Court of Broken Bonds #3

Heir to Dreams and Darkness

Rate this book
Lightning raced over my skin as we touched. It cascaded through the room, sparking every candle to life. I would not let death and ruin take him from me. I was not ready for this to end.

The demon Lilyth has returned. With an army of shadows at her back, she claims all magic as her own, threatening to drain all light and life from the world. To stand against her, Max must unite rival gods and kingdoms that have warred for centuries. It seems impossible, but Max is not alone. Danger has forged his friends into a new family and bound him to an ice-breathing dragon. Most powerful of all is his passion for Simion. Possessed by the burning magic of the phoenixes, Simion is more heated, more unpredictable. And his desire blazes brighter than ever. But Max’s bonds of love make him vulnerable. Lilyth will take anything—or anyone—from him, to get what she craves. If he hopes to defeat her, Max must be ready for any sacrifice. Can Max and Simion’s passion survive the war ahead? Or will the destruction of the world they know tear them apart?

Full of spicy romance, heartbreak and epic action.

I would like to thank NetGalley and Second Sky for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

ahhhh I'm very much in the minority here, but unfortunately this series is just a big old miss for me! I really tried, but AFTER reading all 3 books back to back, it turns out that Max and I were simply not compatible. For THE main character, he just refused to sit in ANY power, consistently wearing a face made of waterfalls because the plot basically read like a rinse and repeat of: losing one loved one, only to find another...then losing that one, but surprise another comes into play, but then that one is also horrifically killed in some way. And on. And on. And on.

That's just the grief piece. There's the whole King bit. The magic bit. The lover bit. There's all this tension (in all the above aspects) but none of it satisfying because this series was basically just a death march for anyone/anything/flora or fauna affiliated with Max, and also (in the previous books) a bunch of useless name calling (which i'm still salty about because of how stupid in general THAT all was, so i'll add it to my list of grievances here).

Now, I'm gonna take this moment to straight up cry for MYSELF because myyy gawd LOOK AT THAT BOOK COVER!!! I love it! I cry because I really wanted more development in their relationship so it would have given me a romance I could sink my teeth into. but no. Just Simion looking hawt, a bevy of quick kisses, Iloveyous and delayed passion every 3rd chapter. There was some (i would have loved more) deliciousness, and yes ofc I do understand that loving is hard when there's an apocalyptic demon to deal with. But if you splash Fourth Wing, A Court of Thorns and Roses and The Serpent and the Wings of Night, I expected "Hello, Feyre darling" and spontaneous combustion.

But that's just me. literally. i'm like the only one this didn't hit for loools!

In any case, I do think that a lot of people will enjoy this book and while I can accept that this series is simply not for me, I am very happy that BA has a loyal readership who will no doubt gobble this all up and ask for more! I'm glad i stuck with this series though, if only for the closure, and the epilogue was really sweet! but i'm still searching for an Alderson title that blows me away and hopefully something will catch my eye in the future so we'll see!

‘I already told you, my love. I won’t leave you. Not now, not tomorrow. Not ever again.’

Ahhhh, the end of the line...or is it? First thing's first, Mr Alderson, spinoffs WHEN? I specifically require an Aura spinoff, but I'll take whatever I can get. There's so much spinoff material, surely something can be done!!

Ok now, I was looking forward to the war and even more battles which this book delivered. Max and his friends are in a constant state of chaos, and you as the reader never know who's going to make it out alive, considering the author's track record of making Max lose everyone important to him.

And does he? You'll have to read to find out, sorry. But know that I was not ready. That is all.

There were some twists I didn't see coming at all and now I feel the urge to check books 1 and 2 for clues. I was literally so shocked at one that my jaw fell open, if that's not the best endorsement I don't know what is.

The romance was romancing, even during the hardest of times. Simion was so sweet to Max and you can really feel their relationship develop throughout the book. I wouldn't mind a little novella featuring them at some point in the future, if we don't get a longer spinoff.

I liked the time travel aspect since that's one of my favourite tropes. I didn't get the magic system expansion I was hoping for, but I do think I understand it a bit better.

The writing also just keeps getting better and better, so I'm sad that this is the end (for now, ahem).

I'll absolutely be checking out Ben Alderson's other books, and you, the person reading this, can give this a try since the trilogy is now complete, you can binge all three books!!! What are you waiting for? Go and do it!!!

