Isles of Scilly #2

À cœur ouvert

Rate this book

This is a sweet tale of undeclared love. Two friends who have known each other all their lives, have seen them move on with other relationships, are too afraid to tell each other how they really feel… yes, it’s a formula seen many times before but this doesn’t take away the sweetness of Ellis’s tale.

I liked this book because it was so light-hearted and refreshing – I think I was at a time when I definitely needed some of the romance in my life! I enjoyed the previous book of this series, but this one can certainly be read as a stand-alone. That being said, I liked seeing how previous characters had evolved since the last book and I enjoyed the continuity presented.

Ellis does make a fair few references of the age gap between Kit and Seren: six and a half years difference. For me, I thought it was a bit odd and there were some characters who commented on this difference, including Seren herself. Yet, the age-old argument of Kit being ‘mature for his age’ did not sit with me properly and I think Ellis could have worked around this a little better. Aside from closing the age difference, I think showing more of Seren’s playful side would have made her character appear less jaded. Indeed, Kit is a businessman on the island and I think this is a factor that Seren overlooks.

This aside, I enjoyed seeing whether the two characters would ever take the step to get closer to one another. Throughout the book I was on tenterhooks: will they? Won’t they? It isn’t until the final few chapters do we get a satisfying resolution. It is also at this point that Ellis starts to pave the foundations for the next story (which I am looking forward to hopefully reading in the next few months). There are a couple of other brothers that have yet to have a story featuring them and I am keen to see how the writer creates their tales.

I liked this book because of its easy-going pace. Yes, it is a little predictable but I enjoyed the lack of complexities of the plot. Furthermore, I enjoyed how Ellis kept the significance of the family’s father. We learn in the first book that Kit’s father passed away several years ago and the symbolism of the boat was repeated in this novel during the climax of Kit and Seren learning about their feelings. I hope this continues.

With a lovely setting and a great cover, this was an enjoyable read. The characters were all pretty likeable and I am excited to see what happens in the next instalment of the Isles of Scilly series.

With thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second book in the Isles of Scilly series and again I absolutely adored it. The previous book introduces the reader to the Treneary family who lives on the Isles of Scilly. The first book was about Kiera and Noah, it also introduced the rest of the family. This latest book focuses on best friends Kit and Seren.

They have been friends for years, but recently there has been a change. Both like each other, but there is something more that threatens to rock the boat. Having a friendship is a great thing, you have support and company as well as someone to have a laugh with. Seren is a friend of the family, she spent most of her childhood growing up and around the Treneary house, so Kit is almost like her little brother, and she often reminds him of this. Kit runs a business and he is always popping in to see Seren at the local pub where she works. He is in love with her but doesn't think she feels the same.

Once again the author has woven such a lovely story that was tantalising with the constant will they/won't they hanging over. At times this gave quite a fraught feeling and I wanted them to get together, but things never go according to plan. Especially when exes turn up, or you are seen laughing with someone else, or you start to avoid the other person. THis leads to heartache and also makes for a wonderful story.

This is a wonderful family, there are several family members and each is mentioned, some more than others and I am hoping that the author has plans to give them each a story over the series.

The setting is fabulous as there are no secrets but plenty of gossip in this island community. If you like the village romance-style stories then this has a very similar vibe.

A gorgeous story that I was only planning on reading a few chapters of, but, which, once again I read in one sitting. Thank goodness I didn't have work the next morning!

A gorgeous story of family, friendship and change. It has a tense feel to it as the author puts her characters through the mill, but this makes it great for the reader. Ideal for fans of contemporary fiction and romance. One I would defiantly recommend.

What a beautiful read this proved to be,
One where everyone else their love can see
But this couple are friends and worried too
About changing their status and what it could do!

She's six years older and best friends with his brother
It seems strange and wrong to think of him as a lover.
But attraction grows and seems mutual, too,
So what should this couple decide to do?

A family drama and heartwarming read
Great to escape into and just what I did need.
With great characters, a train, an intervention and more,
What a fantastic setting, too, that I'd now like to explore.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this lovely book
And highly recommend you also give it a good look.
For my complementary copy, I say thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review

A Change of Heart is a light friends-to-lovers romance with a hefty helping of mutual pining. It's full of a gentle charm and the power of friendship. I also liked the reflection on the past and finding out people are not as black and white as our memories might suggest.

