Aris Duology #1

Possession

Rate this book
A GOD CANNOT REMAIN TRAPPED. NOT FOREVER.

No one knows what Aris really is. He came to this world three years ago and was stopped just before he managed to destroy it. But he wasn’t exactly stopped, more like locked away. Inside of a person.

Mary was a regular girl before she became the host of a homicidal entity. Though powerless and nothing more than a voice in the back of her head, his presence changed everything for her. Now imprisoned and shunned, she’s learned to cohabitate and converses with Aris to stay sane. They read books, watch movies, and she listens to his plans for world domination. Maybe they've even become something like... friends? As the years pass, she's come to accept that this is all her life will ever be. Until, one day, the amulet keeping Aris inside of Mary begins to malfunction.

With the threat of his escape imminent, faced with the possibility of having a real life again, Mary starts to fight for freedom... forgetting all the while that Aris might have become a little too attached during their time together.

With cults, magic, and gods, Possession tells the story of a girl desperate for her own life, and a god, more interested in keeping her trapped in his own.

Five star spoiler-free review below!

First of all, this book is not a light-hearted fantasy or romance. Aris (the god and deuteragonist) is not morally gray. He’s evil. He likes being bad and hurting people. This book isn’t about the main character “fixing him” or him learning his lesson and becoming good in the end. So let’s get that out of the way.

This book can be summed up with the dictionary definition of the word “possession”, which was provided before the story:

Possession
1. Something owned.
2. Something to be controlled by an evil spirit.

Mary was once just like you and me, a normal girl who unfortunately got possessed by an evil god. Now, she is the only thing keeping Aris from tearing the world apart. Locked away inside her, he doesn’t have access to his powers.

Are they friends?

“‘For a second there I thought you might actually care about me.’”
“‘Mary, do not delude yourself.’”

Nope. To him, she’s a human as dumb as the rest of them but…

“‘Mary is not weak!’ Aris snaps.
I’m a little surprised, and he hisses, Only I’m allowed to talk to you like that!

He is territorial. Even possessive, you could say!

It’s an incredibly interesting dynamic. Very toxic and completely unhealthy (which Mary recognizes, but also seems resigned to).

For me, the highlight and focus of the book was any interaction between Mary and Aris. I loved their dynamic together. For the parts where they weren’t together, things seemed to drag. Not because the writing or story was bad necessarily, but just because I wanted more of the two of them.

I won’t say how the book ends, because this is spoiler free, but you will be definitely wanting. I loved this book and devoured it within hours, and it book sets up what I’d imagine to be an epic fallout. I can’t wait for the next!

In the end, five stars for *Aris*.

thank you to lauren evers for sharing the ARC edition of "possession" with me! the concept of a young woman, mary, being the host of a homicidal entity, aris, that is incredibly obsessed with her totally reeled me in. no one knows for sure what aris really is. a god? a demon? i may refer to him as a variety of beings in this review. one thing is for certain: aris is evil. what i found to be a breath of fresh air is that mary doesn't have the stereotypical "i can fix him" mindset, nor does she TRY to "fix" him. i mean, you can't really fix a deity, so...

what hindered me from rating "possession" higher is that it didn't manage to keep me hooked throughout the entire storyline. there was a lot of telling rather than showing. it's okay to tell, but you have to have a balance between the two. allow your readers to interpret the scene and the character's emotions for themselves instead of always spelling it out for them. as a reader, i love having to "work for my meal" sometimes. furthermore, i felt like we were in mary's head TOO much. there were points where i honestly skimmed because it felt like i was having an overload of information dumped on me that i didn't need.

i struggled with the magical system a bit. i felt like there wasn't enough lore explained behind the magic itself, but that could just be a me thing. the whole "conduit" thing confused me. i'm used to more headstrong, strong female leads, therefore mary pissed me off in some parts. to be fair though, i don't know how exactly i would act if i was in her situation. i don't know if i'd be inclined to continue on with the duology but i am mildly curious to see where aris and mary end up by the end of it.

