Will Faith Perish in the Big Top’s Flames? Introducing a new series of 6 exciting novels featuring historic disasters that transformed landscapes and multiple lives. Whether by nature or by man, these disasters changed history and were a day to be remembered. Evelyn Benson’s husband perished in the Bataan Death March but not her faith. The World War II Gold Star widow is taken in by her brother and soothed by the love of his wife and children. Evelyn refuses to cower to grief. She may not understand God’s mysterious ways, but she has never questioned Him—until the circus fire. The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus train chugs into Hartford, Connecticut, on a sweltering day one month after the Allies invaded Normandy. Among the roustabouts is a reluctant clown, Hank Webb. He may hide from his murky past behind grease paint as Fraidy Freddie, but God wants to offer Hank a chance to be found. Though first, what little Hank believes about God will endure a fiery trial. On Thursday, July 6, 1944, a devasting blaze of unknown origins consumes the circus tent along with Evelyn’s hopes and Hank’s anonymity.
This was such a powerful and heart breaking book! After learning about that disaster, I want to read more about some more actual photos of how it was constructed, the inside photos of that circus etc. I can only imagine the terrifying time those poor souls had in trying to escape the inferno....Seems as if still not proven regarding an arsonist but sounded likely unfortunately. So many more innocent people traumatized :( This was a debut book for this author but I wouldn't have known or no complaints from me; excellent job. There were so many spiritual references with Bible verses such as "great love has no man than he lay down his life for another". Many soldiers have been called this and rightfully so as deserve that honor indeed as were some brave souls that day who gave their lives trying to help rescue those attempting to flee the circus blaze.
The questions and doubts pondered by them are reflective of many of us still today as to why such tragedies occur and why God doesn't prevent them etc....As humans, we can't understand so much in this life but can the next, as to why that's for sure, only that God is sovereign, he still loves us unconditionally, he is faithful, comforts us as no else can, is with us during sorrows as well as the joys....as difficult++ as it is, we need to trust him regardless. Such life lessons to ponder for sure.
I was so impressed with this author as she will certainly be one to support and buy any future books by her. Definitely recommend :)
On July 6, 1944, the Ringling Brothers Barnum-and-Bailey Circus bigtop caught fire with hundreds of patrons inside. Though many worked courageously to get people out, many men, women, and children perished inside. Evelyn Benson's brother and sister-in-law were among those who died, but what happened to eight-year-old Lily and two-year-old Jaimie? Roustabout and clown Hank Webb remembers getting both children out, but in the chaos, they disappeared. As Hank and Evelyn search for her niece and nephew, their feelings for one another grow, but both struggle with the question: How does a good God let such terrible things happen?
Dragomir does an excellent job exploring that question. At times, the pain was so great, I had to set the book aside for a while. Neither Evelyn nor Hank are strangers to agony. Evelyn's husband died during the Bataan death march. Hank is on the run for murder. He also bears the weight of his younger brother's death after not paying attention to his father's warning about thin ice.
I expect that this will be one of my top five fiction reads of 2025. The story was compelling, overpowering, and hopeful. Dragomir had me in tears for much of the last two chapters. I look forward to reading more of her works.
Who knew there was a tragic circus fire that occurred during WWII? This series brings to light little known US tragedies. When the Flames Ravaged is the author's debut.
On July 6, 1944, a devastating fire consumed a Barnum & Bailey circus tent in Hartford, CT. In Rhonda Dragomir's retelling of this event, the tragedy brings together two strangers together in a desperate search for a missing boy that just might bring healing to their own tattered hears. This was a beautifully written story that instantly drew me back in time to 1944. Whether we were reading Evelyn's point of view at the diner or Hank's perspective as a circus clown and Barnum & Bailey employee, I felt like I was getting a unique glimpse into the past. The author did a fantastic job with the historic setting. The characters were flesh and blood, hardworking, kind, yet flawed people who were both just trying to do their best in life. The story was tragic but tastefully written. I felt Evelyn's pain as she searched for her family. I can only imagine how confusing it must have been to try and reunite children who'd been separated from their parents. I was dying to find out what happened in the end and rooting for Evelyn and Hank to work out the obstacles between them. If you enjoy historical romance, I highly recommend you read this one. I'm curious about the other books in this series, as well, and plan to check them out.
