I actually liked this book A LOT more than the first one. Tons and tons more backstory.. characters have been fleshed out more, motives are more clearly outlined, and histories are explained. It definitely felt more complete and less rushed, with a fair amount of action.
I found the flashbacks in this book to be quite helpful, and relationships and interactions with other characters were explored more.
The emotions and feelings Corvus experiences as he slowly recovers his memories were realistic, and I was NOT expecting some of the twists in the novel, so that was refreshing.
This book was full of action and battle scenes, twists, and betrayal, and it was a lot more exciting than the first book. There's a sense that characters will betray one another, but you never really know when or how or who it's going to be, and it kept me invested.
