The Reunion

Rate this book
A skull looks up at Jennie from the trench, but it's not the chalk-white bone and grimacing teeth that send her reeling. It's the heart-shaped gold pendant, its delicate chain snapped in two. The necklace Hannah never took off. It can't be Hannah. But it is.

When Jennie Whitmore arrives at her school reunion, she immediately regrets her decision. Why would she choose to surround herself with people who were never nice to her? Who still aren't, even now she's a police officer? The only person who truly looked out for her all those years ago was charming, beautiful Hannah. Until the day she disappeared.

Jennie is ready to finally put White Cross Academy behind her, the old school building demolished the morning after the party. But with the demolition comes a a teenage girl's remains have been found on the grounds.

The instant drop in Jennie's gut tells her that the remains might be Hannah's, but when she's called in to examine them, the truth becomes undeniable. Hannah didn't run away and abandon Jenny thirty years ago; in fact, she never left White Cross at all.

Suddenly, Jennie has a murder to solve. The murder of her best friend. But can she do so before her colleagues discover just how closely connected she is to the victim? Before a mystery stalker makes good on his threats to silence her for good?

M.J. Arlidge delivers another great thriller, collaborating with Stephanie Broadribb this time around. Together, they spin quite a story that mixes police procedural with something that pulls on the threads of history. When Jennie Whitmore was finishing Sixth Form, one of her closest friends went missing at their school. Now, three decades on, DI Jennie Whitmore is an established copper and news comes that a body has been located on the site of the school. When DI Whitmore discovers that it is her friend, not only is she determined to solve the case but she vows not to show her hand and make it known that she knows the victim. A great story that does not leave any stone unturned, Arlidge and Broadribb keep the reader hooked until all comes to the surface.

After years of seeing students through to graduation, White Cross Academy is set to close its doors. A demolition crew is prepared to destroy one of the key buildings and a group has gathered to watch history in the making. However, just before the detonation, a human skull is discovered and the police are called to the scene.

DI Jennie Whitmore learns of the case and rushes to the school. A former student at White Cross, she has a bad feeling about this. While she was finishing her Sixth Form, Jennie’s friend disappeared without a trace. Now, after the medical examiner finished their work, it would seem that Hannah Jennings has finally been located. What happened and who cold have wanted her dead?

The discovery of the body soon leaks across town, forcing DI Whitmore to handle things swiftly and with some discretion. While trying to piece together the notes from the initial investigation, she must also discover all the clues about Hannah that were a mystery to her. At the heart of it all is the connection Hannah had to her five closest friends and the photography they shared in a darkroom out of the way of many other school buildings.

Working to stay on top of everything that happened back in 1994, as well as the new evidence that emerges, DI Whitmore will have to make some headway or risk losing it all and permitting Hannah’s killer to slink back into the shadows. A gripping story that delivers the needed punch to keep the reader engaged. Arlidge and Broadribb provide the perfect story to impress the dedicated reader.

While I have a long history with the work of M.J. Arlidge, I have yet to discover any books by Stephanie Broadribb. Together, this duo creates a strong story that is sure to captivate the reader. A clear narrative takes the reader on a journey into the past and lays the groundwork for a decent story that has many twists. Great character development permits the reader to wonder about many who appear and their connection to the crime at hand. The plot is meandering, but it also delivers when needed to keep the reader wondering what awaits them and provides the needed tension ahead of the final reveal. This was a strong collaborative effort and I am eager to see if the duo tries more novels together down the road.

Kudos, Mr. Aldridge and Madam Broadribb, for this solid thriller.

I can hardly believe this was written by my favourite writer. It was dire. Unreal from the first chapter……..a DI who travels everywhere on a push bike, really……. (And I would know!). Slow, turgid and completely unbelievable. The characters were forced. Not gripping or shocking. I forced myself to read to the end but it was a struggle.

I see the name M.J. Aldridge and immediately have to buy, as I love this author. So disappointed in this book. My opinion is this was very poorly written. So many phrases used over and over again. So many reiterations of what happened (yup, got it the first time!). And a grown policewoman still feels hurt after finding out she wasn't invited to her friend's parties 30 years ago? Oh well, can't win them all.

Straight from the outset I knew this was going to be a gripping read.

The books prologue starts in 1994 where the reader is introduced to teenage Jennie Whitmore who intends to runaway from her troubled life.
However her best friend Hannah fails to show at the bus stop as the young Jennie feels abandoned and alone.