This story gripped me from the very beginning and I wanted to devour each word. I had never heard of this fire and was enlightened to think of this happening.
The author does such a great job of portraying each of the characters and I was invested in them.
I also enjoyed so much of the spiritual wisdom that is imparted throughout the book. Unfortunately this world is full of hard times but so thankful that God is there with me through each day.
Thanks so much to netgalley and Barbour Publishing for the arc. The opinions are my own.
Rhonda Dragomir's debut novel, When the Flames Ravaged, is a mesmerizing journey through the tender heart of tragedy, faith, and redemption set amidst the backdrop of the unforgettable July 6, 1944, Hartford, Connecticut circus fire. This captivating blend of fact and fiction transports readers to a world where the flames of disaster threaten to consume everything in their path, yet amidst the chaos, the light of hope shines brightly.
At the center of the story are Evelyn Benson and Hank Webb, two individuals whose lives intersect in the most unexpected of ways. As the flames ravage the circus tent, Evelyn, a Gold Star Widow, grapples with unimaginable loss, while Hank, disguised behind his clown persona, becomes a pillar of courage and compassion amidst the turmoil.
Dragomir's vivid prose brings to life the sights, sounds, scents, and emotions of the circus, drawing readers into a world of wonder and danger. Through her meticulous research and attention to detail, she captures the soul of this tragic event with haunting authenticity, leaving a permanent imprint on this reader's soul.
Beyond the spectacle of the circus and the devastation of the fire, When the Flames Ravaged is a beautiful tale of faith tested by fire. Through Evelyn and Hank's journeys, Dragomir explores profound questions of belief and doubt, wrestling with the age-old dilemma of why God allows suffering. Yet amidst the ashes, there is a more than a glimmer of hope—a reminder that even in the darkest of times, God's love endures.
As the flames of tragedy give way to the light of redemption, readers are reminded of the transformative power of faith, forgiveness, and God’s sovereignty. Through heartbreaks and triumphs, Dragomir weaves an beautiful tapestry of grace and redemption that resonates with the timeless truths of the Bible and the Christian’s daily faith.
I am amazed by the quality of Dragomir's writing in this debut novel. Her ability to seamlessly blend historical accuracy with compelling storytelling is truly commendable. I applaud Barbour Fiction for consistently publishing novels that not only entertain but also inspire and impact readers. This series, A Day to Remember, continues to be a tribute to the enduring power of faith and the resilience of the human spirit—a must-read series for anyone seeking captivating narratives of hope (earthly and eternal) amidst adversity.
I was blessed to receive an eARC of When the Flames Ravaged from Barbour Fiction publishers through NetGalley. It's important to note that I neither had an obligation to write a favorable review nor received any compensation for my words. This review genuinely reflect my heartfelt assessment and the sincere thoughts about this remarkable novel.
Could this woman answer Evelyn’s most burning question? “Why does God let these terrible things happen? Either He doesn’t love us very much, or He’s not powerful enough to stop them.”
This book surprised me. Starting the story, I did not expect to really enjoy it, but the author drew me fast with her gripping writing and barely a blink I was 40% into the story.
“Yes. God could upend the laws of nature. Sometimes He does, and those are what we call miracles.” Bernice leaned closer. “But if they happened every day, they wouldn’t be miracles anymore. Sometimes God lets nature take its course.”
The author drew me along with the characters, making me feel their fear, loss, and despair. I also felt that through Lily, we as readers could see the true trauma of the survivors and their struggle to just live each day after the horrible day.
The characters struggle with their faith in grips of the trauma was realistic and the questions raised is something I think we all ask when faced with grave events in our lives.
