Good intro to music theory in terms that anyone can learn
I like this book’s advice to learn the rules so you know how to break them well. It starts with rhythm, then moves on to pitch, notes, melody, intervals, scales, chords, and musical notation. The charts are easy to read, and the instructions are easy to follow. It includes great examples of the techniques it’s describing, like various pop songs when talking about speed and time signatures. It’s meant to be read alongside the accompanying workbook for you to practice, and this is definitely a skill you’ll want to practice as you learn. By the end of the book, you’ll have a good understanding of how music is put together, and may even be ready to write some of your own.
Music explained in plain English and the assumption that the reader is new to the art is a big help for me. Covering the basics in a relatable way, the book then advances to more intriguing concepts, all the while encouraging the musician to try different arrangements. Song references were a big help in demonstrating the point of each lesson. When writing music, examples are given in the right way and wrong way, as well as how to overcome logical obstacles. Whether playing a single instrument or composing for a symphony, this is an excellent resource to start with.
I don't have any music background and didn't really comprehend what music theory is. So I was curious about this book and chose it to better understand music. I love how Dan Spencer explains everything in simple, friendly language that made perfect sense to me. I still haven't checked QR code videos and will do that later on but based on the quality of the inside of that book I believe it will be fantastic. This book makes music theory feel approachable and fun instead of intimidating. Highly recommend for anyone starting from scratch!
I love the approach taken in this book. It is very succinct but provides everything a beginner needs (and a little more). I took music theory through numerous books as I learned piano as a child. I added a couple more instruments (guitar and baritone) along the way just for fun. However, I never improved on my music theory. This was a great review and I learned a lot that I had forgotten. Highly recommended.
If you know nothing about music, this book can help making things click for you. The lessons are short and the language is simple. The QR codes take you straight to videos so you can hear what you’re reading. I was able to tap some rhythms and write simple melodies in a few days. Also the upbeat tone kept me motivated. Great starter guide if you’ve always wanted to read music but felt scared.
This book offers a complete dive into music theory. Although it is for beginners, the book progressively tackles more complicated themes in an approachable way, making it good for musicians at all levels of learning. A lot of thought has gone in to the information and it is very well designed. There are many extra features that this book offers in qr codes as well. Highly recommended.
I took music in school, one semester (lol), so this was a real eye opener: I never knew about pulse, beat though I knew about rhythm. This is a book I will have to seat down to study again in the future, but I was glad to have my hands on it
It begins by teaching the basics of learning to read and write sheet music. Although it seems to me that it jumps between the basics and the not so basics, it follows the theory and practice quite well.
