Appearances can be deceiving… After a whirlwind romance and three years of marriage, I’d tried to be a good wife.
My husband Tom is always watching, controlling my every move. He chooses my clothes, my hairstyle, even instructing what and how much I’m allowed to eat – just ten mouthfuls.
I’ve become isolated from those I love, forbidden to work and stuck at home to fulfil his every whim. My identity along with my life is long gone. I am slowly suffocating but I know Tom will never, ever let me leave alive.
But a chance encounter with Savanah changes everything. Tom just couldn’t tear his eyes away from her. I hoped she might be my saviour. What if I asked for her help? Paid her to steal my husband away? Could my husband’s desire for another woman be the answer to my prayers, to my freedom?

ADDICTIVE!!! Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.
What an irresistibly compelling, profoundly emotional and anxiety-inducing psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end!! The insane tension, dark humor, suspense, mystery, drama, chaos, spice, jealousy, deceit, action, murder, revenge, gas lighting, perfect pacing, well developed characters, short chapters, unexpected twists and turns and an ending that was unpredictable and left me speechless is what makes this a BRILLIANT thriller!! I devoured this book in one sitting and could not flip the pages fast enough! This is my first read by Gemma Rogers and it did not disappoint! I cannot wait to read more of her books! I absolutely loved this book so much and another thriller to add to my favorites list for 2024!! 💚💚💚💚💚
After a three month whirlwind romance and three years of marriage, Chloe has tried to be a good wife. Her husband, Tom, is always watching, controlling her every move. He chooses her clothing, hairstyle and even instructing her on what and how much she can eat. She has been isolated from those she loves, forbidden to work and stuck at home to fulfill his every whim. It is reasonable to state, Tom is a detestable, manipulative, narcissistic sociopath! Chloe is suffocating and is desperate to get away from him. However, she fears that Tom will never let her leave alive. But a chance encounter with Savannah changes everything. Tom just couldn't tear his eyes away from her. She hoped that Savannah might be the answer to her prayers and freedom. But could Chloe convince Savannah to help her? What length is Chloe willing to go to in order to leave her husband?
Overall, I was completely captivated from start to finish!! If you enjoy an utterly gripping and suspenseful thriller with an explosive ending then this is the book for you! I highly recommend and it deserves all the stars!! ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
✨Content warning: physical and emotional abuse; spice that is not closed door✨
"The Good Wife" promises a thrilling domestic suspense however it fell short of the empowering story I was hoping for. While I thought Gemma Rogers did a good job portraying Tom's character, the execution of Cloe's escape plan was hard for me to buy into and lacked that sense of dread needed to propel the story forward. In today's heightened awareness surrounding domestic abuse, some actions and motivations of the characters were hard to buy into.
Despite these shortcomings, I thought the story offered moments of intrigue, which had me click the pages to see how it all turned out for Cloe.
I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
One of my favourite authors and I know last time I said the same as will say now….this is the their best book to date 😊
Meet Tom Controlling ,bullying, demanding part sociopath, part narcissist and a sprinkling of psychopath husband of Chloe I read many characters who can be classed as ‘love to hate’ but Tom is up there as one of the best (worst) He is manipulative, devious and calculating However he is not quite as untouchable as he thinks and Chloe not quite as timid as she pretends and when Tom thinks he has found an outlet for his desires he doesn’t have a clue the pandoras box he is about to open I was cheering Chloe on throughout and equally loathing Tom on every page It is so well written, pulled me in 100% and kept me there as NEEDED to keep reading to find out just who wins and how Flawless in every way, a truly great read.
This is a book about a husband Tom who has to control every single bit of his wife's Chloe's life.
She meets a woman named Savannah who she is hoping will lure her husband away. This might be her only chance to escape.
This is a book about manipulation, revenge, control and betrayal.
The story is told by 3 pov's that being Tom, Chloe and Savannah. I absolutely detested the character of Tom. My inner dialogue was screaming at him.
Gemma is an author who I discovered last year, and I have been working my way through her backlist, I haven't been disappointed yet. I highly recommend her if you love psychological thrillers.
This is a thriller through and through. And while I read this quickly, and my stomach was in knots for much of the read, this has a spice level a bit too high for me. There are certainly more explicit books out there, but this is most definitely not closed door, and as such, not for me.
However, if you don’t mind spice, this is well-written, and Ms. Rogers really knows how to write suspense. My stomach hurts! My heart went out to Chloe, and I actively rooted for her from the first few pages. As soon as I read about the “rule of ten”, I knew exactly what kind of man Tom was.
Fair warning: there’s a lot of despicable behavior in here. There’s abuse, SA, and domestic violence galore.