“It’s okay not to understand. Just like you trust Aunt Evie, we all need to trust God—that He loves us, He is with us, and He will take us someday to live with Him in heaven with your papa and mama.”
This was a great debut which highlighted a horrible day in a realistic, emotional, and faith-filled way.
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*
Devastating and inspirational! My heart was ripped out, and I cried multiple times. I personally related to the characters' questions on faith. I wish I had read this years ago when I was going through something tragic. I'm shocked this is a debut novel. Well done!
I was given a complimentary copy of the ARC by the publisher and NetGAlley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to write a positive review.
Wow, what an emotional roller coaster Rhonda Dragomir takes us on in When the Flames Ravaged!
Flawed characters are forced to work together as tragedy strikes the town. Evelyn has already faced so much grief and hardship in her life. Haunted by his past, Hank is always looking over his shoulder, afraid his past will find him. Can they survive yet another traumatic event?
I both love and am grieved that this novel is based off of true events. Rhonda Dragomir did an incredible job bringing history to life as we read this tale of tragedy! I'm anxious to read more in this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
What a great debut novel for Rhonda Dragomir! A page-turner, I had trouble putting it down. A rich, fictional retelling of an actual event, (The Hartford Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey circus tent fire) the author has done a beautiful job of weaving history with a romance, and avoided becoming maudlin. The fire was a national tragedy at the time. The story illustrates what happens to faith, good or bad, after something like this happens.
Loved reading this and look forward to reading more books from this author! I received a free ARC of this book.
I have heard of this tragedy, but never really anything in detail. This read was very interesting, although very sad. I enjoyed Evelyn and Hank's characters, how strong they were individually, but also together.
Evelyn is a war widow, living with her bother and his family, working as a waitress in a local diner. Hank is a circus clown, in town for the show. After a chance meeting at the diner, Hank and Evelyn start up a friendship. Evelyn gets called into work so she cannot go with her family to watch. With the show happening, little do people know there is a fire brewing on the outside. When the fire is know, Hank and Evelyn's brother, Bill, jump into action to get people to safety.
The aftermath and the trauma people must have gone through is unbearable to think. I enjoyed this book very much, a debut novel, was very well written and kept my interest.
What an awesome yet heart wrenching story. I'd never heard of this horrendous circus fire, but thanks to the author, this event, and it's aftermath, was brought to life. Evelyn Benson is a war widow who lives with her brother and his family while helping to pay the bills by working as a waitress. Hank is living the life as a circus clown in the Ringling Brothers circus to attempt to remain hidden from something in his past. Both of their lives are drastically altered after the fire. During this time, Hank desires a relationship with Evelyn, but with so many secrets in his past, will it ever work out? Both also are on a spiritual journey, struggling with questions of why God would allow such suffering in their lives. I loved their individual growth and how it affected their relationship with each other. And I loved the spiritual truths shared. I loved this passage, "A mental picture floated into Evelyn's mind on wings of a dove, seeing herself seated in God's lap in much the same way. She could almost feel HIs embrace, snug and comforting. She leaned into it with a new understanding. Evenlyn was but a child in the universe God created. She'd never receive the answers to her questions when her capacity to understand was limited by her humanity. Evelyn would have to demonstrate to God the same trust Lily had placed in her-to guide her safely through life's circumstances, no matter how inexplicable or how much they contradicted her belief in a loving, powerful God." What really kept me swiping through the pages of my book was the anticipation of needing to know what the status was of certain family members after the devastating fire. Following their journey to reunite with loved ones. Not knowing if loved ones were alive and missing or deceased. So emotional knowing this was based on a true event. The author truly had me in tears as I read these stories of fictional people, knowing they were based on reality. Though, I will say, some of my tears were happy tears. Such an emotional story. I loved this book, and cant wait to read more by this author. I received an e-copy of this book through NetGalley and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.