Thank you to NetGalley and Second Sky for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I said this in my review for the previous book in this trilogy, Heir to Frost and Storm, but one of the things that stands out the most to me is the remarkable amount of growth that author Ben Alderson has shown both from the first time I picked up one of his stories and just in this series alone. His writing has grown by leaps and bounds, and it has been so wonderful to follow his career over these past few years.

In Court of Broken Bonds, Max has gone from the mistreated servant of a royal family to a miraculous (if shunned) mage to the heir of an entire kingdom as the part-Dryad child of the previous ruler of the North. Along the way, he's escaped an unwanted marriage bond and found true love with fellow mage Simion, and created a ragtag family for himself. Now, he finds himself facing down the demon Lilyth, the original mother of monsters, in a race against time to find four conduits capable of controlling (or protecting) those creatures and their magic.

This was a solid buildup of the plot from the previous books. The Big Bad was truly big and bad and potentially world-ending, and pieces from the last two books were well woven into the current plot. There was the fun (and horrifying) addition of time travel, which is always a difficult topic to balance even for seasoned writers, and Alderson manages it well. The magic system even gets a fun little upgrade with the addition of phoenix sorcerers - can I hope we'll get a spinoff/sequel story about their own magic in the future?
And the characters! Max did not start this series out as my favorite, I'll admit, and he had his frustrating moments in this book, but he's so genuinely intent on saving everyone around him even at the cost of his own life that you can't help but love him. He has the quintessential hero's journey, and he deserves every bit of the happy ending he can get. But oh does Simion have my entire heart in this series. His loyalty to Max and his sister and his people, his heroism, and his unfailing belief that those around him will do what is right... He's the best. Though Leska proves to be stiff competition. She's the badass, grumpy sibling that Max needs to kick him into gear.

Overall, this was a delightful end to a fun trilogy, with enough twists and turns to keep me entertained. And I love a dragon story set in a queernormative world. I'm excited to see what Alderson comes up with next, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for that spinoff/sequel.

Would just like to say that overall it was a very nice quick mini series. I definitely enjoyed reading the book, overall it covered really good elements of magic and the origin of events, and in my opinion, the transfer of magic during the book was really well done and explained. Unfortunately, my grievances with the book fall with the main character. Max as a main character had a lot of character flaws from the jump. His undying love for his parents brought upon him so much more dread than he needed to experience, the way he voiced his concern for his parents to his literal enemies just made it really hard to feel bad when they were ultimately used against him. Max was really just a big coward, unable to come to terms with being the “chosen” of the story. He really wasn’t able to overcome the pressure and anxieties of his power as most lead characters would normally figure out around the final book. Max spent more time lying to everyone around him than he did actually helping those around him. I can understand the fear that goes into his lying, but the pros to him lying never outweighed the cons of his lying in my opinion which quite literally cause him to have to ultimately give up his memories.

Side characters really were the driving force of this series, without Camron, Beatrice, Leska, and Simion, Max would just not have been able to do much of anything. As supporting characters, they were driving the story, more telling max what to do than waiting for Max to make a decision, which was fine until they all looked to Max to save the day because now we have a situation when our protagonist is pretty unable to make decisions for himself and others around him and he self-sabotaged himself and the characters around him. That being said I think the portrayal of these supporting characters was excellent, Simion definitely could have been less gullible, but I can understand him being lost to his love for Max.

Overall, pretty enjoyable book if you can get past Max having terrible internal struggles that leave you upset with him. The portrayal of magic really brings the spark of fantasy to life and the relationship Max has with those around him does make up for other losses of the series to make it an enjoyable read.

Okay I really wanna deep dive into a million things about this book but just after closing the last page I need time to think about it and come back.
I’m angry and sad for Max.
I know not all endings have to be 100% happy and I understand real life cannot be that way but for poor Max he should have got that ending without the random loss of his memories and the crippling anxiety he now faces everyday.
Ben did not need to leave the Elaine thing there either. I think that’s what lacks here. An actual solid happy ending. These characters didn’t go through trauma after trauma the way the author constantly assaulted them to not get some definite happiness. For me I liked the books & completely hated the ending.

