Norse Warrior Protectors #1

Berserker Obsession

Rate this book
He’s a duty-sworn warrior who knows only how to conquer and dominate.
Chaos and infighting rule the Norse Gods’ council. The conflict spreads to modern-day Midgard, where immortal Norseman Leif Skarsganger commands a unit of Odin and Freya’s elite soldiers. One night, while under attack from Loki’s sinister monsters, a dark-haired beauty with superior combat skills helps defeat the enemies. Wounded and feverish, Leif kisses her, inadvertently triggering a Norse handfasting bond. His inner berserker insists they’ve found their mate. If Leif doesn’t find her quickly, he’ll succumb to permanent battle fury and become a danger to the very people he’s sworn to protect.

She’s a genetically engineered soldier who refuses to follow orders.
Naya Brisbane escaped from a covert training camp aimed at creating the ultimate soldier. Forced injections gave Naya increased cognitive abilities and physical strength, but put her brother into a coma. Desperate to finance a cure for him, Naya works as a cyber-security expert on the shady side of the law. Hunted by rogue agents who want her back in the lab, the last thing she needs is for the tall blond she helped in a moment of weakness also to make her his prey.

The chemistry between them flares hotter than an inferno. But if neither yields, they’ll burn the world.
When Naya discovers that the stranger and his band of warriors have a state-of-the art medical research facility, she joins their fight but reveals nothing about her brother. And Leif keeps secrets of his own. He has to make Naya fall in love with him to complete their handfasting, or the gods must call him back to Valhalla, triggering the end of the worlds–for both gods and humans.

Vikings, Valkyries, Paranormal Romance mixed with Norse Mythology?

Yes, please.

A kickass female hero who doesn't put up with alpha male bullshit and can take down more enemies than the hero?

Yeah, girl!!

If you like PNR, this is a refreshing change of pace from the vamps and weres.
There is a gang of Vikings living on Earth and fighting Loki's minions. The king of the Vikings, Leif, is drugged and almost killed by some baddies, but our girl, Naya, saves his ass by killing them all and calling his buddies. This starts our romance, but it is anything but insta-love. Although Naya is attracted to Leif, and is even willing to tap that, she isn't interested in a relationship with a guy who has ideas about women from before the middle ages.

Like most PNR series, there is a large group of characters who will each get their story and we met many of them. Unlike most PNR series, I liked the women more than the male characters. It is really awesome that the females aren't whiney, weak, or catty. They have strong personalities but aren't bitches. It's just another thing that made this book a great new find in the PNR genre.

2/3 Vikings, Always Stars

I don't think I should even try to review/rate this, because really...VIKINGS.

nuff said.

No? Not enough? Alright then.

Immortal vikings on Earth, defending us from Loki's minions and his evil plans + warrior spirits + mad scientist creations + enhanced cyberexpert female soldier + loose Nordic mythology + soulmates + reticence= this mess of a book. It could have been kinda awesome. I had fun, my friends, I had fun. I'm not even sure why. I just couldn't take this seriously and I laughed quite a bit, especially during the first section of the book. It was so just over the top and so very little believable I could only go with it. The cluelessness of the vikings who had to be helped by the heroine, the raging teen-like sexual tension, the heroine resisting every time but just about a few secs before giving in to her wants...I mean, the tropes, the tropes...I enjoyed myself brainlessly with Naya, king Leif and his viking warriors. Then we hit the, apparently, inevitable wall of mistrust, assumptions, reticence, half truth, Alpha's short moments of showdown (thank God Leif had just a few episodes), defiance, stupid choices...and of course both leads suffer terribly apart, while a good, old talk sharing feelings, fears, full information on the whole bonding thing, past wives and sick brothers would have easily prevented it. Of course, why talking when you can create drama? Sorry, my bad.