Thirty years on, she reluctantly agrees to attend a school reunion as White Cross Academy is due for demolition.
There's a real sense of her awkwardness of seeing the girls that bullied her again.

Jennie had decided to join the police force rather than following her real dreams of photography, which plays a big part in the narrative.

When the remains of a teenage girl is discovered on sight, the reader instantly knows who it is.
The sequence in which Jennie is called onto the scene is powerful and her realisation of what happened to her friend is expressed with grief and anger.
The manner in which she thrusts herself into the investigation adds to the tension.

The narrative cleverly follows various lines of questioning alongside memories of Jennies past that shows just how much Hannah meant to her.

Quickly fast paced with plenty of twists and strong supporting characters.

I am a big MJ Arlidge fan, but this was my first Steph Broadribb read and I was impressed. I love a good murder mystery and sped through this one.

Jennie Whitmore has always been haunted by her best friend’s disappearance 30 years ago. Now a police officer, she is the first call when a body is found under her old school as it is being demolished. Could she finally find out what happened to Hannah.

I really felt for a Jennie as she navigated through this case, having to learn some truths about her teenage years and people she believed to be her friends. I loved her determination to find the truth, whilst frying to hide her true relationship with the deceased in order to stay in the case. It was a quick and satisfying read.

Thanks to Orion Publishing for my advanced copy of this book to read. Publishes on September 5th.

Probably I am reading too many stories about rogue detectives but the main character on this book needed to develop a personality. The constant doubts about everything had me pulling my hair out.

I thought the reason the main character was obsessed with Hannah was because she was in love with her or had an affair in the past, but she was an outcast with a really horrible family and any attention made her an absolute devotional follower. Jennie’s character was one dimensional and at times silly.

This could very well be an investigation ran by the Scooby Doo gang. Jennie has an idealized version of Hannah bordering on irrational, she doubts everything and her professional life is full of infantile decisions. Jennie as a detective is not fit to run an investigation. I was truly surprised at the authors who wrote this book.

First half: Meh.
Second half: Quite gripping and intriguing.
Sadly the ending disappointed me, it was rather predictable and lacklustre. I think my biggest let down with this book was due to the fact it was somewhat advertised as a thriller – In my opinion it really isn’t, just a standard crime story. Wouldn’t discourage anyone from reading this book, but wouldn’t necessarily recommend it either.

Jennie Whitmore is a cop who attended White Cross Academy 30 years ago when her best friend Hannah went missing. They start to demolish the building and they find the body of Hannah. Jennie is heartbroken and suspects that someone from their group done it. She uncovers secrets and lies among her friends.
This was a gripping story that had my attention from start to finish. Thanks NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group for this eARC that will be released September 5, 2024!

Jennie Whitmore wanted to escape White Cross as an 18 year old but when her best friend Hannah didn't arrive for the bus to take them both to London Jennie ended up staying and settling into life there, eventually becoming a police officer. Following a school reunion for White Cross Academy pupils in anticipation of the building being demolished the next day, Jennie gets an early wake up call - a body's been found buried in the foundations of the old building and she can only wonder if the mystery of Hannah's disappearance will now finally be resolved?

With such an intriguing premise and the fast paced introduction to the overall mystery I really wanted to love this book. It's exactly the kind of crime thriller I usually enjoy and whilst it grabbed my attention initially I very quickly tired of the repetition of Jennie having to hide her connection to the body found in the school and having to hide her emotions. It felt unethical and a thin plot device to make sure she could stay investigating the case and it wore thin on me as a reader.

I was fully invested for the first 75-100 pages of the story but then my enjoyment dipped due to my annoyance at Jennie's actions and thought processes and the fact that the middle section felt a lot slower paced with what I felt to be unnecessary elements. But I did enjoy the final quarter and I liked that there were plenty of red herrings and multiple viable suspects revealed and the conclusion overall felt pretty satisfying. I think most readers of small town murder mysteries will likely enjoy this book but unfortunately for me there were several story elements just didn't work for me.

2.75*

Onpopulaire mening.

“Arlidge & Broadribb - De laatste steen”
🏫🏫🏫🏫🏫

Topverhaal! Ongelooflijk veel sympathie voor het hoofdpersonage ook! ☺️

DNF.
So many reasons. Couldn’t stand the MC; didn’t believe in her at all as a person or a DI; hated her italicised thoughts thrown in all over the place; was incredulous at the collossal conflict of interest and the attempts to override it. Plenty more annoyances but don’t want to waste anymore time on it.

