Mills & Boon Desire series delivers powerful, passionate romances…He was only in town for a short spell; long enough to lasso himself some female companionship before heading home for the holidays. Yet the minute rancher Hawk McKenna entered her restaurant, he knew Kate Muldoon was bound to be trouble. Her eyes spoke of long-hidden fears, but her lips and limbs had him hankering to take her to bed.
Sure enough, Kate was desperate for his help, for his protection...for his hand in marriage? The sane thing would be to leave her and head for the hills. Despite his lone-wolf nature, Hawk couldn't turn away. Just how far was he willing to go to keep his lover safe?

This started out as a pretty good white-knight/damsel-in-distress type of story. Then about halfway in, that conflict is completely dropped, never to be seen again. The story goes in a couple of different directions and never regains its momentum, ending on a rushed note as if the author had given up trying out different conflicts, just said the hell with it and wrote "I love you. The End."
Did not like it, it was so so boring. It was just step by step of a relationship and not even a relationship with great Chemistry. It felt like they could have been with any person at all, it didn't feel special like only they could do for each other. Np.
This book could have been a 5-star, but just needed more. I liked the premise of the story, Hawk and Kate. All the parts were there, but at times the story felt like more like an outline rather than the finished product. Still, an enjoyable fast-paced read.
Hawk met Kate when he dropped in to see an old friend while on vacation from his ranch in Las Vegas. Kate was the hostess at his friends restaurant. The attraction was instantaneous and mutual, but she was hesitant due to her last relationship which was verbally abusive.
