A chance encounter with a handsome stranger that no one else remembers.
Aurelia’s life has always been dictated by court politics and the watchful eye of nobility. But the glamour of court life is an ever-tightening noose, one that will never allow her to marry the man she loves or question the decisions that are made for her future.
A predictable, monotonous future.
The only escape from the gilded cage surrounding her is in the books she pilfers from the library. Descriptions of places beyond the pristine palace walls. Stories of the monsters that prowled the Shades long ago. Tales of dark beings who possessed darker power and threatened to wipe out humanity. Creatures that have been dead for centuries, along with the magic that once ruled their world—if it ever existed at all.
But when Aurelia’s father is murdered, the clues left behind will lead her into a world much older and much more dangerous than she ever could have imagined.
*** received as an arc in exchange for an honest review
from found family, to touch her and die to sloooooow burn, this book had my name all over it.
if there’s anything i fall for every TIME: it’s an underestimated FMC who is trying to find her purpose and a shadow daddy MMC 🤤
that’s right, there’s a new shadow daddy on the block and he fits right in. i will say, this author is one of the few authors that write shadow wielding SO well that it’s so easy to picture.
i devoured this and i cannooooot wait for book two.
UPDATE Jan 2025: Currently Re-Reading prior to reading The Blood Queen.
Original Review (Jan 2024): I am truly grateful to have read this as an arc. This is Kate’s debut novel and it is fantastic. The world building is epic and spooky! It’s got: demons, wraiths, humans, + vampires. Just like any fantasy novel we have that first intense world building and introduction to main and secondary characters.
The Blood Kingdom has a strong and unique FMC (Aurelia) that we all love in our fantasy novels, and a morally grey MMC (Ven) that lurks in the shadows (we all love a shadow daddy)! It’s a slow burn, and definitely more plot based than romantic based so far.
I really liked Aurelia’s character and her will power to seek for truth + answers. She is someone that knows what she has to do, but is also still learning her own abilities and strengths.
I am excited to see where this series goes and the development of the story and the characters! I feel this could be the next best thing in the fantasy world.
Read if you like: court politics, strong FMC, morally gray MMC, slow burn + epic world building.
⭐⭐⭐ / 5⭐ 🌶️ / 5🌶️ (I wouldn't consider it explicit, though)
LISTEN I wanted to love this, I really did. It has all the stuff I like in a Romantasy but it just didn't grab me or feel unique enough and I'm sad about it. I'm a big fan of vampires too, but I still couldn't get into this book.
What I liked: This author can clearly write well, and some of the prose in this book was really rich and enjoyable. There was a style to the writing that I don't PERSONALLY love, where the author would often write sentence fragments in full sentence form for emphasis (not grammatically correct, but a stylistic choice) and I respect when authors have unique writing styles. Aurelia was also OKAY as a FMC, although I never felt super engaged by her character and her development/background was quite predictable. I really enjoyed the side characters, particularly Karro and Nira + Embra as a couple.
What wasn't for me: The characters and their relationships, the unrest between the humans and the "magickal" folk, the demon creatures, the powers and how people developed them - all was a bit too predictable and similar to other Romantasy books I've read. And I SWEAR I am open to books with similar elements if something new and intriguing is added in some way, or the characters go through things slightly differently, or there is a unique-feeling spin to some of the details, but I didn't feel like this happened. I saw everything coming from a mile away, and some of the tropes almost felt like the author was going through the motions. My biggest letdown, though, was Ven. I never got attached to him and he never did anything that really moved me or set him apart as a MMC. He didn't grow, we didn't get a ton of depth into his character or emotions beyond "I'm so stoic and perfect" type stuff, and the couple of chapters in his POV left a lot to be desired. I love me a shadowy male love interest, but Ven really did not work for me, and because of that, the romance fell flat.
I do think if you haven't read multiple similar books with similar elements told in a similar storyline to this one before, this book is a pretty solid one to read. There was nothing outright bad about it, and I think the author is talented - but I read and finished the book not feeling much at all, and it didn't feel like something that will stand out in my mind from other books in this genre going forward. 😔
Ok wow. This book had it all! From Vampires to courtly intrigue all the way to questionable religious systems. Oh and let's not forget the ignorant sexist human world (because how else would it be) to a realm filled with creatures from the stories long forgotten and magic and most importantly equality, the dark haired shadow daddy Ven might be a perk too.
There is so much I have loved about this book. The writing was at a perfect pace, alternating from quick to slow at the right moments. The descriptions were so vivid that I now have Ravenstone mapped out in my head (would definitely live there).