After this grating part, the book was quickly, very quickly wrapped up. Naya kicks ass and fights next to Leif, real declarations of love are shared, the bond finally healed and accepted, she's initiated as a true Valkyrie and they get formally engaged. Everybody happy and everybody cool, Odin and Freya approving.

How was the sex? Surprisingly chaste, sparse and kinda realistic, on the flat side. You would expect much more from prn/uf, especially with the soulmate trope and instalust. I cringed here and there at the choice of words, but there were no crazy gymnastics. Pretty basic stuff. Not even a handjob or a blowjob. Naya is the fortunate recipient of the one time oral sex is shown, good for her. I was expecting something more from yummie Leif, but in a way it was refreshing. I liked the sexual tension, even more the fact he needed some kind of physical contact all the time. I can totally relate to that. Also, I would like my own berserker, please, and to float towards the gods after stellar orgasms, because I'm totally worth it.

So, don't take it seriously, don't expect too much from the plot, try not to get mad at the stupid stuff and you'll possibly grin for a little while.

What is it about Vikings that makes them so seemingly perfect for romance ? From the Kirk Douglass / Tony Curtis movies that my mum loved so much to the rather tasty Thor in the modern Marvel franchise there's just something that seems so heroic. Add in their amazing Gods, myths and legends and I can easily see why so many are captivated by the Vikings. Yes partying in Asgard sure does seem like a great thing to do!
I was intrigued by this book with it's band of warriors led by their King Leif and the very idea that they each possessed their own inner berserker was not something I'd seen much of before. Now add in a heroine who has been genetically modified to be what I can only describe as a super soldier and you can see that ancient meets modern and then some! Naya is not the only one experimented on though and when she first encounters Leif she actually saves him! Yes I know it doesn't exactly sound like Leif is terribly big and bad ( actually he really is!) but his opponents have poisoned him but he hasn't forgot the female who he rewarded with a kiss! That kiss awakens so much more than just passion though it awakens his inner berserker and it's shouting Mine, Mine, Mine!
I wasn't initially sure how I felt about this story if honest. The synopsis said 352 pages and yet I seemed to be getting through it quite quickly ( halfway before I knew it!) and I was a bit confused as to why our heroine Naya had been experimented on. There is a revelation at the end which made sense but I just wanted to know a little more about the nefarious agency and it's scientists motives.
Leif and his warriors are charged by Odin and Freya to protect the world from Loki as it's prophesied he alone will cause and survive Ragnarok or the end of the world . My problem here was where is Loki? What did add so much to the story however were the interactions between the various characters surrounding Leif and Naya. These ancient Vikings use magic and modern technology but still seem stymied at times. I liked the curmudgeonly Harald who acts as Leifs second in command but think the two Valkyries have really interesting stories to tell. They are so very different , one is warlike and fierce whilst the other is gentle and a healer . Luckily as I got to the final third of this story I really started to enjoy the plot a lot more. As for the romance well Leif is a very possessive lover but he has his hands full as Naya is a woman on a mission! I can say no more as it would spoil the book for others but these hot passionate warriors entertained me and the Norse mythology just added to it.

I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review

ARC Review
Originally posted at: Scandalicious Book Reviews

Stories with mythology always peak my interest. Perhaps, it began with my obsession with Isis on Saturday morning television. As an adult, I’ve enjoyed Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and Kane Chronicles series and Elisabeth Naughton’s Eternal Guardians. Recently, I developed an obsession with the Vikings series on the History Channel. All of this is to explain why I grabbed up and had high expectations for Viking Warrior Rising.

Viking Warrior Rising is book one in Asa Maria Bradley’s new Viking Warriors series. It revolves around a group of Viking warriors led by King Lief Skarsganger. Lief is tasked by Odin to protect the human realm and prevent Loki from causing Ragnarök, the time when the enemies of Norse gods team up to trigger natural disasters to wipe out gods and humans. With the aid of a new poison, Loki’s minions are disabling the warriors and making them susceptible.

