another cute tale of Little Grey Rabbit and her friends and neighbours 🙂

🐰🐦🐿🐇🦔🐾🦔🐭🐭🐀🕷🕸🐝🪲🐔

as the story starts, Grey Rabbit is sewing a nightcap for Mrs Hedgehog from a found handkerchief.
"it's to keep her warm when she looks at the new moon" 🌚

Fuzzypeg (the young hedgehog) turns up to visit, only briefly preceded by Robin delivering a note to say he's coming 😆🦔🐾

he's found lots of 'presents' and starts to empty his pockets 😉
as it happens the shiny green beetle he's brought with him goes straight away to stand by the dropped needle Grey Rabbit was looking for 😉🪲🪡🧵
"I thought he was a special beetle, cried Fuzzypeg" 😉

I really enjoyed the language and details 🙂

Fuzzypeg reports lace hanging on the gorse on the common 😉 Grey Rabbit says it's to catch sunbeams (by the spiders)! 🕸🕸🕸🕸🌞

Squirrel and Hare turn up for tea, but without a couple of eggs Speckledy Hen gave them... 🤔🥚🥚🐔🐿🐇

noone can make lace, except the spiders and maybe the field mice...

...but the mouse household is very busy cos there's so many children 😆🐭🐭🐭

the spiders take no notice of Grey Rabbit... 🕷🕸🕷

nice detail about the cycle of the moon 😊
🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓🌔🌕

an old woman (Miss Suzanne) is singing a song about 'Queen Anne's Lace' - Hare is passing her cottage and stops to chat and watch and learn.
Rat volunteers to make the bobbins.. (just mentioning them cos it's their first appearance iirc 🐀).
Grey Rabbit makes bee and flower lace ♥ 🌺🐝🌸🐝🌼

"and the piece of lace hung down like gossamer"

Mrs Hedgehog is delighted 😁🦔😍

they also make lace to hang on the door of Miss Suzanne's cottage 🙂

"as fine as a fairie's work" ♥

🌟

accessed as an RNIB talking book, nicely read by Pauline Munro 🙂
tho the voice for Fuzzypeg when he's whiny is abit annoying! 😉

How delightful to discover this gem in the Little Grey Rabbit series on a charity bookstall. Lacemaking is an art practised by a faithful few dedicated enthusiasts these days one of whom I have the pleasure of knowing. The description of lace making in the story is so appealing I am tempted to dip into it myself but fear I would have neither the patience nor the time. Clearly something that will have to wait for retirement.

I loved too discovering the old rhyme and name for the beautiful wild flower meadow sweet referenced throughout the story as "Queen Anne's Lace" I had no idea this plant also had this name. What a fitting name it is.

In the story reference is also made to the old country custom on making a wish on the new moon. We are so detached from the natural world these days scarcely noticing the cycles of the moon as our heads are buried in our iPads and phones or too busy searching out virtual Pokemon! Surely this would be a great custom to revive to help young children celebrate it's monthly rebirth.

The simplest story is sometimes the most difficult to write but the easiest to read. Can't wait to reread it with the little girl.

As an avid reader of kids fiction, this one left me cold. It's slow and drags on, which doesn't work for the target audience, or me.
