DI Tessa Burns #1

Little Witness

Rate this book
They came in the dark. They took her parents. And now she is the only one who can save them.

Hidden away in an isolated cabin on the edge of her farm, seven-year-old Aisling Connolly shivers as the cold night air whistles through her thin jacket. It’s been two days since the men came, since her mammy told her to run like she’d never run before, to not look back. She hasn’t seen her parents since. And she’s terrified.

But when Aisling is finally found by the police, she knows instinctively she can trust Detective Tessa Burns. A former child-witness herself, Tessa understands what Aisling has been through, and that Aisling must remember everything she can about that terrible, dark night if she’s to save her parents. Something Tessa was unable to do for her own parents all those years ago.

As the little girl slowly starts to open up, Tessa uncovers much more than she’d bargained for – another murder, clearly a horrific warning to Aisling not to speak. But time is running out, and any hope of finding Aisling’s parents alive is rapidly fading. And Tessa must do everything in her power to ensure the little girl isn’t next…

An utterly gripping Irish police procedural filled with unexpected twists. Perfect for fans of Peter May, Lisa Regan, and Patricia Gibney.

In a Nutshell: A gripping police procedural set in Ireland. Great characters, interesting plot line, excellent use of the setting. Definitely recommend this series starter.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Plot Preview:
Detective Tessa Burns, as a former child witness, has always wanted to work in crime cases involving children. And now, she finally has a dream team ready, comprising Danny Murphy – a garda with a large body, a bigger temper, and a soft heart; Maggie Doolan – who doesn’t allow her cerebral palsy or her wheelchair to stand in the way of her job as a police liaison officer, and Pavlov – Maggie’s loyal dog.
When seven-year-old Aisling Connolly is found in an isolated cabin, she takes her time to trust the trio who saved her, and will try to save her missing parents. As little Aisling reveals what she knows of that awful night, Tessa and her team know that they have a tough task ahead, especially as the days go by and the body count go higher.
The story comes to us in the third person perspective of various characters.
I rarely pick up anything from the thriller set these days, as I am saturated with the amount of repetition and exaggeration that has become a hallmark of this genre. But when I read about this series, I knew I had to give it a go. I have a soft corner for police procedurals, and when I saw the author’s profile, I realised there was no way he would mislead the representation. I also have a soft corner for children, so seeing young Aisling get the titular role in a police procedural made me curious to see how the plot had been approached. I was not disappointed on either count.
Bookish Yays:
👏 The central trio of Tessa, Maggie and Danny: Perfect for this story! Their personalities are so well carved that you can almost guess how they will respond in each scene. I loved all three of them, and when you love the main characters, the story becomes that much easier to enjoy.
👏 Pavlov, Maggie’s dog: A great dog always deserves a separate Yay and a Woof of appreciation – Woof!
👏 The pacing: The story starts off a little slower as it seems to be establishing the backstories of Tessa and her team. Slow doesn’t mean boring in this case – I was completely invested in all three characters and learning what makes them function. As the plot moves ahead, so does the pacing progressively increase. I loved the steady adrenaline rush.
👏 The approach: The story seems to highlight the human side of police procedurals, with the cops’ feelings, opinions, and strategies playing a prime role in the proceedings. We do have the usual action scenes and forensic checks, but the latter has a minimal appearance, and the former is well-scattered throughout the book. I enjoyed how the narrative viewpoint is mainly of the cops, and how they work as a team.
👏 The author’s background making an impact: Author Shane Dunphy (who writes narrative nonfiction under his full name and crime novels using his initials) has worked as a child protection worker for 15+ years and has also been a journalist and documentary maker. It is no surprise then that the strongest features of this novel are the true-to-life approach and the children. He has his pulse right on Aisling’s behaviour, as well as on the issues faced by Tessa, Danny and Maggie in their childhood. The representation of the kids has a genuineness to it that is seen in few books.
