Intersections is a Great American Story. It is based on a real-life story of a prodigal son and errant brother, both growing up in a household in a poor area of Huntington, West Virginia. The prodigal son can't figure out how he fits in and constantly drives himself to succeed despite class barriers stacked against him. The novel includes a sweeping timeline of family events including the impact of historical vignettes on the families such as the Ohio River flood, the Viet Nam War, the Marshall University football team plane crash and others. The writing style makes it easy to follow the stories and keeps the reader interested in seeing what happens next - the book is a page-turner. The reader gets drawn in to the story deeper and deeper as the novel progresses until a stunning twist of fate at the end of the book. Ultimately, this is a story about a family's love that helped them overcome their challenging hardships. Highly recommended.

I couldn’t put this well-written book down! I loved this story of family, flawed humans like us all, who with love work through the tough times to a place of forgiveness and acceptance. I met Gene, the author, during a pivotal point in the story. I had no idea at the time he was experiencing trials at home, proof none of us ever know what another is going through on any given day. He could have reacted so differently to the revelations of the last few years, but I’m so thankful he instead shared his experiences so beautifully via Intersections. Thank you for a beautiful family story, Gene, and the nostalgic trip down memory lane through Huntington, WV in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
