Some days life is a little messy. Other days, you get arrested by the small-town cop who loves to lecture you on all the ways you could be doing better. Officer Peters has never been Janie’s biggest fan, but when he picks her up for a warrant she didn’t know she had, he lays into her. And, for the first time in years, she breaks. Slinging tears and snot all over the holding room, expecting him to run with his tail between his legs. He doesn’t. Instead, he sits down and calmly helps her come up with a solution to her problems. A solution that plants her square in the middle of the widowed, single-dad’s life. That’s when she discovers that, while her life’s messy, his is just a mess. Luckily, she knows a thing or two about cleaning up a mess. What she doesn’t know, is how to keep from noticing that for the first time in her life, someone else is looking out for her. Taking care of her. Making her feel safe. Special. Maybe even loved. But giving love and accepting it are two different things. And she’s never been great at the latter.
Cowboy and the Convict is a small-town standalone featuring: 🚔He arrests her 💔Widower 👖He makes dad jeans sexy 🔥Slow burn 🏠She cleans his house 🕸️He cleans her cobwebs
I wish Moss Creek was a real place. The people, businesses, and animals are all so endearing, I truly wish I could know them. Janie and Devon were hilarious. Each one had baggage that they tried to hide that really only complicated everything. And the realness of their issues… it’s amazing how we know people say mean, nasty, or hurtful things that aren’t really about us, but those barbs sink in so deep. Seeing Janie finally drown those voices out was wonderful, though I think she should have groveled to Devin for her words and behavior.
The title is a little misleading because Janie definitely isn’t a Convict, but the story was intense and spicy and so very entertaining that the title didn’t really matter anyways. Lol. :)
TITLE: Cowboy and the Convict AUTHOR: Janice Whiteaker SERIES: Moss Creek PD SERIES ORDER: 2 of 3 RELEASE DATE: 7/26/2024 GENRE: Cowboy Romance RATING: ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 TW: parental loss, loss of spouse -------------------- DISCLAIMER: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Janice Whiteaker is a freakin’ genius! I can always count on her to write amazing stories with amazing characters, who have amazing chemistry! Seriously, Cowboy and the Convict managed to suck me in from the very first page! The first couple of chapters did take me a couple days to get through, because these characters’ emotions were just so raw and I had to take a couple breaks so I wouldn’t end up a sobbing mess! (I also had a busy week at work.) Just because I took a break did not mean I stopped thinking about this story though!
Janie and Devon’s story tugged at my heartstrings! I loved how Janice dug into their stories and brought them together! I loved Janie’s relationship with Devon’s daughters! I loved meeting Sharon and Devon’s parents! I loved Janie’s relationship with Mariah and I can’t wait to find out where Janice takes her story!! I’m also really looking forward to the next story in this series, The Cowboy Complication. The blurb at the end of the book absolutely hooked me in!!
Written in third person from an alternating dual POV, this can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. Devon is a widowed dad with three teenage daughters. He is a local policeman, and he has his hands more than full with his job and taking care of his house, his family, and a growing number of resident animals. Janie is single, working two jobs, and doing her best to make ends and pay off her debts. They are both mature (40’s age range) and they have baggage that influences how they react to each other. I adored Devon. He is a little overwhelmed yet still does his best to take care of Janie: especially when she is not taking care of herself. He is a passionate man, a dirty talker, and a soft heart under everything else. Janie is very independent, sarcastic, and a little grumpy with the way her life has turned out. Though she isn’t really a convict at all. I adored their chemistry, their hesitation to jump into something that could hurt in the end, and the way they both interact with his daughters. This was a fun read that I finished on the airplane, and I definitely recommend it. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.
I absolutely love this book! Janie was so prickly and not all sunshine and sweet, she has kind of bounced around trying out different careers all while taking care of herself for quite some time. She doesn’t have it all together and that just felt relatable! Devon is a fixer and wants to take care of her which she brushes off rather grumpily at first. This grumpy/sunshine trope just works so well with these two characters! They both have baggage but work together if they can get out of their own way. Devon is a widowed dad raising three girls and trying to keep it all together. He doesn’t realize how much he needs Janie until they strike a deal to help her get out of some trouble. The relationship between the girls and Devon and then with Janie is extremely well written, realistic and not overly simple. Janie has walls up and Devon breaks them down with every sweet and loving gesture. This is an absolutely wonderful romance between two mature people who have obstacles to overcome and the story getting them there is wonderful!