When the Flames Ravaged by Rhonda Dragomir us a fantastic addition to Barbour Publishing’s A Day to Remember series. My attention was captured right away by the circus setting of this Christian historical fiction novel. Hank, aka Fraidy Freddy the clown is running away from secrets in his past, when he encounters Evelyn, a war widow working as a waitress to make ends meet. The faith element of this book is superbly incorporated as an authentic part of plot, not a sermonette awkwardly plopped into the story, as can sometimes happen. I’m not typically a fan of a romance subplot--many stories don’t need it, but it’s an appropriate and necessary part of this story. Before reading this book, I had never heard of the real life Ringling Bros fire, and I found it fascinating, and almost miraculous that any circus was able to escape going up in flames, given the lack of safety measures. I’ve now read the first 2 books in this new series, and it has the potential to be one of my favorite Barbour series (and I’ve loved several already!)
Thanks go to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
This book packed a serious emotional punch with its heavy subject matter, yet through the heart wrenching tale of the 1944 Hartford circus fire and its aftermath, the author wove words together like a beautiful and incredibly inspiring tapestry of hope. Hank Webb played the role of a circus clown while he attempted to run from his past. Evelyn Benson endured so much tragedy that it nearly broke her spirit. How this unlikely pair came together and grew in their relationship through numerous difficulties had me reading with rapt attention. They each had their own personal faith struggles that needed resolution and the author crafted a spiritually rich storyline that ran from the depths of despair to uplifting hope. Be prepared for this book to evoke deep emotions, not only from the disaster itself, but by the characters and their personal struggles as they moved forward. I’d definitely be interested in checking out more from this new-to-me author!
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher and NetGalley via Celebrate Lit. A positive review was not required and all opinions stated here are my own.
Two hurt souls, find friendship and faith in the light of tragedy.
Evelyn lost her husband in WWII, moving in with her brother's family, she finds hope being around family until it is dashed again in terrible tragedy. Based on a real life event, this story tells of the heartbreak and pain experienced by the families of the victims of this horrific event. A compelling and heart rending read, it was just so sad all that Evelyn had to endure. But also encouraging and full of faith.
Overall, at times it was a hard read as the subject matter was just so sad, but I liked how the author gave this story a faith filled message in light of suffering. I liked Hank and Evelyn form a friendship, comforting each other, and leaning on faith throughout. A compelling historical read, about a tragic true and event in history.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Very impressive and emotional debut novel. I was emotionally invested from the get go as I met Evelyn and her giving and kind heart towards her family even though she is still navigating the grief of the loss of her husband. Her unwavering faith gets her through the valleys as a devastating circus fire changes her life. Not only hers but everyone who lost someone that day in 1944. I loved the historical account that is woven in with fictional characters that are based on some facts. The authors notes at the end were very enlightening and helpful. I felt like I was walking through this devastating journey with Evelyn and Hank as they grow and find the beauty amidst the ashes. Facing our fears can be difficult but Hank finds what he imagined and was running from was not as he thought. I was gobsmacked with this story as it was so well written and was one that gripped my heart. Grief is a hard road to navigate but with God all things are possible. This book is definitely worth reading, savoring, and placing on your keeper shelf to revisit like an old friend. I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
“When the Flames Ravaged” is an evocative and fascinating story that beautifully blends history, romance, tragedy, suspense, and healing. I didn’t know anything about the fire that hit the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus in the mid 40s. so I was I shaken to learn of this and was quickly immersed in Evelyn and Hank’s journey. I connected with them and empathized with the questions they had. I rooted for them on their spiritual journey.
This tale offers emotive storytelling, a blend of fiction and real events, and wonderful, believable characters, and a satisfying spiritual thread. This story gave me more than I expected.

July 6, 1944… a warm, summer day in Connecticut that started like any other but ended in a tragedy that would change the course of so many lives.
