to Australia, an unexpected bed-mate, strangers-to-lovers, first times, an interfering ex, supportive friends, bad choices, moderate angst, and a guaranteed but hard-won HEA.

Content suspicions of homophobia, suicidal ideation (nothing happens), blackmail, assault (not between MCs), explicit sex scenes.

3.5 stars for an okay adventure romance.
Shannon, 29 years, is in Norway and continues on a journey around the world on the train.
Max, 24 years from Aussie, was on the same train with Shannon but hadn't spoken, just watching each other. Scenes lead on and Max and Shannon end up sharing a hostel room were things get urr snugly.
Shannon was straight and had never thought of a man in a romantically way.
The two become friends and travel to Sweden and Italy.
A great adventurous story for two friends becoming more to each other, Max was gay while Shannon was still figuring things out for himself.
A really great story written for the couple as feelings grow each day over 2 months traveling. This had 2 parts with them first meeting, then the breakup news which leads to the ending. I liked the first part as they'd grown closer to be boyfriends.
The second part was a really fast pace. The story goes in a totally different direction filled with all the dramas. Blackmail and violent attack included.

I’m reading this and thinking, ‘Are others feeling this book like I am?’ The writing, characters, and setting are hitting my heart! Max and Shannon are an awesome couple! The so far few reviews for this new book, and writer?, are using the word ‘sweet’. I am thinking why sweet? To me that is faint praise. It has that element, but the intensity of the desire between the two MCs and the meeting and relationship building was socko from what I was reading, hanging on every well written word. Are others feeling this intensity? The inner thoughts from the dual POV were so well done. I noticed that the author had them exchanging no background information, which is odd as everyone asks, ‘What do you do?’ And being together 24/7 for weeks leaves room for a lot of conversation.
The book is divided into parts: Part One, Before Paris. An entertaining meeting between two very hot college backpackers and their subsequent falling into bed, and love. Part 2, Paris. L’amour, l’amour! I am a sucker for a Parisian fling and this one was scrumptious, beautifully written. Until it wasn’t.
Part 3, After Paris. I kept thinking while reading that this is 2023, not 1923, and views on morality are not as rigid. I’m a big fan of commitment, but not a forced one. The plot line went whiplash fast between ecstasy and agony. So much agony. Way too much for this reader and way too soap opera. To me, it was all needless, and not well written. In love partners talk. It was too unbelievable that Max and Shannon had no conversation about their bombshell breakup and subsequent separation. Their reconciliation and what led up to it was overwhelmingly overwrought and unbelievable.
There is a HEA complete with epilogue, but by then I was doing too much skimming to get an emotional payoff. I was going to give this five+ stars. I’m thinking that the word ‘sweet’ in the reviews is from politeness. I would still read another book by this author as their writing style is clear with good word choices.

This was a very sweet and engaging read from a new author. Max and Shannon’s story takes us on an amazing journey around europe, with just enough detail to make you feel like you are there, but not so much that it gets boring. There was a perfect amount of angst that you could feel building up through their travels. There was a little bit of “telling not showing” but it was quite minor for a new author.

Overall I really loved their relationship and story, with just a few small caveats that I think are part of being a new author. I can’t wait to read more from this author and I recommend this book! I’ll definitely be following them.

Some critiques that might be a bit spoiler-y below, so proceed with caution.

The way that Shannon was sorta waiting for Max to get attacked was implausible… you can’t predict that sort of thing as assaults like that are overall rare. It took me out of the story. And there was no explanation for why the guy started attacking. He was rich so it wasn’t for money so… whaaat?

Max’s previous history of sexual assault was alluded to but never explained, and this should have been in the story because Shannon needed to know.

I enjoyed the first part a lot, their meeting and travels were rather charming and felt fairly realistic if a little like a tour guide. But then the break up drama was really too over the top for my liking and the way they got back together was also not particularly believable (maybe a me thing?) The writing style was very good and I do feel the author has a lot of potential.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and am happy to leave a voluntary review.

I enjoyed this story of Max and Shannon on their backpacking trip across Europe. I would think that two fellow countrymen meeting randomly on a European trip and hooking up together (not that sort of hook up originally) to continue the journey could be entirely plausible and even desirable. I find seeing new places is much more enjoyable when you have someone to share the experiences with and talk about what you see and do. Even getting together and planning to continue with a relationship once heading home wouldn’t be that far fetched, especially with good chemistry between the parties involved.

In this case, the past intruded before Max and Shannon could get home to Australia, and life seemed to put them on different courses, until life didn’t any longer. Trying to recapture what was lost was worth the changes that needed to happen to get them to their HEA.

A realistic situation, Interesting and relatable characters, vivid descriptions of scenery in foreign lands, a taste of what staying in a hostel might be like, dealing with heartache and the depression which followed, and the resurgence of hope for a better future made for an interesting tale which held my interest and had me rooting for these two to find their way back together. Well worth the read.

A SWEET HOLIDAY ROMANCE WITH A TWIST!

I Did not expect this book to take such a turn the way it did by this new to me author but it was still a page turner!

You as reader expect fluff and sweetness where a holiday romance with a gay awakening is concerned but these two characters takes you on a rollercoaster ride wrought with miscommunication, bad decisions, heartbreak and an enduring love!

There are a lot of unanswered questions regarding some situations that occur during part two and three ( please read the content warning) but overall it was an engaging read with wonderful characters, a suspense filled storyline with character growth, endearing moments and a lovely tour abroad followed by a sweet epilogue!

