The Walking Ones is book #10 of the ongoing San Juan Islands Mysteries
“These characters have become like old friends.”
“Adele Plank is a perfectly imperfect protagonist who is as smart as she is tough with a character arc as compelling as any in this genre.”
“My favorite new mystery series.”
“D.W. Ulsterman spins a yarn like no other. His character-driven stories hook me every time and his San Juan series somehow manages to get better with each new release.”
“This author really gets the islands. Awesome series!”
I gave this rating because the author has kept me so. Into these books . I learn more facts about my being in the San. Juan s every time I could go .with my hubby. We lived on Steamboat Island Olympia a and came every summer.
Very much in line with the previous books, the cast of characters Adele meets in Ireland is stereotypical of Irish people and the Irish gypsies in particular.
In the previous book Fin is missing and Adele is concerned for his life thinking the Russians are involved.
Against Roland and Lucas’s advice Adele embarks on quest to Ireland to find Fin. The trip is wrought with deception, misdirection and manipulation. On her arrival Adele meets James Mohan who chooses to leave the traveler (gypsy) lifestyle to join the Garda the sworn enemy of the gypsies who has an alternative motive but is hired to assist Adele.
The plot intricately weaves the history of the Irish peoples and the “Walking Ones”, travelers and gypsies. Describing the differences between the clans and the woman who kept them together. The lore of the Raven Witch and the trek to find her… if she still exists. Her insight is paramount to finding Fin.
The conclusion of the quest ends up in the McGreevey area of Roscommon where Cotton the clan chief and his mother have been looking for an artifact they used for collateral but holds the key to Irelands true unification.
The imagination mixed with highlights of history, mischievous characters, a beautiful landscape, a violent history and a lore of a traveling group of people called the “Walking Ones” make for an enjoyable read and a want for more!
I enjoyed the book as much as the previous books. I recommend four mystery and history buffs!
I enjoyed reading this book even though I'd not read the previous one, and this is in a series. So, that being said, this is a good stand alone book as well.
The characters were well defined and I enjoyed the setting of Ireland. There was a lot of interesting information about the gypsy people, or "travellers" as noted in the book, and the way of life among the Irish people. The mystery of finding Fin however, sometimes got lost in all of the added adventures that the protagonist Adele had going on. Her boyfriend Roland, was mostly felt through her texting to him and so I had trouble building any kind of feelings about him.
The back and forth trust issues between Paddy and James did get to me after awhile, and so I gave it lower stars because of that. At times it felt repetitive, but overall I enjoyed the story very much.
Best mystery series…and set in the San Juan Islands!
Every now and then a book really stand out. The story is interesting, compelling to finish, and characters become so real they feel like friends. There are useful tidbits about life, dealing with adversity, importance of loyalty and friendship sprinkled in.
This series starting with The Writer, has all that, and it has been set in the very special place, the San Juan Islands. After reading the first book in the series, I read the next, and the next, and the next until finishing each book that is available written by Ulsterman. This series has become one of my favorites, I’m spreading the word to other readers, San Juan Islanders, friends and cousins from the midwest and everyone I talk to about books. If you like a well told story, read one, then read them all!
There’s no way to write a review without giving something away, other than to say brilliant writing, Incredible plot lines, beautiful characters with the depth and souls of real people. The interplay of history time, place and ancestry is exquisite! Start with book 1!
Waited along time for this book #10 to be published. Was anxious to read this continuation of the series. I really enjoyed the ending how the crucifix rewarded everyone. Great read now anxious for series #11. D.W, Ulterman a fantastic author.
It’s the best yet in the series. I started reading and didn’t stop for 10 hours. I couldn’t put it down until My eyes said enough. That was yesterday and I finished it this morning. Thank you for writing books that are enjoyable to read.
I admit I thought I wasn't going to like this one as well because it wasn't set in the San Juan's. But, as usual, his writing style and context had me hooked. Another great book. I can't wait for the next installment ❤️
This book finds Adele in Ireland looking for her friend who she fears is in great danger.
The story was interesting but tendered to meander a bit too much rather than get to the action a bit more quickly. I also listened to it with virtual voice narration which is never a good idea. It can be a bit difficult to get into a story because of the flatness of the narration and no separation of voices or thoughts. I can't stop myself from listening whenever audio is available so I will probably need to re-read to really appreciate the story.