Received an early review copy! (Some spoilers...ish)

Generally, I liked the book. I didn't love the main character, who felt a little "woe is me" and generally went along with what others decided for her. I also didn't like Henry who was obviously NOT the real love interest. He felt super bland. Maybe that was the point? He did make Aris stand out.
Some random things bothered me, like how Mary couldn't do magic and that was "just because." But then she ended up being able to do it at the end? A lot of the world building feels like it's "just because" and that's largely because the book centers on the relationships of the characters, not the world, but some explanation would have been nice. The author goes into it a bit with the history of some of the institutions, but it didn't feel like enough.
The plot was also unpredictable, which I liked but also sometimes felt chaotic. I think that might have been the point given how insane the main character's life is, but I would've liked some structure.
All in all, I'm looking forward to the next book and am happy for the opportunity to have read!

I was given an advanced copy for my honest review.

Mary was unfortunately caught in a "wrong place wrong time" situation. One that would ultimately change her life forever. Aris, our Morally Grey God of Choas was imprisoned inside of Mary, and further imprisoned in the Mages hands. When the opportunity arrises for Aris to break free of his vessel, he turns it down, not ready to leave Mary.

The amount of adventures and ups and downs within this book was so good! And we all love a morally grey, touch her and 💀 MMC, and Aris is all of the above. As for Mary, who's sorta bland and always does what she's told, it gave her room for her character development, which I'm excited to see more of in book 2, which I'm absolutely desperate for!

Mary had no idea why Aris was trapped in her and tried to stay busy in her prison. But that is hard when you have limited freedom and the demon of chaos trapped in your body. But one day, everything she knows is turned upside down. And she is left discerning if Aris cares about her or just needs her.

The idea of forced proximity by possession was a new one for me, and boy, did I eat this up! I believe this is going to be a duology, and I can't wait for the next installment. Mary and Aris banter is so funny, and I loved seeing the way they have grown together and learned to be symbiotic. Aris gives all the "touch her and I will end you vibes" plus shadow daddy lol. The story is fast-paced and action filled. It was sad seeing her mother's views and how people treated her when all she did was be at the wrong place at the right time. She has been used by others and just wants to protect herself and make her own decisions. Though it seems at every corner, someone is still doing it for her. Watching her grow as a character was so enjoyable. The magic system is explained enough but isn't super detailed, but I think more will come to light in the next book. The cult followers were crazy and I am still thinking about the tablet scene, iykyk.
My only main issue with this book would be the grammatical errors. It kept distracting me from the story, so for that, it is a 4/5. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and want to read more. I found the concepts super creative, and the romance is giving!

Thank you for sending me this E-ARC Lauren!

This was such an interesting, gripping and dark read and I really liked it. If darker fiction isn’t your normal go to then I would bear in mind there’s TWs with this read.

Some notes that reduced the rating for me:

- The first half was slow, and a just a tad dull. It took a while to get into the story, but I think this was due to the build up of the plot and characters which ultimately did pull together a bit more in the last 50 pages or so.

- I initially wasn’t the biggest fan of Mary. She was a little bland, and almost too ‘fragile’ and accepting of her situation. That being said, I really loved her character development by the end.

- On maybe 1 or 2 occasion parts of the plot and dialogue were repeated. It has been written like it was new information, but had already been mentioned previously.

- I did guess one of the main plot twists. I wouldn’t say it was necessarily glaringly obvious and it was still executed well and had emotional impact.

What contributed to the 4 ✨ rating;

- If you like a dark (like actually properly evil) BEYOND morally grey MMC’s then you’ll love this one. I saved so many of Aris’ quotes, he was just perfection as a character. The right amount of possessiveness, obsession and taunting.

- Knowing that this isn’t the end of the story, I feel like this really has potential to be soooo good in the next book. This set up the story well and built the basics of an interesting supernatural world of cults, wizards, magic, gods and paranormal beings which I think could be really interesting with more detail in the next book.