Naya is kidnapped as a child and raised as a lab rat, injected with a mysterious serum that enhances her mental and physical abilities. She escapes and returns to rescue her brother who is virtually comatose from his cocktail of injections. Making her living as a cyber security expert, Naya keeps a low profile in order to prevent from being discovered as she desperately seeks a cure for her brother.

As Naya and Lief’s paths cross, they discover that she is Lief’s själsfrände, his true mate. Lief more easily accepts their fate, but he must convince Naya she is the chosen one for him.

In terms of the mythology, I feel like I am watching a Thor movie. Familiar characters are introduced – Odin, Freya, Loki – but are not the primary players. I like the premise of the story, but would like to see more of the gods play a part in the narrative. I am sure Loki has a lot of mischief planned for the Vikings and humans.

As a paranormal romance, this is all too familiar. There is an enhanced woman whose meets a paranormal hero. They discover that they are fated to be together. Often times, the heroine will be a modern woman paired with a traditional or old-fashion hero. This causes conflict that will have to be resolved for them to have a happily ever after. This part is a little disappointing. I did not expect such a traditional and well-played trope. With the untraditional mythology, I was hoping for a more creative storyline. Nonetheless, the story is well written and there is enough interest here for me to continue with the series.

I literally finished this in less than 5 hours, I forgot what it's like to be constantly reeled in by the storyline. A quick and enjoyable read with Norse mythology and romance. I highly enjoyed myself while reading this novel.

4 complex and fascinating stars for Viking Warrior Rising. The read was a nice change from most of the contemporary stuff I've been reading. I do love fantasy and Mythology! I wasn't wowed and thrown for a loop but I liked the story just fine. Leif was by far my favorite character just because he was great. I found I liked Naya but didn't love her.

The story swirls about between what is supposed to be myth and contemporary life. Naya didn't have a normal upbringing by any standards and so finds it hard to trust other people. She's not a normal human being, either, which is why she's had such a hard life. She saves Leif to which leads the two through the novel.

Leif is a king and ruler of the warriors who are meant to keep the peace and human world safe. I really enjoyed Leif because he was an old soul and wise. He was also passionate, understanding, caring, and powerful. He's loyal to those he is responsible for and to himself. I can't help it, I'm all about warriors and such.

Adoro a las valkirias, toda la onda de los vikingos y la mitología nórdica me vuelve loquita.

Es quizás por ese motivo que esperaba que me gustara más este libro.

No es malo, pero sin duda no es grandioso.

Well let's see...immortal Viking warriors, enhanced humans, soul mates, lab experiments, and a deadline...
No brainer here! I grabbed it!
The exciting world of Norse mythology and Vikings come to life was heady stuff. For an opening story to a series this one did a fantastic job of setting up the series plot and offering up the first romance and volley in the battle between Loki's minions and Odin and Freya's warriors.

The story begins when Naya Brisbane who has been hiding out in the world returns to the lab that captured her and experimented on her to retrieve her younger brother. He is in a bad way and the experiments have poisoned his system instead of enhancing him to be a super warrior like they did her. Naya gets him to safety and then leaves to keep those who would recapture them from tracing his location through her. Naya is a brilliant cyber-security expert and turns to that to fund the treatments for her brother.

Leif is the Viking King of the berserkers and valkyries sent back to earth to protect the humans, stop an end of the world epic battle, and prevent otherworld interference. Leif and his band know that Loki is behind many attempts to send enhanced humans and creatures to destroy the only group that can stop him. Of late, Leif's inner berserker has become harder and harder to manage. There will come a time when the berserker will take over entirely and Leif will have to be put away for the safety of all.

An encounter with a band of new breed of minions who poison him with a new more powerful drug and his rescue by a mysterious warrior human woman from said minions may just be the saving of him. Leif and Naya both have secrets and both have trust issues that keep them from sharing easily. The attraction between them is great, but Naya works hard to ignore it because she must always be alone and Leif doesn't want to give any more than he has to after the losses he suffered the first time. Then their is their tug o war about safety, independence, family, and finding home. Will they put off admitting truths and accepting what they have together too late?

