Racket Boy: Where's My Country?

Rate this book
Do you marvel at people who seemingly have it all only to drop everything for life in a remote village? Have you wondered about leaving your roots for migration to the unknown?

‘Fit only for climbing coconut trees.’ The mockery invented by Philip’s father because he was badminton-mad and useless (said father) at all else, lingered with him through school in Malaysia. It travelled with him on an Aeroflot to England in 1970, aged 18, functioning on adrenaline. It stuck through his navigation of parochial middle England – washing backsides in a mental hospital, law practice, sports, and professional and personal relationships.

Toughened by an Indian father and a Chinese coach, lifted by a messiah-like Englishman and grounded by a Labrador soulmate, Racket Boy – Where’s My Country , explores Philip’s life over six decades. From being ordered by the British government to leave England, accosted in Bombay, mugged in Barcelona to horse-trading with a petro giant in Ecuador and thrilling in a World Cup in military-ruled Argentina, to list just a few. Philip is now a spectator in the hills of Tuscany, more than just fit to be climbing coconut trees!

In the book "Racket Boy", co-authored by Geetha K and Philip George he gives us a beautiful story of how he was able to find himself and overcome all obstacles, in a life full of ups and downs. This book takes us through sixty years where we will have a clear picture on how Philip’s journey started from the green environments of Malaysia to those silent hills of Tuscany.

His badminton passion that was at first an object of ridicule soon becomes his pathway and takes him over many countries and societies. The representation of perseverance against his-torical richness creates a very good perspective for the readers to consider certain issues like identity, sense of belonging as well as quest for one’s dream irrespective of hurdles bedeviling it

His story teems with an interesting group of people who help weave the essence of that journey. The contrast is evident; it ranges from a very strict Indian father to a highly respected Chinese coach, a token Englishman to a Lab soulmate- these same characters effectively depict the general themes of resilience and quest for a place one can call home. His approach steers each segment through an interaction between spectacular and pensive according to his natural structuring which finally results in a fast-paced fascinating work.

An especially remarkable feature of this memoir is that it skillfully interlaces the backdrop of history with personal stories. Lived by him – starting from deportation by British officials, adversities in Mumbai and Barcelona, through working with petro giant in Ecuador- all are told with such emotional sincerity further captivating hearts. This heart-felt nature breeds closeness, hence, letting readers be part of the ordeal he goes through as if they were present to carry his burdens.

Memoir has a unique flavor in the reading genre. It is always interesting to read someone’s practical life experiences, especially when it comes through a series of adventures filled with different countries and stories.

The style of narration is simple yet engrossing where we have both downfall and maturity. A human life is full of mysteries. But accepting faults and working on reducing weaknesses is worth reading. This book has a few specific things which are worth reading such as - the badminton journey, stepping into decades, country-wise travel, sticking to self-faith; these points make this read more valuable.

A little lengthy read for me as I am not a non-fiction lover but have to admit that it is worth taking time.

Philip George's Racket Boy is an intriguing memoir, one in which the 'childhood passion culminating into an indirect stepping stone' storyline helps us understand our own storylines a tad better!
The book narrates the incidents of his life, capturing his emotions and how each encounter influenced his thought process and lifestyle. His parents were first generation immigrants, and grappling between the cultures of India and Malaysia, along with the smattering of British influence, outlined his hardships and challenges which are a lesson in history too, of how people adapted.
While navigating through his childhood, I kept rooting for the (academically)underdog who may go on to represent Malaysia internationally in badminton, but here again the story takes a turn which I did not expect. I was so glad I had not googled anything about the book before diving into it!
The story is engaging, giving us vivid imagery of his life, from Malaysia to UK, from badminton to banking and then law, and on each step of his life you find yourself motivated and invirogated!
It is definitely a must read to understand the human spirit!

I started reading this with a bit of scepticism. Unknown author, autobiography? What could be interesting about this? But since I had nothing else to read, I decided to plough on. Boy, was I mistaken.

The book turned out to be a fascinating journey of a rich, eventful life full of varied experiences all over the world, written in excellent prose. Philip George describes his childhood in Malaysia, his coming to the UK with barely £20 in his pocket, and rising to the top of his legal profession and English society by dint of hard work and a bit of luck. He describes major world events that take place in the UK and Europe as he saw them—the Thatcher years, the Falklands war, the Berlin Wall, Brexit. He writes of his love for films , music, sports, his two failed marriages and his dog. He writes of the glass ceiling for non whites in British society, though he admits to have a few very good friends amongst them. His descriptions are vivid, his struggles motivating.