Janie has failed at everything she’s tried. Why should being in Moss Creek be any different? Especially since Devon, the local police officer, seems to take pleasure in lecturing her about all the ways she’s failing. Until she realizes there is so much more going on with him.
Janice Whiteaker has another five-star story about the Moss Creek Cowboys. Ms. Whiteaker created characters that touch my heart, make me laugh out loud, and sigh in happiness. Devon isn’t perfect, but he can be my hero any day. He’s protective, vulnerable, and caring. He loves his daughters with all his heart and is willing to sacrifice for them. For all that she’s failed at, Janie is succeeding in life on her terms. No matter what others have said to her in the past. She tries every day to get beyond those negative influences and be the sun in other people’s lives. I think she succeeded. She’s sassy and even a bit sarcastic(a trait I find endearing). I love her ability to speak her mind in no-nonsense language. More people should be like that. Janie and Devon are perfect together and I’m so happy they found each other. I’m looking forward to whatever is in store next for the Cowboys of Moss Creek.
4.8 stars. Devon and Janie are wonderful. This is a standalone in a series. Devon is a widowed father, he lost his high school sweetheart and has 3 teen daughters. Devon is a local police officer. Janie is a sarcastic, quick witted, give no craps, strong woman. Janie has a long line of bad relationships, not with just partners but also relatives. On the outside, Devon is a put together guy that just annoys the crap out of Janie. She struggles in life and Devon tries to help her and she takes his help badly. The thing is Devon is struggling and there's a twist in his past that no one knows about. There's a moment where Devon shows Janie he is a good guy that just genuinely cares for her. The teens are great characters. The dialogue between the two of them is hilarious, strong and fantastic. This was a great book and I truly loved it.
Never underestimate the power of side characters! Sometimes they are meant to become main characters that have a story of their own. Janie and Devon have sat on the sidelines and watched others find their happiness. Finding their HEA is a story that is not to be missed!
Janie stood out when she appeared in Whiteaker’s No Going Back. She is snarky, real, and fiercely independent. Now we know why the snark is so much a part of who she is. Devon’s need to care for Janie completely threw her off. No one had ever done that before.
Devon sets the bar high in the boyfriend department. How can you not fall in love with a man who understands what it means to be a caretaker? Not many men know how to deal with cramps and crave a deep, emotional connection. He even friend zoned himself to give her the space he thought she needed.
Initially, these two had little to bring them together besides a spark of interest, but the slow burn led to a connection that not only brought them together as a couple but also brought them together as a family. As their relationship develops, we see they are kindred spirits through everyday survival and loneliness. The subtle change in their banter from snark to an easy, comfortable flow was perfect. Don’t even think that a dad can’t be a daddy who has game! The intimacy between them was completely on fire.
There is a realistic story here. There is an attraction that grows through an investment of time and learning about each other. His three daughters are adorable and add a lot to the plot. As their daily lives and pasts unfold in the story, a lot of baggage is unpacked. Have the tissues handy.
Janice is willing to be real and emotional in her books. The characters call the shots in her storytelling. Everything happens at the right time and place. I teared up as I read the last couple of pages. I desperately wanted more of this family. I was not prepared for the emotional connection I made to this storyline and these characters. That connection and wanting more are what I look for in a five-star book. Once again, Janice wrote a book that gets you in the heart!
Troupes- Widower, He makes dad jeans sexy, Slow burn, She cleans his house, finding love later in life, forced proximity
Representation-
CW- Loss of a parent
Janie and Devon have made it to the top of my favorite couples list of fictional people that have come from Janice’s brain. I loved these two together but I loved Janie more. She a 30 something single woman just living her life trying to find something she loves to keep her busy and fulfilled and its that most real and seen I’ve ever felt for a character. She’s just trying to survive, pay her bills and just maintain, no big dreams she wants to achieve. And then Devon forces his why into her life and drags her into his and in the process she finds something to hope for.
Sooo needly to say I identified hard with Janie and Devon is now partner goals cause that fictional man is not afraid of menstrual cycles or grumpy females and I will never find a real man like that.
This is an excellent cozy read perfect for the beach, the couch, or any season. But its defiantly one you’ll want to read!
Thank you Janice for the advanced copy all opinions are my own!