What also happened is so many questions that have formed in my head that I now can't wait for book two!!!! Like what's going to happen to Aurelia? Where will she go? What do her powers mean? Also how old is Cog (coolest raven ever by the way, very self centred and loves compliments more than head-scratches)? Also what happened to her parents????
Lets get to the tropes I found in this book: - she hates him at first - one bed (you'll know when you get there) - Bound (its like fated mates, very cute and swoon) - complex magic system - "save the world vibes" - no coddling, blunt is how I like it - discovery of one's true identity - badass fmc (I hope my review isn't hidden because I used a bad word, but that's the best way to describe Aurelia) - shadow daddy - stories of old meet reality - vampires (not twilight vibes though, thankfully)
Oh I bet there's many more but these seemed the most important to me in the moment. Why don't you just read the book and maybe we can all add to the list? It's worth the read for so many more reasons and this debut novel is definitely one of the best ARCs I have received so far and I can't wait for book 2 in this series! Also I wouldn't eb too surprised if this book would be hounded down by a publisher and they'd give Kate an amazing book deal, maybe even a movie adaptation, who knows?
This book is great for fans of ACOTAR, the Serpent and the Wings of Night, Realm Breaker and Sorcery of Thorns! Happy Reading!!
If you’ve been here awhile then you already know I LOVE vampire books. They’re what got me into reading in the 2000s and the fact that they are making a comeback now makes me so happy.
Short Synopsis: Aurelia lives in a gilded cage. She’s the only daughter of her noble family. She has known her whole life that she will be forced to marry the man who can offer her family the most advantageous ally. But when she meets a handsome stranger, that nobody else remembers, her life begins to change.
My Thoughts: What a fun debut! I loved this world of nobility versus magic. The side characters provide an excellent found family storyline. And I love the growth of Aurelia. And let’s not forget the slow burn romance. It’s beautiful and I can’t wait for book two!

Aurelia spends her days in large uncomfortable gowns, waltzing thru guest filled ballrooms, and playing the role of a perfectly poised and polite lady of the court. However with every smile and forced laugh Aurelia feels that she was meant for more than just a status symbol to parade on someone’s arm. With stolen moments in her homes forbidden library she finds some solace to her forced mundane routine. To top it all off she can’t seem to understand how everyone around her is so willing to accept the fact that her father was murdered right under this very roof. With the culprit still at large Aurelia begins a search for answers that leads her into a strange world filled with dark mysteries and creatures long thought a myth. The closer she gets to the truth tho the deeper she finds herself thrust into this shadowy realm and its inhabitants.
This debut magical fantasy read was a vampire filled treat that I desperately was in need of in my life. We follow the story told thru dual POV with our 25 yr old FMC Aurelia and our mysterious shadow wielding MMC Ven. These two characters absolutely bring all the slow burn simmering energy and dagger wielding angst that I adore and couldn’t get enough of them. The world building was intriguing and addictive as you begin to unravel all the hidden corners that are filled with vampires and demons. The book as a whole really gave off vibes of a Bridgeton social scene and society mixed with dark forests and a vampy style ACOMAF. Simply put I ate it up, easily flying thru this read and immediately starting book 2 after finishing. If you are a fan of enemies to lovers, mysteries, shadow daddies, vampires, magical powers being unlocked, SLOWWWW BURN, morally grey characters, sentient magical homes, sprinklings of court politics, and found family then you should definitely try this one out.
If you’re looking for a plot-forward fantasy book with vampires, look no further. Kate’s writing is truly impeccable, immersive, and creative. The magic system isn’t complicated to follow. It is written in the third person if that is a deal breaker for you.
It is a MAJOR slow burn, there’s found family, and again, plot-focused.
I truly was intrigued the second I opened the book. Fantasy lovers will eat this one up.
Short synopsis: Aurelia finds herself bored with the life she’s been forced to live, attending court, being told who to marry, and stealing books from the library behind “The Brothers” back. When her dad is murdered, and demons enter the kingdom she finds her way to another land.
My thoughts: What a great fantasy debut! It has a subtle romantic aspect, the world building isn’t too heavy, there’s vampires and demons, and magick and shadow wielding!
I loved the growth Aurelia has through the course of the book, she becomes soo strong physically, mentally, and learns to trust herself.
I can’t wait for book 2! Thank you Kate Cunningham and @bookedwiththeemilys for a copy of this book!
