Lost Mate is the fourth book in the ‘Sapphire Ranch Wolves,’ series. It stars Ross, human security agent for the Calvary, and Dylan, wolf shifter who worked for the Calvary. This is told in third person from Ross’ pov.

I’ve read the first three books in this series, but it’s been a while. If I remember correctly, Dylan reappears at the end of Book Three. He was on an undercover job for the Calvary, but then he went ‘dark,’ meaning the Calvary didn’t know what happened to him. In the meantime, bad things happened, and the Calvary thought Dylan was a traitor, so they are suspicious of him when he returns. This book is a lot about figuring out whether they can trust him again, and Ross and Dylan working out that they are mates. The fact that Dylan has no memory at all of what happened to him makes the Calvary even more suspicious. More characters are introduced probably for another book. Also, these characters know what happened to Dylan before he lost his memory.

I’m kind of ambivalent about the characters. I liked Ross, he was fumbling his way through on what it was like to be a wolf’s mate, but he was trying. I didn’t like Dylan. He acted very submissive. That was partly due to the fact he’d lost his memory and had no idea who he was, and that the Calvary was wary of him. At the same time, he acted almost like an omega, which to me would make him unsuitable for undercover work. For me, he was written far too submissively. As to the sex, there was too much. The book wasn’t that long, and the sex took the place of more info about the Hunters, and other shifters.

Some things I didn’t like:
1) Dylan vehemently disliked it if Ross kept secrets from him. But a big point of contention right before the Full Moon run, was that Dylan kept a huge secret from Ross, enough for Ross to decide he was going to pack and leave. There’s a huge argument, Dylan turns into a wolf, and other Calvary members show up to stop Ross from leaving. This is inconsistent writing because Dylan doesn’t give Ross the same respect as he demands from Ross. It felt like a manipulation by the author to create some form of conflict. It didn’t feel organic.
2) The members say they’ll make it up to Ross for leaving him out of the decision making, and he gives in. Thing is, the author never writes about how the Calvary leaders grovel to Ross for what they did. So, this turns into a dropped subplot and is annoying.
3) During the Full Moon run, the shifters are attacked by the ‘bad men.’ Who are the men? They aren’t the Hunters, because when one of the wolves is grazed by a shot, he doesn’t disintegrate. Who are the men, and why are they there? The author never gives a complete explanation, only that the Calvary got info that something was going to happen. The men are also cowardly because they don’t bother to shoot the wolves when the wolves run at them.
4) There are also a lot of errors in this book. The author could use another proofreader or more betas.

I liked the plot of the story, but like the rest of the books in the series, the author never goes into much depth on what is happening. She just hits the major points of the plot, but then she repeats a lot of the same repetitive points with the main couple. I liked Ross, but I didn’t like Dylan. I’ll likely continue with the series because I want to see what becomes of the Hunters, not because I’m necessarily enjoying the style of writing. The book is an easy and fast read without a lot of monologue which is a big plus. I give, Lost Mate, 3 Stars.

Fourth installment of the Sapphire Ranch series and my second read (book 1 Hunted Mate). So I didn't jump into the backstory cold, but I'm missing some of the arc.
Brown writes great shifter tales, and this is no exception. Enough drama, danger and intrigue, coupled with burn-the-page mating, this edition scores on all counts. Great character development despite the amnesia, I was rooting for the bound.

DNF. Maybe it's me but right from the start I got confused, I figured not reading others previously in the series was the problem, but things didn't improve. Sorry Sue, I usually enjoy your works.