👏 The add-on themes: The story highlights how childhood trauma affects adult behaviour, either positively or negatively. Each member of the detective team has issues in their past influencing their present behaviour. This is well-handled without going over the top. The plot also covers the pros and the problems of foster homes. Through Maggie’s cerebral palsy, we also see a bad-ass detective who demonstrates effectively how physical restrictions don’t hamper the spirit. I simply loved how realistically Maggie’s arc was presented.
👏 The Irish factor: For a change, the story is not just set in Ireland, but it makes use of the setting in every way. Right from the location to the atmosphere to the illegal poitín distilleries to the economic and political situation, you actually feel Ireland in this story.
👏 No romance (Yippee!): A High-five of gratitude to the author for not forcing a romantic arc in the plot! I am so tired of police procedurals that focus more on personal relationships than professional ones. (I hope I haven’t spoken too soon; I have yet to read the next book of this series!)
👏 The author’s note: So heartfelt that it won my heart! It enhances the impact of the novel.
Bookish Mixed Bags:
👀 The use of foreshadowing: I am not a big fan of foreshadowing, so this is more of a ME problem. But I must say, there were two instances when the augurs sent a chill down my spine.
👀 The Resolution: The final face-off (if I can call it that) between police and opponent was a bit too smooth to feel satisfactory. I don’t want to go into spoilers, but my head couldn’t buy the ease with which everything went so conveniently. It was not OTT with high-octane clashes (which is good) but implausible in its ‘uneventfulness’ (which is not so good). The epilogue makes up for this, giving us a creepy glimpse of what might come in the next book. I still liked the ending, but I feel like it could have done with a greater punch, literally and metaphorically.
All in all, this was a highly competent police procedural that offers a good combo of characters, plot, pacing and setting. I didn’t hate any part of it, and I loved most of it.
Definitely recommended to fans of this genre. I can’t wait to dive into Book Two and see what lies in store for Tessa’s team.
4.25 stars.
Little Witness is the gripping and hard to put down first book in a new series by S.A. Dunphy. YES!!!! I had the pleasure of having both the book and the audiobook, which made for a completely enjoyable reading experience. I was first introduced to S.A. Dunphy's books when I read his Boyle & Keneally Series. If you have not read those books, I highly recommend them. When I saw he had a new series coming out, I couldn't wait to get my hands (and eyes) on the first book in the series! S.A. Dunphy did not disappointed!
Seven-year-old Aisling Connolly is the only witness to what occurred the fateful evening there was a knock at the door. Hiding, cold and alone after her parents were taken, she recognizes something in Detective Tessa Burns that tells the young girl that she can trust her. Tessa can't help but feel for Aisling, she was once a child witness herself. Tessa and her team are all unique and have their own challenges. The team is made up of Tessa, Danny, and Maggie. Plus, there is Pavlov, the brilliant and loyal dog who is both a calming presence and courageous protector. Another reason to love this book is that this team is dedicated to helping children.
As the investigation kicks into high gear, there is a mounting sense of danger as it is obvious that there are those who will do anything to keep the truth from coming out. There are a lot of secrets and questions swirling around and then there is the mystery of who took Ash's parents and why.
I found this book to be a gripping, tension filled, well written and atmospheric police procedural. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions which had me feeling as if I was right there on the edge of the action as a silent observer. I enjoyed the characters and look forward to learning even more about them and seeing them working together in future books. What a great beginning to a new series!
The narrator of the audiobook did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life.
I look forward to reading the next book in the series!
Little Witness by S. A. Dunphy is quite a ride! It begins with a haunting crime scene and peaks your interest right away!
Detective Tessa Burns was raised in foster care due to her parents being murdered. She witnessed the murder. She knows how it feels to be a frightened and alone with no one she can trust. So, as an adult she dedicates her life to helping child victims.
When a 7 year old girl is found hiding and her parents missing, Tessa is determined to protect the girl and find her parents.