Read if you love: - Vampires - Found family - Shadow daddies and magick - War and standing up for what’s right - Journey of growth - Romance subplot
I was captivated by Kate Cunningham’s writing right from the beginning. Her descriptions are so beautiful and the world she created is interesting, haunting, and has major gothic vibes. Some phrasing and information was repetitive, but that didn’t take away from me really enjoying the story.
Aurelia is a clever and bad a** FMC who lives in a land run by men who believe a woman’s only purpose in life is to marry and have children. She somewhat accepts this planned future until her world is turned upside down by the death of her father. Her journey and growth in this story was relatable and inspirational.
Ven is a shadow and fire wielding MMC who is not only dangerous and deadly, he’s honorable and totally swoon worthy. I loved the growing tension between the two MCs. The slow burn was real guys! Ven helps Aurelia with finding out the mystery surrounding her father’s death and the answers they find are surprising and had me messaging the author about the release of her next book 😂.
The side characters are awesome too and they totally made me wish I was part of their found family 🥹.
I recommend this book if you like:
✨Vampires and other supernatural beings ✨World building, magic, and politics ✨Plot twists ✨Knife to throat tension ✨Training and fighting ✨Found family trope ✨Slow burn romance ✨Heartfelt moments with family
I was given this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to Kate for sending me a copy of her debut!
THE BLOOD KINGDOM is an adventurous, mysterious start to an indie fantasy series that I absolutely adored! The characters at 10000% lovable ones you want to protect, the setting gives off immaculate castle and forest vibes, and the slow burn romance is just everything. While this is a vampire series, it’s a beginner, easy-to-understand fantasy that’s good for any reader. I really can’t wait for book two of this series to see where everything heads - there’s so much potential for the development of the magic system, the war, and the romance!
The Blood Kingdom took my breath away. TBK is my dream book. It has vampires, enemies-to-lovers, morally grey characters, training scenes, knife-to-throat, and dark fantasy in an immersive world. It’s fast-paced and twisty, with an MC I adored. Aurelia was a relatable MC who I fell in love with. The banter and romance are to die for. 10/10 recommend!
Aurelia’s story captivated my attention from the very first page! I loved the description of the world, the character and relational development, and the change in the trajectory of the FMCs life as she learns a dark secret about herself; but one that she truly starts to embrace by the end of the book. This book is a true slow burn and I can’t wait to see more of the MMC in the next book! It contains all of the tropes that I love most. The ending was so good, it gave me chills! I am so excited for the next book and cannot wait to see where this story goes!
Thank you Booked with the Emilys and Kate Cunningham for the gifted copy!
That was fun! I liked Aurelia and Ven a lot, Karro and the other side characters (hi Seth 😍😍) were fantastic. There was a lot to love about this book. It was an exciting adventure, a little reminiscent of other fantasy books that I adore and loved to see Cunningham’s take on them, and it was just a fun story overall! I’m looking forward to book 2 and seeing what’s next for Aurelia and the rest of the crew!
✨Untamed enough to bend the rules but not strong enough to break them✨
A quote which perfectly reflects the FMCs journey of self-discovery and growth. While the beginning felt like a typical YA debut, the writing strengthened as the story progressed. Familiar tropes were present but not overly relied upon.
Vampires, demons, portal magic, political intrigue, and religion intricately intertwine in KC's stunning debut, 'The Blood Kingdom.' It's a tale of found family, destiny, love, and self-belief. I found that the themes exploring demonic death and the wielding of magic add depth to the narrative in a unique manner not seen often.
KC adeptly concludes book one without a frustrating cliffhanger, yet leaves readers eager with a teasing glimpse into the future— my favorite approach in series progression. The story feels refreshingly original, avoiding clichéd plots or scenes reminiscent of other media, though fans of 'Serpent and the Wings of Night,' 'The Mortal Instruments,' or even A Kingdom of Stars and Shadows will likely find it enjoyable.
I'm eagerly anticipating book two (please let there be a sequel); there's much more to uncover about Ven, and I can't wait to see it all unfold!
Blood Kingdom — a beautiful ARC I received by Kate Cunningham.
I truly have to say enjoyed this one from start to finish. It had everything a reader like me LOVES. The world building of Crecent Valley was one of my favorites. I am a sucker for a carefully thought out location/world.
Following the main FMC, Aurelia and her journey to find the truth about her father was certainly my favorite. I felt like she was also discovering a lot about herself thought everything she faced. Kate really hit character building out of the park, I loved Aurelia and her true identity so much more towards the end of the book!!!
