I'm very confused as to why this says 'expected release date 2019' when I bought it in a bookshop and have finished it? Anyway, I don't really know what to say. A) it served its purpose as in I read 1 to 2 stories per night before going to sleep and definitely slept well afterwards. B) there is a wide variety of story excerpts, short stories and poems in this. Some I'd read before, some I didn't know. C) I loved some stories. Others I didn't particularly care for. Others I'm not sure I even truly understood. Mostly because they were excerpts of bigger stories that made no sense without the context (which was fine for the ones where I actually knew the whole story, but not for the ones that were unknown to me). D) I can only give this 3 stars because well I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. I enjoyed some of the stories but not all, so I feel like 3 stars is pretty fair.
I absolutely loved the idea behind this book. It had a beautiful cover and beautiful intentions, with such a great sounding title and premise, but just didn’t quite deliver in the way I wanted it to. I really did love the time I spent reading this just before bed, tucked up with a cup of herbal tea, and the fact that it meant I set intentions with my reading to only read it when I knew I’d fully enjoy the time, in the way it was intended.
However, the stories themselves were very hit and miss, with notable favourites coming from only 6 of the 33 entries. I really did enjoy Wynken, Blynken and Nod, The Mouse, and From ‘Amanda’, to name a few, but I lost track of just how many it felt like a huge slog to get through. Normally this wouldn’t bother me too much, but given that this was a book intended for bedtime reading and de-stressing, it felt a little misaligned.
Maybe I’m just not smart enough to understand what half the authors were meaning in their writing, but so many of the stories took crazy amounts of focus from me just to understand what was going on, with unnecessarily complicated and long descriptions. This also wasn’t helped by a number being excerpts from other, longer stories, making them even harder to follow as you’re just thrown in without context, especially for those which I hadn’t read in full previously.
Overall, it’s not an awful collection by any stretch, but it could’ve done with some refining and alterations to really suit its purpose. I’ll probably revisit some of the stories, but many will be forgotten too unfortunately.
The Selfish Giant - Oscar Wilde A Portrait - Guy de Maupassant The Golden Windows - Laura E. Richards The Beauties - Anton Chekhov Three Questions - Leo Tolstoy Xingu - Edith Wharton
A good friend found this book for me and hoped it would help relax me after a stressful couple of years.
I can say it definitely helped me relax at bedtime and most of the stories and all of the poems soothed me.
I will say though that it started strong and became gradually worse towards the end. It may just be me but the stories in the first half were just easier to read and more enjoyable.
It started really strong with The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry. I knew the plot but don't think I'd ever read it before; it was delightful. The Mouse by Saki was next; it brought a smile to my face as I realised it was almost the plot of one of my favourite Mr Bean segments.
Other standouts due to their whimsical, fairy tale feel were East of the Sun, West of the Moon by Andrew Lang and The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde. I read the latter as a child, and I still see the illustrations from that book in my mind when I read it today.
I loved each poem, but my favourites were To Sleep by Wordsworth and Wynken, Blynken & Nod by Eugene Field.
This book is testament to the facts that adults too enjoy simple fairy tales as well as heavy doses of nostalgia.
And finally i finished it!! 2 month in a book! This is not me at all. I have read other books during this period but this one i really don't know what's wrong with the book or is it me! the first story touched me and i felt sad for the two couples who tried to please each other however it didn't work
I have “finished” this audiobook multiple times. It’s on Spotify Premium and I always put it on when I need help sleeping, and it works as well as my usual meditations. I feel like most of the negative reviews are from ppl reading physical copies.

I have trouble sleeping and loved the idea of a book of pleasant short stories to help me get to sleep. Unfortunately, the lack of editing in this book just stressed me out. The book desperately needs a copyeditor. It has an incredible number of punctuation and spacing errors, especially missing commas and periods. There are some glaring misspellings and spacing issues as well. By page 17, I had found 2 missing periods, 5 missing commas, 1 misspelling, and 2 spacing errors. There were also some sentences that were just so awkwardly worded (e.g., "You will almost probably ...") that I wondered if English was not the author's first language. Anyway, the concept of this book was good, but definitely save your money and find a different book of short stories!
An eclectic mix of excerpts from some of our well loved classics, short stories and a bit of poetry to round it out. I enjoyed revisiting some of the classics and enjoyed some of the short stories and poetry but if it wasn’t for my complete obstinance about not finishing this book I’m afraid I would’ve given it up a third of the way in.
This was a cute book, mainly a combination of excerpts from existing literary works. It was a pleasure to read and stirred up some real nostalgia, as I'd read a lot of these stories as a child. It felt kind of like catching a glimpse of an old friend's life through your Facebook feed.
