A read-aloud primer on animal sounds contains simple, bold pictures and a series of questions inviting little ones to wonder if a rabbit can oink, a horse can bark, and a monkey can tweet.
Melanie Walsh (born 18 July 1964) is an English writer and illustrator of children's books. She studied at Harrow School of Art and the Royal College of Art.
Walsh has published 46 works in 98 publications. Her books have been translated into nine different languages.[1]
"Tweeting" meant something far different in 1997 than it does today. Parents expecting a tech-savvy kiddie book about networking critters will be disappointed. Instead, this is a colorful, very simple book about animal sounds.
Walsh’s books are perfect for preschool read alouds. The students enjoy answering the questions with the correct words. This was a fun one today though—the kids were so caught up with the pattern of answering “No” to the questions, that they said “No” for the last one, “Do owls hoot?”
A good storytime book encouraging participation. Describes various animals and asks whether or not they make a certain sound (encouraging young childrens' critical thinking), then introducing the animal that does make the sound in question. Bright, basic colors and simple language encourage discussion between parents and their children.
This was read at story time. I enjoyed the similar book, Do Lions Live on Lily Pads , more though because it was sillier. This book reviews animal sounds like so many other books, but it is a bit more fun because it mismatches the animal and sound.
"Do horses bark?" you ask. Turn the page. "No, dogs do." This book is full of silly questions and opportunities for children to demonstrate what the various animals say. Works great in a story time for pre-school age children.
The first thing that came to my mind about this book was Twitter… but this book is not about Twitter and Monkeys, this book is about animals and the noises they make. It was a cute book for little kids my baby sister sure enjoyed it. I personally didn't like the book.
I love this book for young kids - it asks if an animal makes the wrong noise all through the book...but don't get tricked! Colorful, simple illustrations, lots of animals to identify & mimic.
Another great toddler storytime book, identifying the correct animal sound for each animal and lots of opportunity for children to say "no!!" to the mistaken sounds.
