Here Be Dragons: One Man’s Quest to Make Healthcare More Accessible & Affordable

Rate this book
Putting “Retail” into Medicine

Here Be Dragons is the true story of what happens when you are bold enough to try to transform a hidebound, multi-trillion-dollar industry. Today, millions of people benefit every day from accessible, affordable healthcare at walk-in clinics close to their homes. They are open seven days a week, with extended weekday hours, and provide high-quality basic healthcare at reasonable prices that are transparently posted. In 2020-21, almost everyone in the United States benefited from the access to COVID-19 testing and vaccinations that these clinics provided.

But retail clinics did not emerge without a fight. They faced strong opposition from the medical establishment, overly restrictive government regulations, and skeptical third-party payers. They also faced consumers who were conditioned to believe that quality healthcare could only be delivered in in an office or a hospital on someone else’s schedule and without having any idea of its cost.

Physician practices and hospitals continue to play indispensable roles in patient care, but the massive U.S. healthcare system has not proven to be accessible or affordable enough for many patients and third-party payers. The system needed to be disrupted, and Web Golinkin was one of a relatively small number of people who have been able to do it.

However, this is not a book about unbridled success. Like many hero’s journeys, Web’s story is filled with bumps, bruises, and a few dragons along the way. Web began his journey by focusing on health information, starting the first 24-hour Cable TV network dedicated to health, America’s Health Network, which was eventually sold to Fox. He then helped to revolutionize healthcare with RediClinic, which placed medical clinics inside drug, grocery and big box stores and was later sold to Rite Aid. Most recently, Web was CEO of FastMed, one of the nation’s largest and fastest growing operators of urgent care clinics.

The fact that retail clinics are now a permanent part of the healthcare landscape is evidence of success, but getting to this point has been a wild and frequently very rough ride that challenged all the passion, endurance and street-smarts Web could muster at every step along the way.

Read The People's Hospital by Ricardo Nuila instead.

Despite the author holding himself out as a "revolutionary" several times in this book, he is not. He managed to put a ill-fitting band-aid on a very broken system. And while a "doc in a box" can be a helpful tool in modern US healthcare, it's hardly something to brag about popularizing. While the author seems to be very adept at business, he does not demonstrate knowledge of actual healthcare. This is made most obvious in his epilogue where he really misses the mark on understanding obesity in the US. As if you just have to tell fat people they're unhealthy (they know!) without discussing or understanding the underlying systemic issues at play. His comments about how much money he made in this end section are also very off putting. Congrats on being rich, I guess.

The writing is also very mediocre. The author over explains things that are common knowledge or could be easily looked up. But does nothing to describe the other "characters" in the book to make them memorable enough for you to care when they happen to come back into the narrative. Overall a very disappointing read. I'm very glad I didn't pay for this book.

Author Web Golinkin has lived quite a life. He is acutely aware of how difficult it is for many individuals in America to get high-quality, affordable healthcare. Golinkin is one of the few people who actually chose to do something about it, though.

Here Be Dragons is a nonfiction account of how the author worked tirelessly to open clinics in various parts of the country that would be available to people who desperately needed them. He did so by founding America’s Health Network, a cable TV station that was meant to educate people on their healthcare options. He also helped to create RediClinic, which was meant to give the public another alternative to hospitals and private practices.

The author has a wry wit, and he puts it to good use as he describes the bumps in the road he encountered as he worked to make the lives of average American citizens better. He did not succeed in all his goals, but this book might just turn out to be a better way of educating people about the realities of the US healthcare system than his other endeavors turned out to be.

An excellent read on the concept of stand alone affordable and easily accessible clinics. Mr Golinkin worked in many industries before he honed in on the healthcare clinics. He did his research and always supported the idea that the frontline workers would make or break a company. He wanted to remove the politics and bureaucracy of corporate life and his mission was to support the workers providing the service and the leadership had to believe in that mission. He wasinvolved in RediClinic and FastMed among other companies. Having worked in the healthcare field for many years, he is spot on supporting and encouraging the ones on the front line because they are what the public and consumer views as your organization. One disgruntled employee can destroy your reputation. Support the workers and don't be afraid to roll up your sleeves and assist when appropriate. A happy employee will be much more likely to provide excellent service.

Really interesting history

The author of this book, gives us the history of the remote clinics that we all know and see everywhere. However just a few years ago they were almost nowhere. And this is the story of how they became prolific across the United states. The author details the ups and downs, the challenges and the opportunities that he and his other cohorts had in creating this new style of healthcare Deliverance within the United states. What I found most interesting is the fact that this book really helped tie in a lot of information that I learned in school, and through the research for my Master's degree, so it really helped me understand all of that information a whole lot better. As such I think that any aspiring Healthcare professional especially somebody who's going in to the field in order to help solve problems and bring Solutions, should take up this book because it really helps you understand of how we got to where we are right now.