Tessa has a special team of police to help her. Her team is made up of two other foster care children from her past, Danny and Maggie. As adults they have their own strengths and weaknesses and Tessa knows how to put them to use.
I love that Maggie, who is a child advocate, uses a wheelchair and is a fierce, self defense teacher. She teaches other wheelchair users how to defend themselves. She also has a her own police dog that never leaves her side.
Danny is a giant of a man who constantly worries that his overwhelming size scares people. He has a quick temper but loves classical music.
The team goes through many intense and dangerous situations while trying to find the parents and protect the girl. All the while there is quite a humorous banter between the team. They made me laugh and kept me on my toes!
It is a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat right up until the end. And who can’t like a tough detective like Tessa, who wears Tenacious D shirts and listens to 80’s rock and roll!
TW: offensive language, violence and murder.
Many thanks to S. A. Dunphy and Bookouture Audio for the ARC, via NetGalley.
Tessa Burns is a Detective Inspector (DI) in Ireland, having received a promotion after rescuing a kidnapped child. She requested a special team devoted to working on crimes involving children and she got it. Her small team is quite interesting: Maggie, a woman who has cerebral palsy and is mostly confined to a wheelchair and Danny, a police officer with a short temper. And you can’t forget Maggie’s dog Pavlov, who becomes an integral part of the team. All three (humans) on the team spent their youth in foster care and “care homes”, which left them with psychological issues.
The main portion of the story involves a little girl named Aisling (“Ash”) whose parents are missing. She witnessed at least some of what went down at their home. Her parents are expert distillers, her father in particular being able to create liquor that could rival top brands. What happened to them and why? Ash is a great character herself, very smart and resourceful. Pavlov becomes a great comfort for her.
In addition to an interesting and complex mystery, the best part of the book for me was getting to know the three main characters. They all have a fascinating background, the foster home experience tying them together in many ways. I am really looking forward to reading more about this trio (or quartet, if you count Pavlov and I’m certain you should!).
I bounced between the audiobook and the ebook for this title, which was very convenient. The audiobook was beautifully narrated by Melanie MacHugh. Her voice and the accents she used transported me to Ireland.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance reader copy of this book and to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to an advance copy of this audiobook. All opinions are my own.
After reading the authors previous work the Boyle and Keneally series, I couldn’t wait to read the first book in a new series by the author involving newly promoted DI Tessa Burns after saving the life of 5-year-old Beltina Watson.
Set in Dublin. Tessa has been giving the powers to pick her own team at the Garda Siochana, opening a specialised unit helping children. Tessa is ex- army, so she picks her old friend from residential unit day Maggie who is in a wheelchair because she suffers from Cerebral palsy and her dog Pavlov, and Danny Murphy who has been arrested and on his way to prison when Tessa who thinks he can add something to his team.
The teams first case is of 7-year-old Aisling found in a shipping container on a farm in a village in County Monaghan. Her parents, Joe and Daisy Connolly have gone missing /abducted. The pair trade in the illegal distribution of Poitin. Other families who are in the trade have been similar taken and ended up dead.
I have a good feeling about this series, and I found this to be an excellent start to a new series. This is a well written story, and I liked the eclectic mix of the characters in the team. Each have their strengths and weaknesses but blend well to make a great team. This is a unputdownable read that kept me wanting more. I basically read it in the small hours of the morning. I can’t wait to read more of this series to see how it continues. 5 stars from me.
This is a Police Mystery Suspense, and this is the first book in the DI Tessa Burns series. I got pulled into this story right away, but this story is pace is slow moving before the first character then it picks up again. I had a little bit of trouble keeping myself into the story while it was slow moving, but I loved the story once it got going again. I cannot wait to pick up the next book in this series. I love the characters, and I love how different all the characters are. I did listen to the audiobook of this book, and the narrator was ok. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
3.5
I listened to the audio version which was read very clearly by Melanie McHugh who did not, thankfully, try to do different "voices" for men and women rather using intonation as a differentiation. Much better.
