The definition of an addictive popcorn thriller, Rhiannon Barnsley’s debut novel, The Clique had my attention straight off the block. With an ever ratcheting pace, a dynamite narrator, and plenty of stunning twists and turns, the plot took me on quite the rollercoaster ride of suspense. But it was the deftly obscured clues piled on top the long list of potential suspects that had me flying through the pages. Needless to say, it was an utter home run all things considered.
The characters ran the gamut from utterly detestable to a few I found myself rooting for no ifs, ands, or buts. That’s not to say that I didn’t look upon them all with suspicion. Up to and including Cass herself. Despite her strong, precocious nature, there were a few moments where her actions had me giving her the side-eye for sure. More than anything, though, I was in awe of the long list of mysterious individuals who enticed me into falling headlong into this plot from beginning to end.
There were only a few teeny, tiny flies in the ointment. Requiring me to suspend all disbelief, there were plenty of over-the-top scenes—especially that blisteringly fast-paced climax. On top of that, the end felt rushed and rather abrupt. Perhaps that was down to me wanting a bigger glimpse into the thrills and chills as the sinister vibe took hold, but I still wanted…well…more. Including, of course, a resolution to the one unfinished plot line that will likely bug me long after closing the cover.
All said and done, however, this quick, easy read was stuffed to the brim with rising foreboding and unending suspense. It also dealt with the often all too true reality that women face at the apex of the corporate world. From misogyny to sexual assault, there were a few serious topics touched on within these pages, so be sure to check out my trigger warning before diving in. Ultimately, though, the intriguing characters and compelling plot pulled me in deep. After all, it was, without a doubt, one rollicking good time. Rating of 4.5 stars.
