Rax
Fifteen years to life is a long time to be sentenced to prison, even if I do deserve it. As the Enforcer of my MC, I had to do some things that would give most people nightmares. I’m prepared to do my time, waiting for my lawyer to appeal my sentence. But when an opportunity presents itself to escape, I take it. I’m on my way back to my clubhouse in Tennessee when I get stuck in a small Missouri town. I have to kidnap the small town mechanic to aid in my escape, ignoring the unfamiliar cravings I feel towards him.

Finn
After finishing my weekly food run, I’m approached by a hot-as-sin guy in the parking lot with a broken down truck. I help him out and think he's on his way until he shoves a gun into my back. Turns out that hot guy is an escaped convict and all he wants is my cooperation as a hostage. To live, I’ll have to trust him and do everything I can to save my life… including using my body.

The Convict is an age gap, bi-awakening, motorcycle club, kinky book. It contains dark themes, murder, violence, heat and, most of all, a hard-fought HEA. It is book one in the Devil’s Mayhem MC series.

“When you’re done eye fucking the man you stole, we need to talk.”

This was not a four-star read. It was kinda bad, actually. *lol But somehow I ate up every second of it still.

And I also can’t wait for more books in the series.

I was going to not rate this book, but I'll bump the rating up to 2⭐ because of the (yes, exactly that) threesome in the story and the big potential for a MMM dynamic.

The MMCs were completely unconvincing and there was zero chemistry between them - zip, zero, nada. It was convenient sex coupled with a stale bi-awakening that ended up reading as a m/f book, at least to me.

🔵 MC enforcer, convict/a twink mechanic
🟡 Jailbreak, kidnapping
🟣 Well, he's here, I might as well fuck him, right? aka the bi-awakening
🟠 No chemistry, no connection, a lot of telling and no showing
🟢 Convict is supposed to be a bad guy, but I couldn't feel it, he was all talk no play - and had long hair and tattoos, tadaaa
🔵 Weird plot development, could it be even less exciting? Guess not
🌶️ Some sex, but boring, the only interesting and hot part was the MMM threesome; t/b

The story was about Rax, the enforcer of the MC Devil's Mayhem escaping out of prison after 7 years of serving a sentence for attempted murder. On the run he comes across Finn, the smalltown mechanic who's living an unhappy life and wants to move someplace else.

Finn has a thing for bad guys so there's a weird attempt to show the reader how he's afraid because he's kidnapped but again, attracted to Rax. Anything going on between them was not believable, the chemistry not palpable at all and Finn seemed just like a side character almost, he wasn't fleshed out, neither was Rax. There was no spark, no connection and how these two went from some convenient fucking to falling in love and talking about forever was almost laughable.

It's like one of those bad m/f stories where the guy is just saying he's the bad guy and she's all up in flames because he has tattoos.

"He shrugs almost shyly. “You seemed sad. I don’t like you being sad.”
“My big bad biker murderer doesn’t like his sweet pea to be sad.” Before he can give me a smart- ass answer, I bend down to kiss him."
🙄

Anyway, the writing and the storytelling wasn't good. Quite a few grammatical mistakes and the storytelling, well, for such a lengthy book you'd expect more.
Rax's bi-awakening wasn't well done and yeah, that's a lot of comparing to women and not a lot of showing.

"When I fucked women, even when they came, I never saw this unabashed arousal. I never saw their lust reflected back at me. I never saw them lose control and show me that loss of control."

Well, one could think he just wasn't good in bed, right?

"Finn bounces his ass back on my cock and I see stars. Usually, I’m the one doing all the work."

I mean, what? It's not like Finn is doing anything much so why not just say - hey, I really seem to prefer fucking guys and that's it. Why compare it to women to make it more believable?

Overall this guy seemed like he was going to stray back to straight waters just for the fuck of it. And again, that part with him DP women with his best friend - yet never really thinking about men that way? Yeah, right.

Like with his bestie Zeke.

"We’ve shared some women before and I felt his dick against mine when we fucked the same pussy at the same time, but it wasn’t sexual between us."