If you see signs of abuse, please speak up!! I know there are women and men out there who are trapped in abusive relationships. Let’s help each other. Abusers isolate their victims. Make sure that your loved one knows that she/he can always count on you to be there for them, no matter what. You may just be their lifeline to get out.
I received an advance copy from NetGalley and Boldwood Books (thank you!), and all opinions expressed are my own.
Your typical domestic thriller, but with atrocious punctuation and caricature characters. Reminded me of Behind Closed Doors, but a bootleg version.
Good:
• Touches on difficult topics such as abusive relationships and violence against sex workers. There's room for improvement but I appreciate the intention nevertheless.
Bad:
• The writing was bland and overly passive: Lots of 'I did this, I did that'.
• The plot was thin and predictable: I kept waiting for the big explosion and twist that never came.
• None of the relationships had any development: Hard to see or buy why some people bonded more than others.
• The characters were stereotypical and one-dimensional: Tom's POV was super laughable and didn't sound like a realistic human being. Savannah showed some promise and spark, but alas.
I expected this to be WOW after all the stellar reviews but the only thing that wowed me was how it has one of the worst use of punctuation I've ever seen in a book and the lack of editing. Not just occasionally but throughout the whole novel... yikes. It was grating and spoiled the reading experience for me.
There were also too many loose ends. The only upside is that this was a breezy and fast read, but only because it has not much substance.
Solid read. I always get sucked into the stories of the horribly controlling and abusive husband and the woman trying to flee. Shockingly though, I really liked reading about Savannah, the escort. The books switches perspective between Savannah - the escort, Chloe - the trapped and abused wife, and Tom - the controlling, disgusting, husband. It all starts at a party for Tom’s company where he wins the raffle ticket. Well you don’t just win a bonus but an evening with Savannah. Tom likes that and goes back for more. Chloe finds out and starts paying Savannah to make him fall in love with her. Savannah then starts to see Tom’s true colors and becomes afraid of him and afraid for Chloe’s life. Chloe has tried to leave several times and always gets caught or tricked. On the evening of the last company party, Tom (who is planning on killing his wife and running away with the insurance money and Savannah) uses Savanah’s services and leaves her tied up in the bedroom. When he comes out, it appears she has been killed. (Fun fact she ends up okay! Whew!) Tom tries to take Chloe and run but it doesn’t work. He goes down for attempted murder. He’s locked away, Chloe moves in with her parents, she gets better mentally and physically, she stays friends with Anita, and she starts dating Ben. The end.
I felt like the epilogue was rushed and too much was crammed into it. I would have preferred a bit more to the story to watch it all unfold.
Also all signs point to Anita as the one who actually hurt Savannah to frame Tom.

Tom is a complete narcissist, trying to control everything in his marriage. His wife, Chloe, has been emotionally abused for years.
At Tom’s company party he learns he has won the raffle… $5000 and a liaison with a high-priced escort… wink, wink.
Chloe finds out about the liaison and her husband’s continued relationship with Samantha, the escort. Chloe goes to Samantha and says she will pay her to get her husband to fall in love with her.
This book is a true page turner. Told from all three perspectives, it really kept me guessing.
Warning: a high level of spice with way too many specific sex scenes for me.
I’m still going to read everything this author writes! :)
I requested this book on Netgalley as Into The Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes is one of my favourite reads ever, and I hoped it would be in a similar vein.
Chloe and Tom are married. Tom is a total narcissist and has Chloe well and truly under his control. When Chloe realises he is playing away with the lovely Savannah, she hatches a plan to try to escape but all doesn't go as she would like.
Told in a 3 person narrative, Chloe's, Tom's and Savannah's, we get every character's POV. None of the characters are particularly likeable or endearing in any way, Tom being especially despicable. Short snappy chapters keep you hooked, however the story really ends up going nowhere. The ending imho isn't good and I was left disappointed and with so many questions 😞 I was so invested and wanted a triumphant ending for Chloe and for her to go out with a roar. I got a rushed and hurried, unbelievable ending that whimpered out rather than roared.
I received The Good Wife from NetGalley for free for an honest review. Major trigger warning. This book deals with both physical and mental abuse, infidelity, and sex work. I feel like I have seen this story before- a hardworking man gets a woman to fall for him and then he isolates and abuses her. She then tries to get out of the relationship. I found the story to be predictable and was able to figure out almost everything that happened in the story. None of the characters were likable and all had major flaws. There were also a lot of superfluous characters- gardener, mother in law, wives of business partners, and a lucrative art dealer. I was not really rooting for anyone in this book. There were also a lot of story lines that did not fully tie up at the end of the book- the biggest one being misused business funds that they talked about quite frequently but sort of just fell off in the story. It was a quick read and did not require a lot of mental focus, but I would not recommend.