The story centres around the abduction/possible murder of Daisy and Joe Connolly leaving their little girl, Aisling, alone and terrified. The question is what have Joe and Daisy been doing on their Monaghan farm and who have they upset?
The job falls to newly-minted DI Tessa Burns and her team (consisting of Danny - who loses his temper a lot, Maggie - an FLO who is Tessa's best friend and generally uses a wheelchair/guided missile (you'll find out) plus Pavlov, Maggie's assistance dog/second only to wheelchair in deadliness.
What I liked about this story was that even though it was a little farfetched at times it tripped along at a fast pace, was full of action rather than introspection and had a satisfying conclusion. Also good to have a kick-ass wheelchair user. I think the line about if you don't know what a person with any differing abilities -physical/mental is capable of then just ask, really resonated. I'm paraphrasing.
What I didn't like was the too-detailed back stories. If this is to be a series I'd have liked things to evolve naturally. I know this is a plus for some readers and its a purely personal preference. There was a lot of swearing but I don't really mind that. Some people might.
So, in the main, a decent start to what I assume will be a series of more than 2. I'd be interested to see how the team progresses.
A cracking opener. We atart by learning about the history of Tess and how her team comes together. They are protecting a little girl whos parents are taken by unknown gang.
The narrator was spot on good usage of accents . High quality. Although a fairly complex story it was self contained and i look forward ti the bext instalement.
I loved the team characters And learning of their hustory. Story was skillfully told and narrated. Full of axtion from the start and a carrot that hopefully eventually we might find out who killed tess's dad.
A new DI series taking place in Ireland. DI Tessa Burns has just been promoted & starts a new team. She recruits her fellow cop & best friend, Maggie ….and her dog. Plus, a new guy she takes a chance on. These three (plus dog), are sent in to investigate the disappearance of Ash’s parents. There’s a lot of enemies, including mobsters , & in general a lot of bad people. I liked Tessa & Maggie ( & Pavlov), not sure about Danny, yet. There was quite a bit of action, literally from the beginning. Pace was also good. I would definitely give the next book a try.
Detective Tessa Burns has to gain the trust of seven-year-old Aisling after her parents turned up missing. Why the child was able to run away and stay hidden for a couple of days is a mystery to Tessa and her fellow officers. As she slowly brings Aisling out of her shell, Tessa hopes that the child will be able to provide any evidence as to what happened to Aisling's parents.
Aisling did not speak at first. However, the more Tessa is able to get Aisling to open up, the more Tessa discovers. In fact, there was a murder most recently, and Tessa fully understands the child's fear. Keeping Aisling safe is just as important to Tessa as to discovering the killer and what has happened to her parents.
This first book in the DI Tessa Burns series was an excellent read. In fact, having this book as an audiobook was quite enjoyable. The series is set in Ireland and the accents and voices really made this story come to life.
This story was definitely intriguing, especially as the reason for Aisling's parents disappearance was discovered. Also, I loved the characters in this book. Not only were Tessa and Aisling strong protagonists, I also loved wheelchair-bound Maggie, a family liaison officer and her dog Pavlov.
I loved this book, as well as the second book in the series, Only the Children, which is released alongside this book, The Little Witness. These enjoyable reads leave me eager for the next book in the series.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Well, it was an interesting read. Following the DI Tessa Burns while she tries to uncover the truth about the disappearance of a couple. At first, it was a bit confusing to follow with the different POV, scene change. But in the end, all ends well, I'd say.
Review:
Reading the first in a new police procedural series is a lot like beginning a new relationship. At the start you don't know the back story, you get to know all the little foibles and hear about the experiences that have made the lead detective into the person they are today. DI Tessa Burns isn't your typical DI. She has excellent taste in vintage cars, even better taste in music, and most certainly will not be called 'boss'. I'd quite like to go for a pint or two with her. But, I digress.
