Their Lost Souls

Rate this book
Turning the key in the lock of the lakeside cabin, Ally puts her finger to her lips as her boyfriend laughs softly. Tonight it’s just the two of them. Later that night their broken bodies lie in the grass by the boathouse, the moonlight reflected in their unseeing eyes…

When a young couple are found murdered by a remote holiday cabin, Agent Tori Hunter races to the scene: and is devastated to recognize Ally Mannion, a close friend’s daughter, and her boyfriend Reed. Who would want to snatch away their innocent lives?

The first thing Tori notices is a boat drifting out on the lake. Did someone witness the attack? But with the boat offering up no clues, interviewing Ally’s heartbroken family Tori soon realizes that Ally and Reed broke in to the cabin. Were they hiding something? Or did the young couple see something they shouldn’t?

Then the body of a missing person from fourteen years ago is found at the bottom of another lake. He too was murdered. Convinced the two cases are linked, Tori uncovers a series of terrible crimes at the heart of the local community stretching back years: even to her own school days.

To catch the killer Tori will need to question everything about people she’s known her whole life. But how far will she have to go, before they strike again?

This completely gripping and addictive crime thriller will have you up all night racing through the pages. Fans of Mary Stone, Gregg Olsen and Melinda Leigh won’t be able to put down Their Lost Souls.

Tori Hunter #6 is not as compelling as other installments in this series.
The beginning was electrifying- then plop. After the initial action packed and gripping scene, the suspense fizzled. As the investigation of the crime waned on and on, there wasn’t momentum built because the reader was privy to the criminal perpetrators early on. Therefore, no tension or twists. The pace slowed to a crawl as action didn’t pick up until the 85% mark.

For riveting suspense and an enthralling series by this author, I’d recommend the McRyan series. I prefer and would recommend Mr. Stelljes’ first series featuring Mac McRyan; Mac’s character is much sharper and more multi-dimensional than Tori. Furthermore, the Mac McRyan series is more edgy, exciting, and suspenseful! Mr. Stelljes is a great story teller and I have read all of the compelling McRyan books! The Tori Hunter series isn’t as compelling IMO.

This is book six in the Tori Hunter series, I had read book one and 5, and have books 2, 3, and 4 in my kindle. I don’t like to read a series out of order, but with so many books to read I missed those 3 books,(looks like I have some catching up to do).
I love this author, and have read all of his books, (except for the 3 I missed).
Roger is a fabulous author, who happens to be from where I live.
This series takes place in northern Minnesota, in our land of 10,000 lakes. I have vacationed in the area this series takes place more times than I can count. Tori is a former FBI Agent, and is now a consultant for the FBI. Her boyfriend/partner, Braddock, is the head Detective for the Sheriffs department.
Two teens are murdered after being seen by 2 men that were in the process of stealing a boat. One of the teens was the daughter of a very good friend of both Tori and Braddock, so they take this case very personally.
The investigation takes them into similar cases and the tension and excitement just keeps building until the final page.

One of the worst things that could happen to a parent is your child dying. When the police suddenly pays you a visit, your fist thought would probably be that they were the victim of an accident, but what if they were murdered....? It really must feel like the world has collapsed and you think you will never overcome this pain.

You cannot do anything to change this and you pin all your hope on the police finding the ones responsible for this gruesome action.

In come Tori, Braddock and the rest of the team determined, as per usual, to bring closure for the parents.

But this is not the only case that keeps them busy. It's all far more complex than this and when you think it's over, it's not over yet. :)

Greed, violence, lies and deceit, they all make people do despicable things they are convinced they can get away with. Well, baddies, you really should take the time and think before you act, because downfall is waiting for you, for sure.

Tori and Braddock grow stronger and stronger. I wonder what the author has planned for them  next. 5 stars

Thank you

Taken in the Cold is the seventh book in the Agent Tory Hunter Book series by Roger Stelljes. It's the first book that I've read from the series, but the author provided sufficient background information, so that I could enjoy and understand the necessary details without spoiling the previous storylines.
Tori is investigating a difficult case where a couple have been murdered and the woman's son is missing. Her ex-husband is the chief suspect but soon he turns up and Tori realises that the truth is far more complex and dangerous.
This is a fast-paced and entertaining story, with lots of twists that I enjoyed.