*Thank you to the author and publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review.*

My feelings about this book are very similar to my feelings about the rest of this series:

The whole series, and especially this book would greatly benefit from more editing, especially for sentence structure and syntax. The magic system is an integral part of the plot and yet the reaches and limitations of that magic are not very clear. Neither is the understanding of what exactly Lilyth is, where she comes from, and how her power works.

However, the payoff from Max and Simion finally getting their chance has kept me coming back to this series despite the work it needs. I have said it before and I will say it again, Ben writes increible relationship dynamics and tension. Every time Simion calls Max “my love”, my heart grows three sizes, the whole series is worth it just for that.

Thank you first and foremost to Ben Alderson, SecondSky Books & NetGalley for the free eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Where to begin, A Court of Broken Bonds has captured me and my attention since the very first book. I have adored Max from the beginning and this bond between him and Simion has held my heart in its hands from the moment they met.

Book Three... the final book, the finale... something I wanted desperately to read but never wanted to end. This book, much like the previous two, broke my heart and made me cheer and laugh in so many ways. I have shed tears of joy and sadness in near equal measure. I will be forever changed by this book.

“As one we are great, as few we fail” - great spin on “United we stand, divided we fall.”

Maximus – From the moment I met you in Book 1 I knew you were going to be special. Just how special I had no idea. From one book worm to another I love you, so much. Your love of literature, books, knowledge has made it so easy to slip into your shoes. Watching you mature and grow over 3 books has been an honour.

In this book you took up the mantle of protector, of mage, of King in a way made me love you and nearly hate you in equal measure. Your need to do everything on your own made me ache, I cried for you when you lost so much and yet still pushed on, pushed further, did what you thought was right to protect your world. The things you were willing to give up, to lose, in order to make things right were... incredible and painful and watching you make those decisions, mostly on your own, was nearly heartbreaking. I am so glad you got your happily ever after with Simion.

Simion - every word you speak, every action you take makes me love you just that little bit more. From the moment you arrived in Book 1 to who you are becoming now in Book 3, I am so happy & honoured to have been on this journey with you and Max.

"Because *you* are my passion, Max." Simion! You beautiful man!

“Power is not in what we have, but what we do” - chapter 13

These are two of my favourite quotes from our dear Simion. The silent strength, the beautiful love hold for Max and the life you two build for and with each other is absolutely incredible. You know Max so well and your ability to work with him even when he insists on trying to do everything alone just makes my heart swell with love. We should all be so lucky to have such an amazing partner as you.

Oh Leska - I hated you at first even if I understood your grief and pain, but you have become one of my favourite characters and your relationship with Max has grown so beautifully. I hate the pain you've gone through this book but oh, oh the strength and determination that has been wrought through it is incredible. I will never forget you Leska, you have been an amazing character to get to and grow to love. Thank you for everything.

Beatrice – As Max's best friend and Simion's sister you've had a front row seat for so much of this. You've lost and gained so much but stayed as true to yourself as possible. I love you so much you beautiful badass.

The Story – ho-ly shit what a roller coaster. When I started this series I never would've imagined that it would have ended like this. Time travel very often makes my brain hurt and while it did on occasion in this book I love how it was explained, I love how it was made possible, and as heartbreaking as they were, I love that travelling into and “messing” with time had consequences. And not easy ones either.

The search for Celia, the search for the conduits and the ultimate battle all slotted into place in such a way that it all made sense to me within the world of Aldian and the magic and beings that Lilyth created. Do I wish that the antagonist had a different name? Maybe a little bit but she was still incredible.

I never wanted this book to end, I wanted to stay in Max and Simion's world forever, to learn more about the new Sorcerers and what happens after the final battle in more detail.

I loved the time jump at the end, being able to see what Max and Simion are up to so many years later, how they're dealing with Max's condition just all of it was a lovely surprise.

I would absolutely read another 3 or another dozen novels set in this world, it wouldn't even need to follow Max and Simion, maybe a book about Beatrice and Elaine? Or others we've met and learned to love (or hate) along the way.

As sad as I am to see the series end for the first time, I can't imagine not re-reading at some point because I love these books so much, I love these characters so much and I have loved their story from start to finish and every happy and heartbreaking moment in between.

“It is my life’s greatest pleasure to be by your side, to help you through the maze of your unknowing. And I vow to always be here, always be at your side, always be the one to show you just how healing love can be in the face of uncertainty.”