It wasn't sexual, we just rubbed our dicks together, it's platonic! It was platonic. Platonic sex. 🥴

Here is that potential for a MMM story developing and yet, it didn't. That was the only interesting part in this book. Rax and Finn weren't interesting enough when it was just the two of them, so add the bestie and you've got yourself an interesting situation.
The bestie, Zeke, also came to visit them when they were stationed in Cuba later on and they got together some more, so yeah, it's just sex, but they could've easily ended up together.

🟡 About the love part, well, the author had a weird way of describing it. Maybe that's why it wasn't believable. Maybe it reminded me too much of m/f books, I don't know. I just know I didn't like it.

"God, I can’t be falling in love with him, can I? That would be the definition of a danger whore."

“Someone clean this shit up. I need to get my property home.”

A lot of sentences like these were thrown in there to make it look like it's a bad MC boy book, but it really wasn't.

"I never would have thought I’d be settling down, finding that someone like all those romance books and fairytales and shit tell you about."

Yep, called it. Like an m/f book.

"Fuck, that was the most intense experience I’ve ever had and Rax is the one that gave it to me. Fuck, I’m in love with him. Dammit, when did that happen?"

I don't know, when did it?? Because I couldn't see it.

Completely boring and unconvincing. Maybe I'll give another book a shot, maybe. Nothing really did it for me in this one.

❝ And if I'm being honest, to fuck someone as dangerous as Rax has been a fantasy of mine. Who would know besides the two of us? Sick. I'm fucking sick for thinking it. He fucking killed people. ❞

5 stars mama. 5 fucking stars. One of my easiest wins. I love the slow burn. I love the danger like Fin. I love the drama and conflict. I thought I was over with all the motorcycle gang romances but here I am! This trope has been my form of entry in the mm romance world... and I need to revisit it again in my next reads. Roman Reign/Jason Momoa as Rax! My lustful brain is fried.

New to me author and I’m locked in. This kind of surprised me I can’t lie. I went in basically blind just looking for a good MM romance and I got so much more. I loved both of these characters and their story so much.

I enjoyed this writing style too! Their inner monologues and the banter was so funny. I was actively laughing out loud. Finn is just like me FR Stockholm Syndrome who?

Jerking him slowly a few times, I meet his eyes. “Fuck my mouth like you hate me.”

I was in the mood for a simple story with lots of steamy stuff and kink. This somehow was all of that and so much more.

The story kicks off with Rax, the former enforcer of Devil's Mayhem MC, escaping prison after offing a guard. He kidnaps a twink named Finn, after his car breaks down and keeps him hostage. At first to Rax, Finn is just a means to an end, a bargaining chip, if he gets caught again. But slowly, their dynamic shifts from captor and captive to something more.

When I started reading this, I knew what l was signing up for, but what I didn't expect was how cute and sweet the relationship between Rax and Finn was. They got off on the wrong foot but as they got to know each other, they realized they're not all that different, and maybe they're exactly what the other needs in their life. I absolutely loved their relationship and was thoroughly invested in the story.

Highly recommend this if you are down for a dark, gritty romance with badass bikers and shit ton of smut.

What an excellent start to a new series. RS McKenzie is fast becoming a one click author for me. This one had all the delicious dark elements I love, along with a rough and tumble MC who is soft for his little cinnamon roll. What’s not to love?

Finn truly never knows what hits him. One minute he’s helping out the hot guy in the parking lot and the next, he’s the guy driving an escaped convict back to his MC family. He scared out of his mind and wildly attracted to Rax. Talk about some mixed up feelings. Rax isn’t very nice in the beginning, and I kinda liked that. He was a very believable club guy. You’d expect him to be awful for awhile. If he had been soft from the get-go, it wouldn’t have been half as accurate.

This book had so many ups and downs and I never really knew how this was going to work out. It seemed impossible at times. But not only did we get a hard won HEA, we some extra hot spice along the way. While I know a lot of people are not a fan of sharing, in this context, it was smoking hot and I was there for it. Zeke was yummy.

This was a fantastic read and I am so excited for the next.

This is a romance about a man who escapes from prison who's actually a legit killer (no redemption ARC needed) and he unapologetically kills for his MC. He's the enforcer.