I was very excited to see another book in the Agent Tori Hunter series. Tori ,Braddock, and the team are back!! Tori is on the hunt to find out who killed Ally and her boyfriend. Were they in the wrong place, or were they involved in a sinister boat stealing ring? There are so many twists and turns in this book ! I think my favorite part of this series is the characters . I love following Tori and Braddock thru every book . Every book has its own storyline that is very interesting and different. Great series!

I enjoyed revisiting with Tori & Braddock. I will say it was not my favorite of the series. Another college kid death was a lot after last book. That being said this series is a favorite of mine. And I’m looking forward to what is coming. I truly love the dynamic of these characters and how the author has developed them. I feel as if Tori will be having a reckoning with a former character.

I am really enjoying this series and it kept me entertained throughout and it was a definite one session read as I had to keep reading.

The character development and relationships are getting better and better (not that they weren't good before) and the story was really interesting and woved many different strands into it.

I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Their Lost Souls, the sixth novel to feature former FBI Agent Tori Hunter, set in the fictional town of Manchester Bay, Minnesota.

The bodies of Ally Mannion and her boyfriend Reid are found murdered at a remote cabin. Tori knows Ally and is determined to find her killer, even if clues are thin on the ground. Then a skeleton is found at the bottom of a lake and is identified as a missing person from fourteen years ago. Tori believes the cases are linked and discovers a crime spree going back years.

I thoroughly enjoyed Their Lost Souls, which is a relatively long book that takes the time to cover a wide range of crimes and build a big story. I’m not always a fan but in this case I really liked the both sides narrative. The reader is in no doubt about what the bad guys are up to and yet the author still manages to throw in a few twists, while Tori and Will Braddock, both her life and work partner, play catch up. I like the contrast between knowing what and who are behind the crime spree and watching Tori and Braddock mount a thorough investigation, using their knowledge, experience and a touch of inspiration.

The novel has some big scenes that are cleverly thought out, sometimes violent and heartbreaking in others. This means that there is plenty of action to keep the novel going, but it doesn’t abandon characterisation. There is a fair amount of soul searching and explanations about decisions taken. It fleshes out the characters but all that navel gazing slows the reader down.

Their Lost Souls is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

4.5⭐

When a spate of boat robberies in Manchester Bay turns deadly. Braddock and his girlfriend/partner, former FBI Agent Tori Hunter are desperate to find those responsible. Especially as one of the victims is the daughter of a very close friend. A friend who once saved Tori's life.

But clues are thin on the ground and all they have to go on is the type of knife used. Which unfortunately is common amongst the many fishermen who fish the surrounding lakes.

Yet, one thing does stand out to Tori, and that's the fact these robbers are proficient and have clearly killed before.

Then a lead arises, one that has them visiting a prisoner who is serving fourteen years for handling stolen goods.

But he is reluctant to talk.

Until he hears someone close to him has been murdered and what he shares has Braddock, Tori and the team looking into an old home invasion case.

But then a jewellery store is robbed and resources are stretched especially when another body is found in a vehicle submerged in a lake.

And as the separate investigations come together. Tori and Braddock realise they are searching for the same two men.

Only, it's clear they have help, but from who?

And as the net closes in the danger ramps up. As those desperate do whatever it takes to stay one step ahead.

And with action, twists and turns. This was a cracking read and brilliant addition to a fantastic series and if you've not read any of the series yet. I urge you to do so, as you really won't regret it.

My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read an early copy of Their Lost Souls. 😊

This has got to easily be one of the best series out there. Over the past 6 installments I have slowly fallen in love with each of the characters and the execution of their backstories and relationships is flawless. I adore the dynamics of the team and still chuckle about Steak and Eggs 😆

Before I start my review I have to say that I would massively recommend reading the previous books, whilst you could read as a stand alone there are alot of references to past cases etc that would make alot more sense if you read from the beginning!

In book #6 a spate of boat robberies just turned deadly, a parents worst nightmare has come true, their only child is mindlessly murdered along with her boyfriend and not just any parent but Kyle Mannion. Tori & Braddock are called in to investigate the killing and soon pick up on some anomalies, is this a one off burglary gone wrong or is there a connection there to previous crimes?

Both Agent Tori and her partner/boyfriend Sheriff Braddock will do anything to find Ally's killer, this has cut deeper knowing it's their friends daughter and promise Kyle so. Can they deliver on their promise?