The Good Wife is an absolutely unputdownable domestic thriller and it had me utterly captivated right from the very start. This was a book that I found myself so absorbed in that I honestly couldn’t put it down . I just had to know how the whole situation was going to end. I had so many theories going through my head. Tom was one of the most despicable characters I have ever come across and I just wanted to shout out to his wife Chloe to run ! There were other characters to some nice and others not so nice. Packed full of tension and drama this is one book that is going to stay in my mind for quite a while. From start to finish this is a complete page turner and I think one of the best I’ve read by Ms Rogers.
I absolutely devoured this book. I loved everything about it. It just pulls you right in and doesn't let go till the very last page. Excellent well written characters and everything is finalized at the end of the story. Definitely all the stars from me.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an early release of this book.
Coming back to this to write this review. This book was AMAZING. I stayed up til 12:15AM to finish reading it & I NEVER stay up late. I read 90% of the book in a day and could not put it down. This is my 2nd book by Gemma Rogers and she is a British icon IMO. Very underrated author. If you like Freida, you'll love Gemma. She's not afraid to spill the tea & spice into her thrillers. She knows how to make you HATE a character as well. Wowwie I loved this one & will continue to read her work.
Really enjoyed this book, loved how the story unfolded from the perspective of 3 characters, really worked well. It wasn't the ending I had predicted based on the story unfolding, great twist and was nice that Tom got his just what he deserves even though it wasn't him. I like the ending gave everyone the life they deserved.
"Na een stormachtige romance en drie jaar huwelijk heb ik mijn best gedaan een goede echtgenote te zijn. Maar mijn man Tom houdt me voortdurend in de gaten. Hij bepaalt wat ik draag, hoe mijn haar zit en zelfs wat ik mag eten, tot op de hap toe.Ik leef in een gouden kooi. Vrienden en familie worden van me weggehouden en werken mag ik niet.
Mijn wereld draait alleen nog om hem. Mijn identiteit is verdwenen - samen met mijn vrijheid. En één ding weet ik zeker: Tom laat me nooit levend gaan.Totdat we Savanah ontmoeten.
I’m finding myself completely consumed with the thrillers Gemma Rogers writes. Can’t wait to read more; if you’ve not checked out her books yet, I definitely recommend that you do!
Loved this story of a woman finding her strength despite the disgusting control her husband tries to use to dictate her life.
Well what a book !!! Controlling husband Tom - I just wanted to get her out of there and fast - he was so awful to her it made me angry. A really good listen and a good story throughout. Well written.
What can I say. It’s just too much trash. None of the characters are all that likeable including the wife who is horribly mistreated by her farce of a husband but despite being someone with more options than not, continues to make bad decisions about her own path to freedom. The other characters are equally undeveloped. It feels forced and juvenile. Plus, it needs an editor. I wanted a quick read but this was just bad.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Gemma Rogers, Boldwood, Book & Tonic, Bold Book Club and Rachel's Random Book Tours .
Publication date 5th March 2024
This is the second book I have read by this author. I have also read 'The Flatmate' which I would also highly recommend.
This novel consists of 105 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
'The Good Wife' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Gemma discusses adultery, manipulation and domestic abuse.
Absolutely loved this fast paced, gritty and unputdownable psychological thriller filled with emotions and secrets!!!
This book is fantastically written with vivid descriptions that absolutely grip the readers attention and puts them right in the middle of it all making your heart pound and you constantly second guessing.
Another huge success by the fantastic Gemma!!! This book had me hook, line and sinker from the first page and I could not put it down!!! Every time I said one more chapter it ended on a cliffhanger and I just had to know what was going on!!! This kept on happened over and over until before I knew it I had devoured the whole book in one sitting!! If you are going to read this then clear your day because it is truly unputdownable. I started this this morning and finished it at approx 2pm, reading it in one sitting. This book tells the story of Chloe who is fed up off her husband's controlling ways. When Chloe finds a possible way to escape her husband with the help of Savannah she grabs the opportunity and hopes for the best. However, things never are as simple as they seem and with an addictive gripping storyline filled with blackmail, adultery, the rich, an escort, suspense, abuse, tension and an ending you wont see coming this is one book to sink your teeth into!! Gemma weaves this fantastic and unique storyline perfectly taking the reader on a rollercoaster ride through the eyes of Chloe, Tom and Savannah ensuring they can see and feel everything that each of them are doing. Will Chloe be able to escape Toms clutches? Will Savannah be able to escape her current life? Will Tom get what he wants? Well, grab your copy of this action packed suspense filled page turner now to find out!! The ending left me mind blown and still not 100% on who did what which has left me still thinking about it hours after I put the book down which is definitely a sign of a fantastic author!! It is ram packed with twists, turns and surprises you'll never see coming. I definitely didn't and I have read hundreds of crime and psychological books so a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS Gemma!!! It is getting harder and harder to surprise me but you managed it in this successful, chilling and page turning psychological thriller!!! Gemma's fantastic and evocative writing skills ensures you are sucked into the lives of the characters feeling your heart pounding and the hair on your arms raise. This book is rammed with suspense and tension and will keep you biting your nails, on the edge of your seat with your heart pounding while your flipping the pages because you just cant stop. I loved the fantastic ending that left me wanting to pick up more of Gemma's books and get stuck straight in.