He meets a man while he's escaping who's innocent yet has a secret dark wild side and is only 25.

This is a captive turned lovers gay romance and while I do like it, it's not the best thing I've ever read by any means.

I didn't like that it wasn't that amazing in terms of love connection or deep feelings on my own behalf, meaning, I wasn't crying or on the edge of my seat.

I don't like that there was a threesome scene with the MC and his best friend sleeping with the other MC. It turned me off personally because sharing takes away from the romance to me.

And it was just a smidge unbelievable but doing its best to be believable as far as laws and the way he escaped. All of that was believable.

I guess I would recommend it but only if you're bored or desperate but I don't mean to sound mean by saying that. It's your average 4 star prison "ish" romance. There was no actual prison time involved.

The Convict by R.S. McKenzie is book 1 in the Devil’s Mayhem MC series.

When you pick up a book about criminals and kidnapping, you'd expect something really dark. Surprisingly, that's not what The Convict is at all. At least not for me, who's used to reading books that are pitch-black. The relationship between the two MCs was even rather sweet and on the low-angst side of things. The book does have a background of violence and murder, so bear that in mind if you decide to read The Convict.

Opposites attract is one of my favorite tropes, and Rax and Finn embodied it perfectly. Their relationship and its evolution in a captor/captive context was fascinating. When these two succumbed to their attraction it gave way to some scorching hot sex scenes. Rax dirty talk was so damn hot and you could feel the chemistry between these two. There was a sharing scene that I found so sexy. Rax was really possessive of Finn and at the same time this scene really made sense for the two of them. I could easily have taken one or two more scenes like that.

For my first time reading R.S. McKenzie it was an excellent experience. Her writing style suits me perfectly. The only thing that held me back from giving a higher rating was that I would have liked to feel more emotions following Rax and Finn on their journey. The steam, the characters and the plot twists kept me interested until the very end.

If you like your romance dark and your MCs morally grey, this book is the one for you! The Convict follows Raxel James, an enforcer in the Devil’s Mayhem motorcycle club. He is sent to prison for attempted murder, but manages to escape. Having found freedom, he kidnaps a man to drive him back to his brothers in the MC.

Finn Coombes feels like he is the only gay man in the whole of Reverdale. He is miserable and desperate to move away; he thinks his luck has turned when he spots a sexy stranger in the parking lot, but this illusion is quickly shattered when the stranger pulls a gun on him and demands he drive him across the country.

This book is really dark and there is a lot of discontent between the MCs before they get their HEA. Rax treats Finn really poorly in the start of the book (although does make up for it later on) and the third-act breakup was BRUTAL. There is a lot of angst as Rax is on the run for the whole time, but also it was good to see the tight family bonds he has with the MC and the lengths they go to to protect him and Finn. There is also sharing in this book after Rax & Finn, get together (Finn is shared with Rax’s best friend) which is a dynamic I actually haven’t read a lot of but did enjoy in this context!

The only reason this book loses a star from me is that I don’t feel like Rax apologies enough to Finn for his mistreatment at the start of the book - yes he’s a big tough biker but he treated Finn like garbage and I wanted infinitely more grovelling from him. Although I really liked Finn, I don’t think I ever warmed to Rax fully, although I think that’s probably the point - he’s not a particularly likeable guy!

Overall, I really enjoyed this! Thank you to the author and Gay Romance Reviews for a free eARC of this book - all opinions are my own 💕

2.5 stars. But like, not in a bad way! The author mentions at the beginning that you'll need to suspend your disbelief for a lot of this book, and I agree. And once you do, you'll probably have a good, tropey time. There are some things about the book that just wouldn't ever work for me, no matter how much I suspend anything. But like, it was still fun.

Raz is an MC enforcer, serving time for assault. After killing a cruel and corrupt prison guard, he manages to escape, and kidnaps a cute twinky mechanic. Finn, who is longing to escape his bigoted small town, very much does not want to be kidnapped by a violent convict, but this is a dark romance novel, so like, he obviously changes his tune on that score, lol. And they fall in love. And it was fine! It was fun! Over the top and sexy. There's bisexual awakening and kink exploration. A fair bit of murder and mayhem, drama and betrayal, daring exploits.

