A Marshal for Imogen: Mail order brides of the West

Rate this book
Pride and Prejudice with cowboy-filled suspense.

The Marshal married her for revenge... Now, the game has changed.

Losing the love of her life to an infamous gunslinger has made Imogen desperate, so much so that that she’ll even marry Ambrose, the man who’d called her plain. But hunting for a bandit in a lawless town is more dangerous than she'd bargained for and the man she's married is cold as ice.

Ambrose might seem stiff and emotionless, but his frosty exterior hides the desire to see the man who killed his brother dead or caught, and it hardly matters which one to him. If he must marry Imogen in order to do it, he will, even though he can see that his new bride's fiery spirit may be too hot to handle.

Will pride be put aside to bring justice to the west? Is love possible along the way?

The Marshals of Silverwood is a series of mail-order brides who choose to move across the country to help newly appointed lawmen bring justice to the wilds of the west.

THE HUNT, THE CHASE, THAT WAS ALL THAT MATTERED

The series is a spin-off from a previous series, The Marshal’s Mail-Order Bride, in which all eight books revolve around Christmastime. The story this time will be Lillian’s sister, Imogene, and Benjamin’s brother, Ambrose. Shelly Winters has decided that the Marshals for the various towns, need to be married men. Ads are sent out, and women will respond, but will they be up to the duties and dangers of being married to a marshal, when the outlaws are determined to win?

“Their motto: Don’t host a wedding. Don’t host a celebration. If you were a marshal, you’d pay dearly.”

Imogen traveled with her older sister, Lillian, when she came West to marry Benjamin. Imogen and Henry were to marry, and he was gunned down in the streets of Silverwood. Now, one year later, Imogen is working with the Marshals, doing paperwork, and helping them locate mail-order brides. What a shock when the latest mail-order bride exits the train, a delicate porcelain doll meets the rough Wild West. Claire had come to marry Ambrose.

The story has the good, the bad, and the evil of people. So far, two previous mail-order brides changed their minds. Ambrose needs to marry and go to Sawmill as the new acting Marshal, but before that can happen, he needs to marry. On the day of the wedding, something is off, and Imogen is beside herself, knowing she has lost Ambrose too. Outside, Kit and she are talking, he sees her tears, but her mind is back in the church, at the strangers at the back of the church. Pandemonium takes place, shots are fired, and a face that Imogen will never forget is there, Russet is back, determined to prevent the wedding from happening.

When the dust settles, Claire can’t continue with the wedding, and once again Ambrose is in Silverwood—that is unless Imogen gives him a way to leave. A marriage in name only, no wedding, everything in secret, and with them, Kit will come as protection of Imogen. Will Ambrose be able to make a difference in Sawmill? When he brings the town back from fear and lawlessness, what will happen to him and Imogen?

Imogen: We are married. It’s so strange.
Ambrose: Yes, you have me now. Whatever good that will do for you.
Imogen: And so I do. But it’s not what I wanted or how I wanted it. It should have been Henry.
Ambrose: I am not meant to take his place, Imogen.
Imogen: I realize that. It doesn’t matter. This is for him, his murderer’s still free and enjoying his life.
Ambrose: While my brother’s life was ended short. Russet will pay, I won’t rest until he does.
Imogen: Then we must stay focused.
Ambrose: Agreed.
Imogen: We won’t have to pretend long. No dances in our honor. No real honeymoon. That should make this easy.
Ambrose: There is nothing easy about you, Imogen. Not a single thing.

I enjoyed the story and characters. The day Henry died, it not only affected Imogen but also Ambrose. He is still haunted by the war and determined to see justice in the West. Imogen has fallen for the brooding Ambrose, but she doesn’t want to accept that—yet no mail-order bride has been right either. What happens when they have a marriage in name only? Set up housekeeping in Sawmill and do what they can to restore the town. What happens when danger comes their way and it is a matter of life and death? The story is full of angst but is a clean historical western. In the end, two people decide that fate has brought them together and they are determined to make every day count from now on.

"Try not to break this one"

I enjoyed Lillian and Benjamin's book but I loved this book more! Ambrose and Imogen are such feisty and brash characters, but they are completely in denial or maybe oblivious to their feelings for each other, even when unconsciously sabotaging Ambrose's weddings. Everyone else see's it, but not them. I really enjoyed their journey to HEA, it's not traditional, it's not easy and it's not even guaranteed as they verbally joust and jab at each other - but it is highly entertaining. I also look forward to Kit's book, he has a journey of his own in this book, one of self discovery and redemption, but I also cannot wait to see him fall head over heels in love too.
A great read on Kindle Unlimited and a fantastic first book in the Marshals of Silverwood series.

Imogen and Ambrose

This is an exciting story with danger and intrigue. I enjoyed the well thought out plot. I enjoyed the well-developed characters. I enjoyed reading about the interactions with the main characters’ families. I enjoyed reading about the Marshalls and about the gang of bandits and killers. I enjoyed the danger and the resolutions to the problems. I enjoyed the romance as Ambrose and Imogen came to care for and love each other. If you love a sweet romance with a great deal of excitement, you should read this book.

I enjoyed the book! Imogen lost her fiancé to an outlaw. All she wants is revenge. Ambrose was her fiancé’s brother. He also wanted revenge. The outlaw and his gang were trying to take over all the towns and get rid of the marshals. Ambrose and Imogen decided to have a marriage of convenience in order to set a trap for the outlaw gang. There is drama in the book along with some humor. I recommend reading this book!

A Marshall for Imogene

I really liked this story about Ambrose and Imogene. They were trainers for making new Marshall’s for the different mining town’s springing up. Imogene’s fiancé was killed by a man named Russet. The couple was going to the town of Sawmill as husband and wife to try and clean up the town and kill Russet. Lots of action ,filled with love in the making, enjoy.

Fast moving western

Delightful characters and interesting story. Could use a good proofreader and editor. Some of the sentences were jumbled and hard to understand. Overall, this is a good story with memorable characters. It moves quickly and it's never boring or repetitive.

Great storyline!

I think my favorite part was the three horses! Not really but I loved that I got to know what each was like. Good storyline and can't wait to read more in this series!