Let’s talk vampires —- WOW. I had a feeling i was going to be satisfied because who doesn’t love a good vampire story!! Vampires have always been an obsession of mine, at least in books & film. Ven was just sooooo dreamy, he had me SWOONING since I was introduced to him! Both of their lives changed once they met! You had me at HOT SHADOW DADDY! & MORALLY GREY!!!😍
I loved the nobility & magic elements she included, it was definitely something that STUCK out to me. I loved the side characters I think they were also great elements of Aurelia’s story.
If I haven’t convinced you to read - The Blood Kingdom — It’s got everything you need from
* Enemies to lovers * Morally Grey MMC * Vampires * Badass FMC * Magic * Found Family * Slow Burn * FMC Growth Arc
All in all this truly deserves ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ because it just had all the contributing elements that I really love in a story. Kate, Congratulations my girl! you DID THAT! I cannot wait for the sequel babes!!!!
EVERYONE PLEASE add this book to your TBR! You won’t regret it!!!!
This was such a magical and addictive reading experience, and it felt like a cross between a vampire love story mixed with some shadowhunter/ Mortal Instrument vibes! I'll say the first half of the book was a little slower going in pace, but once our FMC left her home and discovered The Blood Kingdom, things really picked up and I WAS HOOKED!
This part of the story really sucked me in and I found myself loving all the side characters that we met along the way that became Aurelia's found family. I loved learning more about the kingdom, the magic system, and Kate's writing is so descriptive and just magical to read!
I thought I liked Bastien as the main love interest for Aurelia, but then Ven entered the chat and I was like 'OH...nevermind, this is better!', especially their banter and the way Ven challenged Aurelia at every turn. I loved the growth, the moments of discovery and seeing Aurelia really come into her own throughout the story. I will admit I was sad when I finished the book, not only because we get a cliffhanger, but the next book isn't out yet. But like, I'm hooked and will be so excited to jump back into the story when it comes out! I knew it wasn't a mistake to jump into another gripping vampire fantasy romance and this really delivered!
Ok if you know me, you know 2 things: I fucking love vampires and I have not had a good run with popular bookstagram romantasy books. BUT, this book!! The writing is so good, the exposition and the imagery is done very well. World-building is pretty solid, sometimes confusing. But it doesn’t feel too on the nose, but rather like you’re learning bits and pieces with the characters, which keeps the mystery alive. Foreshadowing isn’t “omg get that orange away from me” which was, refreshing.
Aurelia, the FMC is truly so badass. She is ruthless, loyal, and passionate but also flawed and insecure. I love her and wanna punch her. And Ven, our typical “arrogant broody, morally gray MMC” is a soft boy.
I was skeptical going in, but I gotta say I’m a fan. The Blood Kingdom is so much more than just another vampire romance fantasy story. It’s more about magic and power, forgotten truths and dangerous secrets. It’s a plot-heavy slow-burn, with definite yearning. It's got vampires, shadow and fire wielders, demons, fairies, magic etc.
Idk how many books this will be but this was a great first installment. I’m hoping the second book will answer a whole lotta questions. Can’t wait.
Thank you @katecunnigham and @bookedwiththeemilys for gifting me a copy of this e-book.
If you're a fan of fantasy, you can't afford to miss this book! The Blood Kingdom is an exciting debut novel that has everything you could want - intrigue, vampires, politics, betrayal, secrets, and a strong female protagonist who will capture your heart.
The story hooks you from the very first page, and you won't be able to put the book down. The author's writing is vivid and engaging, bringing the world and its characters to life in a way that will leave you spellbound. The pacing is perfect, and the romance, which is subtly woven into the plot, adds to the book's appeal.
When I finished reading, I was left wanting more, and I was thrilled to learn that the second book is already in the works. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good fantasy novel. This has become one of my all-time favorites.
Honestly, this was not perfect….(could say a lot more here but I’m not).
BUT this series has sooo much potential! I’m here for it and I’m staying for it! I can’t wait for the next book!
I absolutely LOVE Ven. He is a really amazing and multilayered character. We only really saw the surface level but you did see hints of all of him slip through.
There is still so much to learn about the world and obviously so much they’ll have to fight for. I look forward to seeing how it plays out.
I’m honestly stunned this book hasn’t blown up yet.
The writing is vivid and immersive, with rich imagery that pulls you right into the world. Every scene feels alive, and the storytelling is strong from start to finish.
At the heart of it is a compelling FMC who’s pushing back against societal expectations and government control, a theme that’s both timely and powerful.
I’m already itching to dive into book two. We’ve only gotten glimpses of the MMC so far, and I have a feeling the author is saving some big reveals for what’s next.