I just couldn't get behind the writing. There wasn't enough detail or scene-setting, and when we did get a lot of detail, I found myself a little bored. The writing style is very... idk, voicey and exaggerated, which isn't bad in and of itself, but it doesn't work for me. I don't know why, but for me, cursing in dialogue is fine, but cursing in prose is soooooo silly. This could have probably used another edit, and there were some things that didn't NEED to be that outlandish. In my opinion, at least. The ending got very dramatic, and I might have wanted to smack Raz a little.

But hey, if the book set out to be sexy and taboo and bonkers, it more than achieved that. I'll probably read Zeke's book at some point; I did really like him. (The sharing was great, ngl.) I know what to expect out of the series now, so I won't be disappointed.

4.5/5 ⭐

The Convict is the first book in RS McKenzie's Devil's Mayhem MC series. It is an MM motorcycle club romance. The book is told from a first person, dual point of view and has a guaranteed happily ever after. You can expect an age gap, bi-awakening, forced proximity, dark themes, murder, violence, and heat. Note that this book does contain consensual sharing after the main characters are in a relationship.

As always, ensure you review the content and trigger warnings to decide if this book is right for you. The Convict has warnings for Note that this list may be incomplete. Please take care of yourself while reading.
Nodding, the stranger walks over to me and I have to crane my neck. He has to be at least six five if he’s an inch. Little ol’ me at five-four is thrilled with the prospect of a taller, bigger man tossing me around and railing me into the pavement. Hell, the pavement of this parking lot if he asked.

This book has been on my TBR for a few months, and it's been calling to me. I texted a friend while reading this book saying I didn't expect to be rooting for a murderer to escape prison, but here we are. I have no regrets. This book was a lot of fun, and wasn't as dark as I anticipated it was going to be despite being centered around a rough and gritty motorcycle club. We first meet Rax when he's being sentenced. He's definitely a little rough around the edges, and the author doesn't paint him as the friendliest guy. That being said, you'll love him by the end of the book. He's endearing in his own, unique way! And Finn is just such a firecracker. The garbage he had to deal with in his hometown was infuriating, and I sincerely believe him when he says that Rax is the best thing to ever happen to him. Their meeting is unique, to say the least. But I loved watching them learn to trust one another. The chemistry between them, despite the circumstances, was just so sweet and unexpected. These two were also unbelievably spicy together. If you're a fan of spice and enjoy things like primal play, this book will be right up your alley. Like I've mentioned, there is consensual sharing once the characters are already in a relationship. If that's not your jam, there's a chapter or two you can most likely skip and still enjoy the book, otherwise you may want to skip this book entirely. I can't wait to read more of the series and get to know everyone in the MC better, especially Zeke! I also loved the epilogue in this book, is just made me so happy. The twists and turns in this book were perfect, and it kept me on my toes and enjoying it!
I feel good. Boneless. I feel like I’ve been remade. I’ve never felt like this and probably never will again.
Fuck, Rax has ruined me for other men. I’ll never be the same again.

I saw this at Bookfunnel and the biker cover had me reading the blurb. I’m not a fan of a kidnap plot line. It has to be well written with elements of humanity and romance if it’s going to be inside an MM romance. This book is.
I liked the characters very much.
Captive Finn would ask biker Rax to turn off the TV news as he didn’t want the outside world in their ‘bubble’. It was cool that he used that word. Yes, there is a Stockholm Syndrome plot, one that Finn refers to in his thoughts as a Patty Hearst situation. He always thought that he would fight like mad if taken, and here he is, in love with his captor.
All the extenuating circumstances that make this palatable and kept me reading were written in a clear and readable style. This was a good read by a new to me author.
I liked the motorcycle club characters and would read books about them.
If I’m going to keep reading MC books I will have to tolerate drug and gun selling, or just not read them. There was a surprising plot point that they did their charity runs to cover the narcotics and weapons being moved. 🤦‍♀️😧
Yet, I still liked the club leaders.
If I’m giving five stars you know that the sex is top shelf. Finn is one of the hornier twinks I’ve read in awhile. Rax is straight until he spends 24/7 with Finn. They both come from sad backgrounds and fall in love. Their deep relationship is tested by a dramatic event that tears them apart. I wasn’t sure how they would get back together.
The author did an excellent job with all of the plotting and scenes.
It was a tense and absorbing read with the lovely character romance as a basis. I loved the scenes of Finn brushing Rax’s very long hair. It was a sweet and humorous plot point between two sexy men.
I’m looking forward to reading more about this MC world.