Little Witness has all the ingredients to cause a stir in the crime thriller market and arrive with a bang on bookshelves. It's fresh and exciting, with a plot that digs deep into Irish tradition and contains an array of colourful characters that will make your toes curl. Right at the centre are Tessa and her team, a trio of expressively written personalities you are rooting for from the start.
It's a good job the second book in this series is published simultaneously; I need another fix of Team Burns!
I really loved this Irish police procedural, and I am so excited about this new series from S A Dunphy, as I have loved all of his previous books too.
The story is about little seven year old Aisling, whose parents Daisy and Joe have been abducted. DI Tessa Burns and her team set out to help Aisling and find her parents. Will they be successful? I really liked Tessa; she is a badass, fiery woman, yet she is also caring and compassionate.
I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook, as it was amazing.
I loved this book so much, and I am just about to read Book 2 in the series, which I really look forward to. I highly recommend this book, and all books by this author, as they are all fantastic!
LITTLE WITNESS by S.A. Dunphy is narrated by Melanie MacHugh and the series starter for DI Tessa Burns, a member of the Irish Garda (police).
I requested this title because I do enjoy a good police procedural, and this was definitely a solid detective story with characters I was rooting for from the start. 4.5 Stars!
Tessa Burns was a child witness when her parents were killed and she has worked herself into her dream job to focus on cases with children. She brings in a team to help and when their first case involves a little girl whose parents have gone missing, the entire team works with little Aisling, or Ash, to try and find them before it is too late.
I felt like I was watching a gritty BBC detective show! I love those, so this was a great fit for me. The narration was wonderful and added to the immersive experience with the Irish accents. Often series starters have to give a lot of info to set up the characters and can sometimes be a bit slow for it. This was not slow to me at all! In fact, I felt like this story was well paced and kept me engaged throughout. I loved how one of the team has Cerebral Palsy and she brings a vital component to the group where the other member is a huge hulk of a guy with a heart.
Clearly I am all about the characters in this, but the mystery and chase was definitely engaging too! I am excited to keep watching this author and stick with this Irish Detective series.
Thank you @netgalley & @bookouture audio for this advanced audiobook and letting me share my thoughts! This will be published on February 11th, so keep your eyes open for this one.
Little Witness was an Irish crime fiction by S.A. Dunphy and it was brilliant. I listened to the audiobook version that was narrated by Melanie MacHugh. She’s a favorite of mine and was perfect for the story.
DI Tessa Burns has picked her own team to specialize in child crimes. Each one is unique and brings special to this team. This was fast paced and well written.
S.A. Dunphy is one of my favorite authors and I highly recommend this one.
I cannot wait to see where this group goes! I love the issues these characters have - discussed supportively, encouraged to heal and adjust. The best feature is a woman with physical limitations utilizing her disability to kick butt. I could not applaud her enough.
Intense, fast paced and to the point - great start to a new series!
Such a good book. Fast paced, twists and turns.
Tessa burns manages to turn a bunch of “broken” officers into the perfect team. Each member’s back story is explored in time, and explains why, for them, their job is important. Each new development left me wanting more.
Such a good first story in what, I’m sure, will be an amazing series.
Little Witness opens with DS Tessa Burns saving a young girl who has been kidnapped. It also results in her killing some members of a terrorist gang. She is called in to see the Police Commissioner, who congratulates her and asks her what she wants to do with her career. She becomes DI Tessa Burns and she assembles her own team, a team that will specialize in cases involving children and vulnerable adults. She brings people that she knew from her time in foster care, those with specialized skill sets and they are quickly put to the test.