So, this was the opener in a series. It was exciting, action-packed, and full of conflict, but also delivers an engaging cast of new characters, worldbuilding, and the direction of the series arc. The author's knowledge of Scandinavian history and Norse mythology shown through and made for a solid premise of the story.

The band of brothers camaraderie with Leif and his warriors was also an asset. Loved when they went into action or were just hanging around the stronghold.

For me the weak point was the romance. Leif and Naya were both guilty of squirreling away pertinent information. I get that trust was tough, but there is a point when the secrecy was carried too far. Lives are at stake and important things bigger than them or their tightly hoarded secrets. And then there was so much resistance to there being any relationship that when the resolve came I was left with wondering where I was when they resolved the issues that both made so much of for most of the story. The suddenness instead of a gradual acceptance and development was the issue and not the characters themselves. Oh granted, Leif is an arrogant, misogynist Viking leader and Naya is a prickly, fiercely independent loner, but I was good with their pairing. And what's not to like about a big, brawny, possessive Viking as passionate in the bedroom as he is in battle?

I liked the direction of the action part of the conflict. There were a few big exciting scenes and its obvious that though good prevails in the end that there is a lot more to come from Loki's bag of tricks. I look forward to each of the warriors getting their story as this ongoing battle rages.

All in all, this is a good start and I look forward to what is to come. Something a little different in the way of Paranormal Romance that I can easily recommend.

My thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was hooked from the words,”Immortal Vikings are among us.” Mythology and government experiments are the backdrop for a new series that will pit the wills and hearts of immortal warriors against “mere” humans in contemporary times. Leif is the warrior King, his men have been with him for thousands of years, fighting alongside him, protecting him, yet one tiny woman not only saves his life, but teaches him to feel and trust his heart after centuries of burying it deep within the hardened shell of loss.

It took one semi-conscious kiss to begin a bond that even the feisty and unique Naya has trouble fighting. Naya is not a normal human, she is altered and within her body beats the heart, soul and strength of a warrior. But she is on a mission to free someone she loves and she firmly plans on doing it alone. Can the huge Viking King tame the beast within Naya? Can she keep her secrets from Leif or will she tell all, risking losing him forever? Naya has never felt the love and companionship that Leif offers, and she certainly isn’t going to become a meek and timid damsel. The only thing hotter than their tempers is the smoldering heat they create between the sheets. Loki be damned, this Viking King is determined Naya will be his Queen.

Viking Warrior Rising by Asa Marie Bradley is filled with great banter between characters, a sense of fierce loyalty between the Vikings and one bitter female unwilling to take what is offered. She gives as good as she gets when arguing, she can stand with the best of them in battle and her secrets are tearing her up. Asa Marie Bradley has created a richly detailed world, filled with snippets from Norse mythology, the brutal government experimentation destroying lives. What’s not to like? Sensual tension runs high and taut as two beings form different worlds collide in passion and desire. They say, the bigger they are, the harder they fall and this Viking is down for the count!

This is like a modern day plus sci-fi take on the Loki vs the Gods of Asgard mythology. Leif Skarsganger and his fellow vikings are on earth to protect it from Loki's minions. When he is saved by Naya, his beserker takes control and initiates an ancient Norse bond between the two. They're constantly drawn to each other and have an uncontrollable need to be around each other. Naya is on the run from some sort of government agency that experimented on her and her brother too.

This was meh. I didn't like how Leif was all "I am your mate and you must listen to me now" BS. I hate that attitude so much. Like no. Naya was a fucking badass and she didn't need his damn help! He's meddling actually put her in harm's way more than not! I don't like that alpha male shit especially when it's not even right! Leif thinks he's always right and Naya proves more than once that he knows shit.