In 1994, Jennie Whitmore was meant to runaway to London with Hannah, her best friend. Jennie’s life hasn’t been a very happy one. After her father’s death, Jennie’s mother turned to drink.

That fateful night, Jennie waited for Hannah, but she never turned up. No one has seen her since.

2024. Jennie, now a DI for Major Crime Unit in White Cross, attends a school reunion. She doesn’t really want to go, but she’s hoping that maybe someone has heard from Hannah. She drinks far too much but ends up talking to some of her old friends, where they discuss the upcoming demolition of their old school, the White Cross Academy.

The next morning, Jennie receives a phone call that remains have been discovered on the demolition site. Is it Hannah?

I really enjoyed this tense thriller.

It took Jennie to a quite uncomfortable place, as she had to interview people she considered her friends. However, she soon discovered that all of them were lying.

Jennie was adamant that she had to get justice for Hannah, and I really admired that quality in her. She was determined to get to the truth.

I definitely recommend this book.

Firstly, thank-you to @netgalley for allowing me this ARC! As most of you know, I am a massive MJ Arlidge fan, and have devoured pretty much most of his books! 😍 this is a first for me by Steph but overall it did not disappoint! 😍 this follows DI Jennie Whitmore as she initally visits a 30 year reunion with her high school friends. Soon after, her childhood best friend, who vanished in 1994) turns up dead in the school they once attended!
Honestly, this was such an easy read and at 292 pages, what's not to love! 😍 I didn't guess the ending and it was nice to see a different ending to other crimes I have read in the past! I definitely could relate to Jennie and how she felt around high school and her friendships and that came across so well in the book! 🥰

This book releases 5th September and I cannot wait for you all to read it! 😍

The novel is a straightforward and engaging "whodunit," where the tension builds as Jennie navigates both personal and professional challenges to uncover the truth.
Although this is quite a short book it does not skimp on pace or content.
I finished reading The Reunion in just a few days. It’s a fast-moving, engaging thriller that’s hard to put down. If you're in the mood for an entertaining and suspenseful read, this one is definitely worth picking up.

I have a been a long-time fan of M J Aldridge and I noticed this collaboration with Steph Broadribb which I have not read but heard positive things about. So, I couldn’t wait to read this, and I wasn’t disappointed.
Jennie Whitmore is a Police Officer and decides to her school reunion. Even though nobody was ever nice to her except for one person who was her best friend Hannah until she disappeared.
Jennie is SIO for a new case. Her old school is being demolished but proceedings have stopped as they have found remains of a body in the basement where when she was attending White Cross academy this is where she and a group of mates hang out. When she sees the remains, she knows instantly by the necklace still on the neck of the skeleton is of her friend Hannah that went missing all of them years ago.
This is a fabulous read full of twists and turns that kept you guessing and guessing. I loved the character of Jennie. The is an excellent Police officer but she was torn between doing the right thing to get justice for Hannah even going against her friends and doing her job properly under the eye of her superiors. I enjoyed this so much I read it in 24 hours.
I was hoping there was more to this story (another Book). But sad it came to end with the story line concluded at the end. 5 stars from me.

The Reunion is a quick paced read with twists and turns, secrets, lies, deception and atmosphere that had me looking over my shoulder.

A body is discovered at White Cross Academy and as fate would have it, the old building is to be demolished the morning after a reunion.

A reunion of school mates like no other.

Jennie a DI attended that school and she fears the body might belong to her good friend that went missing many years ago.

By all means Jennie should exclude herself from the murder team but she is determined to find out the answers.

She is surrounded by a great team but it's hard to keep a secret that big.

The class mates are all hiding something, they all are unreliable witnesses.

The tension mounts with every page, you suspect everyone and you trust no one.

The Reunion was cleverly plotted, well paced and an excellent read .

I love M. J. Arlidge's books and together teamed up with Steph Broadribb they are force to be reckoned with. Hope they collaborate together again soon.

Thanks to NetGalley and Orion Publishing Group /Orion for the opportunity to read and review The Reunion.

I found this book such an enjoyable read! The writing style is very pleasant, with a good pace throughout the story, and the characters are well-developed. I could easily picture it as a detective serie/movie. The real suspense kicked in at the end, and until then, I had no clue who the killer was.

I give it 4.5 stars because I would have liked a bit more tension, but I finished the book quickly (in about 4.5 hours) and enjoyed every minute. Great book!
