ALL THAT REMAINS is a fast-paced police procedural perfect for readers of JD Kirk, M.W. Craven, and Rhys Dylan.
When human remains are discovered beneath one of Cardiff's busiest roads, DCI Reece and the team are called into action once again.
But the streets of Cardiff are riddled with underground passageways, each with its own story to tell of the city's dark past. Is the find historic? Or is it evidence of a far more recent crime?
And beyond that - where is the rest of the body?
As Reece investigates, he discovers that nothing is as it seems. Everyone is lying. One family, in particular, is hiding secrets of their own.
Dive into this gripping crime series and find out why readers are describing DCI Reece as “One of my favourite detectives, ever.”
6 books into, and a series that continues to deliver in fine crime thrillers laced with sharp humour.
Set in Wales, this series focuses on DCI Bran Rees. When Human Remains are found in a sewer system, Bran and his small close knit team are on the case.
What I have always liked in this series, is that even though Rees is the main focal point and protagonist, his team have big parts to play, mainly this time in Jenkins and Morgan though their parts are probably back seated a little this time as a separate storyline plays out for Yanto, Rees longtime best friend.
With Rees at his obnoxious best, he suddenly finds himself both working a murder case and helping his old friend, and Hanson cleverly manages to utilise elements of one case to help the other.
It’s good stuff, that races by as the chapters are short and punchy, Rees suffers no fools, has a quick wit and no time for rules when a case needs solving and Jenkins continues to try and keep her boss in check….
Rees is a character who is changing slowly as the books go by, on this evidence, I hope there are a lot more books to come in this excellent series.
Every time Liam Hanson releases a new instalment in this series, I have no doubt it will be a belter. I always enjoy returning to Reece, his team, and friends. I really feel like I know them and have done for quite a few books! The characters are so well developed and vivid that I can't help but love everyone surrounding Reece (OK and Brân Reece, too). This time, the investigation surrounds body parts being discovered. I will leave the plot as I don't want to spoil anything. Read it if you want to know more. The author deftly weaves a story that has many twists along the way. I was intrigued to find out everything and was turning the pages so quickly. Still, I laugh and chuckle at Brân Reece and the way he is. If Liam Hanson is anything like Brân we would get on like a house of fire! Brân is a character I love for his ways and words. Book 6, but still as refreshing and interesting as I found this series in Book 1. The worst part of finishing this book is actually waiting for the next! A five star highy recommended series! Thanks to the author for my gifted copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
As if it’s not bad enough that a set of bones have been unearthed by workmen under a road in Cardiff, probably a friar brutally killed during the reformation, a very recent severed head is also found and DCI Brân Reece has another murder case on his hands. With no replacement for Ginge yet, his main team in the Regional Murder Squad is now just DS Elan Jenkins and DC Ffion Morgan under Chief Supt Cable based at Cardiff Bay police station. With a shortage of pathologists, not helped by the fact that Elan’s ex-girlfriend Cara Frost has announced a move to Scotland, maybe forensic anthropologist Dr Ruth Ellis can help with a reconstruction of the skull to help identify the victim. Finally the head is identified but there’s still a missing body. Meanwhile Edward Collier’s partner has disappeared. Janet Allsop told him she was taking a trip to her daughter’s house in Aberystwyth and has never returned home. Her employee says he didn’t drive her to the station. Her daughter was away. Her daughter’s husband claims the visit was never arranged. One of them is clearly lying. And there’s someone with a possible connection to Billy Creed involved which is never a good sign. With a few likely suspects, can Reece and the team solve this baffling crime? This has been one of my absolute favourites series since the very first book was originally published and I can certainly recommend every story where the reader will learn the full background on the wonderful array of characters they contain. Reece is still driving Chief Supt Cable to despair at times, but she always shows her support for him when it is needed, particularly when ACC Harris is on the warpath. Reece gets results. At times he is still haunted by his wife’s death, but is coping a little better with his new and extremely loveable companion Redlar and his long-suffering best friend Yanto, and it was good to have an input from Maggie Kavanagh once again. Building on the history of the series, it’s another excellent story, full of great settings like the Bannau Brycheiniog, very likeable characters, and a clever suspenseful twisty plot with some nice humour too.
Book 6 in the DCI Brân Reece Series of books set in Cardiff, Wales. This time Reece and his team are called to the scene of a discovery of skeletal remains, only to find, near these old remains, a black bag with a severed head in it. Alongside the murder investigation Recce is also trying to help his best friend Yanto who has been hiding a terrible secret since his childhood.
Briefly, Edward Colliers partner has disappeared on a trip to visit her daughter. But she never actually got there, her daughter wasn’t expecting her and the person who was supposed of been giving her a lift to the train station knew nothing about it. Where is Janet Allsop?