I love Devon. He is the perfect girl dad. He is dealing with so much but he stays true to his heart and to himself through everything. I love Janie for her determination and her snark and her in your face attitude. She has had enough in life and she just isn't going to take it any more. This is a great story. I love the girls. I love Devon's mom and his deceased wife's mother. This is a heartwarming and healing story. Sure they are two separate rollercoasters running side by side at cross purposes with their own issues, issues that tear at your heart, but when it becomes apparent that there is something there they pull up the brakes and meet the passion and chemistry and heat head on. They also share laughs and feelings and have great deep talks. Devon and Janie hit me heard in all the feels and I am happy for it. These are my own thoughts and opinions. Thanks to the author for a copy.
Another fantastic addition to Janice Whiteaker’s Cowboys of Moss Creek series.
I am so in love with Devon and Janie.
Definitely standalone readable, so even if you haven't read any of Janice's other books in the series, you can pick it up today and have the perfect weekend read. It does pack the feels, too, so maybe grab some tissues. You'll also need them when you start laughing so hard you snort your drink through your nose (because, yeah, that happened).
What I love about it:
Later in life/mature characters Single Dad of teens The independent feisty series side character gets her story Man in uniform... and dad jeans Real life struggles & insecurities "I just want what's best for you" Epic Easter egg! Perfect blend of humor, heat, heart, and angst Banter, so much great banter!
We already know Janie has had issues with men and seems to have a dislike for all, but something about Officer Peter’s rubs her up the wrong way more than most.
Devon Peters is juggling life, as a single parent of 3 teenage girls, holding down his job as a police office is taking its toll.
When an opportunity to help Janie out presents itself in the most unexpected way, he can’t help but take it.
Janie knows she’s in deep trouble with Devon and tries her hardest not to fall.
Demons from her past will not always allow her to let those walls fall completely for self preservation!
Devon is a kind hearted soul who just wants to be loved.
A great story of finding one’s self worth and belief.
This book was cute and a super fast read. It focuses a lot on healing and moving on with life. Devon is seriously so sweet and caring. I love that he wants to take care of and help Janie even when she doesn't want it. Janie is a little firecracker and isn't afraid to speak her mind. I loved the main characters' chemistry and how they went from barely tolerating each other to lovers. Also, their banter was always hilarious.
You will love this book if you like: Cowboy romance Small town Single dad Slowburn Third-person POV
Cowboy and the Convict can be read as a standalone or as part of the series. I recommend checking out this series if you haven’t already!
Thank you so much, Janice and team, for the gifted copy!
This is the story of Janie who has been let down by her mom, exes and life. Always quitting on things that didn’t make her happy which she thought was the right decision to choose happiness but it led her into bad debt. Devon is a town policeman. His wife never told him she was unhappy and he never picked up on the clues until it was too late, they were divorcing when she became ill and passed.
He tried helping her which made her believe he was critical of her life. An enemies to friends to lovers. But habits are hard to break, insecurities come back for the both of them.
I loved this book I finished it in one sitting. Highly recommend. It truly made me antsy for their HEA.
What a feelgood book! Devon is such a kindhearted person who just wants to be there for his loved ones, and he just wants to make Janie feel loved like she deserves. That's not to say that he knows how to get on Janie's bad side, however, he always manages to pull his bossiness off. Now Janie, is a completely different character than Devon. She speaks her mind, doesn't hold anything back. And I like it! How she approaches her circumstances is #goals. Janie's interactions with Devon's girls are just beautiful and their interactions with her as well. A match made in heaven for all concerned.
Devon is a widower and police officer in Moss Creek. Janie works at the Inn in town as well as The Baking Rack Bakery. Riley, Olivia and Gwen are Devon’s daughters.
Janie and Devon meet and they have an attraction and chemistry, but both have past issues to overcome. Devon is kind, helpful, thoughtful ( great catch). Janie has a snarky sense of humor, but you know where you stand straight Out. Can they resolve their issues? Can they have a Happily Ever After? The characters are well developed and likeable which drew me into the story.
This book has intrigue, snarky humor, Bangor, humor, dirty talking and a second chance at love.
DNF @ 24%. These MCs need to do so much inner work to be able to get to a point where a relationship between them wouldn’t be plagued by easily avoidable problems. That inner work could be done while they’re in a relationship, but I don’t think it should be because MMC has three daughters. I think they’re all teens. Frankly, I think it’s selfish to subject them to that chaos at such an impressionable age.