- It was soooo brutal and shocking in places which I just loved. I’m definitely one of those people that enjoys the drama evil “villain” characters bring to a story.

Overall, I would recommend this read as I did get sucked into this, and just had to keep reading and find out more.

Possession was an engaging read that had me hooked through the whole story. I enjoyed the pacing of the story getting faster as it progressed to match the growing angst of the plot. The direct story telling from the main character allowed me to fully understand everything without trouble while still leaving many details to my imagination. I'm looking forward to reading Obsession!

Okay forget morally grey, if you like your MMCs to be morally black, this book is for you. Aris is as bad as they come, yet his relationship with Mary is so intriguing, whilst the world’s treatment of her is appalling, I find myself rooting for him.

Mary I have mixed feelings about, she overthinks a lot, which as an over thinker myself, did make me feel a kinship with her, but it was also annoying at times. She’s definitely not a strong FMC in this book, but given the situation she’s found herself in, that’s hardly surprising. I think this may be developed in the second half of the duology, as by the end of the book, her self confidence has vastly improved. She is the only one brave enough to stand up to Aris after all.

If you like dark paranormal romantasy books, you should definitely read this book, but as always make sure you read the trigger warnings first.

I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. I really enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to reading the second half of the duology, Obsession when it comes out next year.

***ARC REVIEW***

4.5⭐️'s.

Lauren’s ability to immerse me so deeply in the story that I forgot I was reading showcases a talent few authors possess!!

I absolutely devoured this book!!! I do not typically seek out ARC’s but when Lauren thought it might be up my alley, she hit the nail right on the head.

I could not put this down!!!

Mary and Aris had me drawn in immediately, their dialogue, their dark relationship, the conflict. So good.

I am utterly impressed with how amazing this was and cannot wait for the second book.
So sad it’s over.

WOW.

I was contacted for an ARC for this book, and holy cannoli, am I so glad! This book is in my top 20 (top 3%) of 2023. So, here we go:

Aris is a god. Well, THE God - at least, if you’re talking to him. After wreaking worldwide violent chaos, a group of mages band together to bind him and his power. The problem is that they have to bind him within a human person…and by chance, that happens to be a girl named Mary.

Mary has been living as a prisoner of the mages for years now. Her only companions are abusive guards who don’t speak to her, and the mythical being living in her head who speaks to her WAY too much. He’s demanding, cruel, blunt, violent, and desperate to get out. But the only way for this to happen is if Mary dies.

When the Grand Mage comes to her with a deal that would let her out of captivity, Aris refuses. He’s extremely possessive of his human host, and doesn’t want to risk anything happening to her. But in refusing this deal, Mary and Aris set off a chain of events that will irrevocably change their relationship and the world.

If you love laugh-out-loud dark humor and a phenomenal, unique storyline, you’ll love Possession. Expected publication date is December 30th, 2023!

'Possession' by Lauren Evers is a stunning masterpiece that effortlessly weaves elements of fantasy, suspense, and emotional depth. Evers has crafted a world that is both mesmerizing and terrifying, centered around the complex relationship between Mary and the god-like entity, Aris.

The novel begins with a thrilling premise: a god, Aris, is trapped within Mary, an ordinary girl, turning her life upside down. Evers masterfully explores the psychological impact of this cohabitation, delving deep into the evolving dynamics of their relationship. As Aris whispers of world domination, Mary grapples with her new reality, creating a fascinating character study.

What sets 'Possession' apart is its intricate plot and the richly developed characters. Mary’s journey from a prisoner in her own mind to a fighter for her freedom is compelling and emotionally resonant. The looming threat of Aris's escape adds a layer of suspense that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.

Evers's writing shines in her depiction of the bond between Mary and Aris. It's a complex mix of friendship, dependence, and manipulation, challenging the reader's perceptions of villainy and victimhood. The inclusion of cults, magic, and gods adds a layer of depth and intrigue that enriches the story.