I must admit that personally I didn't find this installment as compelling as others. The initial buzz of excitement and suspense seemed to fizzle out as as the reader were privy to who the perpetrators are so the momentum didn't build like I've grown used to. Being aware of 'whodunnit' didn't 'ruin' the story bit it did change the overall read for me as the real speed of pace and tension didn't really get going again until the last quarter of the book.

Huge thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC.

The sixth book in the Tori Hunter series takes place in Summer in the northern Minnesota town of Manchester Bay. A college couple uses their friend’s cabin for a romantic getaway. Little do they know this will lead to the last moments of their life. Tori and Braddock are called onto the case, which is a high priority as their friend and local billionaire’s, Kyle Mannion, daughter was one of the people murdered. As Tori and Braddock began to investigate, they find that this event could be tied to a string of burglaries around Northern Minnesota. It is up to Tori and Brannock to find the killers and stop them before it is too late.

This is the sixth book in the series, but it still has the intrigue and intensity of the other five. Mr. Stelljes does a great job weaving a complex and fast-paced story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The northern Minnesota setting adds to the story with its beautiful backdrops. Tori Hunter is a complex character that shows both strength and vulnerability. She is easy to root for. Mr. Stelljes what’s does a great job coming up with plots that are believable and tied in to the fabric of this northern Minnesota town. While not the big city, you feel like something like this could happen. The realism makes the story more intriguing and hard to put down.

I would highly recommend this book. It is an easy read that keeps your attention. The story and characters are top-notch, and I can’t get enough of the northern Minnesota setting.. Thank you NetGalley, Roger Stelljes, and Bookouture for a free advanced copy for an honest review.

I finished reading this book and genuinely wondered how I had got through life having not read a book by Roger Stelljes before. What an addictive page turner! After a young couple are found murdered near a lakeside holiday cabin by Agent Tori Hunter it immediately rings alarm bells - not only are the cabins owned by the most affluent in the nearby village, the recent peace has been disturbed by a string of boat thefts, they hadn't caused any serious concern until now - with a boat drifting out on the lake near the scene of the crime, did the couple witness something they shouldn't have? With no recent murders reported, is this simply the case of a burglary gone horribly wrong?

Once I started reading, there was no way to stop. The pace of the book was set from the go, the writing is choppy and charged during car chases (yes, those!) and yet paced but swift when the the contents is more explorative/investigative. No matter what the scenario, the writing was prepared to deliver. There are so many delicious twists and turns within this book that you actually feel like you're watching a cat and mouse chase unfold before your very eyes. I was holding my breath at so many moments as I was reading this and with some of the characters showing grey traits, the reader can only empathise with them; think desperate parents want to give the world to their daughter- they make the most dangerous criminals. It was hard to know whose side you wanted to be on at some points! With thrillers, it is especially entertainin when both the hero and anti-hero are commanding, intelligent, cunning, agile and witty and with Tori and Vee, both female leads, it just made this story that little bit more interesting. An easy 5 star - thank you @netgalley and @Bookouture for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest unedited review!

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced digital copy in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own and are not influenced by outside factors.

This is the first book I read in the Tori Hunter series, so if that influences your opinion on my opinion well, I'll leave that up for you to decide. What I really enjoyed was the fact that this book didn't make me feel like I needed to have a background for the characters. If you jumped into this one just for a murder mystery, then you would be filled in accordingly without being annoyed of the few hints to other books in the series.

Outside of that, I'm not a fan of knowing who did it before the very end as it takes away the fun "who dun it" aspect, but I do think it was necessary for the plot of this book. Stelljes does well with the unique character arcs and giving motivation to the character's actions. I enjoyed wanting to root for Vee's crimes while also rooting for Tori to catch her.

Honestly, this was an average murder mystery book with a bit too much fluff writing for my liking. The final 70ish pages had all the action and really gripped me. Overall, worth reading if you intended on finishing the series, but not something I would reach for again.