4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Characters
• Max
Have you ever watched a movie where the main character chats or does something at a crucial moment instead of doing his job? Yup, that’s him.

Halfway through this book I still plan to write a review about the characters in this book as characters who are too good to be true, like there are no outstanding flaws, they are too fictional and heroic, there are no real humans like that. However, when I got to the part where Max and Simion were going to take The Shield from the mountain, that's when I felt very annoyed with Max who was too slow to think even though the situation was critical. Then from there, I was also annoyed when during the battle with Lilith, Max talked TOO much and was easily distracted. Like, please stop talking ffs 😭

• Simion
He’s just too good to be true. A walking green flag. Fiction man. I feel like there is no real person like him. I really want to know what's on his mind. I hope we can see what's inside his mind, what happened when he made plans behind Max's back, and other stories that aren't explained further from his POV.

The Plot

I feel that in this book there are a lot of plot holes that are not explained and could be explained further. Like for example, who led The South when Camron was dead and Max was still in The North? Did the twins took the lead of The South straight away? Where is The Twins' mother? Who led The North when The Queen died? When Simion became king, did they continue The Claim after what Max went through while following that tradition?

There are also many plots that are not explained further even though when they were initially written, the plots looked like they promised an exciting story. Is Jameson alive? Why were Jameson and Elaine initially written as if they were important characters but in the end, they weren't explained further? We don't even know whether Jameson is alive or not. We also don't know the ending of Elaine's story. Will there be a companion book or sequel? Is the story meant to be an open ending? Because in my opinion, if it's an open ending, then it's a bad open ending. What about Celia Hawthorne? For 3 books they searched for Celia, but after finding her, that's it, we don't hear anything else about her.

During the war, I REALLY didn't understand why they only used two conduits (the crown and the scepter) and not the other two (the gauntlet and the shield), even though they went through many obstacles to get these two things. Well, they used the other two but only at the end!

I was originally going to give this story a 4.5/5, but what happened to Leska at the end made me decide to give it a 4/5 🤐

But after all, this is a great book. The plot twist is unpredictable and makes the reader immersed in it. I highly recommend it, because I rarely find fictional stories about kingdoms, arranged marriages, soul marks with dragons, mages, phoenixes and also with M/M relationship!

"Power is not in what we have, but what we do."

I'm this third and final book in the Court of Broken Bonds series, Max, Simion and others have to prepare to fight a world-consuming demon that's quickly approaching, and doing so required uniting the North and the South, which have been at war for longer than anyone can remember. Will they survive, or will Lilyth kill off another planet, like she has others before?

The publisher promised a story "full of spicy romance, heartbreak and epic action"—and they weren't wrong! There was lots of epic action scenes, battles and monsters and magic. I can't even begin to count the amount of times I felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest because of things that happened to the various characters! And there was definitely more spice in this book than the first two combined, so be warned!

One thing that caught me off guard with this book is how funny it is! Max and Simion made me laugh out loud so many times from the start, with their sarcasm and snarky replies! But I also love their love for each other—every time Simion called Max "my love", I absolutely melted!! I'm completely in love with them as a couple and I can't believe I've reached the end of their story! Ben Alderson really knows how to write relationships—the love, the communication, the consent and the care they have for each other... It's every person's dream, to find someone who treats them the way these to do each other. I absolutely loved witnessing their relationship unfold, through good and bad, and I was not disappointed with the ending, despite the emotional roller coaster leading up to it!

Of course, there's also drama, and the end of the world approaching. Dragons and Dryads, Nymphs, and Phoenixes that possess people... And time travel!! That was new to this book, and I found it fascinating how it works, and the effect it had on the story!

I'm writing this at 3am because I could not put the book down. It got to a point where I'd planned to stop but because of how the chapter ended, I couldn't, and I just kept reading until I reached the end! This book was highly addictive, and I couldn't recommend this series more, if you like gay fantasy romance with lots of action and magic, ancient gods, stories about friends, family, war and sacrifice, and happily ever afters (with a chance of a bittersweet ending)!

"In that moment, hidden on an island surrounded by ocean and storm, bathed in the light of phoenix flame, I learned that we could carve our own place in the world no matter where it was."

I also want to just throw it out there that I spotted a couple of ways in which spin-off books/series could emerge, and I definitely wouldn't be opposed to that!