Clear your schedules before sinking your teeth into this epic thriller as once you've started you wont be able to stop turning the pages until you've devoured it in one sitting!
The authors evocative writing skills brings each of the characters to life and leaves you feeling that you are standing next to them as their story unfolds and lives start to tumble around them. Each of the characters were realistic, unique, well rounded and strong characters which makes it a realistic read. Gemma uses multiple protagonists so we get to see the story told through the eyes of Chloe, her husband Tom and Savannah. Gemma does an absolutely amazing job of weaving their storylines together ensuring it is a smooth read while making sure the reader gets to see everything that the main characters are doing and how they are feeling, up until a certain point. I absolutely despised Tom who is a chauvinistic, disgusting, abusive piece of …. well, I'm sure you can get my drift without me getting myself banned from sites for using certain word! He absolutely made my skin crawl and I despised him!! My heart went out to Chloe and my heart broke for her. Unless you have been in that position then it is easy for people to say to just leave but it is not always that easy. i was rooting for her from the start. I also really liked Savannah who was just trying to get through her studies through means that she knows. Again, many people would despise what Savannah is/does but at the end of the day she is single and does not make anyone do anything they do not want to. I was pleasantly surprised as I wasn't a fan of her immediately with her attitude towards Chloe on their first meeting but she grew on me and I came to like and respect her. Chloe is such a relatable character and I really hoped both herself, her friend Anita and Savannah would each get their happy endings. Whether they do or not, well I cant tell you that can I? There were many more characters weaved into the storyline and I must admit many of them were unlikeable from the rich and snobby housewives to the disgusting cheating men. I normally struggle to get into books where there are so many despicable characters but Gemma creates such an amazing storyline with these characters that I love to hate them and I loved the book from beginning to end! I don't want to risk saying more about how I felt about the characters as I don't want to give anything away to future readers but I will say that I was annoyed, angry, upset, disappointed, disgusted, pleased and more at the different ones for many different reasons!! Gemma really does bring the characters emotions to life and feeds them directly to the reader with her fantastic writing skills. Regardless of whether you love them or hate them they each played their parts perfectly!!!
Congratulations Gemma on yet another addictive, chilling, page turning psychological thriller with an ending I did not see coming! i cannot wait to get hooked into your next guaranteed page turner!!
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the prologue of Gemma's 'The Flatmate' which I have actually read myself and would highly recommend!!
Overall an addictive and gripping emotional rollercoaster of secrets, family, suspense, tension and everything you could want in a gripping thriller!!
356 pages.
This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle, free with kindle unlimited and £9.99 in paperback via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 5/5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.
Feel free to add me on Goodreads or follow me on my website or Facebook for more reviews
I definitely enjoyed reading this book but do have some issue with it. The book did drag a little in areas and the ending was super rushed, which was a bit annoying given how long the book was in other areas.
I found it a bit weird that Chloe kept waiting to leave, even after her decision had been made. I understand people staying in abusive relationships, but Chloe had decided to leave, she kept changing the leave date for literally no reason, it was obviously just a way to prolong the plot. I also didn’t really buy that she would care so much about the Polaroids. Like she isn’t some public figure who everyone would recognise. There just seemed to be plenty of reasons for her stay, but the author just seemed to wing it a little bit there.
The ending! Urgh who tried to kill Savannah and why!!? Like the only two possibilities would be Anita and Chloe but there was absolutely 0 indication as to which one. I personally think it was a mistake leaving that open ended and a last page confession would have been much better.

Thank you Boldwood Books and NetGalley for an early copy of The Good Wife. Way toooooo much sex, the first half of the book was just tooooooo much but if you can get past it, the second half is worth it!!! What a despicable character Tom was, atrocious. I felt for Chloe and I liked Savannah. They never did clear up the last part which I didn’t like. It wasn’t one of my favorites,