I wish he had included some photos though. Of his childhood, his mentor Geoffrey, his parents, his home in Italy where he finally retires to….

I enjoyed it thoroughly. I am a slow reader—I normally don’t finish a book so quickly. But this one kept me engaged till the end.

Every once in a while, a story comes along that reminds us of the resilience of the human spirit. "Racket Boy - Where's My Country?" by Philip George is one such story, offering an inspiring glimpse into a life of trials, triumphs, and transformations. Though this is George's first foray into autobiography, his narrative carries the depth and detail of someone intimately aware of life’s intricacies.

This book traces the life of Philip George, from his humble beginnings in Malaysia to his eventual settlement in a tranquil Italian village. George's journey is marked by his battle against the label imposed by his father, who deemed him fit only for "climbing coconut trees." Instead, Philip turns his passion for badminton into a springboard, catapulting him across continents—from law practices in England to dramatic experiences in places like Bombay and Barcelona. This autobiography isn't just a travelogue; it’s a profound exploration of identity and belonging.

Philip George writes with a clear, evocative prose that vividly paints the landscapes of his diverse settings, from the lushness of Malaysia to the rugged charm of Tuscany. His narrative voice is both commanding and introspective, masterfully weaving historical details with personal reflections, making the past feel palpably present.

Philip himself is a compelling figure—his resilience and adaptability make him relatable and inspiring. The secondary characters, including his Indian father, his Chinese coach, and the messiah-like Englishman, are portrayed with depth, influencing Philip's life in meaningful ways. The ideas of resilience, identity, and the search for a sense of place resonate deeply within the fabric of the narrative.

The book is structured chronologically, guiding readers through Philip's life with a natural flow that makes his experiences easy to follow. The pace is brisk, with each chapter packed with new adventures and reflective insights that keep the pages turning.

At its core, this memoir tackles themes of displacement, identity, and the quest for personal fulfillment against all odds. It speaks to the immigrant experience, the persistence required to overcome cultural barriers, and the universal search for home.

"Racket Boy" is deeply moving, filled with moments of vulnerability that give way to triumph. As a reader, I found myself rooting for Philip through his various challenges, feeling a sense of accomplishment with every hurdle he overcame.

One of the book's greatest strengths is its ability to transport readers across the world through vivid descriptions and authentic experiences. The emotional honesty in George's writing invites readers into his world, making his victories feel personal and his setbacks poignant.

While the narrative is compelling, some readers might find the detailed recounting of certain legal and sports-related experiences a bit tedious unless they share similar interests. These sections, while informative, occasionally slow the pacing.

As someone who appreciates stories of personal resilience and global adventures, I found "Racket Boy" thoroughly captivating. Philip's journey from being underestimated to achieving significant cultural and professional milestones is not only inspiring but also deeply affirming.

"Racket Boy - Where's My Country?" is more than just a memoir—it's a testimony to the enduring spirit of a man who refused to be defined by his circumstances. It is a compelling read for anyone interested in stories of personal growth and cultural transitions. Philip George not only found his country; he found his way into the hearts of his readers.

"Racket Boy – Where’s My Country" by Philip George is a memoir that tells about the incredible life of an individual who has faced many ups and downs in different places. The first chapter focuses on his early years in Malaysia where his dad laughs at him because all he wants to know is how to hit a shuttlecock with a badminton racquet. This insult haunts him for the rest of his days, forcing him to prove himself.

In 1970, Philip left for England at 18. From the exciting early days through wiping bottoms in mental homes, Philip made it through parochial middle England with sheer grit and determination. His existence was filled up with various events; legal practice, sports activities involvement, as well as building both personal and professional relationships. The book illustrates this adaptability and perseverance against any challenge encountered by his life.

His Indian father and a Chinese coach are among the main factors determining Philip’s life. Besides, he is guided by an Englishman who seems to be a prophet of God and his Lab-related fire-minded buddy that help him through it all. He goes through life in the future as they offer him such strength and foundation.

Throughout this memoir, Philip engages in several adventures from being sent away from England by the British government to instances where he risked his life in Bombay or Barcelona, negotiating with an oil multinational in Ecuador, while watching a World Cup in military-run Argentina. Every tale has been given a vibrant touch to enable the reader experience them firsthand as if they were with him at that particular moment when it happened.

The tale of Philip is one of determination, change, and self-discovery. His travel from Malaysia to England and finally to a life spent peacefully in the hills of Tuscany demonstrates his ability to adjust and prosper in dissimilar surroundings. The book is about not only personal triumphs but also those who have influenced him and the events that have affected his life.