REVIEW: 4.5 STARS
Thanks to Netgalley and the Publisher for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book was amazing! I loved almost everything about it. I loved the storyline, the characters, crime solving and the chemistry between Tori and Braddock. Although, the first few chapters were kinda dragging when there was no lead I'm the case. But, once the team found a break, the book picked up on a fast pace.
👮🏼‍♀️👮🏼‍♂️
This is my first book in the series and it's the sixth one. I was not confused at all in knowing who was whom. The author did a good job in describing the characters so newcomers like me won't be side tracked. I liked the nit bits of Tori's past.
👮🏼‍♂️👮🏼‍♀️
I also liked the crime. It's not everytime you see a robbery case in a crime thriller. I loved the perfect execution of the crime solving and hoe the double homicide was the kick they needed
That being said, this book was very good and you should pick it up. I've got an inkling to read other books in the series too

I have had the privileges to read the last three books in the agent Tori Hunter series created by Roger Stelljes. This is already booked six in series and it's called Their Lost Souls and it came out on the 7th of December. I received a copy from Bookouture via Netgalley.

A young couple is found murdered at a remote holiday cabin and agent Tori Hunter is the one to investigate. It appears to be related to her own school days as well when another body is found. Who can Tori trust from as it involves people she's known all her life? Will she manage to solve this case before any more people are hurt?

The book started absolutely brilliant. The very first chapter immediately draws you into the story and from then onwards it just keeps getting better and better developing into a great thriller that you just can't seem to put down. As it is already booked six the main characters are developed quite well but still you get to know new characteristics of the characters creating new layers to the story. The fact that it also hits close to home for the main characters gives the story an extra dimension.

This book begins with high action right from the first page. Ally and her boyfriend are brutally murdered in a cabin in the woods. I didn't see the murder coming and honestly didn't immediately get the motive. However, getting to know the perps through the pages made these murders make sense. There were brutal and had very little regard for others.

Tori and Braddock make an awesome team and I have always enjoyed the rest of the sheriff's department, especially Steak. This was definitely a tough case for them to crack and it was made worse by the fact that Tori the victims were personally known to Tori and Braddock.

I enjoyed the different POVs and as usual, I found the narrative by the perps to be quite gripping. Without any spoilers, let me just say that the perps POV had me shifting from sympathy, anger to finally relief.

Although the case took, what felt like, a really long time to solve, it held my attention throughout. The final chapters were so intense that I couldn't get shut down my kindle to sleep, I just wanted to find answers. This series gets better with each new installment. I can't wait for book 7.

😲I couldn't put it down! Crime spree at the lakes🌅🛥

I loved the way the seemingly unrelated elements of crime in this murder mystery come together. It's so well-written I did not want the story to end. I am fairly new to the Tori Hunter series; I read the last book in the series and I think this one was even better. I particularly liked the way author Roger Stelljes built Vee's story of hardship. I felt bad for Vee at first and then... Wow, how my perception of her changed!

It had plenty of action, but Tori and Braddock are the thinking man's detectives, constantly reworking the puzzle pieces of information they winkle out to achieve the result. In this case, a good friend's daughter is murdered and they have an extra emotional reason to nab the killers. Soon, they are facing a string of crimes seemingly aimed at the most prosperous residents of their lakeside paradise in northern Minnesota.

Great, exciting, fast-paced.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Roger Stelljes's brand new book is Their Lost Souls.

This is a first read of Stelljes for me. There are a large number of characters in this series, but the author provides lots of history and detail as to who is who and what has taken place in the past. I easily caught up.

Stelljes has created a great lead with Agent Tori Hunter. She's smart and driven - and has a bit of a dark side when it comes to justice. Braddock - her partner in life - is also her work partner. Stelljes gives his characters (including the supporting players) rich personal lives.

His plotting for Their Lost Souls is unique. A young couple are brutally killed outside their cabin. Who could have done such a thing? The pressure is on from a number of higher ups - they need a result now. A single clue at the cabin catches Tori's interest - and takes her to answers she couldn't have imagined.

I liked it all - the characters, the search for the perpetrators, the quick dialogue, the setting and the continuity!

Needed some Holiday traveling reading and saw the new Agent Tori Hunter (Book #6) had been released. Every book has its own storyline that is very interesting and different. I enjoyed revisiting with Tori & Braddock. I will say it was not my favorite of the series. I truly love the dynamic of these characters and how the author has developed them. The mix of making good guys also bad guys added an element of depth to this story as well.

Although it's over 400 pages long, I flew through as Stelljes's writing flows so easily, and the characters are so engaging. The story was pretty fast-paced, and even when the leads seem to dry up, we know something is coming along soon that will jump-start the investigation once again. I couldn't wait to see what Tori was going to do once she figured that part out. It takes time for them to see the way forward but when they do it leads to a thrilling takedown.

