Mack McRooney is retired from military special ops, but there’s one final mission he has to take on — catch the saboteur targeting his brother-in-law’s firefighting team...even if that means becoming a firefighter himself. Partnering with state trooper Wynona Wells, however, was not part of the plan. Mack and Wynona are fighting their fiery attraction to one another and a deadly saboteur. And if they lose this fight, they might just also lose their lives...

Fantastic conclusion to the series. Throughout the series, the hotshot team has been plagued by a saboteur who has caused many dangerous "accidents." Though the field of suspects has diminished, team leader Braden Zimmer is frustrated by the inability to identify them. As a last resort, he asks his brother-in-law Mack to join the team and investigate.
Mack recently retired from a career in military special ops. While deciding what to do with the rest of his life, he trains as a hotshot and takes a place in the team. Mack is suspicious of everyone, including local state trooper Wynona. He feels she is hiding something. Wynona is equally distrustful of Mack. He isn't law enforcement and has no business interfering with her investigation.
With their mutual distrust, neither is happy about the sparks of attraction that affect them. They fight against them, but ultimately, their feelings are too strong to resist. However, each has baggage from their past, making it difficult to open their hearts. I enjoyed seeing them get past each other's walls and take a chance at love.
The suspense of the story was terrific. Mack has a target on his back from his first day as a hotshot. Only his quick reflexes saved him from being crushed by a falling tree. Wynona also finds herself in the crosshairs when someone shoots at her and Mack. There are scenes from the saboteur's point of view where we see his frustration at Mack and Wynona's ability to escape his attacks. There are also hints of his motivation. The attacks intensify as they begin to close in on his identity. The final confrontation was a nail-biter and kept me glued to the pages until it was over.
The epilogue was an excellent wrap-up for the books and series. I liked catching up with the couples from earlier books.
Finally! The book I have been waiting for! The saboteur is revealed at last and this book really is the finale of the series. The entire series is definitely worth reading as it kept me engaged and biting my nails as one hotshot firefighter’s life was threatened after another. In this latest book, the firefighter under the gun (pun intended) is Mack McRooney, a hotshot with the mission of uncovering the identity of the saboteur once and for all. He has retired from his special ops career in the military, so who better to catch a slimy snake who is setting booby traps for the hotshots? Once he arrives at Northern Lakes, Mack is targeted along with state trooper Wynona Wells, a daring investigator who runs toward danger and isn’t afraid to die. The two of them set some sparks of their own off, so the book does include some steam, but it is not the main focus of the story. There are a lot of twists and red herrings, making the book more enjoyable for a mystery buff like me. I liked the realism of the characters and the quick pace of the plot, but mostly, I really liked finding out the identity of the perpetrator who has kept me riveting to all twelve books. The ways he attacks the hotshots is nothing less than brilliant and very original and I loved every minute I spent with this team who became like friends to me. Last Mission is the twelfth and final story in the Hotshot Heroes series but can be read as a stand alone however I suggest reading the previous stories for the character and story background but also for the pure entertainment of the series. In this story, we find out who the saboteur is that has been targeting the Hotshots as well as watching the budding relationship between Mack McRooney and Trooper Wynona Wells. Mack and Wynona are each being targeted as they try to uncover who the saboteur is and while trying to keep each other at arms length, they realize that they must stay close to protect each other. Both are afraid of losing anyone else close to them so they are fighting the attraction but love proves stronger than fear. This is an amazing conclusion to the series with a lot of action, engaging characters and love of family and the heart.
This is the 12th and the last book in the Hotshot series! I hate to see this series end, but Lisa wrapped it up nicely. Each of these books have romance and suspense.
State trooper Wyona Wells is on the case. She is out to find the saboteur but incomes Mack McRooney Retired military special ops. Mack is here to make sure that he finds the saboteur that is out for his brother in-laws team. These two definitely do not want to work together. They also have an instant attraction to each other. If they don’t figure out how to work together, they may both just find themselves dead !
Another great Hotshot book full of mystery and romance.
Thank you, Lisa, Childs and Kimberly, Bradford Scott for this ARC in return for my honest review.
Lots of folks to keep track of but the Hotshots are in trouble. Lots of intrigue and interpersonal...let’s call it strife! Mack McRooney is in town to help out his brother-in-law find a saboteur trying to kill his Hotshot team and their significant others. Mack has issues with his family as well so he has some fancy footwork to let his family know how he feels, and then track down a killer. And Trooper Wynona Wells throws a monkey wrench into his very ordered life, but only in the best way imho. Fast moving and great characters.
Whew this book was a trip so much go to unpack with this one. There was so much going that it'll keep the readers hooked till the very end. I mean their lives were non stop in danger and if it wasn't one thing it was another. But then again Mack has always had a target on his back. I liked seeing that attraction between Mack and Wynona. Overall I enjoyed seeing how this book and series wrapped up. I'm just noticing that I'm missing a book here and there and jumping around when it comes to the series. So I'm going to have to go back and check those out because this series is pretty good.
This is the last book in the 12 book series. I enjoyed the fire scenes and the mystery portion. I am not a fan of language and spicy romance scenes, but I will review this mentioning that those two factors exist, but will rate according to the suspense and mystery portions which were very interesting and keeps you on the edge of your seats. I love a good mystery and it definitely fit that bill! I received an ARC copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Book 12 in the series and I have enjoyed all 12 books. Mack McRooney comes in to help the Hotshots trying to find the saboteur and he teams up with Trooper Wyona Wells and neither trust each other and attempts are made on both their lives. Will Mack be able to stop the saboteur before it is to late.
Holy Smokes , talk about a last mission for sure, if you haven't followed the series, I would just so you have all the info on the Hotshots Involved. This last mission was action packed til the very end , when we finally find out who had been targeting the Hotshots and why . Plus some romance thrown in, a great read and ending to this Smokin Hot series .
Last in the series, not only the one setting fires is revealed, we also get a fiery hot romance between special ops, Mack and the state trooper, Wynona. Not to give away any spoilers, this is a good romance with lots of mystery and suspense as they find their guy.
I am so sad the series has ended! I’ve read all 12 of the books and become so familiar with all the hotshots. This is a great conclusion and we finally find out the identity of the saboteur. I’ll be looking forward to a new series from Lisa Childs.
Amazing last book in the series. I could not put it down. A must read as are the rest of the books. I haven’t read all of them. I plan at a later date to read the rest.
This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the 12th book in the Hotshot Heroes series. I have read all the other books in the Hotshot Heroes series before picking up this book. I felt this book wrapped up everything so well, and I did not see the big reveal coming and who was behind everything. I really enjoyed this book, and I could not put this book down. Loved it. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.
In this suspenseful series finale, Mack, a retired special ops soldier, joins the hotshot team to uncover a saboteur. Distrust and mutual attraction complicate his relationship with state trooper Wynona. As they grow closer, they face escalating attacks from the saboteur, leading to a tense final confrontation. The epilogue provides a satisfying conclusion, revisiting characters from earlier books.