A book to be inspired and use the inspiration to do something.

Author Web Golinkin offers us an extraordinary document that allows us to understand in a profound way about the great obstacles that many Americans face in accessing affordable, first-rate healthcare that guarantees their human dignity but despite being a delicate subject to touch politically speaking decided to confront this problem.
The book is a chronicle mixed with drama detailing the author's tireless efforts to implement clinics across the country, addressing the pressing needs of the population and driven by it all the author eventually created corporations and initiatives that led him to offer health services to people he never thought could get them.

A book that serves as an example and inspiration as well as being a simple text to understand, especially for those entrepreneurs who know that in the background there will always be a social mission.

Disclaimer: I received this book from GoodReads in return for a review.

Here Be Dragons is the memoir of the author's journey to create a sustainable, affordable and accessible health delivery system. Beginning with creating health programming and a health related network (which was later acquired by Discovery Health), he moved into an, at the time, innovative system of setting up small clinics in drug stores, supermarkets and big box stores These were staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants, and were aimed at providing care for walk in patients, who could also shop for the medications and other supplies needed in the stores. His journey has him creating clinics, moving on to run others, partnering with companies such as Rite Aid, dealing with the financial issues of a small start up, etc. It is a very interesting read, and I found it quite compelling. I'd certainly recommend it.

Here Be Dragons by Web Golinkin is the fascinating story of one man’s mission to help reform the healthcare system in the United States and to make healthcare more inclusive and accessible to everyone in the USA. Golinkin describes the many struggles and challenges he faced along the way to make his goal a reality. Golinkin managed to implement and open many retail clinics across the USA, which not only gave patients a viable alternative to hospitals and private practices but also made it possible for many Americans struggling to afford healthcare with a reliable option. The author is open and honest about the challenges he faced and to what extent he succeeded or failed. Although he was not able to fully implement his vision, it still points the way for future solutions to the USA’s healthcare crisis.

This read was so interesting and full of impact. It shows the journey towards transforming the healthcare industry into a more accessible and affordable system. Through the author's pioneering efforts, walk-in clinics have become an integral part of the healthcare landscape, offering convenient, cost-effective services with clear pricing. I think it is amazing how despite facing significant challenges from the traditional medical establishment, regulatory hurdles, and initial consumer skepticism, his adventures, including the launch of America’s Health Network, RediClinic, and his leadership role at FastMed, have made a lasting impact. This narrative not only celebrates entrepreneurial spirit and his contributions to healthcare but also provides an honest look at the obstacles and setbacks encountered along the way.

This wasn’t what I expected. I thought I would be reading about someone who changed healthcare from the top down. I thought I would get an overview perhaps even history of the healthcare system in the US and how someone through legislative and policy means made efforts to make healthcare more affordable. What I got was more memoir/business of how author Web Golinkin rose in the business of healthcare and went on to develop urgent care clinics and how these clinics evolved based on perceived needs of the clientele. Much of the narrative was about how to finance the clinics through partners. I am not financially literate so through some of this I was a little lost. I think the book is valuable in that the author lays out some good service-oriented business principles. This was a Goodreads Giveaway.

A shock of reality.

Web Golinkin is a businessman who has focused on increasing the accessibility and affordability of reliable health information and basic healthcare throughout his life and career.
The American healthcare system is complex and responds to a lot of different variables, many of which are unrelated to health needs. In this book, he tells his experiences and all obstacles that he has faced along the way.
I like the honesty with which it is written; Golinkin is clear to communicate and doesn't hide or avoid information. The book is sincerely impressive; the author shows a reality that many ignore while inspiring readers to work to improve the system just as he did. It is a must read!

This book is definitely a strong questioning of the United States health system, and I would think that while reading it you feel identified with other health systems in the world. The author chronicles his own struggle to transform the health system, and provides solutions to make health care more accessible and affordable for all. It seems to me that the book is very connected to the reality of the current health system, and what the author seeks is to highlight the importance of offering basic medical services at transparent and accessible prices. I really like the way the author persists and innovates in a sector where change is difficult. I recommend this book because I found determination and vision in it.

An illuminating perspective into the origin and inner working of the retail healthcare business written by the founder of retail clinics himself. Web Golinkin narrates his multi-decade endeavour to make healthcare more accessible and affordable: from introducing cost-effective retail clinics to striving to make health-related information more accessible to the average individual. He also addresses some of the shortcomings pertaining to today's American healthcare system and introduces proposals to overcome them.

Thank you Netgalley for providing this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Well written book.
Very interesting and informative.
We have a health system that so many cannot afford or even get access for treatment.
A great idea was formed and developed to allow fast access and somewhat affordability to those with medical injuries and sickness.
Don’t kid yourself it’s not free care, but it is allowing people treatment that they generally could not receive before.
It’s also a system that can make the investors money. Well you would think so.
The red tape, interference, obstruction, small minded people and ignorance encountered along the way, can be a deterrent to so many.
However a person with a vision and concern of others tried and succeeded, well done.