Negatives; I'm not a fan of all the back story dialogue, it's obvious that this is a series and should be read from book 1, so it just gets redundant. I don't think it needed to tie together so many different crimes, the initial murder in the story that started the investigation kind of got lost as the book went on, which was disappointing.

Another enthralling crime thriller
With Agent Tori Hunter searching for the killer(s).
This time there are connections to her friends and her past
With school time friendships and memories that may last.

A young couple found brutally murdered by the lake
What did they see? Was it a mistake?
A boat drifting nearby offers no clues
But can Tori uncover somethings to use?

Reconnecting with friends from back in school,
For whom nature has been so cruel.
Another body from back in those days reveals fears,
And a series of crimes stretching back years.

Asking questions of people from her past, Tori soon discovers
She really doesn't know them better than others.
A tense, gripping read with plenty of surprises
Until the truth she and others finally realises.

A brilliant crime thriller where friendships are put to the test,
And only the truth will enable the past to be put to rest.
For my complementary copy, I say thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review.

Wow, I don’t have any kids but I cannot imagine losing a child. And for the police that have to investigate these tragedies… As always with this author, I could not put this one down. I love the Tori and Braddock and getting to see what they and the team are up to. The author is so good at laying out the plot of multiple crimes and then weaving the pieces together. So complex and layered yet no string is left hanging.

There were a lot of twists and turns in this game of cat and mouse. I loved watching as both sides worked to have the upper hand. It unwinds at a great pace with lots of action. I enjoyed the team dynamic in solving the case. How hard they work and the process of it. And how their personal lives evolve from book to book. Over the span, it’s almost like these characters are people I actually know.

While the case and the book work as stand alones, the series is great and worth reading them all.

Another fantastic book in the Agent Tori Hunter series by Roger Stelljes. This is the sixth in the series and they just keep getting better. They are definitely action packed mystery thrillers that pull you in right from the start. Two college students just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time to witness a robbery. Unfortunately, that cost them their lives. So Tori and Will Braddock are pulled into this. To make matters worse, they know the girl’s parents. As they investigate, more crimes appear to be linked to the robbers/murderers. Can they figure it out? Tori, Will and the rest of their team are like bulldogs and never give up. The story is full of plot twists and have you wondering if things are going to work out. Stelljes is a master at weaving the human element into his story line so that you can relate to his characters. And what an ending! Fantastic job! Looking forward to the next one.

Tori and Will are called to work on a double murder. This case hits close to home as Tori and Braddock know and are friends with one of the victims' fathers. The murders seem to be connected to a string of boat thefts which at least gives the police a starting point to work off of.
This book was pretty fast-paced, and even when the leads seem to dry up, we know something is coming along soon that will jump-start the investigation once again, and once a certain someone gets involved everything ramps up a bit and I couldn't wait to see what Tori was going to do once she figured that part out.
I love seeing Tori and Will working together and seeing them move forward in their personal relationship.
I really love this series, and especially Tori and Braddock, I can't wait to see what kind of case they will be solving next.

I have done all the books in this series. I listened to them. This is the first one I did as an ebook. I really enjoyed this book! I've been a big Braddock fan since the beginning and I only like him more after this book. I also like Tori. In this book I really felt for her. To have a another dear friend end up being a terrible person, sucks. I love that she is torn between how she feels about Vee and Maggie. Both are bad people but they handled it differently. I did miss Quinn in this book. He's been more present in other book and was kind of sad he isn't as present in this one. I still want to know how they knew exactly where to cut the duct to access the cables. That wasn't ever answered. Personally, I think Vee and Dan got what they deserved. They didn't earn that restaurant in FL. If there was ever a time to blame Karma, this is it.

In this book the main character talks about a book she's reading and I think it's the best way to describe this series:

"Preposterous and unrealistic for any number of reasons but also kind of mindlessly entertaining."

The story is pretty gripping and after so many books, you can't help but get attached to the characters and to root for them, but all the veiled sexism that you *almost* miss, makes it impossible for me to give the story more than 2 stars. Were it not for that and the terrible dialogue every time Tori talks to a girl friend, it could've been 3.5, maybe 4 stars, but it's just some stuff that had me rolling my eyes so hard it hurt.

I think that rather than have more men writing female characters (and mind you, some write them really well), we need more women getting their books published.