I didn't enjoy this as much because there was like random sexy scenes inserted. It would be like some crazy action and then all the sudden Naya and Leif are about to get it on and I'm just sitting there like wait what?? Where did their clothes go? And the adversaries they were fighting?

I did like Naya's genius with computers and how they went about figuring out what she is. Her growing friendship with the team's medic was by far my favorite part.

Immortal Vikings, an uber strong mystery woman, Loki causing havoc and an eye catching cover (Yeah, seems I’m liking covers a lot lately, but this one definitely works and is a great representation of Leif *grins*)? I’m definitely down with that and found that I really enjoyed the ride! Viking Warrior Rising is a great blend of fantasy, action and sexual heat with a good dose of mystery and characters that you want to know more about.

Leif, I really liked. He’s got that whole alpha vibe surrounding him, which of course makes sense since he is the king of the group, but he’s not a staunch ‘my way only’ kind of guy, well in most cases, we’ll get to the exception. He respects the abilities of his warriors, trusts them and, being a warrior himself, wants to be by their sides so he can have their backs when in battle. He’s got a good heart and is sexy as all hell, especially when his berserker comes into play.

Naya, I liked the woman and admired her for surviving what she had and taking care of her brother. She’s highly intelligent and extremely strong, yes there were outside influences at play, but she uses those skills more for the side of good than bad, though there is a bit of a grey area at play. But because of these skills the woman did have me wanting to Gibbs smack her a few times. I wouldn’t say she was arrogant per se, because I understood where she was coming from, but she tended to believe that she didn’t need anyone because of them and that got her into trouble.

Their relationship was a rocky one. The sexual chemistry between them was intense due to the connection that made with the Norse bond, but secrets and lack of trust and communication between them as well Leif and his berserker, going all ‘my way only’ on Naya made things that much more difficult. I typically am not a fan of a lot of drama, but considering what each are dealing with, it made sense and I actually found that I wanted to see how it all came a head in the end and how it would be resolved.

Leif’s band of warriors were fun to be around and the learning about the different parts of the world they’d come from and the little details about the various languages totally appeal to the geek in me. Astrid is probably my favorite of all of them, but Irja and Ulf are right behind her and I am really looking forward to learning more about them all.

Ms. Bradley is a new author to me and I found her writing style and voice to be quite engaging and I like how balanced the fantasy, sci-fi and romance elements in the story were as well incorporating the Norse culture into the story. There are some issues that were not resolved, though I wouldn’t call them cliffhangers in any way, but all in all I liked how the story worked itself out.

The Bottom Line: Great start to a new series and can’t wait for the next one!

Picking up this book was kind of like fate. A few months ago I was on the hunt for a viking book; which if you've been reading paranormal, fantasy, historical romance for a while now, you know how rare it is to find a book featuring vikings - especially modern day vikings. I logged on to NetGalley to browse and BAM!, Viking Warrior Rising was on the homepage of titles for review. The cover captured my attention right away and the story was exactly what I was looking for!

Leif Skarsganger, Viking King for his North American region, leads a group of warriors in their quest from the Gods to protect the humans from Loki's demonic minions. Attacked in a dark alley, Leif is outnumbered and outgunned, when rescue comes from an unlikely source. Naya Brisbane sees the large, intriguing male go down under the monsters that have been chasing her and can't leave him to die. Neither of them expected the indisputable and inescapable bond that formed between them in a moment of weakness. Now Leif must find the mysterious Naya and complete their bonding before he looses himself in the berserker's rage but Naya is fighting a battle of her own, one that if Leif discovers the truth of may not only end their bond, but end her life as well.