Shannon has just ended his long time relationship with his girlfriend. He had never felt comfortable in the relationship and felt he needed to figure out himself in order to find happiness. So he set out backpacking across Europe.

Max is a beautiful soul that is just out to have fun. He begins a backpack party tour across Europe.

The two cross paths on a train and then find they are both staying at the same hostel. They quickly become friends and begin sightseeing together.

This story will make you smile and laugh. It will make you sad and grab your heart. Will Shannon find what makes him happy? Will Max ever feel like a whole person? Pleaee come read this wild story with amazing characters and wonderful world building that takes you on a journey with Shannon and Max.

I liked this book so much. Shannon and Max meet in Oslo, and before long, they are very much involved and traveling around Europe. It is a gay awakening story very sweetly told. The tenderness and passion are so beautifully written. The friendly banter is charming and delightful. But the whole truth is pretty bad, and when it strikes, hearts are broken. This part is also beautifully written but heartbreaking. Max has friends and reinvents himself, but when they meet again, there is only more heartbreak and pain. Shannon finally makes his grand gesture, and our happy ending ensues. This is a new author for me and is part of the great pleasure of Booksirens--finding someone whose words touch my heart.

Tropes: Travel romance, strangers to lovers, M/M

Rating: 4/5 stars

Spice: 4/5 stars

Angst:4/5 stars

" Or maybe our story starts on November 15. The day I told him I wouldn’t go back to Australia without him. That I wanted a life with him. That was the day he moved into my tiny Paris apartment and never left."

It was a quick read, fun, sweet and steamy story. It was the first book from the writer that I read and I liked the writing style and the whole world building. I recommend this enjoyable book to everyone!

This had a lot of potential but I struggled to get into it for the first ten chapters or so, mainly because of all the narration and very little dialog interaction between the main characters. I felt it would have been better to actually SEE them doing the things and getting to watch their relationship grow rather than just being told they did them. I did enjoy Max's flirtatious personality and Shannon's shyness. I felt for them as they hit their bumps and roadblocks but was glad to see them come out the other side, the stronger for it.

This book was unexpected for me. I wasn’t sure what to expect. The story was one that got your attention. The initial meeting, the drool was very amusing. Next, hostel mates, then traveling companions, you become invested. The traveling and blossoming romance was engaging. The drama that follows elicits sympathy but by now you’re full on rooting for them. From beginning to end the story drew you in and kept you reading. It was a fun read.

I really enjoyed Shannon and Max’s story! They travelled so many places that I’ve either visited or would absolutely love to visit in Europe. This was my first strangers-to-lovers story I’ve ever read and it was great. There was some angst but it overall led to a well-deserved HEA. I wasn’t a huge fan of the back and forth between character POVs, but I’m used to chapters being one POV. It was different but not horrible. I would definitely recommend this book!

This is a first book I have read by this author and I have to say it was a great read. I enjoyed the tour of Norway, Germany, and ultimately Paris implicit in the book

The chemistry of the two main characters and the development of their character was delightful. They were at different stages in their 20s but the leadership and follower were in line with their maturity level.

I look forward to further books from this author.

"Two Random Backpackers" is well written with wonderful characters. I enjoyed their travels, it felt like I was there with them. Having been to a few of the same places, the descriptions were spot on. Their love story was sweet although there are some parts that really stretch your heartstrings. I really enjoyed this book.

3,25⭐️

The first half was great, a sweet love story, a discovery of themselves. And then, it became really awkward… too many obstacles that it’s almost ridiculous… that’s unfortunate because I loved their relationship at first. Not a bad read, but not a fan of the reactions of Shannon and Max faced with difficulties that could have been resolved with just SOME TALKING LIKE TWO GROWN UPS!!

Well, I need a breather after this. The first half was ok, at times interesting as they traveled but a bit slow, not bad though. But then the second half hit and the whole thing was angst-filled it was so painful to read, Max's breakdown was just so freaking sad. A long story, with ups and downs, but a good read.

DNF @14%. Superficial. The MCs don’t seem like they’re 24+ year olds as they’re written, more like teenagers than adults, which isn’t an age group I’m interested in reading about

Shannon broke up with his girlfriend so decided to go on a backpack tour in Europe before he went to work for her father. Max going on an European tour but was doing it drinking, they met on a train after awhile they were doing the tour together and developed feelings for each other. But then Shannon’s ex girlfriend told her father that she was pregnant by him so he broke up with Max, went to his grandmas for a little bit then changed his name to his middle name and went back to college to become a veterinarian. Got a surprise when he found out his teacher was Shannon, they tried to talk but then Max left the college and went to Paris to study art. Shannon told his boss he wasn’t marrying the daughter and wasn’t the father then went after Max. After saving Max they were together. Good book!

There was a lot about this book that I loved. I loved both main characters. I loved how they met and fell in love. It was idyllic and sweet. Then I could see the trouble coming, and it hit so hard, I got whiplash. This duo took miscommunication to a whole new level. It was painful and frustrating to read. After two people spend so much time together, getting to know one another and falling in love, the way they crashed and burned just didn’t quite sit right with me. But they get through it, and that part was pretty well written. I do wish I had witnessed the villainess get her comeuppance on the page, rather than just had it glossed over, second hand. But like I said, there was a lot to really enjoy about these main characters, so I really couldn’t hold the things that bugged me against the book too much. I still rate it at just a hair under 4 stars (like 3.75).

Shannon and Max meet on a backpacking holiday through Norway and Europe, and the rest, as they say, is history. These two are wonderful together and you can't help but root for them. A few tears may be shed when times get tough, but very satisfying HEA.
