The Jeppesen Private Pilot Manual and is the standard of the industry and the most widely used private pilot textbook. This high quality, full color book is a primary source for initial study and review. It contains complete and detailed, yet easy to understand explanations of all the fundamental concepts which every private pilot needs to know to pass the FAA exams, and more importantly, to operate safely and effectively in the cockpit.
It's a textbook and it has mighty sparse competition so any notions of "better than" or "worse than" are out the window. The book's subject is the rudiments of flight in regulated airspace. i.e. It expounds on the principles of flight, preparation for flight, procedures, law, navigation, regulations, hazards and risks and their mitigation. The book has been around for some time and has been revised, updated and edited so it's polished and quite readable. The production quality is excellent, the illustrations lucid and the organization is exemplary.
Really colorful illustrations and good for understanding aviation's first steps, the private pilot license. Better than all the other manual's out there (comparing to Gleim or ASA) because of the illustrations.
This book is lovely. Not knowing anything about meteorology, airplane construction and other aviation-related topics, I found it enjoyable and useful to read in case you plan to take yourself up to the sky on a plane one day. There are some chapters america-specific, but it is still very universal.
Large, colorful, and expansive, the Jeppesen it provides a complete presentation of the tasks, skills, and knowledge for the aspiring Airplane Private Pilot. However, the material is also found within the FAA publications for free in digital form, and as paperback books. If you're going to stay in aviation, it makes more sense to go to the source for the training and not rely on a different summary.
Excellent book. Lots of great details. Color pictures were very good. Couple of minor mis-matches between a question at the end of chapter and a referenced figure in the back of the book. I found it very important to read all the text written onto each picture, as it was often NOT repeated again in the text below/surrounding the picture. The list of acronyms was VERY incomplete. They got the key ones, but I sure wish they had every single one they used in this appendix. It is a hefty paperback that got a lot of use. In the first week, I used an exacto-knife to cut off the spine. I 3-hole-punched the book and put it in a spiral notebook. Much better!! Very good end-of-chapter summaries. Questions were good at the end of the chapter, but I definitely used/appreciated the additional Jeppesen Test Study Guide book - REALLY rather mandatory to buy both of these books.
Probably your best bet for a premier Private Pilot's knowledge. Jeppeson clearly outlines every important fact and explains thoroughly. If that weren't enough, the book is filled on every page with color pictures on glossy paper. If you're going to get your pilot's license, (preferably fixed wing) you must get this book!
The essential study guide to anyone getting a private pilot license. Readable and informative. Its a good start for anyone looking to get into recreational flying.