Asa Maria Bradley has wonderfully and imaginatively blended Norse mythology with modern day civilization to create an enthralling romance that I simply could not put down! Loki, an evil God, is looking to destroy the humans so the Gods have sent warriors down from Valhalla to defend them, these warriors are elite Vikings and Valkyrie. Immortal men and women with strength and power that hunt Loki's minions, deadly werewolf-like creatures, by night. Leaf is leader of his mighty band of warriors and has been hunting these creatures for centuries, but now they have somehow created a drug that can bring down and incapacitate him and his warriors. And he knows that Naya is somehow connected to them. Naya may be technically human, but she has the soul of a Valkyrie, and she is on a mission of her own to save her brother from the laboratory they were raised in and cure him. Naya and Leif were both stubborn, protective, and independent characters who had a definite charge together. They were well matched and explosive when finally getting together, but Naya was beyond frustrating 95% of the story with her bullheadedness towards Leif and his struggles. Then again, Leif could have been a little more forthcoming from the get-go but in the end, it all worked out. ☺

Bradley weaves an intricate world with her vivid story-telling, and the paranormal, mythological and sci-fi aspects worked beautifully together. With an ancient bond, government conspiracies, temperamental Gods, and a house full of hot headed warriors, there was copiousness amounts of action and breathless intrigue to keep me turning the pages. If Viking Warrior Rising is any indication, Asa Maria Bradley is sure to be a dazzling new talent in the romance world!

Naya is constantly on the run, hiding from the people who have kept her captive and experimented on since she was twelve years old. After rescuing her brother and hiding him away in a medical facility it is up to Naya to figure out a way to save them both. Naya has no idea of what she is, what has been done to her brother or herself; but she is determined to keep their hard won freedom. Discovering Leif in a back alley being beaten does not fit in with her policy of keeping to herself and avoiding attention. Naya's conscience won't allow her to leave Leif to the mercy of the men abusing him. After jumping into the fray Naya quickly discovers the attackers are more than mere men.

Saving Leif has triggered more than a simple debt and Naya doesn't understand or want what it means to her. Leif is an immortal Viking sent to Earth to fight the evil plans of Loki to bring about the end of the world as we know it. Leif is the king of the group of Viking warriors who all have berserker spirits that is bound to them. Leif's berserker has recognized Naya as his at a most inopportune time. Leif is busy trying to save the world and Naya is busy trying to save herself and her brother.

Bradley has created an interesting world that merges Norse mythology, modern day society, and action. Both Naya and Leif are strong characters. Leif is dominant and has to fight his tendency to tell instead of ask when it comes to Naya. While Naya is not accustomed to asking for permission before she acts, she has to try to accept what she thought was all myth and fantasy and accept help. With the horrific yet extraordinary things that have been done to her Naya is better equipped to handle what and who Leif and his group of followers really are. The story unfolds smoothly and with enough conflict and action to keep the reader engaged. The world building is solid and the secondary characters have just enough development that future stories can easily be imagined. The small group of Vikings and Valkyrie will make for good future books. VIKING WARRIOR RISING does not end in a cliffhanger, the story is complete, but the story is very much open ended and I look forward to seeing where Bradley leads the story next.

I went into Viking Warrior Rising fully expecting to love it. I mean, a viking warrior king and a badass heroine... What's not to love?! Unfortunately, this one didn't exactly live up to my expectations.

The beginning totally sucked me in. Naya jumping in to help Leif when he's getting his viking butt kicked by some wolverines... Definitely bad ass! Leif kissing Naya and triggering their mate bond... One of my favorite story lines. But alas, things started to go down hill pretty quickly from there.

As the synopsis says, Leif needs to find Naya but she doesn't exactly want to be found. Eventually, she goes to him because she needs help which should have jump kicked the romance, am I right?! Unfortunately that's where this one fell flat for me. The romance, which includes my favorite fated mates trope, should have been the icing on the cake for me but there was so much talk of duty and none of love which totally ruined it for me.

While I enjoyed the action scenes, and was intrigued enough by the story line to finish it, Viking Warrior Rising ended up just being an okay read for me. If you don't mind a hero wanting to bond with the heroine out of duty for his people rather than his desire for his mate then this one might be for you... Unfortunately I need love and connection when it comes to romance.