Thank you so much, NetGalley and Second Sky Books for the ARC of the 3rd instalment in the Court of Broken Bonds series! I've been reading books 1 and 2 over the last few days because I got this ARC and I can't even begin to express how lucky I feel that I was able to dive straight into book 3 as soon as I finished book 2!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5!

This was the exciting conclusion to the series that I waited very patiently for. HOWEVER, while Lylith is what I found to be a simple yet effective villain, that does not excuse the thing I was most frustrated about and that is that by the end of the book I started to view Max as a character who is wildly incompetent and self centered but not in an actively selfish sense but more like "I must be the martyr" when he has multiple friends and family who want to support him and who probably have the ability to help him make hard decisions but he insists on shutting them out. We do end up introducing time travel to the mix, which is always a slippery slope, but I do think the rules were simple and clear once the "price" was defined. If you are reading this review and have seen my reviews on the other two books, I say there is a constant theme of "Max can't have nice things." Well, while this theme does continue, I can appreciate the author kinda shifting how the theme happens in the sense that now the bad things happening to Max were kinda his fault whereas in the past bad things jusy happened to Max when he wasn't doing anything. I also think that some of the sex scenes, not all but definitely at least a couple, were kinda an afterthought like the author was writing this epic high fantasy war book and then remembered this is also supposed to be a romance series. Trailing back to my thoughts on Lylith, I wish she had been actively plotting more. I felt that until the final battle, she didn't really have an active role in the plot other than a couple appearances to try and manipulate Max and not to mention I was expecting her to be like an eldritch demon type but in reality she's actually a space vampire with a tragic backstory? I personally wish more media creators made their villains evil just for the sake of being evil instead of everyone having a super sad and tragic backstory. But you're probably reading this and thinking "OK so why rate it at 4 stars if you have this much bad stuff to say?" It's because the rest of the book is good enough in the sense that it was consistent with the rest of the series and it did everything it said it was going to do on the lable and the final battle was exciting enough that I did close this book feeling satisfied with the whole series. But while I'm down here at the bottom of the review I just want to ask (⚠️Big spoiler warning⚠️) why was Simon made king when it clearly should have gone to Beatrice because she (⚠️EVEN BIGGER SPOILER WARING⚠️) was the one who actually killed Lylith by literally decapitating her with a broken sheild?

Home... It's not a house, a car, an apartment... It can be all of those things. But home is the people. Those who make you smile every day. The people who you surround yourself with. And this book made me think about that a lot. And about what I lost, and gained.

As you might know, this is the last book of this trilogy (for now). And as Ben said, it has been a wild ride. Maximus' character grew so so much. And he lost so much in the process too. Life is tough, and painful. But it also is worth it. The sweet and beautiful moments make it worth while.

The story this time got a more dark turn, when Lilyth arrived in Aldian. Max must protect everything he cares about, especially Simion. But that turns out to be more than he can chew. Since to do that, he must travel back in time, and that is not free. The cost is too great, but he pays it gladly, in order to save his home. And he does that, but not without the loss of Leska.

Finding the rest of the conduits proves to be a more complicated task than he had anticipated. Because he needs them in order to defeat Lilyth. And because of that, forgotten truths are revealed. Truths about Aldian, how the Avarian Crest was actually split in two, how the first Heart Oak was set ablaze. But also about Lilyth, about why she destroyed countless worlds before coming to Aldian.

In the end Max and Beatrice discover the true damage Lilyth did, when discovering Elaine alive on Voltar. Simion was crowned King of Aldian, with Max at his side. They built a new academy for the sorcerers. And the epilogue melted my heart. Max and Simion had a daughter. What more could you want, other than your own family? For now it's just one of my dreams, to have a family of my own. But I hope it will come true.

Because of this trilogy I discovered I love romance books. But I guess they must be LGBTQ+ ones, though I'm sure I might like straight romance books too. I am really glad that our community has such amazing authors, like Ben. And even though this series has come to an end for now, I am glad I have found it.

Also I'm guessing I should also explain why I didn't give this book 5 stars. Unfortunately I don't know either. I just feel like this is the "grade" that it deserves. It took longer to finish, which sometimes can be annoying, I must admit. Also I've noticed some mistakes in it. Grammatical ones, at least that's what I think. And if it were one or two it would be fine. But there were a bit more. It still is ok, but is should also be kept in mind.

