I inhale read like 5 volumes this weekend. The Black Moon Arc has been so far my favorite Sailor Moon storyline because how dark it is maybe? I mean the manga as a whole is way darker than the anime ever was.
But as I've been re-reading this I'm finding the whole Darien/Bunny/Rini dynamic odd. Maybe it's because I've since watched shows where a couple's future kid comes back from the future and the dynamic isn't so... spawned from jealousy? I don't know.
*Disclaimer for this series: The nostalgia is so real. I'm reading the '98 English translation versions because that is what I grew up with. So as I re-read this, essentially all of them will be 5-star because 7 year old Lainey won't allow me to rate them any less. So if you're looking for a critical review on these volumes, lol, you will not get it.
Sagas manga leídas: ''Sailor Moon'', y ''Sailor V'', de Naoko Takeuchi. Glénat, edición española. 18 y 3 tomos. ¿Quién no conoce ''Sailor Moon''?
I like how Sailor Moon and her Future self met in the end. I have to say I like the Future Sailor Moon! I thought it was hillarious how Rini come back after saying good bye!
This volume of Sailor Moon was slightly more interesting not only because the second group of villains were defeated but because the Sailor Moon of the present met Sailor Moon of the future who is Neo Queen Serenity. I know that in this manga there are rules for two souls who can't be in the same area for more than too long or one (or both of them) start to disappear.
It would have been nice to see a little bit more of the queen give Sailor Moon advice or words of wisdom because they did meet and talk for a short time. (okay maybe for about a minute or so) but that discussion could have been more interesting if we got more than just a 'thank you' from both Sailor Moons.
Ah well, don't know if I'll read the rest of the series.
This story arc is more complex and interesting than the first.
The Black Moon arc continues, with 3 scouts now missing. In this volume we find out who Rini really is, travel in time, and meet Sailor Pluto. We also get a glimpse at Moon's and Mask's relationship and Moon's insecurities within it.
And bonus! There's an adorable mini story called "Rini's Picture Diary" that helps lighten the mood after the cliffhanger book ending.
Sailor Moon is a fundamental series of manga. Most manga fans and readers will have read it or at the very least be familiar with the character and plot. I was one of those who did not grow up with Sailor Moon; I never really saw the anime episodes and by the time I started to read the manga the Sailor Moon series was long out of print. Nonetheless, I had an idea of what the series was about, the characters and of course the fact that it was famous and very popular. By now I have watched the first season and have read the series. Prior to reading it my expectations of this series were not too high – sure, there must be something about it that so many people would love it. But I also thought that a lot of its high praise must come from that air of nostalgia that Sailor Moon will always have. Despite my doubts, after having read it I feel that this manga truly deserves all the praise it receives!
There are a few things that I did not like – but that holds true for most things. For one thing, Sailor Moon does, in no way, look or act like a 14-year old. I would have been much happier if she were just a few years older. Mamoru is a nice character but the poor guy is pretty much the only representative of males. All other male characters that appear are only around for a couple of chapters, villains, minor characters or women disguised as men. And then, although it is typical for magical girl manga, the name of their attacks. I do not mind them having hearts and whatnot all over their costumes – but all the spells with sugar heart rains and the like were too much for me.
However!
Sailor Moon was so much more than what I expected of a magical girl series. Magical girl types of series often leave me with a lot of disbelief and hardly ever do more than just provide a bit of entertainment. I always thought of Sailor Moon to be just like that but the author delivered such beautiful and logical explanations to all the events happening. I loved the whole concept of the story and it let the characters be true guardians of the earth rather than teenagers in sparkly costumes. I am no big fan of science fiction but I loved how the author played with time and space. Because she managed to make Sailor Moon's role so much more believable for me, it was so much easier to route for her and feel with her through all the hardships.
I loved the power of friendship in this work and the romance between Sailor Moon and Mamoru was beautiful. I watched the first season of the anime before reading the manga: the relationship between Sailor Moon and Mamoru was ridiculous but the manga version just made my heart feel warm. The beautiful artwork of the author helped, of course. But all scenes between Sailor Moon and Mamoru were so gentle and warm. I loved how their memories of their past lives slowly returned to them.
The other thing is the art. The artwork is one of the most important things for me when reading a manga and Sailor Moons is just so astonishingly beautiful. Sailor Moon as a character was also very nice – she grows so much throughout the series and she is nowhere as annoying as she was in the anime adaption. It is also nice how the author goes into the other characters dreams and wishes and does not only focus on Sailor Moon – another thing that many magical girl manga do.
The series delivers many lovely and also comical scenes which is good because it also has many (to me unexpected) dark scenes. I probably enjoyed the middle arcs the most. However, I was very interested in the final arc about Sailor Galaxia and was rather disappointed that it fell so short. I think there could have been a lot more about that arc and I would have liked to have learned more about Sailor Galaxia’s motives and origins as well as the purpose and system of the Cauldron and how it creates the stars and planets.