As the book concludes, Evers leaves the reader eagerly anticipating the sequel, 'Obsession'. With its perfect blend of thrilling fantasy elements, psychological depth, and compelling characters, 'Possession' is a must-read. It's a standout in its genre, promising an even more exciting continuation in the upcoming book.

An ARC exemplar was sent to me in exchange for an honest review !

Please heed the trigger warnings before reading this book !

Sadly, this book wasn't my cup of tea...and this most likely has influenced my rating. First of all, I like fierce female MC's and Mary cleary doesn't fit the description, which is understandable because most people wouldn't dare defy a powerful entity.

The concept of having an evil entity stuck inside a female MC's body was an interesting and original way to execute a "forced proximity" trope, but I found it badly executed somehow ? I had the impression I was reading a long monologue instead of a story ? This might have been intended by the author in order to illustrate how helpless Mary is against Aris and how invasive he is in her life ?

I will read the second book regardless because I'm curious to see how this Duology ends !

WARNING: The following review is full of spoilers!

Es decir, what’s wrong with you, girl?

Y qué decir del world building…

This is an arc review and the below is my honest opinion.

Possession is live 30/12 on KU!

”There is no end to what I will do to keep you.”

“Some say Aris appeared out of nothing the first time something bad happened. Others argue that he's older than that and was just inspired by chaos and death. Did he make himself from the concept of evil, or is he why evil exists? I don't know."

Ooosh. I wasn’t planning on doing another arc this year but Lauren popped into my messages and after reading the blurb, I couldn’t help myself. It fully lived up to the expectation for me. Possession follows Mary, our FMC and her life dealing with Aris… who’s trapped inside her.

Think ‘the host’, she’s there. He’s there. The voice in her head can talk back and man does he have a lot to say. Aris is God, he’s dark, truly evil, he wants to kill everyone and has no qualms causing chaos. For one week, he was the end of the world. Until the wizards and the grand mage managed to trap him. Unfortunately for Mary, she was unwilling container for Aris. Her life ended that day, not *literally* but everything she knew went to absolute pot. She’s spent everyday since (3 years), locked inside a prison cell with Aris and nothing much to do.

His only way out now, is if she dies.

But one day, the grand mage visits. He offers them an out, for a price. Aris won’t bend, he refuses to be anyone’s puppet. And the cogs turn, everything from here just explodes. Kidnapping, death, near death experience.

Aris won’t let anyone hurt her.
She is his.
Only he can decide her fate.

It is a dark romance but it’s also the first of a duology, don’t go into this expecting mega spice and grand declarations of love. He’s controlling and Mary really goes through some emotional abuse in this. Everyone wants something from her, no one is genuine. And can I just say a massive screw you to her mother? Hot damn. In terms of dark rating, I would personally say maybe a 2-3/5. But even though I found it mild, please check the triggers. I’m fully aware that just bc it wasn’t too heavy for me, it might not be right for you.

My Rating: ★★★★☆

As a member of Lauren Evers' ARC team, I had the privilege of delving into the captivating world of "Possession" before its official release. Evers' novel, independently published on December 1st, 2023, is a gripping tale that seamlessly weaves together elements of fantasy, suspense, and human struggle.

In "Possession," Evers introduces readers to Mary, an ordinary girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances when she becomes the unwilling host to Aris, a mysterious and malevolent entity with designs on world domination. Trapped within Mary's psyche, Aris exerts his influence, transforming her life in ways she could never have imagined. What unfolds is a riveting story of survival, friendship, and the battle for freedom as Mary grapples with the consequences of her involuntary bond with Aris.

Evers' narrative is nothing short of addictive. From the very first page, I found myself drawn into Mary's world, unable to tear myself away as the plot twisted and turned with each revelation. The dynamic between Mary and Aris is particularly compelling, as Evers masterfully explores the complexities of their relationship, blurring the lines between captive and captor, friend and foe.