Heir to Dreams and Darkness is the titillating and exhilarating conclusion to the Court of Broken Bonds series and I devoured this book because of how much I enjoyed it!

Maximus Oaken and Simion Hawthorn have been a lot in a short amount of time. They've been pushed to the limits, had their bodies broken & mended, and through it all have continued to fight for their love. If you have been enjoying the other books in this series, then you know that everything at the start of this book is tense. Large threats are coming for them and those that they hold dear and the fate of the world is quickly coming into play as this conflict begins to play out. Introduce one of the most terrifying villains, Lilyth, and you have the recipe for this fantastic finale!

Let's talk about the fun fantastical elements of this story (and series). First and foremost, the magical system in this series feels inherently fun. Although we don't get the most explicit of answers on how it works, I love how emotionally impactful the magic system is. It just feels tied to the flood of emotions that the characters feel and I think that made it so much more fun in the middle of the fight scenes. Also, speaking of fight scenes, all of the fun mythical creatures that made an appearance in this series were a blast. I loved Ben's depictions of dragons, phoenixes, dryads, and nymphs. I loved how elemental it made this series and I loved how it all culminated together in this final story.

Another amazing element of this series is the romance. BEN ALDERSON KNOWS HOW TO WRITE ROMANCE. His stories are just full of heart-racing spice, delectable witty banter, and more. Max and Simion's love story is one that I was rooting for throughout this series and although I can't say how this story ends, the ending felt so right to their characters and this story.

In the end, I was racing to read the final pages of this series and found myself rooting for these characters as they faced their final battles. Readers are going to love this!

“As has been, Will be…”

Slipping back into the world of Aldian was like coming home… Unfortunately the house is on fire and everything is terrible, but home nonetheless.

Anyone who knows me knows I am a major Fan of Ben's writing. He crafts some of the most delicious stories I have ever read in the most immersive worlds possible. It's like being transported directly into the world with a front row seat to all the love, destruction and trauma packed within it! (Ben I will personally add this book to your tab for all my therapy bills you have caused)

Max and Simion have been through hell and back but have more to go before they save the world from an ancient evil hell bent on devouring their world. The plot for this book was so unique and fun, I didn't see it coming but when it did, major plot twist!!!! The spice was nice and so well written. Simion is as charming as ever and is the real backbone to this epic finale. Though you better be prepared with a box of tissues. This one is not for the faint of heart and continually pulls at your heartstrings, believe me it is all worth it in the end!

Heir to Dreams & Darkness brings back Max and Simion as they manoeuvre around their passion for each other. Definitely spicier than book two 👀 but no less engaging, I liked how their relationship gained more traction and their interactions with characters outside of the pairing (especially Bea).

I wanted more from the dragons than what we got, but that's just a personal preference. I love the magic and the romance and I adore the found family element. There's a lot to love in these books including the magic! So much fire and ice, the entire book keeps you on your toes.

It was interesting having a new focus for the 'baddie' and as is the trend in these books I felt there was still some twistys involved which kept me invested. Nothing in these books was expected which really surprised me (in a good way!) The trilogy is fresh, intelligent and diverse, a wonderful distraction from other fantasy and romantasy novels I've read!

Essentially this book is more dragons, more battles, more heat, more more more and I am here for all of it - AND I'm not even finished yet.

I've really enjoyed reading this trilogy by @benaldersonauthor and I'll definitely be picking up his other books. Thank you to @secondskybooks for including me on the tours for each instalment and for encouraging the obsession for this M/M romantasy series!

“Lightning raced over my skin as we touched. It cascaded through the room, sparking every candle to life. I would not let death and ruin take him from me. I was not ready for this to end.”

We are at the last chapter of the Court Of Broken Bonds trilogy. It’s filled with dark fantasy elemental magic, emotions and plot twists.

The arrival of Lilith, the mother of monsters is close: with the world’s survival and those who he loves at stake, Max has to figure out what needs to be done, preparing an epic battle with Simion by his side.

The narrative style is perfectly descriptive of a great world building, as the author has accustomed us. He has a gift at creating characters highly empathetic: Max is vulnerable, emotional and real and the reader feels the emotions he feels on their skin.

Time is the star of this book: the past, as part of where our roots are, the present, as a moment to enjoy what we have and the future, something uncertain but worth to fight for.