America has a complex healthcare system, complex enough that people don't understand the depth of it all and how it works. In this book, the reader will find personal stories from the author, Web Golinkin, and how he had to battle against a corrupt system to become an entrepreneurial driver who will do their best to help change and improve the system.
This book left me highly motivated; it inspires people to step up and do something! Improving our Healthcare system depends on all of us, not just the higher people! With proper cost-effective actions, it can be done. This is a book that throws light into this complicated issue and even shares personal insights. Solid reading.

As author Web Golinkin argues, the global landscape of patient care has entered a new paradigm where technology, healthcare professionals, and patients all play an equal role in how and where care is provided.
Enabling digital services, building the foundations of integrated care and ensuring financial stability are the central pillars of the modern healthcare system. That is why improving the way patients experience their care, both at the individual and population level, is of utmost importance.
What I liked most about this book is that the author exposes his experience regarding the topic in question, and that makes the reader feel identified with what he is narrating.

This is a must-read for more than one. Its narrative is absolutely enlightening and its content educational enough to even be used as part of the obligatory literature at some schools, whether medical schools or not, so that students can learn at an early age how some men were brave enough to cause “revolutions”.

The author’s vision is here portrayed in such a way that is not difficult to understand, he put forth plenty of insights through a narrative that includes his personal life and anecdotes.

Whether one is into medicine or not, this book is read anyway, so that we can allow ourselves to open our minds. Loved it!

A very enlightening book. Reading about different ways to make healthcare more accessible will always be a priority for me knowing how things work in the world. The book follows Golinkin’s journey to help solve this issue and to make health more accessible and affordable.
It is nice to have his experience and his journey with all the good, the bad and the ugly.
This book not only educates you to keep working on your dreams but also is a testament that it can be done and it can make a difference to a lot of people.
Here Be Dragons is a book that could be more popular in today's world to spread his message and better the world.

Will this be about Dragons? A dragon of a different kind. Health care can be difficult to get and find in your life! Looking through the index the chapters give you an outline of what will be discussed throughout the book. All of the topics are needed to understand how to find affordable healthcare and maneuver the system. Because I have never had to use insurance, I am not familiar with the how to’s. And by reading this book, I have a greater appreciation for the difficulty people can face. This is a good book for anyone needing or having difficulty getting insurance. Here Be Dragons written by Web Golinkin is well worth the read.

A must read

This book changed the way I see and perceive the health care system in the United States and in the world. Personally, I work hand in hand with the health sector and I have never read a book so accurate to reality where it deals with raw and real issues that no one dares to talk about. The author shows us how the big hospitals or health entities have refused for several years towards possible positive changes that could benefit us as a society, just to benefit themselves and end a possible competition.
Wow, everyone should really read this book and understand a little more about the healthcare system and all the secrets behind it.

This guy is a genius

This is not just any story, because whoever reads this will understand that there are definitely still people with the clear objective of doing things right.
What better way to demonstrate this than by facilitating medical access to thousands of people in the United States through the creation of accessible and good quality hospitals.
Let yourself be enveloped by the fascinating story of how we got to where we are today in the country in terms of access to medicine, the highs and the lows, the most characteristic successes but also the most horrible dragons that the author has had to face.

A Goodreads Giveaway Review

Golinkin provides a compelling read into some of the fast paced medical systems we all use on the daily. He reflects and references personal motivation to make healthcare easily assessable while Trying to navigate making walk-in clinics a profitable provider in the industry.
Well written and worth the read for all as medical consumers but especially those into business leadership or working in the medical field as well.
Personally I enjoyed the integration of explanations with factual information.

Disclaimer: I won a copy of this from Goodreads as an early reviewer.
To tell the truth, that's the only reason I finished the book. And, I've been putting off writing this review.
I had hopes for this book, as I've been dubious about the care given in big-store medical clinics.
Some of these concerns were answered, as well as the rationale behind starting the clinics.
However- this is a boring brag book. The author seriously needed a ghost writer or a better editor. There are better books out there to read.

This book chronicles the author’s efforts over three decades to make health information and basic care more accessible. It highlights the navigation of complex external obstacles as well as the development of effective models to turn retail-based and urgent care clinics into sustainable businesses. Although the focus is on the healthcare provider organization, there are leadership lessons that are applicable to other industries.

Not what I was expecting

I received this ebook through a Goodreads giveaway. I was expecting the content to be much more about the changes needed in the heath care system, but the book is really a memoir recounting the author’s business dealings. The epilogue was much more aligned with my expectations of the book.

The business advice was mostly trite - surround yourself with people smarter than you, be a servant leader, disrupt, etc.