What truly sets "Possession" apart is Evers' skillful storytelling and her ability to keep readers on the edge of their seats. The pacing is relentless, driving the narrative forward with a sense of urgency that leaves little room for respite. As Mary fights for her freedom, readers are taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions, experiencing the highs of hope and the lows of despair right alongside her.

As I turned the final page of "Possession," I couldn't help but feel a sense of longing for more. Evers has crafted a world brimming with potential, ripe for further exploration, and I eagerly await the release of the second installment. With its richly imagined setting, compelling characters, and electrifying plot twists, "Possession" is a must-read for fans of fantasy and suspense alike.

In conclusion, Lauren Evers' "Possession" is a triumph of storytelling, leaving an indelible mark on readers long after the final chapter has ended. With its blend of heart-pounding action and thought-provoking themes, this novel is sure to leave you craving more. Highly recommended.

I just finished Possession and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it; usually am on the fence about a lot of dark romances but I thoroughly enjoyed this read!

First, I want to thank the author for the ARC in exchange for a review!

𝕆𝕧𝕖𝕣𝕧𝕚𝕖𝕨

The story follows Mary, a girl who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and becomes a living host for an ancient god (forcefully by some mages), Aris. It begins three years after the initial incident and how their life is now.

The first thing I loved is how Mary began to grow stronger over the course of the book, especially towards the end! No one in her situation would be thrilled, but she still managed to want and try to live.

I actually really enjoyed her and Aris’s banter in the initial start of the story. It was interesting to see how they are co-living in the same body and become somewhat reluctant friends.

Aris was definitely a morally dark character that did not shy away from it. As the story is in Mary’s POV, we don’t get a ton of his actual thought process and motives. Id be interested to see more into him and what exactly it’s like being a dark god!

The concept of this book is what initially kept me intrigued; a girl and a dark god forced together and trying to survive. The tension between them was clearly shown and progressed as the book went on. I don’t want to spoil anything, but Aris definitely cares more then he lets on.

The ending was a perfect set up into the next book and I am excited to read it; every character was set in a way that there will definitely be drama.

There wasn’t a ton of romance, but it definitely laid the ground work for the story to flourish! Nothing in the story so far made me uncomfortable which I was glad about!

𝕆𝕧𝕖𝕣𝕒𝕝𝕝

I’d definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a dark romance with a fun concept! Despite some possessive behavior and mild problems, there weren’t a ton of triggers so far!

This gives off One Dark Window vibes and I love it. At first I was worried it was going to be an exact imitation of ODW but I was so happy when it wasn’t!

Mary was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Somehow she managed to get stuck with Aris. He lived inside her for 3 years being her enemy and being a friend, as much as he knew how at least. Aris lives for chaos, death and destruction. Mary not so much. She wants to get her life back and have her body and mind to herself. So what happens when she’s granted that wish? Welp. A whole lot of me almost throwing my kindle across the room.

Like the many readers who will undoubtedly find this book, I wanted the obsessed, power hungry, morally grey MMC to seduce the FMC she can’t breathe without him. That is not Mary. 😂 do not go into this story thinking that. Mary falls for Henry who is basically a wet noodle. I wanted to like him so bad but he just wasn’t interesting. Which in the end is fantastic. He wasn’t enough for Mary anyways. I thought there could have been another possible love interest but ya know, he stabbed her so I couldn’t see that working out long term.

Ultimately, I’m hoping it’s Aris. But if it is, then this is a slow ass burn. Tbh Mary needs to just accept that Aris will always find her, he will always come for her and he will always possess her. And that’s all us morally grey girlies want in the end. But as I said before, that’s not Mary. And I do love that about her. I love that she doesn’t want to be a victim. She wants her own life. She doesn’t want to fall head over heels in love with the villain. But dangit, Mary, just do it! 😂

In the end I really loved this story. I’m very curious to see how book 2 goes. Maybe there isn’t even a love story between the 2. I honestly can’t even say at this point. But I can say I will be anxiously awaiting the next book!