The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus are words synonymous with fun, excitement and wonder. Elephants, trapeze acts, clowns… families laughing and the smell of popcorn and sugary treats. But what happens on this particular July day is nothing short of a horror show that kills at least 167 people and leaves more than 700 injured. A fire blazes through the tent, burning dreams and hopes.
Once again, learning about an event in history I knew nothing of until reading this book, I’m left in awe and amazement for how resilient and strong the human race is and how in the face of tragedy, people and towns rise up to comfort and care for one another.
This is a stunning, debut novel featuring ordinary yet extraordinary people who have been touched by unbelievable loss and question everything they know to be true, including their faith. The two main characters are linked together by loss and form an unlikely bond. This book has some amazing supporting characters, as well and I just loved the small town, found family and second chance vibe this story has going for it! There is hope at the end of the book but be ready with tissues!
Overall, this is a touching story. Knowing it is based on true events is sobering. Examining where God is in the midst of our suffering is just as applicable then as it is today. The deep spiritual lessons throughout this story will surely draw others to a more meaningful relationship with God.
Content: loss of loved ones, heavy suffering and grief, descriptive images about burns and injuries. No language, closed door. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Books Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
This is book two in the series from Barbour entitled A Day to Remember Tragedy strikes on July 6, 1944 jn Hartford, Connecticut. Evelyn Benson was supposed to join her brother and his family at the circus that fateful afternoon. Now she has to search for her missing family members after a fire sweeps through a tent with disastrous results. The story relates how Evelyn, a waitress, and Hank, a circus clown, embark on a quest to find niece Lily and nephew Jamie. Such a heartbreaking story with many obstacles for Evelyn to overcome, including putting her trust in Hank who has his own past to deal with. A remarkably told story of a frightening event and the grim aftermath. It was intense and sympathetic while conveying some mystery and a budding romance. It had a solid faith thread that delved into the spiritual growth of the characters. This is the first book I have read from this author and I will be on the lookout for her next offering. *I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing through Celebrate Lit via Netagalley. When I began reading When the Flames Ravaged by Rhonda Dragomir, I wondered if I would be able to read it in its entirety. Based on the 1944 Hartford Circus Fire, such tragedy unfolds with the number of lives lost. The main character Evelyn, a war widow and waitress, was living with her brother and his family. A day intended to be fun filled by going to the circus, drastically turned tragic. Hank, a circus clown, had secrets of his own for why he was with the circus. Through the days, weeks, and months following the tragedy, would Hank be able to help Evelyn in finding her family? Would their acquaintance turn into something more? Be prepared for a few tears.
Though not labeled as Christian, the theme of faith in God is woven intrinsically throughout.

Rhonda Dragomir’s debut novel, When the Flames Ravaged, is a beautifully written dramatic historical fiction novel about when the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus went up in flames.
Main character, Evelyn, lost her husband in WWII and was living with her brother and his family. When tragedy strikes her family yet again, you see just how strong this woman truly is. Hank was a clown at the circus. He tries to come to terms with the tragedy of the fire as well as his past.
The chaos that ensued when the fire broke out had attendees panicking. Some people were helping patrons, others were trampled, injured and left behind. In this book, both MCs come together looking for Evelyn’s surviving family members, and the other trials and tribulations that come after the wartime tragic fire.
This was a beautiful emotional story. The three F’s: faith, family and friends were present throughout the book. It drove the characters with their search for family, the truth about what happened that day and pushed them to grow and love one another.
If you enjoy historical fiction, with some angst and a wholesome hopeful HEA, you will enjoy this book!
