An illegal party in a remote Yorkshire house ends in tragedy…
When Thomas Wentworth-Scott is accused of murder, his mother can’t bear to see the family name tarnished. She insists ex-DCI Henry Ward helps her.
A young woman was found dead in a bathtub during an illegal party that Thomas held amid the Covid lockdowns. Unsurprisingly, witnesses are reluctant to come forward.
Indeed no one seems to want to get to the bottom of the matter, not least the police who botched the initial investigation.
Now causing problems where he was meant to solve them, might Henry’s desire for the truth lead him to become a victim himself?

Henry is a true detective. He doesn't care for personal glory. AaHenry wants is to solve a mystery. The mystery is a puzzle or game to him. He wants to play by the rules and doesn't understand why anyone wouldn't follow the rules.
I have one more book to read in this series. I will miss Henry and the rest of the characters. Last last book of this series should be interesting as well as providing justice in the end.
These books just get better and better. I think between them Henry and Kean make a formidable team. Somehow the author manages to surprise me at the end of each book. This is a fabulous series, I’m onto the 5th one now, and I hope Ric writes some more.
I read an awful lot of crime, around 100 books a year, and these ones, whilst they’re not grim and gory they are well written and entertaining with good twists at the end. Fabulous. Thoroughly enjoyed them.
Henry, retired policeman but still a detective at heart. He’s been asked to look into a suspicious death that happened during an illegal lockdown party by the accused’s mother. Lots of twists and turns and Henry won’t rest until he finds the truth, no matter what the fallout. A good read that kept me guessing until the end
Another excellent story in the Yorkshire detective mystery series. Great characters and an interesting storyline that had lots of twists and turns.Looking forward to reading more in the series.
A quick entertaining read based in an area I know well. A good twist at the end too. I did think the involvement of the neighbour rather strange, but otherwise a reasonable plot.
The writing is good and it’s a quick read. This is the 1st book I’ve read in the series. I have to say the MC is a downer. He doesn’t seem to have much going for him. His life revolves around his dog and his nosy neighbor. He was also easily duped by one of his suspects.
It started ok but the plot and the characters got less interesting as the book went on. Maybe a two or three out of five on the somewhat desperate for something to read airport read scale
Another excellent tale of intrigue and mystery for ex Detective Chief Inspector Henry Ward to sort out. I love the characters especially the Henry himself and his neighbour Jean.
Oh wow!!! That took me by surprise. There's nothing like being played. Especially when it's your life on the line. Insanity runs rampant is the only way to explain it. Very well written!!
Ex business partner has accused Thomas of wealthy family the Wentworth-Scotts of murder. That of Freya Harrison at a party during lockdown 3 years ago. The family want Ward to verify that it was suicide. Than it becomes complicated. An entertaining modern mystery