In general, every memoir has its own way of penning down the thoughts, happenings, and experiences. This book has a unique way of making us feel the way George felt at that time.

The book begins with the foreword, where a rough overview of George is explained. It describes how his career journey started in the UK, then as a psychiatrist, and how he landed himself as a lawyer in the Court of England.

The first chapter begins with sharing his place of birth (Kerala), his parents and siblings, and his experience in school. One takeaway from this chapter is:
1. We can learn more from the outside world.
2. We must completely eradicate discrimination and differences.

It also describes his love and interest in being a badminton player. As a typical Indian parent, his father is against his interests. But he continuously pursued his interest. When everything went well, he was excluded from the team because of favouritism, and the team that went to play without him lost their match.

As we turn pages, we get to know the embarrassing moment of George, where he took the coin on the floor that belonged to one of his classmates (a girl). As she complained, it created a big fuss, and he got caught. That was the moment he realized that, though we were about to prove something, we should choose the right way instead of acting in haste.

The book also covers his journey to different countries and traveling on the ship. In the ship, he learned the difference between how people are divided based on their status and money. It also describes his love for Italy and his dog, who travelled along with him.

In each chapter, we get to know more about him and his struggles, which push him forward.
The book must be read with patience since it covers more information. Other than that, it was a good read with mixed emotions.

This memoir chronicles the adventurous life of Philip George, an enthusiastic young sportsman who got toughened by his Indian-born father and left his homecountry Malaysia in the pursuit of identity & fulfillment that took him on a journey across the globe, before a peaceful retirement in the tranquility of Tuscany.
Long before his successful career as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales, to support his larger-than-life dreams, Philip tried his hand at many odd jobs in Lancaster and Morecambe, earning him decades of anecdotes as a process worker in a linoleum factory, a banker, a psychiatric nurse in two mental hospitals, a book-keeper in a betting shop and as a cashier in a gambling den, all the while playing in international-level badminton championships, county-level squash, taking part in international marathons as well as cycling in England and Vietnam. His resilient nature and tenacious spirit took him to three World Cups, three Olympics, three Commonwealth Games, several Formula One races and among others. With a membership in the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sports) of Switzerland,
Philip now offers virtual consultancy to budding sportspeople seeking his guidance from any part of the world.
The book offers a colourful and deeply personal dive into the life of Philip, and made me root for him during trials and rejoice at the victories. The support given by his various mentors makes us believe in the guidance that the Universe provides when we are persistent enough to fulfil our destiny . The vivid imagery and detailed narration transport the readers right to the various locales with him, which makes the reading experience a memorable one. It's an inspiring memoir that echoes the themes of cultural-diversity, determination and self-discovery.

The narrative is both commanding and introspective, weaving together historical context with personal reflection, thereby bridging the past and present seamlessly. Secondary characters, such as his Indian father, Chinese coach, and a messiah-like Englishman, add depth and influence George's journey in significant ways. The memoir’s themes of displacement, the quest for identity, and the pursuit of fulfillment resonate deeply, offering an authentic glimpse into the immigrant experience and the challenges of overcoming cultural barriers.

While the detailed recounting of legal and sports-related experiences may slow the pace for some readers, these sections add depth to the narrative. Overall, "Racket Boy" is a compelling and heartfelt read, rich with moments of vulnerability and triumph. It transports readers across the globe through vivid descriptions and authentic experiences, making George's victories feel personal and his setbacks poignant. This memoir is a testament to the enduring spirit of a man who refused to be defined by his circumstances, finding his place in the world and in the hearts of his readers.

Do you marvel at people who leave everything for a remote village? Racket Boy – Where’s My Country follows Philip, mockingly deemed “fit only for climbing coconut trees” by his father. From school in Malaysia to navigating middle England, Philip faced many challenges, including working in a mental hospital, practicing law, and complex relationships. Guided by a strict Indian father, a Chinese coach, a messiah-like Englishman, and grounded by a Labrador soulmate, Philip’s six-decade journey includes deportation from England, adventures in Bombay and Barcelona, and business deals in Ecuador. Now in Tuscany, he reflects on a life well-lived.

George takes readers on a journey to investigate the depths of identity and the pursuit of a sense of home through a captivating fusion of historical background and reflection. The tale is intricately woven with the themes of identity, resiliency, and the pursuit of a sense of place. The reader is transported together with George as he experiences the highs and lows of his life by the captivating and descriptive words. The most valuable lesson I took away from Philip’s tale is the human spirit and resilience—never give up and never stop fighting for what you believe in.