Read this if you like; •shadow daddies •tattooed men •found family •slow burn romance
I am in my romantasy era and I am so happy about it. I love me a vampire book and this did not disappoint. The story building was easy to follow and made the world come to life before my eyes. The found family and the character growth was so fun read about. I’m already pining for book 2!
I was absolutely blown away by this book and Kate's writing. Aurelia's journey was such a captivating journey to be following and I thouroughly enjoyed seeing her huge character development from the beginning right until the end. The progression of her character was perfectly paced and she has become one of my all time favourite FMCs.
The plot element of this book was executed so well and never felt rushed or dragged out, which instantly gave me that five star feeling. The storyline combined with the writing gave me such an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. The twists and the action had me on the edge of my seat, the found family aspect had me smiling and laughing out loud, and the emotional scenes with Aurelia translated so well and had me feeling the same emotions for her.
After finishing this book I am left wanting more and I cannot wait for the next book in this series as I am already missing these characters too much. I would highly recommend this book and I can see this becoming one of my favourite series I have ever read.
Why is this book not more popular?? I set aside reality, my job, and all my responsibilities to enjoy this book. Aurelia and Ven are easily in my top 5 favorite book couples. Cunningham writes so well and I was able to picture the magic so vividly. Although we have a shadow-daddy trope, I think the immersion in the rest of the world is SO unique that Ven stands out among the other top contenders. This book and the sequel has everything that I have found somewhat lacking in other stories - the creatures, the villains, the development of the side characters, the slowly building tension, showing and not telling - and all of it is excellent.
You should read this if you like: incredible world building, found family, plot twists and turns, political intrigue, touch her and die, magic training
vampires, slow burn, enemies to lovers, magic, found family, ‘touch her and die’, morally grey characters… are you convinced yet?
WELLL if you’re salivating at the mouth like i am then you NEED to read Blood Kingdom! it has all those tropes and more so what are you waiting for? grab that book and dive in!
i enjoyed reading about a new fantasy world full of vampires, magic, and demons; the world building was well detailed. Aurelia’s character growth was fun to follow as she became more confident in herself, who doesn’t love a bad ass FMC?! the slow burn was SLOWWW and i find myself craving MORE. please i need more!! there are still open ended questions and mystery all around certain plot moments but hoping those will be ironed out in the next book(s)!
all in all such a great debut book and i cannot WAITTT for the sequel!! i need to know what happens next 🫣
thank you to Kate Cunningham for the ARC and allowing me into your fantasy world 🫶🏻
WOW! Kate Cunningham’s debut novel “The Blood Kingdom” was amazing. It had me hooked from the very beginning and I ate it right up!
This is a very easy to follow fantasy book. If you’ve wanted to try your hands at fantasy I strongly recommend this. There’s some world building but it’s very easy to understand which I appreciate.
Throughout the course of the book you get to watch as Aurelia (our FMC who gives me major Celaena Sardothien vibes from the ToG series) has major growth. She went from having her entire life mapped out for her to doing the d*** thing. Then we have our morally grey, MMC, our shadow daddy. I can’t wait for more! Impatiently waiting on book 2. There is so much potential and so many ways this series can go and I’m so here for it.
Oh gosh did I mention there’s vampires! EEEK If you know me you know I love me some vampires.

Thank you Kate and The Emily’s for sending me the ebook!!
Unfortunately this is not going to be a favorite read of the year, but I still enjoyed the story! I think this could be the case of a lot of world building/setup and once we get into the later books in the series it’s gonna be a banger!! I’m definitely excited to read the next book when it comes out and see where this story takes us.
This book is very reminiscent of a very loved fantasy series… 👀. Including a girl from another world, a leading dark haired male, a quiet guy and a goofy guy who are leading guy’s best friends and right hand men. And two women, one spunky and outgoing and the other with dark hair and a total badass that everyone is afraid of. Sooooo hard not to totally compare (not saying the actual title but iykyk and you should know). The main difference is this book had vampires! Which I love and adore.

The Blood Kingdom was one of the books on my books recommended by friends to read in 2025. It’s an easy to understand fantasy book that would be accessible for those new to the fantasy genre. The mystery plot was engaging, and I felt the pacing was appropriate for the story. I enjoyed the clues that were sprinkled throughout the story that lead to the reveal of the big bad. While I guessed part of the revelation, I was surprised by the rest of it which is always a pleasant surprise. I really loved the characters. Aurelia was willing to do what was needed for her family but wanted more out of life. When given the opportunity for something new, she full on committed. I also liked the dynamic between Aurelia and Ven. This story also had delightful found family and slow burn tension that will have you swooning. Overall, it was an enjoyable read.
