I thought this book did an excellent job of explaining the science behind why avalanches happen.

Young readers can learn about some of the deadliest avalanches in history as well as what makes them occur. Heavy snow can cause avalanches but so can heavy weight or movement on snowpack. In addition to learning about how some individuals managed to survive during an avalanche, readers will also learn how scientists are working to predict and prevent them from occurring. There are several stock photographs showing lots of snow as well as some of the search-and-rescue teams responsible for saving those trapped in avalanches. There are even dogs that do this. The author mentions the possible effects global warming is having on various regions such as the Himalayas, causing more avalanches.