Even in the depths of their self-denial, I liked Seren and Kit. Seren is scarred by her past poor choices in men and is worried that her inevitable breakup with Kit will ruin her relationship with his family. Good-hearted Kit simply can't believe that Seren would like him back and gallantly keeps a lid on his own feelings. You want to knock their heads together and lock them in a closet somewhere (and it seems many of their friends and family feel the same) but they're such good people you don't want them hurt either. When they finally admit their feelings, it's a relief and a joy.

The supporting cast are about 80% matchmakers and 60% related to Kit. I hope all his brothers get their own happy endings, as their stories (bar Noah) are left in difficult places. For anyone going through a tough time, the simple joys of love, family, and friendship can be found in the Isles of Scilly.

This was such a delightful, summery read. It’s going to be perfect for a holiday novel, or even a nice glass of wine in the garden and a little escapism!

It’s book 2 in a series but is perfect as a standalone also, I haven’t read book 1 but am going to go back and delve in as I enjoyed this one so much.

It’s a beautiful friends to lovers story, with a small age gap. Set on the Isles of Scilly which sound beautiful and I now want to visit. Love when a book gives me something for my bucket list!

Kit is part of a large family and is secretly in love with Seren, a close family friend since childhood. Seren has found her thoughts towards Kit changing recently but is scared to act on them and risk ruining their friendship. They’re both lovely characters, very realistic and down to earth. I also adored Mirren, the matriarch of the family, she’s a wonderful lady and the glue between all her sons.

I was rooting for Kit and Seren, I had a crush on him myself I have to admit! I’d definitely purchase tickets for his island tour! The only character I wasn’t keen on was Holly, I think I was experiencing jealousy on behalf of someone else though…

I debated between giving this book three or four stars because I liked this couple, Kit and Seren, a lot more than the couple in the first book. The writing style was just as good and easy to read through, very enjoyable and quick to read plus we got to see even more of the island they live on which was really fun to read about.
Kit is definitely a very likeable love interest and we see a little more depth with him than we did with the characters in the first book I think…buuut the couple doesnt get together until quite late in the book and I love a slow burn but this wasn’t quite a slow burn…it was more a “will they won’t they?” Initially as I saw the progress bar at the bottom of my kindle get higher and higher I was wondering “what the heck is this author doing??” But honestly I was pleasantly surprised by the end, I think it worked out well for this story!

These books are all a continuation of one another with a shifted perspective in each so it’s hard to differentiate my feelings on the book vs the series because the series reads like one big book if that makes sense. But regardless, I really enjoy this authors writing style.

A Change of Heart by Hannah Ellis

I received an advance review copy for free thanks to Rachel's Random Resources and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

She was never meant to fall for her best friend’s brother...

Seren has had a soft spot for her best friend’s brother for as long as she can remember. But when she starts to see Kit as more than just a friend, she knows she’s on dangerous ground.

Avoiding him is probably her best course of action, but that’s easier said than done when you live on a tiny island.

When Kit declares he’s in love with her, she’s forced to deny her feelings. There’s too much to lose for her to do anything else.

This is the second book in the series and I have read the first book, but I feel that it would be possible to enjoy this book if read as a standalone. This is such a lovely story that it was nice to be able to escape to the Isles of Scilly for a few hours. I planned on only reading a few chapters of this and before I knew it I had reached the acknowledgments. A highly recommended summer read.

A super cute follow up in the Isles of Scilly series from Hannah Ellis. I’m hoping Ellis writes more stories like this set in various locations around the world that are less included in travel romances! (Nothing again Scotland, France and Italy but I love a bit of variation)

Seren and Kit have known each other since childhood, and when Seren realises she’s falling for her best friend’s ‘baby’ brother (he’s 22 and she’s 28) she tries her best to shut down any romantic feelings for him. When they both end up travelling to London to support Trystan after his break up with long term girlfriend Jenny, they find themselves having to share a bed and spend a lot of time together…

I loved this story and I’ve always enjoyed the character of Kit, the entrepreneurial youngest Treneary brother with his island train!

A Good Series

Book 2 in the series and this time we concentrate on Seren and Kit. Set on the beautiful Isles of Scilly, Seren has always been treated as part of the Treneary family and considered all the boys to be like brothers but gradually she realised her feelings for Kit had changed but should she tell him? Another lovely romance which I enjoyed very much and am looking forward to reading the next in the series.