I picked up this book a while ago and was very attracted to all its themes. The world building is decent but I am not a fan of the discovered paranormal world event. It takes away from the romance.

The heroine is awesome and the hero is a good guy but the fated mate theme (which is one I like) end up hurting the falling in love of the book.

I worry that the larger arc of the series will weaken all of the romances to come.

So, I will try another book in this series but this one was pretty lackluster for me.

I was given this book for my honest review. So there you have it.

Holy damn these men are possessive of their women, "a stab of jealousy pierced Leif’s chest. His berserker growled , impatient with the other male stealing Naya’s attention." When handling his woman patience is a must, "he held his breath, counting to ten. “Look”— he smiled at her and leaned forward—“ I want you. You want me. Why not make it easier on both of us and share a bed?” I really liked this book and it's characters it's going to be one hell of a series.

No, a ver, pongámonos serios.

I chose this audio book from the library based on its title alone. I was expecting (or perhaps simply hoping) for a Viking book. It is not a historical romance. This is a contemporary paranormal story.

Enjoyable. It was not exciting enough that I did not want to stop reading, but it was entertaining enough to finish.

One thing I found odd is every time the hero and heroine orgasm together, their minds take a trip to speak with the gods. It's just weird that the only way they can connect with their gods is through sexual intercourse with each other, and the only time it is completely obvious gods are watching them is when they are having sex.

I would read more books by this author and even listen to more in this series, but they are not next on my list.

For her first book, Asa Maria Bradley presents us with the beginning of a future paranormal series quite promising even if some points are classical.

Leif is the king of one of the groups of Viking warriors sent on Earth by Odin in order to protect the world against Loki’s conspiracy. When he finds himself in a shaky position in front of strange creatures, he receives some help from a young woman with unusual strength and abilities.

You could believe the universe imagined by the author is the same old thing: warriors responsible to protect the humans from a danger, there are many of them in romance. But here not only are they Vikings and Valkyries (because there are women in the group too), but they face creatures and super soldiers created in a lab, mixing mythology and technology. Another twist is the fact that the warrior who doesn’t complete the union with his/her mate becomes insane because of the berserker’s soul inside of him/her, and must be eliminated by the gods.

Leif, the hero, is quite typical: he’s an alpha male used to be in charge, but he respects and trusts his fellow warriors and feels responsible when something goes wrong. When he kisses the heroine and the link is triggered, he’s determined to complete the union without committing more than necessary, because a long time ago, before becoming Odin’s warrior, he lost his wife and his children and he doesn’t want to become attached again. I think seeing the number of centuries is a bit exaggerated, but at the same time it’s so usual in a hero. I loved seeing him disconcerted by the heroine’s repeated resistance to his charms.

Naya is a very interesting heroine: she was locked several years in a lab that turned her in an elite soldier before she managed to escape (the same where the creature are created), and she’s determined to live her life as she wants. What’s more she wants to save her brother who didn’t bear the treatments they had to endure. Add to this the fact she knows Leif is hiding things from her, and she struggles to reject him in spite of the strong attraction between them. She’s strong physically as mentally, and her reasons to keep her own secrets from the hero and his group are definitely understandable. However I thought we pass over the discoveries about her past too fast at the end, but I guess we’ll know more in the next volume.

The secondary characters, namely the group of warriors, are quite likeable, and they highlight the couple and make them and the plot evolve. I was delighted to learn the Valkyrie will be the heroine of the next volume to be published next year (and the synopsis is mouthwatering!).

In short, without being the novel of the year, Viking Warrior Rising is a good introduction novel. As I was struggling to go on with some paranormal series, I’m drawn into a new one. To be continued!

As an immortal warrior tasked with protecting humanity, Leif Skarsganger is shocked when he kisses a dark-haired beauty who fights like a warrior and inadvertently triggers an ancient Norse bond in this spectacular paranormal romance.