(The first book in the Aris Duology.)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🚫🌶️ (no spice in this book, but I have feeling that may change in the next book, Obsession.)

Thank you to the author @lmeversbooks for reaching out & allowing me access to an ARC of Possession! 🫶🏼

I definitely devoured this Ebook, but I still tried to take my time so I could savor every moment of enticing banter from Aris & Mary! I immediately got venom vibes & had to find out more. I think the Banter was what really pulled me into the story at the start, but I stayed for Lauren’s phenomenal writing style! 📖

Synopsis: Mary & Aris have been trapped together for 3 years. Her the host & him the dark entity trapped within her for safe keeping. Mary was just a normal girl prior to her involvement in this intervention. Aris is a mystery having come to her world 3 years ago with the intent to cause destruction & chaos before he was stopped by the forces that captured them. Now they share a cell, body, & all their time together. Over these years Mary & Aris have known no other companionship & have cultivated an unlikely friendship. Mary has come to accept that this is her life now, until there is hope for a future with more after the amulet holding Aris begins to malfunction. Mary is ready for more & to fight for her freedom. However Aris seems to have grown attached to his host & may have other plans for their future despite Mary’s desire for her own life.

I absolutely loved this book from start to end. Just when you think the story is slowing down, BAM Lauren hits us again. I felt for Mary throughout the story, even though I was rooting against her better judgement, haha! (if you know, you know 😉) This book had the feel of a brewing dark romance with modern day fantasy elements. This story has deceptions, betrayals, magic, forced proximity, slow burn romance, and so much more! I felt so attached to the characters & the sting of the betrayal to my core. This was a short read of 282 pgs. that was definitely binge worthy! I highly recommend checking Possession out! I cannot wait to read Obsession and follow along to see what Lauren has in store for us next! 🖤

This is such a creative, fun, dark story. This story is about an evil god trying to destroy the world but is trapped in woman’s body and now she’s keeping him from ruining the world. I do recommend checking out the trigger warnings because it’s not your typical light fantasy story. This book is not what I was expecting and in a good way. I enjoyed Evers’s writing style and loved the story they created. The book was slow in the beginning but it begins to pick up. The conflicts were enjoyable and I loved learning about the magic system in the story.

Mary is a girl who doesn’t know that an evil god is stuck in her mind. At first, I didn’t like her too much but she began to grow on me as she developed throughout the story. Aris is a morally gray evil god; let me say he is bad. He wants t destroy the world but the only person keeping him at bay is Mary. He was an interesting character and I really enjoyed learning about him. There are some side characters in this book but the MCs took over the book and I cared about them more. As this book is labeled as romance, I would have to say it’s not truly a romance book. I’m not sure if it will be more developed in the next book but this was more of a slow-burn relationship that included forced proximity.

The ending was good and it feels as though there will be another book. I’m excited to see it because this was such a great read and something I never read before. Don’t go into this book thinking it’s a romance yet but more of the fantasy part of it. I recommend checking out this book because it’s a great read you don’t want to miss out.

Not sure how to do 3.5 stars but that’s my ultimate rating.

Initially I had a lot of negative thoughts about this book, the pacing was a little off and I felt it could do with a whole lot more world building as we spent time with the MCs in a single room, barely interacting with anyone else or talking about the world before being in the room. I also had thought they were very one dimensional characters but again, I think building up around them would have made the story more fulfilling from the start.

As the story progressed and we got to learn about the world around them and the governing systems and the magic of the world, I felt a lot more engaged in what happened to the MC and the demon in her head.

Nearing the end there were a few moments where I thought it could have benefited us to have had the MC and Aris discussing the world as they saw it to each other earlier in the book as names were being introduced that I wasn’t sure id read prior but they seemed to have a big impact on the future of the story.