George’s open writing encourages a sense of intimacy, which makes his successes all the more satisfying and his failures all the more heartbreaking. The supporting cast highlights the universal themes of perseverance and the search for a home by adding levels of depth to his journey, from his mysterious father to his powerful teachers. This is a must-read if you like memoirs and introspective pieces!

If this book got publish in earlier times, I'm sure Rory Gilmore( from Gilmore Girls) would be reading it. It's such a fantastic book and almost feels like reading classic literature.
While I was reading it I felt extremely calm and also liked how Philip faced his challenged, his bullies and everything without losing hope and kept moving forward. Everyone has low times and so did he but that didn't stop him from making something out of his life.

Departing Malaysia after high school, he spent nearly four decades in England before ultimately settling in Italy during his retirement years. One of the best memoirs that I have had the pleasure to read and the privilege as well to speak at its launch in Kuala Lumpur.
Halfway through reading it, I wasn’t sure whether the book was the combined memoir of several people named Philip George. I have never known anyone with such a chequered life – from a spoilt brat in childhood who, in his father’s eyes, was fit only for climbing coconut trees, morphing into a sportsman extraordinaire, an adventurist, a romantic, and a natural social adapter whose indomitable maverick spirit or ‘curved ball attitude’ (I found this phrase in Chapter 7) enabled him upon arriving in Lancaster as a young lad to work in all kinds of jobs - from washing the bums of patients in a psychiatric ward to stevedoring and banking - and bonding with grit and grace with the working class. Always with a soft corner for the underdog, upon finally becoming a solicitor in 1982, he audaciously challenged the UK’s Ministry of Defence to win a case for his mentally and physically abused client, and in another episode, braved the Ecuador jungle with bullet vests adorned to hold court on a kidnapping legal case for a deceased client. Both luck and patronage certainly played a hand in crafting a life for Philip, as on account of his prowess in badminton, he found in Geoffrey Knowles a foster father, a mentor, and a faithful companion and in whose law firm he finally served as a partner. The chapters are beautifully paced, the descriptions of events and places are riveting, and the writing is impeccable. Kudos to both Philip and co-author Geetha K for bringing out this extraordinary biography.

This book talks about the life of Philip George for six decades, after which he became known as “Racket Boy”. From his birthplace in Malaysia, Philip continues on from the father who once advised him that he was “only fit for climbing coconut trees” to the frontier that is parochial middle England. His portfolio comprises working in a mental hospital, law practice and sporting activities. The reader is introduced to a cast of characters who played an important role in Philip’s life through this book: an Indian father, a Chinese coach, an Englishman with almost messianic qualities and finally, a Labrador Retriever friend. These connections are what bring about his development and perseverance.

The storytelling method used in this book is really captivating as well as lively. It’s through the stories of Philip and the writing of Geetha K that readers are immersed into experiences starting from being ousted from England by the British government, assaulted in Mumbai or mugged in Barcelona. Humor, suspense and descriptive language are put into good use by the authors so as to make sure their audience gets glued to the pages. The narrative acquires depth through anecdotes and personal reflections too.

Racket Boy: Where's My Country? does have a considerable emotional impact which celebrates human determination and bond among people. My advice goes to those who are interested in self-improvement as well as cultural adventure and an exciting story telling style. If you are a person who is interested in memoirs or just like a good story, then this book is for you.

I usually wonder 'why would anyone really be interested in knowing the life story of someone they've never known or met?' But while reading 'Racket Boy', I realized that it's precisely the intimate details and peculiarities of the author's life that makes their story so captivating and worthwhile to read. Despite being a stranger, I found myself drawn in and getting inspired by his accomplishments and experiences both in and out of the sports field.

The title of the book does enough justice to the book, as it is a name that suits the author's journey from growing up as the jungle boy from Kajang who is, as described by his father, 'only fit for climbing trees' to the person he's today.
Phil was more inclined towards playing badminton from the beginning, but his diverse interests in cricket, football, marathon running and motorsports can also be clearly seen throughout the book. At the end, Phil found his true calling as a lawyer.

The book shows the typical Indian mindset that often prioritizes traditional careers over sports and the arts, dismissing the request of pursuing career in sports as a 'waste of time'.
The coconut tree reference mentioned on the back cover of the book caught my attention and made me pick up this book to read, and I really liked how the author used the same reference throughout the book, to illustrate his journey in a unique and compelling way.

I would recommend this book to sports enthusiasts and those considering a career in the related fields. Even if you enjoy reading lengthy memoirs, this could be your next read.
