Emile Walker led a quiet life. His computers, his peaceful space, and the occasional dinner with his brother were all he needed. But ever since he hired Keyiara Ortiz Rodriguez as his weekly massage therapist, Emile couldn't help but seek her vibrant, boisterous company.
Keyiara 'Kiki' Rodriguez liked her life to be unpredictable and full of excitement. Her client in Brooklyn was the odd quiet time in her week. She didn't like introspective men, so why was she so intrigued by his serious demeanor and reserved manner? When Kiki elicits a rising in Emile's interest, it leads to the sweetest weekend together, but will their differences come roaring back after they leave the cocoon of their 48 hours of passion?
This story was part of the Current Anthology published in November 2022.
Emile is a bit of a recluse, a severely introverted tech genius workaholic who has one indulgence--his weekly massages with Kiki. Unbeknownst to her, he's crushing on her hard but doesn't know how to say it. But when it's time for her massage this week, his body speaks for him and he's embarrassed. Can he and Kiki get past it?
So, I'm not usually one for virgin romance. But anything my baby AH Cunningham writes is getting read by me so I dove in (with some nudging from the girls in the Black AF Book Club Discord, lol). I enjoyed this very much. I liked the way Emile was willing to learn, and Kiki pushed for her own satisfaction while teaching. There was an awkward moment that left a sensitive person like me with some second hand embarrassment but that just means it was real, and relatable. I liked that. His anxiety getting the best of him caught my heart--I was so sad for a minute. But proud he was determined to right the situation. Kiki had some toxicity, lol--but she was self-aware and very sweet. I loved the way her parents and grandmother set her straight real quick. And that she was receptive to it. Great story.
This is a cute opposite attracts Kiki loud and joyful while Emile is quiet and logical. I really enjoyed how they talked through the first time and there wasn't any shame in his sexuality. What AH does great is to write a supportive friend group and family.
So happy they worked out! It took a lot for them to put their guards down and it was so worth it in the end. Also the way she coached him was superb and I love this for them!