In this book you find an epic war, elemental magic, dark fantasy and a love that will remain engraved in your soul.

Thanks to the publisher for giving me an ARC to review.

Wow. What an adventure, I'm sad this rollercoaster of a journey is over and I'm having to say goodbye to this world. From the very first page this book was jam packed with action, with fierce battles and shocking moments. Danger was around almost every page turn and I was at the edge of my seat. There was some heartbreaking moments but I did like how this series ended.

Max made some absolutely stupid decisions, but I understood it for his character development. In this book, he was meticulous and cunning. And I liked how we got more Simion being his voice of reason, I really loved the dynamic between these two. I always have throughout the series, but I really loved them in this book. All the characters had amazing character growth and I liked the roles they played.

Overall, I highly recommend that people check this series out if you want a series filled with jampacked moments that will shred your feelings to confetti!

I went into this book with some trepidation because of my slight dislike of the second book. I can say that I closed this one and was sorely disappointed.

I think I just really really didn't like the romance at all. It didn't click for me for some reason, it felt so rushed, and I think in the end. I didn't actually really like any character in this series. I think I was trying to force myself to like them, but at the end of the day, I didn't.

This book had such a different feeling to it that's kind of hard to explain. But like, I closed it and it was one of the first books that I genuinely thought "Wow, that was actually such a disappointment." Which again, wild, because I liked all of Alderson's other books. This series just wasn't it for me.

Still, I suppose if you're able to connect with the characters and like them, then you'll probably enjoy this series, but I just couldn't do it.

I struggle for words for this final installment of Ben’s beautiful Broken Bonds trilogy. The path to war is full of sacrifices and bloodshed, and before it’s over, one must sacrifice some of the most important things to them. This book had me in constant anxiety or tears as the war for life and the world takes place. Ben did such a beautiful job keeping the reader glued to a page and pulling you in, making you feel like you’re fighting along Max and Simion, flying with your dragon, or using your newfound magic to save those you love. The war is finally at their doorsteps, and the paths forward aren’t easy. Ben creates such a world that is hard to pull yourself out of, and you get upset when things don’t go the way you want them to unfold. I will miss Max and Simion, but the ending is so satisfying. Not in the way you want, but how it has to be.

As has been, will be

I have been enjoying this series from book one. Queer, magic, dragons and trying to save the world, what's not to love?

I loved seeing Max come into his own. From not knowing who he really is to being a power, dragon riding mage. Max and Simion's relationship evolution from the beginning of book one to book three was a delight to read. Everyone deserves a partner like Simion! I also love that all the other characters felt fleshed out, interesting and I really cared about what happened to everyone involved.

I enjoyed how the magic and power worked and were explained. Not everything came easily and characters had to work for what they receive. Throughout the series the stakes continued to get more and more dire and the ending felt earned. It's also difficult to write time travel and have it make sense, so kudos to Ben there!

Also can I please bond with and have dragon?!

Anyone who was wishing Merlin turned out gay, loves magic and dragons will enjoy this series!

Thank you to Ben Alderson, Netgalley and Second Sky for the ARC!

Heir to Dreams & Darkness is the final book in the Court of Broken Bonds trilogy, so if you haven't yet picked up this series, you can now binge it all at once!

In Heir To Dreams & Darkness, we return to Aldian for, among other things, a suicide mission, the impossible task of defeating a powerful otherworldly demon, and epic battles.
Amidst all the action, at the heart of the novel, are all the relationships Max has forged over the course of the series: found family and family found. I loved the dynamics between the siblings, and the passion between Max and Simion. In the end, we get a hard-earned and perfectly bitter-sweet conclusion to Max and Simon's story.

You will enjoy this series if you love:
- Elemental magic and mages
- Dragons and dragon riders
- MM romance
- Arranged marriage
- Deadly trials
- Some spice

This was such a wonderful conclusion to the series. I binge read the entire trilogy in little over a week and was not disappointed by the outcome. I have read many other of Alderson's books so I had high expectations for this series finale. Max and Simion's relationship is so beautiful, painful, and so well rounded. There was the perfect amount of action and romance. Often time many fantasy books overwhlem the book with romance, but their story fit perfectly. What is so interesting about this series and specifically this book is the time travel, many fantasy books do not deal with time travel, but the way it functions in this story is perfect.

