In The Bohannon Witches series, Emily Bex detailed what the sister witches were cooking up in the kitchen, which brought about the idea of this companion cookbook.
In the fictional story, two of the sisters are on a quest to find a grimoire. In the author’s thinking, a journal of spells and what is needed to cast them seemed much like a cookbook. This launched the idea to create a combination of the two and this unique cookbook was born.
This exquisite book is a compilation of beautiful art, created by Dawne Dominque, fun facts collected by Emily Bex, and over three decades of recipe creations by Amy Smith. The result is not only a companion to the series, but a cookbook for the ages.
The recipes found in The Bohannon Witches Cookbook were created to be easy, healthy, and designed for busy women who want to put freshly prepared food on the table without spending long hours in the kitchen.
Emily Bex is the International Best Selling author of the epic six book Medici Warrior Series. As she says, “Why start small?” She worked for over twenty years in marketing, developing ad campaigns, catalogs, product launches and promotional literature. She figured if she could write creatively about products, then surely she could write something about these characters that were rattling around inside her brain. She currently lives in Virginia, but has used her extensive love of travel, both foreign and domestic, to create the backdrop for her characters to play out their story.
1.5 Stars. I wanted to love this cookbook. The cover was lovely and I couldn't wait to settle down with it and a mug of tea on a lazy afternoon. However, while there was slight organization (i.e categories for Breakfast, Soup, etc.) the book itself isn't intuitive. There is no Index, no lists of the witchy lore and what pages they were found on and the nature of this Kindle book doesn't allow for searches as it typically would.
At the very least I would have expected a list of the Directions, Properties and Associations found either with the Contents or the Index. It doesn't need to be exhaustive but if I'm wanting something for Abundance for instance having a list of page numbers to refer to would have been helpful.
The illustrations are so pretty but at times it felt crowded and it is annoying when a page of lore came between an ingredient page and its associated recipe. I was surprised the Contents didn't have the same look as the rest of the book and appeared to be an afterthought. There were also several pages that weren't cropped properly and detracted from the whole.
For a book being billed to busy kitchen witches this one is practically useless since as already mentioned there is no functioning search for this book even for the Contents. I don't always have the wherewithal to sit and page through the entire book every time I wish to use it. Not to mention there aren't actually any page numbers!
Nor was I pleased to note that when cans, bags, pouches or boxes of an ingredient were called for there weren't associated sizes included such as 8.5 oz for the Jiffy cornbread mix. Products such as these can be regional or even discontinued and people need to know the sizes so they can choose a reasonable substitute. Products can also change sizes over time which is why it can be so difficult using vintage cookbooks. The knowledge is common and authors assume it will always be known which simply isn't the case. This was such a disappointment.
Everyone knows that Emily Bex delivered a saga worthy of Anne Rice praises in her Medici Warriors. Then, she delivered to us the Bohannon Witches in a duet with a twist at the end that made her readers salivate for more! Living up to her legendary writing skills, she is delivering an outstanding series next year…meanwhile, she and her sister put together a little something special and unique that is a part of their souls…a cookbook based on the grimoire and cooking dishes in her witch books! This is not just a cookbook! It looks like it is written on the pages of a grimoire! The art, illustrations, and the information contained within the pages is spectacular! This is a book of love, comfort food, and information about certain ingredients you cannot afford to pass by! Not only are these recipes from the heart, but it gives us a little insight as to what one of our most talented and favorite author’s desired cuisine is! She and her sister wrote this book dedicating it to the many fans acquired from The Medici Warrior saga and the Bohannon sisters! I know I spent hours combing through just reading and appreciating all the hard work and effort that went into the making of this book! I plan on trying to cook some of the most delicious foods with the ingredients that literally makes my mouth water just thinking about them~ This right here is what sets Emily apart from others in that not only does she offer unique story lines, an endless love, a sage that will live on…but a book that rivals many others for cuisine fit for a queen or king! Thank you, Emily and to her sister, Amy for the declaration of love and appreciation of your fans that only you two can deliver with this unique cookbook!
This cookbook is so much more than I expected. I absolutely love the artwork and the added bonus of the different associations and attributes of different foods. The recipes are for regular folks that are busy. I love that they take boxed foods (for example box cornbread) and make it into something special. The artwork is so impressive that although I have this book ob kindle, I believe I will enjoy it even more in book form. Well done and I highly recommend. Would make really nice gifts.
Only 4 stars because I haven't tried any of the recipes YET, but they sound easy and delicious, and the illustrations and little "kitchen witch" tidbits are amazing. Once I try a recipe or 6 I'll see about adjusting my review.