This is the first book in the DI Tessa Burns series and what a great start it was. Tessa is a great character. Her parents were killed when she was young and she lived in care homes. She became friends with some of the kids who were weaker and picked on showing her compassion and sense of fairness. She brought that into her role while working with the Garda, as well as her number one thing, to be kind. Her team also consists of Maggie as a family liaison officer and her service dog Pavlov and well as DS Danny Murphy, a rather large man, but kind and gentle with one flaw, he has a hair trigger temper. The case they are called in on has to do with a couple who make illegal alcohol. They are taken and their daughter Aisling is found hiding. She is frightened and there is suspicion that she is in danger. I loved how the team rallied around to keep her safe. This case was convoluted and difficult to figure out, especially when there were more victims. The description of the murderers gave no indication of who they could be and their faces were described as made from putty. This book was gripping, twisty and chilling. There were times it moved slower, building up, then it zoomed forward. I enjoyed this book, the team that Tessa put together, the procedures and clues they used to solve the crime and the development of the story. I enjoyed my read/listen of this book, narrated by Melanie MacHugh. She does a great job bringing the characters to life and building the story. I will definitely be looking for more books in this series.
Book Title: Little Witness (D.I. Tessa Burns0
Series: D.I. Tessa Burns Book #1
Author: S.A. Dunphy (Shane Dunphy)
Narrator: Melanie MacHugh
Publisher: Bookouture Audio
Genre: Mystery Thriller
Story starts when seven-year-old Aisling Connolly is rescued by DI Tessa Burns.
Aisling is indeed a little witness as she saw her parents being abducted.
Terra immediately understands the trauma she is experiencing as Terra is former child-witness herself. Soon Aisling reveals some of what happened but is also fearful of being in danger if she reveals too much.
Tessa decided to forms a team of experts who are ‘somewhat’ misfits:
Danny is a detective however got in a situation of being sent to prison for beating up a suspect.
Tessa arranges for him to serve his parole under her serve s
Maggie - Tessa has known Maggie since she was sixteen and Maggie was ten. Maggie suffers from cerebral palsy and although can walk a little; for the most part is confined to wheelchair. However, she not only knows how to defend herself but is an excellent instructor on self-defense for those with a handicap. Plus you will love her service-dog Pavlov!
I started this as I was pleased to find a new great female detective series!
I currently love and follow: Melinda Leigh’s - Bree Taggert, Lisa Regan’s-Josie Quinn,
Linda Castillo’s- Kate Burkholder and James Patterson’s-Lindsey Boxer.
I want to add Shane Dunphy’s Tessa Burns to my list; I will give Book #2 Only the Children a try. I did like this team of misfit as well as their concern for children who have or are in a violent situation.
I just am not a fan of profanity and found that f-bomb was overuse. There are so many words that can be used; it certainly seems lazy as well to use the same nasty word over and over and over!
I did enjoy the audiobook narrator’s Irish brogue!😊
Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for granting me this early audiobook.
I really enjoyed this detective thriller and am looking forward to future books in this series.
While I loved DI Tessa, the real MVP is Maggie and her dog, Pavlov. I’ll probably catch some flack for saying this, but I’m getting a bit tired of every book in the past 5 years having a gay couple and a beautiful redhead thrown in. They typically are some thrown in side characters, but for some reason, those boxes need to be checked in every thriller and romcom.
ANYWAY- what I love about this book is that it brings a differently-abled person (Cerebral Palsy) into the picture AND that person can kick some ass in a wheelchair; not to mention she has a service dog that saves the day a couple of times.
While there is a child involved in this book, there are no uncomfortable details about abuse or anything of that nature, so if that’s a trigger for you, you’re pretty much in the clear.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and would be happy to read book 2 of the series.
Narrator- one thing that could be improved is the narrator’s voice when speaking g male parts. The tone doesn’t change much, which makes it hard to figure out a different person is speaking at that time.
When Aisling Connelly is found cold and cowering after her parents are kidnapped, Detective Inspector is Tessa Burns is called to help. A former child witness herself, Tessa hopes to be able to help Aisling feel comfortable speaking to them fast enough for them to find her missing parents. As the case takes Tessa and her team down a rabbit hole of illegal distilling operations, they have to race against the clock if they want to find the little girl's parents in time.