I do enjoy this series and the team of people Reece has around him. I will say though that I thought his curmudgeonly ways went a bit too far at times. He is so rude to his colleagues and some of his actions and the way he speaks to his superiors would surely not be tolerated! That said he is a character that I can’t help liking in his determination to ‘catch the bad guys’ and we got to see how far he would go to support a friend. This was a very good twisty plot and I didn’t work out who the killer was until the reveal. Another good case in this excellent police procedural series, great plot, snatches of humour and fabulous characters. 4.5⭐️
Liam Hanson writes gripping, gritty police procedurals; this book is no exception. The first chapter had me scratching my head as to how it would play out as a case for DCI Reece and the team ~ I needn't have worried, as the author quickly drew me into an investigation that would call on all their skills to solve it.
As always, while Reece is the main character, each team member plays their part. Alongside the main murder investigation is a storyline involving Yanto, Bran's longtime best friend, which sees him leaving the team at a crucial point to stop Yanto from doing something stupid. Reece manages to rub his senior officers up the wrong way at almost every step ~ as usual, but they acknowledge that Reece will get the job done albeit grudgingly
I love this series, partly because of its primary location in Cardiff, a city I spent many happy years living in; but mainly because of the fast-paced punchy writing peeling away the layers to get at the truth. And as if that wasn't enough the author manages to inject humour into the mix.
Liam Hanson has developed and grown DCI Reece as a character over the series and while the changes may be subtle, they are definitely there. Hopefully, there will be more to come in further books in the series?
Staying true to his signature style, Liam Hanson has once again given us a book that combines an unsettling murder with the dark humour that I am so fond of.
Reece is a favourite character of mine. His unwavering sense of what is morally right, and following through with that, regardless of the consequences with his senior (not superior :P) officers - I love that about him and his team!
The intricate plot twists will keep you guessing and engaged throughout.
As a side note, I shall be keeping a close eye on the waterways when next I am in Cardiff - hoping not to see any severed limbs!
This is a gripping storyline and plot with many twists and strong characters. It also has lovely descriptive. It kept me guessing, and I never did get it right. A thoroughly enjoyable book from beginning to end. I have grown to love the character DCI Bran Reece more and more. He is a grumpy, quick-witted, cantankerous character who breaks rules and doesn't suffer fools gladly. He believes in going all out to bring those to justice much to Chief Superintendent Cables despair. I like the banter between him and his team, DS Elan Jenkins and DC Ffion Morgan. I very much look forward to the next book in the series. My thanks to the author This is my honest and unbiased review.
Human remains found buried beneath a road are a great way to start a story. The Regional Murder Squad is called in just in case of any foul play and a disgruntled DCI Brân Reece arrives at the scene. Why disgruntled? Well it's raining heavily and it doesn't take much for the DCI to have a moan! This is how he is, easily irritated, quick to answer back regardless of who he offends or their rank but having said that, he's a very likable character, a smart cookie, great at his job and he gets results....his way! It's a grizzly intriguing plot and not everyone is as honest as your led to believe. A great sideline story involving Reece's best mate Yanto that could get Reece into more trouble than he cares about.... his partner/colleague DS Jenkins is at her wits end but she's a hard nut to crack! Love the humourous banter between them and the way he winds up his 'senior' officer! This is a clever edge of your seat police thriller which pulled me in immediately and never let go. A lot of my favourite characters come into play that I have grown to love over the series and enjoy catching up with. Excellent as always and can't wait for the next.
All That Remains by Liam Hanson is book 6 in the DCI Bran Reece series. Edward Collier’s partner has disappeared. She was supposedly visiting her daughter. At the same time human remains have been discovered under the road in Mill Street, Cardiff. Dr Ruth Ellis, a forensic anthropologist, is brought in as the remains are thought to be historical. However, a further grizzly discovery is made. The characters are wonderful and add so much to the story. Bran is a law unto himself and rarely does what he is asked/told, only what he feels is right. He does not have much time for authority, especially his superiors, which makes for some fiery exchanges. The interaction between Bran and DS Elan Jenkins is wonderful and full of humour. The same with Yanto, Bran’s neighbour, who is always in trouble with his wife. In fact, there is quite a bit of humour throughout the story. I loved the snippets of historical information. This is a great series.
Congratulations and well done on yet another brilliantly written book which once I started reading it I could not put it down. I Absolutely loved this book and would definitely recommend to other avid readers like me 😊📖
Another good solid read from the author, book 6 in his DI Bran Reece books, great storyline, great characters. It’s great to catch up with the team especially Reece, who is grumpy, cantankerous but oh what a character.