Admittedly, this was a hard book for me to get into back in January. I got 15% in and at the time I thought: “this isn’t the vibe right now.” I hate doing that for a book, but I picked it up a day ago and really enjoyed it and finished it in one sitting. Mood-reading I tell you, can freaking suck.

3.5⭐️
4 🌶️ (spice was spicing)
This is a MM romance.
The first half of the book was good, but the second half was where my interest peaked! We got more action (and not just the hot kind), we got to actually see our characters.
In the beginning I didn’t really like Finn, he kinda annoyed me with how sensitive he was (he cried A LOT), but as we got further in the story and you saw his character progress into something a bit more badass I became satisfied.
Rax, was a cool character that was well written and getting to see his thought process (and sometimes the lack of it) really helped you get to know him and have a soft spot for him. It was nice.
The supporting characters were fun! They were more than just “those people” that the main characters talked to. You hated some STRONGLY, and others you loved STRONGLY, they really pulled this story together.
Overall, this book has a strong plot and great characters. The only reason it got 3.5 stars that I rounded up to 4 was because the first half of the book was so slow and slightly boring, but the second half blew me out of the water. Either way it was really nice to see our boys get a happy ending.

The Convict, by R. S. McKenzie, is a dark m/m romance about an MC enforcer that breaks out of prison and takes a hostage.

This is definitely a dark romance, with graphic descriptions of violence, torture, and murder. Rax is not a good person, but he ends up being perfect for Finn. This is definitely not a healthy relationship, but the steam was very steamy, and I liked Rax a lot more once he fell for Finn. My favorite parts where when there was some three people consensual steam.

But the third act break up seemed unnecessary to me.

Overall a super steamy dark m/m romance.

A Dark M/M MC Book

For those of us who like their MC books dirty, dark and steamy this is a book for you because I got that and so much more from this author’s book. Rax is the enforcer for an MC and is a convict on the run back to his club brothers. Finn just happens to be an innocent man who was looking to help out Rax but with a gun held to him Finn does what he needs to do and goes with Rax.

I love my books on the dark side with a lot of steam and I have to say that Rax and Finn burned up the pages.

Now... I rated this a 4 stars, but this book is so ridiculous and is a trainwreck, that I don't know what to say about it.

I'm usually not into group sex in M/M stories (I'm one of those girls that loves monogamy), but I wished we could get a Rax/Zeke/Finn relationship, mainly because I loved Zeke. He added something to the Rax/Finn relationship.

Am I going to read rest of the books in this series? You bet your ass I will. But so far, I will say that I prefer the Family Ties series over this.

Rax is not a nice man, not a good man but is a murdering enforcer for a MC. But he is the man his kidnapped victim Finn wants after Rax escapes prison. In this dark and delicious romance, it's hard to like Rax with little to redeem him except for his love he finds for Finn even after betrayal. It's a steamy book with this hardened criminal and the sweet, young man who will do anything for him. Loved it! I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.

Rax and Finn ❤️🔥❤️

4 Stars ⭐️

This book shouldn't have been adorable but it absolutely was!!! When you have a literal cold hearted, murderous enforcer of an MC who just escaped prison and kidnaps an innocent...you don't think adorable. However, when said enforcer's innocent is an irresistible twink mechanic with an attraction to bad boys and a nervous babbling streak......see where I'm going with this one??? This relationship build couldn't have been written better, we went from fear to attraction, then to trust that allows blazing chemistry/ kinky times and lastly love. A true, pure, sweeter than sweet love between a couple that shouldn't fit or work but they do and they were perfect for each other! I would definitely recommend it was so good.

* I received an ARC from GRR, this is my open and honest review *