The ending was really good and despite the earlier shortcomings of the book, I am interested in the continuation of the story now that Mary and Aris are separate and at heads. The drama, the betrayal, the return of old characters. Best part of the book for me and shows the author has great potential. With a bit more world building this could be a hit.

To sum it up, this is a compelling story, but I want to get more on the world they live in and what drew Aris to Mary in the first place. Those details can make a world of change for me but I did like the story.

I was so intrigued by the premise of this one, and that cover is just WOW!!

Everything about this book sold me! A story filled with dark magic and a magical system that see Mages trap a God of Chaos within a human, barely avoiding world destruction. An evil society determined to see his release and a innocence human forced to live in a cell.

I mean who doesn't want to read that right!

And I was not disappointed. I couldn't put this one down once I started and binge read it over a weekend. And I'm now so ready for book two.

This book TOTALLY made me rethink my morals and what I need to root for a character.
Because honestly Aris (the VERY destructive evil God of Chaos) is strangely, a character I ended up totally hooked on.

There was no Team Henry for me, I was Team Aris all the way.

Now this is DEFINITELY not a book where the girl changes a morally grey character for the better, I mean Aris is by no means morally grey, he's way more evil than that.

And while some of the things he says to Mary had me swoon almost, you definitely get the feeling that it's all about possession for him. BUT somehow this story works. SO. WELL.

And on so many different levels. I instantly connected with Mary (the human the Mages trapped Aris inside via a pendant)

I loved the magic system, the world setting was brilliant and the different twists in the story surrounding Aris and his containment and where that leads (trying NOT to give too much away here )

Book one in the new dark fantasy Aris duology recently released in December and this is one I highly recommend you check out. I so can't wait to see where this series goes next!

Definitely a binge-read (from kindle unlimited) and I LOVED every minute of it! Now I’m a sucker for tropes as much as anyone- forced proximity, enemies to lovers (?), OP MMC, love triangle, etc. but what I liked the most was how differently these were applied here.

Mary is a truly ‘normal’ person, not some secret prodigy genius or magical chosen one. So I found her slow-to-catch-on/cluelessness more refreshing and funny than annoying (cause I’m so sick of these FMCs being all the same- suddenly crazy good at stuff they never knew existed). Because of how naive she is there’s a lot of times where she’s obviously not interpreting things correctly, so I just seeing her as an unreliable narrator with all this crazy stuff kind of happening around her. It’s actually really fun as a reader because we can catch things and see twists coming before she herself does.

Aris is Aris. And I love him for it.
Besides his obvious powers, hes super clever and mysterious, making their back-and-forth banter really captivating (and sometimes surprisingly intimate). I’m dying to learn more about him and his origins/motivations so I will FOR SURE be checking in to read Obsession when it comes out in a few months!

P.S. I’m also in love with Jaegen! ^•^ I might be alone in this one but he’s just so interesting to me, spin-off series maybe?

lauren was kind enough to send me an early copy in exchange for an honest review!!

when the grand mage traps the god of chaos, aris, in mary’s body - her life is suddenly turned upside down. she and aris are locked away, far from society where he can longer harm anyone. they form a shaky sort of friendship - until one day, when the amulet binding them together begins to malfunction. mary thinks this may be her chance for freedom - but at what cost, with aris eager for the same?

this book is unlike anything i’ve ever read. if you like fantasy, magic, and morally dark mmc’s that would literally destroy the world for the fmc - i suggest you pick up this book!

i did have a few complaints - some of the book felt unfocused. it seemed that everyone but the main character had a plan, a drive, so things felt a bit stale being in her head. i also thought one of her relationships (i won’t spoil) felt extremely unconvincing and forced, and wasn’t too surprised when things turned for the worse.

i also saw a few people say that they disliked how the fmc was basically led around the whole book, never making a decision - yet i thought it made sense. sharing a mind with a god is bound to take a toll, and i thought the author did a good job portraying mary’s loss of self.