Naya has her own secrets and has no intention of sticking around no matter how sexy the warrior is and the reader can’t help but get caught up in all the excitement as Leif struggles to convince Naya that they are meant to be before they run out of time. The chemistry is scorching hot but with secrets on both sides these strong, charismatic characters have a tough battle ahead of them if this relationship is going to overcome an abundance of obstacles. The fast paced smooth flowing plot keeps readers on edge with lots of suspense, excitement, turmoil and romance with the emotional turmoil and the mixing of traditional and modern adding depth and spice to the story.

Lots of anticipation builds as time plays an important factor in Leif and Naya’s relationship and excitement builds as the group soon discover that there may be a connection between the Vikings enemies and Naya’s enemies while unexpected twist keeping everyone on their toes. The scenes and details are well written and capture the imagination making it easy for the reader to become completely absorbed in the story and also makes it easy for the reader to be able to understand the characters motivations while the intriguing events draw the reader in and guarantees that there is never a dull moment.

The author’s debut novel is quite a surprising blend of Norse mythology along with some modern government conspiracy mixed in to create an intricate and fascinating world full of complex and captivating characters and intriguing possibilities. Leif and Naya’s story certainly caught my attention and I can’t wait to find out what happens next in this spectacular new series.

Marie's Tempting Reads Netgalley ARC Review:

Sexy Immortal Vikings, an evil god, and a woman who is a true fighter? GIMME BOOK! That is how I felt as I read the blurb and seen this striking cover for Asa Maria Bradley's Viking Warrior Rising. I was instantly intrigued and I knew I was going to like it. I not only liked it, but actually want MORE in this new series! I haven't read something so spell-binding and sexy since Rebecca Zanetti's new Realm Enforcers book, Wicked Ride! I absolutely LOVED the characters, the action, the chase, and the delicious sex.

The whole-viking -berserker-immortal thing really freaking ROCKED! I am a pretty big fan of anything featuring myths and Gods and when we get several of these things including some fabulous romance, I fell in love. I liked both Naya and Leif and all the secondary characters, including the nasty Loki. I am really looking forward to the next book.

This was written to perfection! Its packed full of hot sex, wicked chemistry, plenty of kick ass vikings and one kick ass woman who can totally take care of herself but who ends up falling hard for her immortal viking. I gave this book a WOWING FIVE SHOOTING STARS! Its my new favorite read!

VIKING WARRIOR RISING is a brilliantly crafted story that has this reader desperate for more!

I loved, loved, LOVED this book! The characters are incredibly dynamic and there is so much heart and spirituality in the writing that it’s easy to connect with. I loved how Norse mythology was the cornerstone of the story and how beautifully it was intertwined throughout.

I literally wanted to get lost in the pages of this magical world full of excitement and danger, honor and tradition, loyalty and fierce pride and family and love.

Leif and Naya have unbelievable chemistry together and I loved every ounce of their page time together. The couple’s attraction is palpable and their love scenes are seductively sensual. No words I could write would ever do the story justice.

Asa Maria Bradley brings a fresh, new voice to the romance world. I highly recommend this book to any romance reader. It’s easily one of the best books I’ve read…ever.

Thank you for writing such a wonderful book, Ms. Bradley. I’m greatly anticipating the next story!

Wasted potential

I would actually give it 2 stars but that hurts the author and it is my personal feelings about the book.
The story just didn’t come together for me. One minute the heroine was absolutely leaving, the next she was gaga over the King. The King was all about getting her to fall for him but not him fall for her. Again, all of a sudden… I love you! What?!
FMC was not going to stay in his room, giving him her reasons (valid ones!). Then all of a sudden she moved cause you know they’re already sleeping together.
The author tried to make him an alpha but failed and he came across as an arrogant misogynist several times.
Like I said - disjointed, lacked imagination worthy of Norse mythology. To be honest, it felt like JR Ward’s Vampire books adopted to a Norse setting.
I am not reading the rest of the series.