I really enjoyed this book! It jumps right into the action and keeps your attention the entire time. It does an amazing job of giving you the detailed feel of a police procedural without getting so wrapped up in minutia that it becomes tedious to read. In a similar way, this author manages to walk the line between believable action and off the wall, unrealistic, Michael Bay style insanity. You get so much action with this one, but it's all very grounded and believable. I absolutely loved it!
I loved this book. I cannot wait for more in this series. TW for: Abduction, Torture, Cult-ish Community
The author sets up the two main characters so well, showing their motivations/fears/pasts. The third character I would consider more of a side character, but she is also given a decent amount of the same. The work that went into making compelling side-characters throughout shines through.
This story had a deeper story that will unravel through the series, and I loved it. I have so many questions, I can't wait for the answers.
This story is very compelling, and while parts of it are very tragic, it has an overall hope to it that is. Strong themes are found family, second chances, and others seeing in you what you can't see in yourself.
I highly recommend this book.
Thanks to Bookouture and netgalley for this ARC. Another new author for me and very impressed with the first book. Tessa Burns is given the authority to select her own task force team looking into solving cases involving children.. when Aisling Conolley is left for days cold, hungry and hiding in their farm, after a man had taken her mom and dad away. When tessa finds her, she understands exactly what aisling will be going through as she has been in that same pisition herself.. she encourages aisling to remember every little detail about what happened that night. Where are aislings mom and dad? Why have they been taken?...... This book certainly kept my attention, twists, and lots of suspects. Highly addictive, i loved it cant wait to start book 2
I love it when a detective and her team are not the usual kind of team you would expect in the police force. Detective Tessa is one who does not shy away from danger. When she goes for it, she goes for it. It sometimes feels a bit like a case of diving in and thinking later but she certainly achieves the goals she has set for herself.
After that one case where she went for it like a true hero she recognizes where her forte lies. And she is going to make certain she is the right woman for the job. She asked for one thing, which she received, and she chooses the team she wants to work with. I can assure you this team is one-of-a-kind, but it is not possible to not love them.
The first case together it's not an easy one and they find themselves more than once, eye to eye with one or more villains.
Tessa is the boss, but she wants to be a boss who wants to work alongside her team. She wants them to see her as a companion although she still holds the reins. She knows how she wants to lead her team and when needed she shows a very compassionate side.
So yes, this is a very promising start do a new series and I am happy I can start reading part two straight away.
This book is very suspenseful but also emotional and very compassionate and human. The author has created some great characters and reminds us that criminals use every means to try to get what they want most, which is power and money of course.
Five stars for this remarkable story.
Thank you
"To her horror, her gun only clicked. For the first time in her career, both in the army and in the police force, Tessa's weapon had misfired."
The narrator, Melanie MacHugh, delivers a gripping police procedural with compelling characters. Using a variation of inflections.
The mystery involving mobsters unfolds with unexpected twists, offering moments of laughter amidst the suspense. The story introduces two incredible heroines, and I absolutely adore them both. Maggie and Tessa. Maggie's character, with Cerebral Palsy and her loyal service dog Pavlov, is truly intriguing. Their unique backstory, as far as I've discovered, is captivating, and I can't wait to learn more about both Maggie and Tessa. Trust me, these ladies are anything but damsels – they're a force to be reckoned with! While the pace starts off a bit slow, rest assured it picks up and becomes more gripping as the story unfolds.
If you love police procedurals, don't miss this captivating Irish crime mystery!
A very special thanks to Bookouture Audio for the gifted copy.
A gripping and brilliantly conceived book Tessa is an amazing detective with a great team. I liked them all, Maggie, Danny, and the adorable dog. Story unfolds at an intriguing pace. Daisy's point of view added an additional intensity. Aishling is a sweetheart and a brave kid. Looking forward to reading more of the series. Highly recommended