Honest ARC review:

“I am with the darkness. Surrounded by it, breathing with it.
The Dark says to me, “Let’s rule the world.”
“Rule the world?” I scoff. “How ridiculous.”
It pauses. Considers this. “Of course,” it says. “We should end it instead.”

Overall, I had a great time with this book. It’s
interesting, fun, has a cool magic system and take on the balance between order and chaos, plus a hot, dark, possessive mmc. There were so many stunning lines or questions that made me pause to mull them over, and I really enjoyed the dialogue between Aris and Mary. Plus the descriptions of and mystery around Aris and Jaegon had me hooked!

A few negatives: There were several typos that my eye kept snagging on throughout the book, and the fmc felt very bland to me (although I do see some interesting character development foreshadowing happening at the end of book one) as well as some side characters. This is definitely more character driven than plot driven, but when the relationship between the main characters is so twisted and interesting, that’s not a bad thing. Aris and Mary kept me turning the pages, so pros absolutely outweighs the cons for me.

Thank you, Lauren, for the ARC. I will definitely be getting my hands on book two!

Okay this book super pulled me in. I mean I finished it in three days (one of which being Christmas Eve😂) but I couldn’t put it down! It’s definitely intriguing and addicting - I really liked how the Mary’s story just started. We would only get the background info scattered amongst the paragraphs and it was definitely one of the reasons I was hooked! I wanted to know WHY and HOW.

Aris is super toxic and I LOVE it. Aris is morally grey when it comes to Mary, but super morally evil when it comes to everything else - which makes the story even better. This book is the first of its kind that I read. Most of the books I read have similar plots (which is fine bc that’s what I love) but this one was so different that it was unpredictable which was amazing. The idea of a god essentially possessing a human is a novel storyline for me! Lauren pulls an SJMish move with possibly multiple love interests (no spoilers), and the love triangle makes everything more interesting. I also enjoyed the dynamic between Aris and Mary - super toxic and possessive but it’s my red flag! It makes me melt every time.

Possession ends on a sort-of cliffhanger which just makes me eager for the sequel! Overall, I gave this book 4.5⭐️ and can’t wait to continue Mary and Aris’ story.

I am so thankful Lauren reached out and introduced her book to me. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Possession is quite a dark book with a homicidal god stuck inside someone’s body. Although it’s a really good concept, I feel like it wasn’t executed very well. However, this was the first time that I read dark, dark fiction with an evil character, and I think it might just not be my kinda vibe. I did like the idea of the magic world - I just wish we got a bit more of the world building for it.

The character relationship between Aris and Mary was great. I really like this complex relationship and how not everything is good and bad, black and white. I do feel that some characters were forgotten about while the book was progressing.

The pacing of the book was quite slow, and I wasn’t sure what the plot was and where it was going. Perhaps it was the intention, but it was frustrating that Mary had no idea what was going on and out of the loop of everyone’s plans.

I also feel that the story did a lot of ‘telling’ rather than ‘showing’, with a lot of monologues from Mary.

Overall, I feel like my lower rating may have been due to the genre, as I don't normally read dark fiction. Take my review with a pinch of salt, as you may like these things.

“There is no end to what I will do to keep you.”

Mary was in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Aris came to this world three years ago, causing chaos in his attempt to destroy the world. But, then the mages came and trapped Aris in a mortal body - her mortal body. During their dual possession, they are secured away in a cell where their only companionship lies in one another. Mary is the only thing standing between Aris and the end of the world.

This book, you guys. I was hooked on the plot from reading the summary. A god trapped in a mortal’s body? Cults, magic, and an obviously possessive MMC? Say no more. Lauren did an amazing job with her elaborate storytelling. The plot is enthralling, drawing you in and refusing to release you. I was unable to put this read down unless necessity demanded so. I had not read a story about a god trapped in a mortal’s body until this book and the way the possession is described is so interesting in itself. The only disappointment you’ll have is the book ending. Impatiently awaiting book two in this duology.