The first book in this series was very good and this one is even better!

I am so pleased Hannah Ellis is a prolific writer because there are some stories I don't want to end. As she writes a number of books as a series (although they read well as stand-alone books, too) it takes quite a while for what is basically a most satisfactory saga to wrap up. I highly recommend you dip into the first book of the Isles of Scilly series; you will also find it very hard to stop there.

A Change of Heart (Isles of Scilly Book 2)

A lovely book, a feel good story even with the moments of Seren doubting herself. I can thoroughly recommend reading any book written by Hannah Ellis because she can’t write them quick enough for me. Thank you Hannah Ellis for being such a good Author x

Didn’t enjoy this as much as the first book in this series. I wanted to read more about Lily, the main character in that book, but this story featured other characters in the same setting. This also wasn’t a mystery but more of a romance, which I wasn’t expecting. The ending was predictable and it took too long to get there. Not planning on reading the next book in this series.

Never disappointed with a novel from Hannah Ellis! Love the characters and how the stories intertwine although each book is a story in its own right. Can’t wait for the next instalment in this series! ❤️

Lovely 2nd book in the series. Light, amusing - sometimes a bit predictable - but the island sounds beautiful and it’s a thoroughly enjoyable read. Looking forward to reading the next one!

Sometimes, what we need has always been in front of us…
Seren always felt part of the Trenearys’ family, even if they aren’t sharing any actual DNA. Growing up and being best friends with Noah, made her feel she always had to place where she would be welcomed with open arms.
But when she starts seeing Noah’s younger brother in a total different light, she knows she is in trouble…
How can she come clean about her blooming feelings when there is so much at stake? And she cannot imagine losing the people who are like a second family to her.
So when Kit speaks out his own feelings for Seren, she has no other option than denying her own.
But the heart wants what it wants, and hiding her feelings because more difficult every day…
Having read the first book, and loving it, I obviously had no other choice than reading this next book too.
I didn’t dislike Seren in book 1, but I saw her more as a threat to the wonderful couple that Keira and Noah make.
But in that book, Seren made me like her more and more, so I was very curious how and when she would have her own happy end.
It’s obvious that Seren is a kind person, very loving and caring. Even if she has known loss at a young age, with the love she receives and gives to the Trenearys’ family, she feels she found the next best thing.
She is also a very understanding person, as she knows that now that her best friend is in a relationship, she is no longer his first priority. However, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t sting when she needs her best friend by her side.
Kit may be younger than Seren, but the author manages perfectly to proof that age truly is just a number. Because Kit is more mature than other people of his own age, and even more mature than people who are actually older.
Maybe he is not the smartest guy around concerning professing his love, but his feelings are genuine and real.
He would do anything for Seren, even if that mean he should learn to use an actual bookmark!
And let’s be honest, he’s also a smart guy, as his successful business shows. He’s got the looks AND the brains! What else does a woman need!
From the very start of this book, I had the best fun! It starts when Seren is ogling Kit without realizing it’s Kit who caught her attention. But I also swooned at the sweet moments, like Kit looking after Seren after a peanut incident.
However, as a reader I also got a bit frustrated. Not because the author didn’t do a great job with this book, but it was so irritating that it… just… takes… such… a… long… time for Seren to finally listen to her heart!
What does it matter if Kit is younger? So what if Seren has known him all her life? If he is the man for you, that all doesn’t matter! And don’t let fear of ruining everything make you ruin everything!
Although… even if I got angry at Seren at some moments, I could also somehow comprehend her feeling. Not that I agreed with them, but I saw where she was coming from. Because what if in some weird ways, things would end badly between them, Seren would not only Kit as a boyfriend, but also as a friend, and also whole his family.
And that is not a risk she wants to take…
The beauty about this book is that all the fears are understandable, even if you don’t agree. And also how difficult it can be that once something it outspoken, to return to things were before. But also that friendship, when love doesn’t seem to be reciprocal, is very important. Better to have someone in your life as a friend, than not having that person in your life at all.
What stood by me the most after long reading sessions, is that the heart cannot be dictated. No matter how hard we fight against our feelings, and try to even move on, your heart and love will always direct you back to the person you care the most about.
And overthinking about things that could go wrong, is not the best of ideas. Focus instead on the wonderful future and life together and make things work.