I did shed some tears towards the end of the book and was overall satisfied with how it was all wrapped up. Definitely one of my favorite reads of 2024 so far.

Heir to Dreams and Darkness was an incredible conclusion to the Court of Broken Bonds trilogy. I was completely enthralled by Max and Simion's story (no surprise, because I was madly in love with them already from books 1 and 2) and I was on the edge of my seat with every twist and turn the plot took. Alderson manages to surprise me every single time I read a book of his, and this one didn't disappoint. The stakes were so high and the villain so compelling that I spent hours biting my nails while simultaneously dying to know more and terrified of what might happen to my favorite characters! The ending was bittersweet and perfect, and was the perfect conclusion to Max and Simion's arc. What I would give for a spinoff series though!!!

Yet again, another amazing series by Ben!

Heir to Dreams and Darkness was an incredible conclusion to the Court of Broken Bonds trilogy.

I was smitten and obsessed by Max and Simion's story and I was constantly full of anxiety about how this series would end as I wanted our lovebirds to be happy! I was not disappointed. The chemistry between Simion and Max was fantastic as always.

I was overly emotion during the battle with Lilyth, crying at the sacrifices being made! But I consumed this book and regret nothing! No spoilers I promise but DRAGONS!!!

It's a bitter sweet ending due to the fact this series is now finished but I loved every moment of it and will continue to read Ben's books!

Max and Simion - you took my by the heart and put me through the wringer!

Whilst I had not read the 2 previous books - naughty me has added them to the TBR - I was soon completely invested in both their romance and the fight against Lilyth. There were tears shed when one of my favourite characters met a sticky end.

Max is the perfect reluctant hero. He just wanted his love and a peaceful life and instead got thrust into a battle for the ages and introduced to powers he never knew he had. Finding and losing family along the way. He went from nerdy and naïve to powerfully deceptive in the effort to save those he loves.

Simion would walk through hell for Max and their friends and pretty much does. He refuses to let Max face anything alone and that made me love him a little bit more. I felt the frustration he must have felt every time Max tried to go off and do things on his own. He also has no passion for power and I think that's why he's able to get a handle on all that power.

Beatrice is an ace bestie and sister and her treatment of Max never changes, no matter what power and new abilities he has. She'll break his nose if she needs to get his attention lol.

We definitely leave Aldian in a better way and the epilogue made my wee heart sing.

I do not love time-jumping but there was a need for it in the storyline and it's not just there for the sake of doing something different.

I'm absolutely adding this authors back catalogue to my TBR!

Well it has been a few days since I finished this book and I am still thinking of it. I thought book 2 was an emotional roller-coaster, but this was like the roller-coaster was going at warp10. As with other two books in the series I was always team Max and at times either wanted to give him a big hug or give him a shake and ask him "what he was playing at".
The chemistry between Simion and Max was on fire and I enjoyed reading their journey to find love with each other.
This book had me torn, One I was eagerly swiping the pages as I was drawn into the battle with Lilyth, nearly brought to tears with the sacrifices they all had to make but then I didn't want the story to end I wanted to read more of this found family.
The epilogue wants me wanting more and if there was a spin off then I will be the first in the queue to buy it. I am glad that I have found this author and I am off to read their other books

Heir to Dreams and Darkness was the perfect end to an amazing trilogy. There was action, adventure, heart-wrenching emotion, a bit of time traveling, dragons, ancient gods, and, of course, the *spice*. Watching Maximus evolve over the course of this trilogy was a master class in character development. Alderson took a scared boy who was afraid of his magic to a charismatic leader who has honed his power and is willing to do whatever it takes to save the ones he loves (and the world while he is at it).
I definitely felt alll the emotions while reading this book. There is still one thread left hanging in the "unresolved" column, which I hope is explored in future book(s) from that character's point of view, but it doesn't take away from the feeling of completeness for Max's story.

I cried….

This book brought me to tears…. And I have only cried over 6 books (including this one) out of 355 I have read since I started reading again…. This story is absolutely beautiful ❤️ and Max… my poor baby max I felt for him through this entire series. The ending was beautiful but I am curious if there is an alternate series including Beatrice and Elaine and that happened there…

All in all I was say this series is more fantasy than romance but there is still some romantic parts… all in all again I devoured this series and I just started reading fantasy in the last month.

Highly suggest!! ❤️❤️
