Did I enjoy this? Mostly, I guess. Did I suffer through it? Sometimes.
I have a complicated relationship with this series — kind of like that ex you keep texting back even though you know you shouldn’t. I rated book 1 two stars, and honestly, I was fully prepared to break up with it. But I already owned book 2 as I bought the special editions from the author’s website (because I’m a goblin for special editions), and I decided I might as well see it through to at least the second book. So here we are.
Let's start with the chaos: this story is wild. Twisting, turning, confusing… honestly, I think I missed a corner somewhere — but I kept following anyway, kind of like when you’re following your GPS and suddenly you’re in a back alley you’re not supposed to be in. The dragon riders, the magic, the unique plot — I appreciate all that creativity, I really do — I just wish we’d gotten more depth to it. More explanations. More flesh on the bone instead of a skeleton made entirely of vibes.
The spice? Cringe with a side of “at least we tried” — although I must admit it was much less awful in this installment. So hey, that’s progress!
I honestly cared more about Poet and Keely’s growing relationship than I did for the main couple, and I bloody adore Atlas — he’s a dramatic, flirty mess and honestly carried the story on his druk wings, delivering much needed comic relief and much needed reality checks to the heroine, Ainsley. Oh, Ainsley … I’m proud you finally managed to grow the few brain cells we were promised you had in book 1. It really made a world of difference, even if we’re still not completely there yet.
One dragon did not make it, and I’m still mad about it because they were my favourite — you know who you are — but we do get more worldbuilding, more character depth, and a much smoother flow to the writing in the second half of this book. All in all, I think there’s some massive potential here. If this series was revamped with more character authenticity, tighter magic mechanics, and a fully fleshed out plot, it could easily soar to 5 stars with its original, twisty plot.
I was honestly undecided after book 1 whether I’d continue, but I’m kind of hooked now — or maybe I’m just a glutton for punishment — because I’ll be there for the final installment when it drops. This messy dragon ride isn’t over yet.
Finally, a series I can sink my teeth into, I have been searching for a while now. This series has a smart mouthed heroine who learns as she goes, collects friends and dragons alike, and is too trusting for her own good. There is witty banter, sexy interludes, adventure, and battles. Ainsley is not done fighting. Her dragons will be there to protect her. I am starting to like Dominic, he is growing on me, Poet is awesome and a great friend. I am enjoying this series immensely.
Yeah that ending pmo… The next book needs to get out here right now because this one needs to be redeemed. But I loved 98% of it. Loved the characters, hated some, loved some plot points, …hated the ending…. But other than that I had a good time. Yeah. I need the next book to decide if the series is good because VINCENT, what are you doing…?? **side eye emoji that doesn’t exist**
I enjoyed the banter between characters - felt the tension building as events were progressing. I was not a big fan of the ending though - not a cliffhanger I enjoyed. But will definitely be reading the next one
Cliffhanger and final book is not out yet! This has been an entertaining series as you never know what's coming next! Good writing and unique mages keep things hoping!
Just No, I was so tired of Ains and Dom one min we happy then we are not! Then to top it off...A Cliff Hanger and no info If there will be a book book 3!!
Okay, the first book started badly and I almost DNFed but pushed through and ended liking it. It had some faults and some twists, but I liked it. 2nd book starts 4 months after 1st book ended (or is it even 4 months? Maybe it's just 4 months from the prologue, in which case there's unknown time lapse between end of book 1 and beginning of book 2), on a cliffhanger, and I'm sorry, WHAT? I guess I assumed the 2nd book would pick up right after 1st ended, because that's what a cliffhanger means, right? Wrong, apparently. We get hints and teases what happened/ might have happened, and it's so confusingly written it feels I'm reading book 3, while having skipped book 2. Not enjoyable.
Here's hoping author will show what happened because of not, I already know the rating.
Chapter 5: "Zaeah and Parthelan are twins.” Chapter 19: I’d almost say they were twins,"
Chapter 11: “One month. Give me one month to get what we need.” blah, blah, blah “She asks for two weeks. We can give her that.”
When did it go from one month to two weeks? I even double checked and saw no mention of agreeing to change the time limit.
Ainsley is spending almost every waking minute with Dominic plus having sex with him on the regular. How does this equal them not being together, not that I’ve grasped her reasoning as to why they shouldn’t be.*
Chapter 17: I opened my palm. A beautiful, impossible celestial dragon scale glittered back at me... It is always stated that Ainsley needed a celestial dragon claw. The scale is referred to as a claw from this point forward. Pretty major error if you ask me.
i’m enjoying this tale but have to admit it’s one of the most convoluted I’ve recently read. People keep dying and then coming back to life. Hundreds of thousands of dragons are captured and are going to be put to death. First, how were these dragons caught? How long have they been imprisoned? Where are they being kept? How are they being fed? I also want to know how puny humans manage to kill dragons. Is magic involved? No explanation is given here. Was it covered in book one?
The majority of this book deals with Ainsley & her crew's search for the magical objects that will let her free the incarcerated gods. How was General Roark able to control and ride a dragon? Where did he get the scythe?
I assume Atlas is no longer a dragon slayer after Ainsley’s incantation. Did he become human? Who cursed him and Velez with the Gemini curse? I don’t remember Rickard’s age magic being used on Maili and Ormr. Actually I don’t remember Rickard.
*Her faulty reasoning is finally revealed. Even she realizes how stupid it is.