I would never have guessed this was a debut novel! It is a wonderful, emotion packed read. Beautifully crafted, true-to-life characters jump off the pages and into your heart. Thanks to Ms. Dragomir’s vivid, detailed descriptions, I could see and feel the chaos and fear at the Ringling Brothers Circus on that fateful day in Hartford, Connecticut, on July 6, 1884. I enjoyed the sweet love story that unfolds as Evelyn and Hank, with their own personal struggles, search for missing family members and truth concerning the cause of the fire amidst the aftermath of the tragic event. I especially appreciate the strong faith thread and spiritual growth experienced by the characters. This captivating fictional story of hope based on a tragic true historical event touched my heart and stirred my soul, and I highly recommend it. I look forward to reading more books by this author. Note: This is the second book in Barbour’s wonderful A Day to Remember series. Each book in the series is a standalone read. I received a copy of this book from Barbour Publishing with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
When The Flames Ravaged, is one of the most poorly written books I have ever had the displeasure of reading.
If I were to write this review as Rhonda Dragomir would write it, it would go something like this..
“And as she scornfully and quickly turned the page, what she read on the other side caused her brain cells to painfully and heart wrenchingly die. Her grey-blue eyes were glued to the page, as she was compelled, in horror, to keep reading. Like a moth to a flame, she had to read on, though the literary incompetency cut mercilessly, like a jackknife, at her literature loving heart.”
This is a hallmark movie in book form. The similes, choice of descriptive words, plot holes, drama and inaccuracy were appalling. Rarely have I read a book that made me stop, reread a horrifying sentence, laugh out loud, and send it to my book loving friends so they too, could writhe in horror.
When the Flames Ravaged by Rhonda Dragomir Publisher: Barbour Publishing Series: A Day to Remember- July 6, 1944 Rated: 3 Obtain: Borrow Back of the Book: “Will Faith Perish in the Big Top’s Flames? Impressions: I enjoy historical fiction and am looking forward to this series. I had never heard of this event before reading this, but the picture of chaos from the story makes me shudder to imagine this day. I found the characters to be interesting but distracting from the actual event. I felt more drawn to the relationship drama of this couple than the actual fire. I would have preferred more focus on the circus and the fire. The relationship between Evelyn and Hank felt strangely fast-paced.
Quotes: “’ Now, Lord, help us to seek Thy divine wisdom, for we have none in ourselves. Shine Thy light, for we know it will dispel the darkness.’”

When the Flames Ravaged by Rhonda Dragomir is the second of six books in Barbour Publishing’s series, A Day To Remember. Taken from true events, a fire engulfed the big top tent of a circus in July 1944. The horrifying tale was captured in the woven words of the author pulling at the heartstrings of this reader. More than once, I had two stop reading, grasping the true emotions of the moment. Rhonda wrote hope and healing into the story as only God’s grace can bring. Don’t miss this book or the series. They will captivate you!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. The opinions expressed are completely my own.
A fabulous debut novel by Rhonda Dragomir, this sensitive retelling of the Ringling Bros. Circus fire during WW2 is a stunning "historical with a romance," as the author styles it.
It's so much more though - by weaving strong threads of faith throughout, Dragomir shows how mercy and forgiveness can be granted even in the midst of terrible suffering. A compelling read, I could not put it down. Hope to see more from this talented writer in the future. Number three in a series of six similar books by Barbour., on Days to Remember.
I received a free ARC, but that did not influence my opinion on this review and my ratings. My opinion is independent and my own.
One of the things I enjoy most about reading historical fiction is being introduced to periods of history I had no idea existed. When the Flames Ravaged by Rhonda Dragomir put me in the lives and shoes of some of the people who might have witnessed the 1944 circus fire in Hartford, Connecticut.
Dragomir takes the time to introduce readers to her characters before the tragedy, which makes the fire all the more tragic. Through their eyes, we watch the tragedy and the aftermath unfold. Evelyn as hands down my favorite character of this book. So much loss in her life but she presses on for the people she loves. Hank comes alongside her for the outset, supporting her in her loss and grief.
While the fire was well-documented in When the Flames Ravaged, much of the book after that focuses on the romance between Hank and Evelyn. It is a fast one that is formed during a difficult period of time, but that allows Hank to see Evelyn at her lowest.
A strong second book in the series, this book pulled on my heartstrings and put me through a rollercoaster of emotions.