All in all: nothing but the highest praise for Sailor Moon! I liked this series so much more than what I always what I always thought I would and I think it is never too late to become a fan!
I wrestled with this one a LOT. I'm a huge anime/manga fiend, so I'm used to some oddities in manga that can usually be chalked up to cultural differences. Being seeing Chibiusa But the ending was so, so beautiful - it is not an easy five stars, but the swell of emotions that rose in my chest when I finished this volume can't be denied.
Unlike a lot of people, I really love Chibiusa (in the manga) - I can totally relate to her. She feels so inadequate compared to her mother, and it's said that Neo Queen Serenity did not show her a scrap of affection. She felt more at home spending time with Pluto in the dark void... how sad and lonely she must've felt!
And while I hate knowing that NQS was not an affectionate or warm mother, it humanized her and her current incarnation as Sailor Moon.
I think the manga's biggest strength is the feeling it portrays - when reading, you can't help but feel this sort of dreamy melancholy. And all of those feelings metastasized in this volume - into betrayal, hurt, anguish, despair. But in the end, Sailor Moon and Tuexedo Mask and Chibiusa were able to overcome it all.
I'm totally aware that this review is rambling and most likely makes no sense - but hopefully it conveys the emotions I felt when reading this volume! I think this is one I'll always remember.
First of all, let's just take a moment to appreciate this gorgeous cover art. <3 Ok, so this book delves into the heart of the arc with plenty of exposition on what the heck is going on. We learn all about Black Moon, how they come for the future to gain control of the Silver Imperium Crystal, after they wiped out Crystal Tokyo in their own time. Rini too is from the future, traveling to the past in hopes Sailor Moon can save her mother who is encased in a crystal shield so Prince Diamond, who has some sort of freaky obsession with her, can't get to her. We learn that Sailor Pluto is guarding the doors to time as she has Chronos's blood in her and she is forever to be lonely watching that door...until King Endymion allows her to help Sailor Venus and Sailor Moon. Oh yeah, and surprise! Rini is Bunny and Darien's daughter from the future. The volume ends with Emerald zapping Sailor Moon and everyone screaming. I liked this volume because I feel we finally got proper exposition for the story. Where the Dark Kingdom arc glossed over Metallia's and later Beryl's motivations by only a quick frame, this whole volume was dedicated to reveals and narrative. I was quite happy with it.
Chibiusa had a great character transformation in this volume, The space-time travel was a bit weird. You have got to do it really well to pull it off and it has been done countless times, though when this first came out it maybe hadn't? Some characters look really similar to others. It really struck me in this volume. Just brushing over 900 years of not letting your daughter know you love her, If aging is supposed to slow down, shouldn't Usagi have beeb pregnant for decades? xD That Chibiusa x Mamoru gave me the creeps, Still overall I can't hate it because Sailor Moon has a place in my heart.

It was a little gross at times but definitely love the artwork and storyline. What can I say about this series that hasn't been said before? Tis great.
Story: Like a fine wine Sailor Moon R gets better with time from it's predecessor Sailor Moon. The Black Moon Arc introduces the same cast of characters are back with new villains to fight. The series arc split in two with the first part having the Doom Tree aliens appear, Ann and Alan. The second part of the series introduces the Black Moon villains. This time there is a little surprise waiting for Serena and Darien, Rini, there are also three new scouts that are found: Neptune, Uranus, and Saturn.
Drawing Style: The drawing is in the same style as in Sailor Moon. Simple, realistic and for the time period.
Characters: The characters and story continue to be developed as the mystery of what happened in the Crystal Kingdom is revealed and the destiny of the characters is foretold. The new characters (Especially the corresponding villains) are a good foil for the characters that were already introduced.
Overall: I thought that the second series arc of Sailor Moon was better than the first. The whole entire plot development takes on a new step in the second series making the volumes irresistible and the characters more lovable that before.
Note: This review was completed after reading volumes 4-10.
One of my all-time favorite series. The gateway series to getting me into anime and manga! The artwork impressed me so much, and the story was fun. It is still one of my favorites both because it's well-done, and for nostagia reasons.
This is the version that came out during the middle age of manga: before they stopped flipping the artwork, but right as TokyoPop was starting to emerge, and the volumes got cheaper. Unfortunately you could see it in the quality, as there were a lot of typos and sometimes the edges of pages would get cut off.
Wow, the story is so different. I still like the drawings, but the story being so different makes me uneasy. It is more mature, more..for adults. I still prefer the anime, even though the manga has some nice scenes. Usagi is more mature in the manga. Everyone is more mature because things happen so much quicker. Mamoru has powers. Kind of ridiculous powers, but anwyay everyone's powers appear out of nowehere. It gives more information about the past, the future and Chibiusa, but also it is more confusing. Many times you don't understand what belongs to the past and what to the future.
:DDD