Unless this book has a third act breakup where they both do at least a year of independent soul-searching, I wouldn’t recommend. I DNF’d at the point where we glimpsed that FMC’s unhealed issues had previously caused issues with a friend.
Janice has once again shown that she is truly a master when it comes to fanning the flames of a delicious slow burn while weaving her stories. She also manages to tactfully approach topics pertaining to health. I don't have endometriosis. But as someone who suffers from pmdd I found J's monthly trials extremely relatable and appreciated how the topic of insufferable cycles was approached. Honestly, her H had my heart from the moment he saw her heating pad. I can't wait to see what happens next with these Cowboys of Moss Creek.
Cowboy and the Convict is a fun, slow burn, single dad romance. Janie is a prickly, sarcastic woman who doesn't put up with anything. She isn't a fan of Devon a local cop who comes up with a solution when she's in trouble. Devon is a widowed single father of 3 teenage daughters. He is trying his best to do everything but doesn't realize he needs some help. Janie fights her feelings for Devon as she's had nothing but bad relationships in the past. This was such a heartwarming read. I really enjoyed it.
As we are headed back to Moss Creek, we hear Janie and Devon’s stories.
Devon is a local police officer with three daughters. He is a widow, and his hands are full. Janie is single and working two jobs, doing all she can to keep her head above water. I love her, independent, very sarcastic, and doing all she can to make ends meet. Both she and Devon are seasoned (in their 40’s) but both have plenty of baggage.
A fun read, with great chemistry between our characters, and truly funny moments.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
I was really excited to read this book, but ended ul being sorely disappointed! This book was really difficult to follow. The book flowed from 1st person to 3rd person and had some really odd sentences. It's almost as of two different people wrote the book, combined their parents, and nobody edited it.
Janie had a whole "I'm a bitch who doesn't care about anyone's feelings but my own " vibe. It was really off putting. I've read all of Janice's books and have loved them, but this didn't flow with the series.
Devon is a widowed single dad with 3 children and works as a police officer. Janie is single, working 2 jobs as she has debts to pay, she’s prickly, strong, previous relationships had gone bad leaving her struggling. How they deal with each other and the possibility of being a couple, makes this a fun read. Janie is not really a convict in the true sense of the word, but they overcome the obstacles and with some help from the kids finally get their act together for a second chance in love. An excellent story, with some spicy scenes that can be read as a standalone.
Janie and Devon are the perfect fit; they smooth out each other's sharp edges and work well together. Both characters are over 40, so they know themselves but are also set in their ways. They learn how to communicate and blend their lives. Devon is not afraid of girly issues (especially with 3 teenage daughters), and Janine is not afraid to speak her mind. Excellent story, perfect spice, and gives you all the feels. Enjoy!
Absolutely love Devon and Janie's story. Both living with heartaches of their past finally finding their HEA! ❤️❤️❤️ Best quote: "Giving love and accepting it are two different things." When Devon and Janie finally cross that line...I almost cried. Can I just say how much I love you JW for writing a male character that isn't afraid of a woman's reproductive cycle and steps up to handle business.
This entire series is great. Cowboy and the Convict is just as good as the others. It has a cozy small town feel with the perfect mix of heart and heat. I loved the opposites attract aspect of the story. Devon is the grumpy, strait laced officer. Janie is the unpredictable, wild card. Devon quickly discovers Janie may just be the shake up his perfectly boring life needs. Enjoyed this book. Highly recommend!
Widowed single dad, Devon Peters annoys Janie Kendrick whenever he comes around, he can’t stop giving unsolicited advice and sounding so judgmental doing it. Devon wants to get back out there and has decided on Janie but it’s not easy with three kids and she seems to despise him. But things take a turn when Devon helps Janie out of a sticky situation; instead of a huge fine or jail, Devon makes use of her housekeeping skills. They get closer, shocking the town. Rating: 3.5stars
If ever there was a case of an opposites attracts, I think this is it! Prickly Janie and Dad Devon don't seem to have a lot in common, but he wants her no matter what, and she can't really figure out why! A charming story with a lot of give and take will end up taking you to a wonderful HEA! I think you will enjoy this story from the rocky start to the not quite as rocky finish!
